Art on show at St Margaret’s College<br />
THE ST Margaret’s College<br />
Art and Sculpture Exhibition<br />
will be held from tomorrow<br />
until Sunday at the school<br />
gymnasium, 12 Winchester St,<br />
Merivale.<br />
Established six years ago,<br />
the exhibition always has a<br />
wide following. This year the<br />
exhibition will feature leading<br />
New Zealand contemporary<br />
artists courtesy of Scape (Kate<br />
Woodley, Nathan Pohio,<br />
Audrey Baldwin, Neil Dawson,<br />
Heather Straka, Gill Gatfield,<br />
Piri Cowie), as well as a collection<br />
of United States modern<br />
art generously presented for<br />
sale by the Rutherford family,<br />
including some truly spectacular<br />
original works. Other<br />
artists represented include<br />
Callum Arnold, Ben Reid,<br />
Jamie TeHeuheu, Robin Neate,<br />
Ira Mitchell, Esther Deans and<br />
Rose McKellar.<br />
This biennial event raises<br />
funds for The St Margaret’s<br />
College Foundation, the<br />
charitable trust established to<br />
enable students to realise their<br />
potential in a supportive and<br />
well-resourced environment<br />
through initiatives including<br />
scholarship, assisting<br />
students and their families<br />
through times of hardship,<br />
and promoting continued<br />
excellence in academia, the<br />
arts and sport.<br />
The St Margaret’s College<br />
Art and Sculpture Exhibition<br />
coincides with the opening of<br />
The Arts Centre’s Sculpture<br />
Festival, for a weekend of<br />
celebration of the arts and<br />
education.<br />

Basketball side makes it three in a row<br />
CHRIST’S College’s top<br />
basketball team has won the<br />
Thomson Trophy for the third<br />
year in a row.<br />
Under the guidance of <strong>2022</strong><br />
New Zealand Coach of the Year<br />
Ben Sheat, they are the first side<br />
to achieve the three-win streak<br />
since 2006.<br />
“It has been our toughest title,<br />
battling through the challenges<br />
of sickness and injuries throughout<br />
the season,” Sheat said.<br />
“But the boys rose to the occasion<br />
in the final, winning 99–81<br />
against St Thomas of Canterbury<br />
College.<br />
“It was an awesome atmosphere<br />
for the game, with a crowd<br />
of about 1500 at Cowles Stadium.<br />
The support was outstanding,<br />
and the boys delivered a true<br />
team effort, with everyone making<br />
a major contribution.<br />
“For our Year 13 players, it<br />
was a great way to end a massive<br />
season.”<br />
Sheat, who has steered the side<br />
for five years, also lauded the<br />
commitment and achievements<br />
of the whole squad.<br />
“Throughout the season, all the<br />
boys have shown great resilience,<br />
powering up for each game and<br />
never backing away from the<br />
challenge.”<br />
Standout guard Tom Harrison<br />
– scoring 36 points – was<br />
named most valuable player in<br />
the final, while Hunter Adam<br />
was in equally fine form, adding<br />
a further 27 points.<br />
