They occupied the land with sugarcane in order to
make spirits (pinga) and gave way to the installation
of farm properties that became the strongest economic
force in the region for decades to come, thus justifying
the nickname of “Terra da Pinga”.
The city’s name comes from the brown Cambreúva
tree (Myrocarpus Frondosus), which belongs to the
Leguminosae-Papilionoideae family, known by the
natives as “Kaburé-Iwa” (Owl Tree).
History / Profile
Cabreúva was founded at the beginning of the 18th
century by a member of the Martins e Ramos family
from the city of Itu, whom, by heading up Rio Tietê’s
right margin, found pleasant weather, fertile soil and
an abundant water supply.
