OPPORTUNITY PROFILE | HEAD OF SCHOOL | ANNAPOLIS AREA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

GREETINGS
Dear Prospective Head of School,
First, thank you for your interest in Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS). AACS has been providing a distinctly
Christian biblical worldview experience for families in central Maryland for more than 50 years. Our mission states, “we
engage students in an education of excellence enabling them to impact the world through a growing relationship with
Jesus Christ”.
JobfitMatters has assisted our Board in developing the Opportunity Profile for our next Head of School. We pray it
helps you get to know us a little better. It will also provide you with an understanding of the unique God given talents,
qualities, and skills we are seeking in our next Head of School. Additionally, please visit our website,
www.aacsonline.org to learn more about us.
While no organization is perfect, we have been blessed over the last 50 years with an amazing faculty/staff, students, and
parents. Our next Head of School will help us build upon the success we have experienced and help us continuously
improve our ministry’s support of our diverse AACS community. One of our core principles is to “develop the whole
child,” so the next Head’s leadership and partnership with us should strengthen students’ faith, academics, arts, athletics,
and educational support experiences.
I have been blessed with seeing my three children graduate as “lifers” (attended K-12), and now have a 6th grade and 1st
grade grandchild attending the school. The academic, spiritual, and community experience my kids and now grandkids
enjoy is what drives my passion for our school.
On behalf of the full Board, thank you again for considering Annapolis Area Christian School. We are in prayer for our
next Head of School, as we recognize this will be a big decision for you and your family. We pray God gives you wisdom
and clarity as you consider your interest in our school.
Please reach out to Laura Coverstone (615-261-4623) or Ed Poff (860-983-0367), our JobfitMatters consultants with any
questions you may have and to start the process to be considered for our Head of School position.
Sincerely,
Michael Edmonds
President, Board of Directors

OVERVIEW
Over five decades ago, a group of parents met to form an academically excellent, biblically-based school to complement the
teaching they were providing their children at home and church. Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) opened in 1971 with 3
teachers, 21 students K-3 and held its first graduation of 12 students in 1985. Now the largest Christian School in the mid-Atlantic
region, AACS serves 836 K-12 students on four campuses. Today AACS has over 1800 graduates and approximately 98% go on
to higher education institutions. AACS graduates have been accepted at many of the nation’s leading colleges and universities—
Calvin, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Geneva, Gordon, Johns Hopkins, Liberty, Messiah, MIT, Swarthmore, University of Maryland,
University of Virginia, United States Naval Academy, Wheaton, William and Mary, and many more. Many are leaders in every walk
of life—men and women who use their Christian education to make a positive contribution in their communities and professions.
AACS builds on the Christian training students receive at home and church by instilling a love for God, a commitment to excellence,
and a dedication to service. Annapolis Area Christian School has grown into a robust community of learning that is setting a
standard for Christian education.
As Rick Kempton completes 11 successful years (retiring June 2023), the Board is seeking the next Head of School to continue the
work of building and improving the school. The next Head of School will have the opportunity to grow the many strengths of AACS.
First and foremost, the faculty and staff are exceptionally talented and are a “living curriculum” by exhibiting a vibrant Christian
testimony and sharing an enthusiasm for AACS’s Core Values. The definition of educational excellence at AACS is more than
test scores; we want to educate the whole child. Therefore, the faculty guides our students in acquiring and living by the wisdom
of God. Thirdly, AACS has exceptional facilities, and the Board is dedicated, supportive, and governs appropriately as we work to
further develop our campuses. AACS is blessed to have significant diversity- in ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, learning
ability, cultural background, and more- so students learn from a wide variety of student perspectives. As a covenantal Christian
school, God’s inspired word serves as a unifying foundation. While many schools are cutting their arts budget, art (drama, band,
choirs) continues to be a strong area of focus and achievement for Annapolis Area Christian School. Finally, AACS’s student athletes
learn the ideals of sportsmanship, lessons of character, emotional endurance and resilience, and the pursuit of excellence. AACS
offers over 40 athletic teams and 70% of Middle and Upper School students participate in sports. An outstanding coaching staff,
one that cares deeply about our players’ growth physically, intellectually, and spiritually, fuels the success of the program.
AACS’s next Head of School will need to be a gifted and experienced leader to address the challenges AACS faces, which are
similar to what many Christian schools face. While AACS is blessed with abundant facilities, planning for future facility needs
and fundraising remain a priority. Though intentional progress has been made to ensure AACS’s four campuses feel like
one, more work remains to ensure continuity to improve campus-to-campus retention. While AACS’s racial diversity provides
students opportunities for growth and enrichment; racial tension and conflict are realities, and these have been used as
occasions for students to learn racial tolerance and respect. While AACS’s racial diversity provides students opportunities for
growth and enrichment, occasions to learn from racial tension and conflict are also realities. The next leader needs to be gifted
at leading a diverse community and building upon the progress made to unify the Kingdom. Finally, the Board has prioritized
the quality of education of AACS over increasing enrollment for growth’s sake. If enrollment were to reach 1000+ that would
be a blessing financially, but the more important priorities are the spiritual and academic vibrancy of the school. The ongoing
Strategic Action Plan is discussed later in this Opportunity Profile, and it certainly will be reviewed and updated by the next Head
of School collaboratively with the Board of Directors. We trust the additional information in this Opportunity Profile will help
prospective candidates learn more about Annapolis Area Christian School and the Head of School role. For additional information
about AACS, visit the website at www.aacsonline.org.

MISSION & CORE PRINCIPLES
MISSION
We engage students in an education of excellence enabling them to impact the world through a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
CORE PRINCIPALS
Community of Partnerships
As a diverse community of Christians, our purpose is to further biblical understanding of life through Christian education, in partnership with families and the church.
Biblical Worldview
We approach learning through the biblical perspective (creation, fall, redemption and final restoration), striving to connect what we believe to what we do.
Educational Excellence
Continually seeking to improve our understanding in all things, we view excellence as a journey, not a destination. (Colossians 3:23)
Creativity and Imagination
We encourage students to be innovative and adaptable, serving Christ with an eye to the changing world.
Developing the Whole Child
God created each child in His own image with diverse gifts and talents. We work to help students achieve their potential
in mind, body, and spirit. We seek to develop students of integrity, wisdom and love.
“ENABLING
THEM TO
IMPACT
THE WORLD”

STATEMENT OF FAITH
Our Statement of Faith is the “who” and the “what” we believe. The Statement of Faith does not exhaust the
extent of our beliefs. The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority
concerning Truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe.
For purposes of our school’s faith, doctrine, practice, policy, and discipline, our Board of Directors is the final
interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.
We believe that God’s revelation of Himself is our cornerstone. The Foundation of the School is God’s revelation of
Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, as recorded in the Bible.
We believe the Bible is our guiding authority. The Bible is the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative revelation of God.
It sets the course for the development of an integral curriculum that can deal meaningfully and realistically with everything in the
creation. The Bible calls us to take all of God’s creation seriously, to learn to discern good from evil as we live in God’s world, and to
work for the renewal of every area of sin-darkened life by the power of His redeeming love. We hold the Scriptures, contained in the
Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, to which nothing may be added or subtracted (2 Tim. 3:16; Rev. 22:18-19).
We believe we are stewards of His world. The Bible makes clear that God created the Heavens and the Earth, and every
living thing, by the power of His Word. He made human beings in His own image and called them to be the stewards of His world
(Gen.1:26-29, 2:15; Ps. 8:6-8).
We believe we are fallen. The Bible explains how His marvelously fashioned creatures, male and female, have nonetheless
rebelled against God and fallen under His judgment of death against sin (Gen. 3; Rom. 6:23). In this fallen condition, mankind lacks
both the ability and the inclination to be reconciled to God (Eph. 2:1-10).
We believe Christ is the redeemer and Lord of Creation. But the Bible also unfolds the wonderful story of salvation – that
God has sent His own Son to die on the cross to redeem sinners, raising Him from death to become the Lord of all creation (Matt.
28:18; I Cor. 15). Jesus is the eternal Son of God – fully God and fully man, and He lived in our place – satisfying the requirements
of God’s Law where we have failed to do so, and then died in our place – satisfying God’s just condemnation of our sin. Not only has
Jesus paid our just debt; He has also granted us grace to live in the blessing and abundance of fellowship with Him as Savior, Lord,
and King (2 Cor. 5:17-21).
We believe in the work of the Holy Spirit. By the power of the Holy Spirit, God now calls sinners to Himself through repentance
and faith to become the body of Christ, the Church. The Spirit regenerates our dead hearts – enabling us to respond in faith (John
3:5-8), testifies with our hearts that we are children of God (Rom. 8:15-16), produces fruit that leads to changed lives (Gal. 5:16-23),
comforts and leads us into all truth (John 16:5-15). The Spirit also gives gifts to every believer, that we may use our gifts to build up
the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12). We do not believe that any particular Spiritual Gifts prove our salvation.
We believe we are Agents of His reconciliation in the world. The redeemed people of God are empowered to serve as
agents of His reconciliation in all the world, called to proclaim the Gospel of Christ and call people to be reconciled to God (John
16:5-15; II Cor. 5:17-29; Matt. 28:18-20), and to adorn the Gospel message with lives of love and compassion (1 Pet. 2).

STATEMENT OF FAITH (CONTINUED)
We believe we are joint heirs with Christ. As the redeemed of God, believers in Christ persevere in faith and are preserved
by the Holy Spirit such that they are eternally secure in their relationship with God as joint heirs with Christ and accept the
responsibilities and privileges inherent in that relationship (John 10:17-29).
We believe in eternal life and condemnation. When Jesus Christ returns in glory to fulfill His Father’s plan, He will complete
the judgment and redemption of the world and bring His people into perfect fellowship with God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit –
forever. The Bible teaches that every human being will be resurrected – those who are in Christ will be raised to eternal life in the
presence of God and His love in the context of a New Heaven and New Earth – those who are not in Christ will be raised to eternal
condemnation poured out for their sin, separated from God’s favor, in the context of what the Scriptures call Hell. We believe that,
since the Holy Spirit is the One who brings us into a right relationship with God while we were sinners, there is then nothing that will
separate us from the love of God, so that we need not fear that true salvation may be lost (John 6:35-40; John 10:1-18).
We believe that the term marriage has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single,
exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Genesis 2:18-25). We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only
between a man and a woman who are married to each other (I Corinthians 6:18; Hebrews 13:4).
We believe that God wonderfully foreordained and immutably created each person as either male or female in
conformity with their biological sex. These two distinct, yet complementary, genders together reflect the image and the nature
of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Rejection of one’s biological sex is a rejection of the image of God within that person.
We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity (Mark 12:28-
31; Luke 6:31). Harassing and hateful behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in
accordance with Scripture nor the doctrines of Annapolis Area Christian School.
THE POSITION
The Head of School for Annapolis Area Christian School is the CEO, primary team leader and vision caster for the school, in both policy
and practice at AACS. While the Board role is generally defined to establish the broadest policies, implementation and subsidiary
policy development is delegated to the Head of School.
AACS’ next leader must have a vibrant personal walk with Jesus Christ and an ability to lead with humility and wisdom. As the
chief executive officer, the Head works in close collaboration with a wide range of internal and external constituencies to provide
comprehensive leadership for the school. The Head is expected to build upon the existing strengths of AACS and to provide strategic,
visionary direction for the school as it enters its next phase. This leader has made/can make effective key hires, has experience in
cultivating donors, and can communicate in a manner that inspires trust and confidence.
Ideally, this person should have an understanding of and passion for Christian education and have a track record of accomplishment.
The next Head of School needs to have demonstrated success in an organization of similar size ($14M and a team of 150+) and
complexity as AACS.
Currently reporting directly to the Head of School are the Chief Operations Officer, Chief Development Officer, Director of Kingdom
Unity, Director of Educational Support Services, Director of Athletics, Upper School Principal, Middle School Principal, Annapolis LS
Principal, Severn LS Principal, and Assistant to the Head of School.
FOR FROM
YOU

EXPECTATIONS OF THE HEAD
OF SCHOOL
Successful leadership in any educational institution is judged by how well its leader meets the expectations of its governing body,
meets the needs of its students, and responds to the input of its faculty, administration, parents, and other constituent groups.
AACS’s Strategic Action Plan (established in 2013) is ongoing and has four focus areas, detailed with action steps. The next Head
of School will continue refining and shaping this Strategic Plan along with the Board, further setting specific goals and objectives:
CHRIST-CENTERED CULTURE AND COMMUNITY:
align with the school’s mission, statement of faith, educational goals, and core principles.
diversity within unity in Christ in all areas, especially recruitment, onboarding, retention, alumni network cultivation, and local
church/pastor relationships.
RELATED METRICS FOR OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AND THE DIFFERENTIATED NEEDS OF STUDENTS:
1. Further strengthen our instructional program, incorporate student outcomes, best practice resources for preparation and
presentation, and add assessments for each subject, course, and grade level. Incorporate the child’s developmental needs:
spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional into the instructional program.
2. Meet the growing, emotional, and behavioral needs of students by developing and implementing a guidance program that
embraces the AACS community’s diversity within the unity of Christ.
3. Increase data-driven instructional decisions, enhancements, and course alignment by identifying benchmark metrics and
establishing a systematic process to regularly measure how we perform against our goals and educational priorities.
4. Strengthen and expand our effectiveness in meeting the needs of all students in ways that celebrate racial, cultural, and
learning differences within the unity of Christ.
5. Implement a 5-year rotation for the K-12 curricular program assessment schedule, including developing a scope and sequenced
course-of-study for each subject area.
