Final step in Line 3 pipeline
project underway
Decommissioning work taking place in Alberta
and Saskatchewan
WHAT THE HAIL
815 Broad St · Regina, SK · 306 525-5050
Along a 1,097-km corridor – stretching underground across the Prairies
from Hardisty, Alta. to the U.S border at Gretna, Man. – is a new,
36-inch pipeline placed into service by Enbridge in October 2019. With
the above-ground pipeline right-of-way returned to its pre-construction
condition, work to decommission the ‘legacy’ Line 3 continues in 2022.
“This is the final step toward completing the entire Line 3 Replacement
Program in Canada,” said Construction Manager Allen Sawatzky. “We’re
done in most of Manitoba and this year we’re focused on the remaining
segments of Line 3 from Hardisty and throughout Saskatchewan to west
of Cromer (Manitoba).”
The decommissioning project in 2022 will focus on three segments,
beginning with the 255-km leg from Regina to Cromer in late spring,
followed by Hardisty to Kerrobert (176 km) and Kerrobert to Regina (355
km) in late summer into fall. The general contractor for Hardisty to Kerrobert
is Gee Bee Construction while the general contractor for Kerrobert
to Cromer is Maxx North American Services Ltd.
Work in each segment will have a peak workforce of about 60, including
crews of between seven and 10 construction and contract personnel.
“Decommissioning is a logistically challenging job,” said Sawatzky. “It’s
different than building a pipeline – you don’t just work from kilometre
zero to kilometre 100 in a straight line. You go back-and-forth, from siteto-site,
and the particular job in Manitoba in 2021 involved 31 different
locations for segmentation, valve isolation and for installing engineered
material in the pipe beneath railway and road crossings.”
There are 23 locations for segmentation, valve isolation and railway fill
between Hardisty and Kerrobert, 34 locations between Kerrobert and
Regina and 40 locations between Regina and Cromer.
SIDEBAR
Decommissioning 101
A decommissioned pipeline is defined by the Canada Energy Regulator
(CER) as one that is taken out of service safely and permanently while
other existing or new pipelines in the same right-of-way continue to provide
service to end users.
Enbridge has approval from the CER (formerly the National Energy
Board) to decommission Line 3 in place, a standard practice which minimizes
the potential effects on communities and the stability issues that
surround soil disturbance.
Aug 13, 2022 - ST. CATHARINES, ON - Team Sask wins two medals on
the final day of week one competition at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer
Games.
Men’s baseball does it again! The defending champions from the 2017 Canada
Summer Games take home another medal, this time bronze. In a nail-biting
game Team Sask defeated Team BC, 6-5.
The women’s basketball team played Team AB in the gold medal game. For
most of the game Team Sask led. Our girls battled to the end with Nevaeh Ferrara-Horne
(#6) hitting a heated 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in the game.
Final score: 71 AB - 60 SK, resulting in Team Sask earning a silver medal.
TEAM SASK MEDAL COUNT:
GOLD: X | SILVER: 6 | BRONZE: 4 | TOTAL: 10
“This is just the best feeling in the world, it’s amazing coming out here and
having fun with the boys” said Sutter Balog (#17, Weyburn), men’s baseball. “I
didn’t doubt this team one bit.”
“Team Sask baseball winning bronze in 2022 is a phenomenal accomplishment.
It shows what kind of a program Baseball Sask is run in winning medals
at the last two Canada Games (gold in 2017/bronze in 2022). Great support
with almost all the parents being at these games and great support from other
Team Sask athletes and coaches. Gotta love multi-sport games. Gotta love the
Canada Games” -Darrell Barker, Team Sask Misson Staff for men’s baseball.
“I thought we played three quarters of really good basketball and then struggled
in the fourth... we were a little tentative but I feel like our defense really
kept us in the game” said Bree Burgess, head coach for the women’s basketball
team. “This experience is amazing, I described this to my team five years ago
like a mini-olympics and how lucky they are to be born at the right time and
be given this opporutnity. It’s like a once in a life time opportunity and it’s just
amazing to be a part of it.”
Prairie Cherries
Prairie Cherries (Dwarf Sour Cherries) are one
of my favourite fruits to grow. The shrubs are
spectacular in bloom and even more enticing when
the fruit is ripening. Needless to say, they have also
been very popular in the neighborhood in which I
live!
During cherry season, countless
people come knocking on my door,
just to see if they could share my
cherries! When I planted the orchard
(on my urban lot years ago),
it never occurred to me that I might
be causing a problem. The only thing
on my mind was making the most
production on a smaller holding,
never thinking about the frenzy these
cherries would cause in the neighborhood!
In order to understand how this
fabulous fruit was developed it is
necessary to understand a little bit of
fruit breeding history. Thousands of
years ago, the sweet cherry (Prunus
avium) was crossed with the Mongolian
cherry (Prunus fruiticosa) which
resulted in the sour cherry (Prunus
cerasus). During the 20th Century,
much breeding has occurred to increase
the cold hardiness of the sour
cherry which results in better survival
in colder areas (like ours). For over
60 years there have been many, many
people involved in the quest to develop
a successful cherry for our region.
For those involved with these breeding
programs the fabulous dwarf sour
cherry is often fondly referred to as
the prairie cherry!
The dwarf sour cherry (Prunus
cerasus) is truly a dwarf sour cherry
and is not grafted but grows on its
own rootstock. In 1999, ‘SK Carmine
Jewel’ was released after many years
of work by people in the Horticulture
branch of the University of Saskatchewan
as a dwarf sour cherry cultivar.
It is a very attractive shrub with
glossy leaves and reaches a height of
about 2 metres (6.5 feet). Each spring
you will be rewarded with a showy
bloom. The flowers are white and
large and look spectacular against the
glossy green foliage. The fruit when
ripe has a dark purple skin and flesh
and has a small pit in relation to the
fruit size. It matures in late July or
early August.
After growing this cherry and a
number of other cultivars, a few
things have become apparent. They
do sucker which makes them less
attractive due to increased maintenance.
I have found that the Romance
series of cherries do sucker more
rapidly than ‘SK Carmine Jewel’.
The cherries also have more disease
issues than they had originally. When
conditions are right my cherries will
develop a number of common fungal
diseases of stone fruits. This year, I
am experiencing Brown rot which
affects most of the stone fruits and
occasionally apples when grown
in close proximity to stone fruits.
Unfortunately, this unsightly condition
does affect the amount of fruit
suitable for harvest.
A secondary concern is to ensure
fruit that is picked is appropriately
treated to minimize postharvest
disease problems. Personally, I like
to pick and process in basically the
same time frame and usually try
to pick when the ambient outside
temperature is cool. With any harvesting
it is important to reduce the
temperature of the produce quickly to
maximize the quality of the produce.
Also equally important is to minimize
the exposure of fruit to twigs, leaves
and other debris which could harbor
spores or other disease causing
factors.
Our harvesting practice is to pick
and pit simultaneously to avoid fruit
loss. We simply use a home style
cherry pitter made by Westmark
which is actually very efficient and
easy to use. I have used it for many
years and it just keeps on pitting.
The other alternative is to juice the
cherries. For this process we either
put the fresh cherries through a fruit
press either fresh or frozen. We have
found that the best way to do this
is to rent a commercial wine press
used for making wine rather than a
domestic table top juicer. Just for the
record, five years ago we had such a
bumper crop of cherries that we made
a couple of carboys of cherry wine.
After five years, it has aged into a
lovely flavourful, dry red wine.
It’s easy to judge
this powerful
Yankee
Slugger Aaron Judge, the current face of the red-hot New
York Yankees, is in the midst of what could be an historic
statistical season.
Since the pennant-race
drama concerning the
Yankees in the American
League East has been all
but over since the summer
solstice — the Yanks had an
insurmountable 12-game lead
in the A.L. East going into
August — baseball watchers
have instead concentrated
their focus on Judge and his
prodigious batting exploits.
The Yankees’ right fielder, a
mountain of a man at 6-foot-7
and 282 pounds, hit his 43rd
homer Aug. 1. His 42 blasts
by the end of July was a team
record, and it’s safe to say the
Yankees have had some powerful
sluggers over the years —
Ruth, Mantle, Maris, to name
just three. Judge was making
a mockery of the home-run
race in the American League,
13 ahead of his closest pursuer. His 2022 home-run burst made him the second-fastest
hitter in history to get to 200 career home runs, with only Ryan Howard of the Phillies
getting there earlier (658 games to Judge’s 671).
But the best part of the Judge story this year is that back in the spring, the looming
free agent turned down the Yankees’ offer of a contract extension that would have paid
him $213.5 million for seven years of service. Judge and his agent decided to roll the
dice, bet on him having a great 2022 season and then see what kind of offers free agency
would bring at the end of this season.
It was a great decision. If sports fans thought there was trade-deadline hype over
Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani, wait until the off-season and the free-agent
hype surrounding a 30-year-old slugger coming off perhaps one of the
greatest seasons ever. Barry Bonds ‘officially’ holds the single-season
From the
Sidelines
home-run record of 73, but it’s tainted by the scent of performance
enhancing drugs. If Judge were to carry on with his prodigious pace
and finish with 65 or even — gasp! — 70 homers, it might stand as
the all-time best in the eyes of many.
“Like I’ve said a thousand times, I’m focused on winning baseball
games right now,” Judge told MLB.com after a recent game. “The stats
and stuff like that, we can talk about that at the end of the year.”
Despite all the home run chatter, Judge says his No. 1 goal is to bat at
least .300, telling the New York Post: “I’ve always said a good hitter is a guy with a high
average,” said Judge, sitting at .300 on the nose on Aug. 6. “That’s what I saw in a lot of
greats (like) Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera. They hit .300 and the power came with
it.”
• RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “The late Ralph Baer, called the father of home video
games, conceived a prototype joystick in 1966, the year Toronto began its last NHL
championship season. Since then the Leafs have had lots of sticks, but no joy.”
• Headline from theonion.com: “Study finds joggers burn up to 200 calories from repeatedly
pulling down bunched-up shorts.”
• Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg, with a comment that’s hardly comical: “Let me get this
straight. Donald Trump hosts a Saudi-backed LIV tournament just miles from ground
zero where the Saudis funded 9/11. And the trophy looks just like the Twin Towers.”
• Another one from Kaseberg: “In a Missouri Senate primary featuring two guys named
Eric, Donald Trump said he endorsed Eric and took credit when an Eric won. If Trump
went to a basketball game he would say he was betting on the tall guys.”
• Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “San Francisco rookie righty Sean Hjelle, who
made his major league debut May 6, stands 6 feet 11. Well, they are the Giants.”
• Another one from Dwight Perry: “The Mariners have released pitcher Daniel Ponce de
Leon. So much for the team’s hopes of getting younger.”
• RJ Currie again: “Curling Canada has announced an unprecedented March-Madnessstyle
elimination event in September with a total purse in excess of $350,000. Talk
about sweeps-takes.”
• Headline at the onion.com: “Slumping Aaron Judge fails to hit home run in entire atbat”
• Headline at fark.com: “Rhonda Rousey suspended indefinitely from WWE after
grabbing SummerSlam referee post match instead of sneaking up from behind with a
metal folding chair as wrestling etiquette dictates.”
• Eamon Lynch on Gulfweek.com, on the LIV lawsuit against the PGA Tour fracturing
friendships: “It’s tough to remain pals with the roommate who moved to a sumptuous
new mansion but returned to burglarize and then torch the house you’re still living in.”
• RJ Currie to wrap things up, on Tom Brady celebrating his 45th birthday: “NFL quarterback,
winner of seven Super Bowls and married to a supermodel whose net worth is
over $400 million. Good luck finding him a gift.”
PIPELINE - CONTINUES FROM PAGE 2
“Leaving the line in place avoids disturbance from the significant construction required for
excavation and removal,” said Terry Kwasniewski, Manager Projects, at Enbridge. “It also reduces
risk of soil and slope instability, settlement and compaction that could compromise the
safety of active pipelines sharing the right-of-way.”
Line 3 decommissioning involves cleaning, disconnecting, segmenting, filling the pipeline at
strategic points and ongoing monitoring, even after decommissioning is complete.
Here is a look at the five steps involved in decommissioning:
1. Clean the pipeline: A combination of cleaning instruments (often referred to as ‘pigs’) and
cleaning solution are used to wipe and clean the pipeline.
2. Disconnect the pipeline: The pipeline is physically disconnected and sealed off from active
operational facilities, like pump stations, to prevent oil from re-entering the system.
3. Segment the pipeline: Permanent physical barriers are created inside the pipeline to prevent
the pipeline from acting as a conduit. This includes valves and permanent segmentation
installations. Valves are closed and permanently disabled, and small pieces of the pipeline are
removed so it can be sealed at select locations.
4. Strategically fill the pipeline: The line will be filled with an engineered material at railway
crossings, which can also provide protection against water conduits.
5. Monitor the pipeline: Cathodic protection will continue to be applied to the decommissioned
pipeline. It will be monitored with regular pipeline patrols, pipeline signs indicating
exact location, and depth-of-cover surveys, and it will remain on Click Before You Dig program
databases.
North with a pulse
The Hudson Bay Railway has long been a route to ocean water which has
been of interest to northeast Saskatchewan grain growers.
It is, after all, the shortest route to open water,
at least for a short summer season, and that
holds the potential to cost producers less.
When you’ve been an ag journalist in Yorkton for
more than 30 years, the potential of that route
north is not lost on you, especially if you ever met
Willis Richford of Norquay before he died in 2005.
Richford and the rail line north were, for decades,
nearly synonymous. For over 60 years,
Richford was a member, director, president and
subsequently Honourary Life member
of the Hudson Bay Route Association.
He worked tirelessly and was
about as passionate as one can
Ag Notes
be about something, in his case
CALVIN
advocating for greater use of the
DANIELS
Port of Churchill and the Hudson
Bay Route.
During the times we spoke, it
was evident he was a true believer
in the yet unrealized potential of the
railway and the port. A large mural proclaims
Norquay as the ‘Home of Mr. Churchill Willis
Richford’ as does a medallion produced by the
Norquay Chamber of Commerce in 2000.
I reflected on Richford when I read that the
Hudson Bay Railway will receive $133 million in
new funding to upgrade and maintain the rail line
in Manitoba from The Pas to Churchill. The federal
government will provide $60 million on top
of its existing support, and the Manitoba government
is contributing $73.8 million to the project.
The two levels of government made the announcement
in Winnipeg on August 3rd.
It’s funding Richford would have wholeheartedly
supported, although it is likely he might suggest
it was overdue.
The funding is for two years and will go to the
Arctic Gateway Group, a partnership between First
Nations and northern communities. Arctic Gateway
owns the railway, the Port of Churchill, the
Churchill Marine Tank Farm and other assets.
“The Hudson Bay Railway is an engine for
economic development, job growth and tourism
opportunities, and our government is proud to support
this vital transportation network,” Manitoba
premier Heather Stefanson said in a recent www.
producer.com article.
It is a great statement, but frankly, it’s one that
various politicians have echoed in one form or
another for decades, but in the end, the suggested
potential never seems to be achieved.
The latest injection of cash is clearly about Northern
Manitoba’s economic growth, not grain going
north to open water. That element of the port is
likely a footnote of Prairie history related to unfulfilled
potential, but the money does leave the route
north with a pulse.
Shepherd of the Valley
Lutheran Church
Richford would hope it is a step to more, but we
will see if that happens.
Health Advisory
on Monkeypox
August 13, 2022 - The Saskatchewan Health
Authority is alerting the public to the elevated risk
of acquiring Monkeypox through anonymous sexual
contact due to recent known cases associated with
this source of transmission. Information reported
to public health, related to travel into and out of
province, has prompted this alert.
22091SS0
Individuals who believe they have been exposed can contact Healthline 811
to determine if they are considered at risk or eligible for a vaccine.
Eligibility for the Monkeypox vaccine has been expanded to adults 18 years
and older who are close contacts or deemed higher risk for exposure. Referrals
are available through 811.
Monkeypox is a rare viral illness that causes fever, headache, swollen lymph
nodes and lethargy, followed by the development of a rash over a person’s
body. Monkeypox does not spread easily from person to person. It is spread
through:
• Close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact;
• touching bodily fluids or lesions of a person who is sick with the disease; or
• exposure to contaminated objects such as bed linens or clothing.
If you have recently been in contact with an individual with suspected or
confirmed monkeypox and develop fever or other symptoms of illness, you
should call HealthLine 811 or consult a health care provider immediately.
The Ministry of Health and Saskatchewan Health Authority have increased
surveillance for monkeypox and have alerted health care providers about
signs, symptoms and treatment. Health officials in Saskatchewan are continuing
to work with the Public Health Agency of Canada and National Microbiology
Laboratory in Winnipeg to investigate any further potential cases of
monkeypox in Saskatchewan.
cool cars like the Corvette or the LaDawri Conquest pictured here.
LaDawri was the first Canadian fibreglass car manufacturer, and honestly,
I couldn’t begin to think of another one right now. The Conquest
was unveiled in 1956. By 1957 the company had relocated to California,
an obvious move due to climate and population. I believe the Conquest
was sold in kit form and as a finished car. I’m not sure if it was designed
around the Henry J frame, but that was the most common undercarriage
due to the independent front suspension and proper wheelbase. If I remember
correctly, some cars were also built on the Volkswagen platform,
which required fairly extensive work to the car’s rear. LaDawri ended up
with a full lineup of cars, both full-size and compact. Between personal
innovation and the purchasing of competitors, they became the largest
fibreglass car manufacturer in the United States, going until 1965 when
the company shut down. I’ve seen several LaDawri projects popping up
for sale lately, so if you want one, they’re out there.
I was DEVASTATED!! It wasn’t a new vehicle but had low miles, new tires, and a tank full of gas. I
checked all five levels of the parkade to no avail. I reported it to the police and the insurance company.
Taxis were used to get to my commitments, and I finally found a rental at the airport. The feeling
of devastation continued with thoughts of it being in a chop-shop, or on the way to Ontario etc. etc.
The next morning while leaving the parkade, I made a wrong turn before exiting- it was a restricted
area. When I stopped to turn back, being in the lowest, darkest corner of the parkade, the headlights
revealed off to my right, a vehicle left stranded in a pool of muddy, slimy, snow & water. There was my
truck! It was intact except for some scratches on the roof because of the low ceiling & a broken door
panel. The police said that the thief, or thieves, used electronics to bypass the security system. All of
that didn’t matter- my truck was intact and it was restored to me. Ironically, the thief couldn’t get it
out of the parkade without the ticket that opened the exit gate, nor did he attempt to drive through
the barrier as it was under surveillance. Some personal items & loose change were all that was taken.
This incident reminds me of the things that occur on our life’s journey. We find ourselves locked
in Satan’s Parkade with no way out. We run around in circles looking for an exit. We can’t get out
because we don’t have the exit ticket to open the gate. GOOD NEWS!! Jesus is our TICKET out of
Satan’s slimy parkade. The amount required has been prepaid to expedite our release. This was paid
for us on Calvary. All we have to do is call upon Him. He will replace your DEVASTATION with His
RESTORATION. He is our key. It works every time. Please try it. You’ll be glad you did. There is joy in
Heaven over every soul that is restored to its Creator.
