6 Thursday September 1 2022 Art on show at St Margaret’s College THE ST Margaret’s College Art and Sculpture Exhibition will be held from tomorrow until Sunday at the school gymnasium, 12 Winchester St, Merivale. Established six years ago, the exhibition always has a wide following. This year the exhibition will feature leading New Zealand contemporary artists courtesy of Scape (Kate Woodley, Nathan Pohio, Audrey Baldwin, Neil Dawson, Heather Straka, Gill Gatfield, Piri Cowie), as well as a collection of United States modern art generously presented for sale by the Rutherford family, including some truly spectacular original works. Other artists represented include Callum Arnold, Ben Reid, Jamie TeHeuheu, Robin Neate, Ira Mitchell, Esther Deans and Rose McKellar. This biennial event raises funds for The St Margaret’s College Foundation, the charitable trust established to enable students to realise their potential in a supportive and well-resourced environment through initiatives including scholarship, assisting students and their families through times of hardship, and promoting continued excellence in academia, the arts and sport. The St Margaret’s College Art and Sculpture Exhibition coincides with the opening of The Arts Centre’s Sculpture Festival, for a weekend of celebration of the arts and education. To purchase tickets for the opening night (tomorrow, 7pm) visit https://www.trybooking.co.nz/KNC. The exhibition will be open to the public with free admission on Saturday, 9am–4pm and on Sunday, 10am-2pm. Basketball side makes it three in a row CHRIST’S College’s top basketball team has won the Thomson Trophy for the third year in a row. Under the guidance of 2022 New Zealand Coach of the Year Ben Sheat, they are the first side to achieve the three-win streak since 2006. “It has been our toughest title, battling through the challenges of sickness and injuries throughout the season,” Sheat said. “But the boys rose to the occasion in the final, winning 99–81 against St Thomas of Canterbury College. “It was an awesome atmosphere for the game, with a crowd of about 1500 at Cowles Stadium. The support was outstanding, and the boys delivered a true team effort, with everyone making a major contribution. “For our Year 13 players, it was a great way to end a massive season.” Sheat, who has steered the side for five years, also lauded the commitment and achievements of the whole squad. “Throughout the season, all the boys have shown great resilience, powering up for each game and never backing away from the challenge.” Standout guard Tom Harrison – scoring 36 points – was named most valuable player in the final, while Hunter Adam was in equally fine form, adding a further 27 points.
