For Julie Powell-Booth, being in touch
with nature has always been a big
part of her life whether it has been in
her past occupation as a Cordon Bleu
chef and restaurateur incorporating
fresh herbs in her dishes or now in her
spacious West Melton garden growing
culinary and medicinal herbs.
Julie has recently turned her love
of gardening into a small boutique
business called The Herbal Garden,
creating herbal products for her
growing clientele. After being made
redundant from her full time job four
years ago, she decided to go back to
nature and took on a year’s study in
organics at Lincoln University followed
by a 9-month herbal apprenticeship
with herbalist Valmai Becker at Little
River.
“I had grown culinary herbs in the
past and used them in my cooking
but learning about the medicinal
side of herbs was a totally different
side for me and quite exciting too,”
says Julie. “I came away thinking
this blends really well with what I’m
doing organically so I might as well do
something with it.”
Locally owned and operated from
their base in Rolleston, Juice Electrical

very popular as it is a lot easier and
less expensive to install because there
is no need to dig trenches for wiring.
Outdoor options include up-lighting
trees and buildings, deck lighting and
floodlights as well as security lighting.
They advise on the best type and
where they should be placed. Greg
recommends installing sensors so the
lights come on automatically at dusk.
“We discuss the customer’s ideas
with them, show them photos of
other gardens with attractive outdoor
lighting and make suggestions on
how they can make the most of their
outdoor area with a range of LED
lighting options,” says Greg.
In fact LED lights are now the preferred
option for indoor and outdoor lighting
as well.
