Residential project earns
major landscaping award
A RESIDENTIAL project on
Rugby St has achieved great
success in the 2022 Landscapes
of Distinction Awards over the
weekend.
Nationally, 132 projects were
entered into the awards held by
Registered Master Landscapes.
The awards were a celebration
of the quality trade, craftsmanship
and expertise of the best
landscapers in New Zealand.
Winning projects represent
the top echelon of landscaping
design and construction in the
country.
Behind the Rugby St design
was landscaping business Onlandscapes.
Their work won the 2022 people’s
choice award.
More than 5000 people voted
for the award, which was open to
the public for voting.
The Rugby St project was
designed for empty nesters and
created with order, privacy and
serenity at the top of the wish
list.
“They wanted a full makeover,
leaving only the existing Maple
tree and perimeter hedging,”
Ollie Newman, of Onlandscapes,
said.
“It was their preference for it to
be simply and structured so they
could enjoy the outlook both
during the day and night. It was
a privilege to construct this project,
and an honour to work with
such outstanding clients.”
Chief executive of Registered
OUTSTANDING: Onlandscapes work on this residential property on Rugby St won the people’s choice award at the 2022
Landscapes of Distinction Awards over the weekend.
Master Landscapes, Janine Scott,
congratulated all the award winners
from across New Zealand
and acknowledged the 50 per
cent increase in the number of
entrants this year.
“This represents a major step
forward,” she said.
“The landscape industry
is going from strength to
strength, with so much young
talent entering the industry and
some extraordinary projects
being undertaken by
businesses throughout New
Zealand.”
Teen boxer earns accolades after win
• By Chris Barclay
PROMISING teenage boxer
Bobby Brown outfought a
two-time national champion
to claim his weight division at
the Australian Golden Gloves
in Brisbane and be crowned
the best male fighter in his age
group.
The 14-year-old Christchurch
Boys’ High School student
returned home last week with
the boys cadet under 57kg open
grade gold medal after ending
Queenslander Chaise Courtney’s
15-bout unbeaten run via split
decision.
“He had two really, really
close rounds (in the Brisbane
final) and then he pulled it
together and he took the last
round clean,” said coach Holly
Sullivan.
Brown, who is targeting the
2026 Summer Youth Olympics
in Dakar, Senegal, swayed the
judges with his superior speed,
fitness and technique.
Sullivan was also impressed
as a member of the Woolston
Boxing Club’s original youth
intake in 2016 continues to
develop.
“He started fighting at 32kg
or something silly,” she said,
expanding on the long-term
goal.
“The Youth Olympics is the
pathway and the goal we’re
trying to put him towards. We
want to keep pushing at New
Zealand Boxing saying: ‘This kid
is keen’.”
Brown has a 13-win 7-loss
record and graduates from cadet
to junior class next year.
He then spends two years as a
junior before fighting as a youth.
“His losses have all been
against juniors or heavier
opponents generally, he’s been
stepping up a lot,” Sullivan said.
Brown is now preparing to
Young people awarded for commitment
A GROUP OF young people
have received awards for their
contributions to the community.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel presented
The Duke of Edinburgh’s
Hillary bronze, silver and gold
awards to 70 young people.
Some of the rangatahi will receive
their gold award from the
governor general in Wellington
later this year.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s
Hillary Award is a voluntary
programme of personal, adventurous
and cultural activities
with bronze, silver and gold
categories.
Participants have to complete
four sections – voluntary service,
physical recreation, skills, adventurous
journey – in each level.
At the gold level, participants are
required to complete a residential
project.
The programme was designed
to challenge young people to
leave their comfort zones and
push their personal development.
On top of volunteering work
with the Salvation Army, Local
Hospice and St Vincent De-Paul
centres, these young people
supported refugees and migrant
children.
Mentor and award leader
Chris Allan, who delivered the
programme through his Joshua
Foundation organisation, said
the students were also involved
with sport teams and individual
sports.
“Some of these young people
have achieved regional and
national honours in their chosen
physical recreation,” he said.
“They have engaged in an
arduous 30km tramp in the
Oxford area at a bronze level,
a 50km tramp at a silver level
around the Porters Pass and
Lake Lyndon area, and a fourday
tramp in Arthur’s Pass
national park.”
Established in 2004, the
Joshua Foundation provides
programmes to empower young
people within the community.
ACHIEVEMENTS: Hornby
Water and environment key
issues for new candidate
ADVERTORIAL
Avonhead resident Dr Laly Samuel will be
standing as an independent in the upcoming
local body elections, vying for a seat on the
Christchurch City Council for the Waimairi ward
and one of two seats on the Community Board for
the Waimairi/Fendalton/Harewood Ward .
An academic and scientist, Dr Samuel has
gained extensive international experience and
recognition, with awards including the Garshom
International Award she received in Norway in
2019. She was also named as one of the finalists
in the Women of Influence Award – International
category New Zealand in 2015.
Originally from India, Dr Samuel moved to
New Zealand with her husband and two children
in 2002. Prior to that they lived in Japan for 11
years, where Dr Samuel worked as a scientist and
undertook post-doctoral study.
After three years in Wellington, during which
Dr Samuel was a team leader at the Measurements
Standards Laboratory of New Zealand (MSL)
under the Crown Research Institute, Industrial
Research Ltd , she moved to Christchurch where
she continued her job with MSL under Callaghan
Innovation, a role she held until 2016, before
deciding to take a break from her professional life.
Always part of her busy schedule, community
work now has an even stronger focus for Dr
Samuel. This involves assisting Indian immigrants
to settle into New Zealand life. She is active in her
local church, St Christopher’s, and along with her
husband helps the Kerala community group with
personal and cultural matters.
She is also a member of the Christchurch
Multicultural Council and the Christchurch
International Group.
With her scientific and management
background, her experience with ethnic
communities, as well as her commitment to
helping the community, Dr Samuel believes that
she will be a competent candidate.
If successful, her main focus will be on
removing chlorination from the city’s water,
with reducing the city’s carbon footprint also an
important issue for her. She supports the new
stadium but was disappointed that solar panels
were not included in the design.
“I am also against the 1.4 per cent annual rate
increase that Christchurch people will have to pay
to fund the stadium’s construction. I believe the
government should contribute more.”
The situation Bromley residents are dealing
with also concerns Dr Samuel.
“The odour and pollution being created is
affecting not just Bromley, but many parts of the
city, and the toxic particles can cause health issues.
“With my international scientific and
management experience, I believe I could
contribute a lot to council committees dealing
with issues like these, and many others.”
Her campaign strategy will include meeting
with people as she believes it is important to
interact with people and discuss their issues.
“I already know a significant number of people
in the Waimairi Ward, and I look forward to
meeting many more, and going on to represent
them after the election.”

Basketball side makes it three in a row
CHRIST’S College’s top
basketball team has won the
Thomson Trophy for the third
year in a row.
Under the guidance of 2022
New Zealand Coach of the Year
Ben Sheat, they are the first side
to achieve the three-win streak
since 2006.
“It has been our toughest title,
battling through the challenges
of sickness and injuries throughout
the season,” Sheat said.
“But the boys rose to the occasion
in the final, winning 99–81
against St Thomas of Canterbury
College.
“It was an awesome atmosphere
for the game, with a crowd
of about 1500 at Cowles Stadium.
The support was outstanding,
and the boys delivered a true
team effort, with everyone making
a major contribution.
“For our Year 13 players, it
was a great way to end a massive
season.”
Sheat, who has steered the side
for five years, also lauded the
commitment and achievements
of the whole squad.
“Throughout the season, all the
boys have shown great resilience,
powering up for each game and
never backing away from the
challenge.”
Standout guard Tom Harrison
– scoring 36 points – was
named most valuable player in
the final, while Hunter Adam
was in equally fine form, adding
a further 27 points.
Back row: Senior B Head Coach, Joe Cook-Green, Santino Felitti-Duter, Gus Eglinton, Austin
Smith, Nic Book, Bruno Vaughan, Fergus Johnston, Ihaka Cate, Matthew Lewis, Robert Mc-
Clean, Ed Davidson, Liam Jack, Fox Gray, Senior A Coach Ben Sheat. Front row: Senior A Assistant
Coach Rami Hammond (left), Aston Nijjar, Truman Heath, Will Jones, Hunter Adam,
Tom Harrison, Jacob Clements, Jordan Braithwaite.
New spot for one-stop
equipment shop
Local trade store and hire depot, Totalsite Supplies,
is now in a new location at 40 Hammersmith Drive,
Wigram. Servicing both tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts,
Totalsite is a one-stop-shop for construction
and height safety equipment, tools, temporary
fencing and much more.
The Concrete Division specialises in tools and
equipment for the construction, concrete precast
and placing, bricklaying, civil and roading, concrete
cutting and grinding as well as plumbing and drainage
industries.
Totalsite are known as the ‘propping specialists’.
Over time, the propping team of Dean Frizzell, Ray
Blome and Denzil Smith have seen architects and
builders push the frontiers in tilt slab construction.
“Along the way,” Dean says, “we’ve continued
with further innovation to meet the demand. Our
certified square panel props have improved prop
designs, we’ve expanded the range, and adapted our
approach to meet every challenge faced.”
The certified telescopic props range in size from
1.0m to 14m.
Ray adds: “We can supply the entire package with
our large range of parts and accessories from shims,
panel sealants, burke bars, anchors, to brackets and
backing rods. Our service will include propping
plans for your next project, along with delivery of
the props to your site with all consumables required.”
Totalsite can also organise a crane if required.
For concrete boxing projects, Totalsite Supplies
provide MSB Form, which is specially designed
to withstand the difficult conditions of the construction
industry. With its rigid applications and
lightweight characteristics, this adjustable formwork
solution is proving a winner in Australia.
As Totalsite Supplies consultant Clay Davies notes,
“It’s the perfect alternative to timber pegs, lumber
kickers, walers and nails – and we have already seen
huge interest in the construction industry here in
New Zealand.”
The Access Division specialises in ladders, mobile
scaffold, and height safety equipment. Their ladder
range includes platform, extension, dual-purpose,
telescopic and roof ladders from leading brands like
Bailey, Branach, Ox and Warthog, with aluminium
and fibreglass options for the electrical trades.
For jobs a ladder is unable to reach, Totasite Supplies
stock mobile scaffold systems with platforms
ranging in height from 1/2m to 4m.
For work on roofs or other places where safety is
compromised, Totalsite Supplies provide height
safety equipment including harnesses, lanyards,
helmets, anchors, and ropes. They also offer height
safety equipment checks ensuring your equipment
is fit for use.
Consultant at Totalsite Supplies, Rupert Bryant,
says: “Too often, companies purchase or hire access
and height safety equipment that is incorrect for the
job at hand. The root cause of the issue is that the
tradesman is a professional at his particular trade
– not necessarily a professional in regard to safely
gaining height. So that’s where we fit in. We talk to
customers about their specific project, discuss the
range of options available, and only then recommend
the best option to the client.”
Tradies and DIYers are invited to visit the new Totalsite
Supplies premises at 40 Hammersmith Drive,
Who can you trust with your hearing?
It seems that these days, you can buy
hearing aids in lots of places: before long
they will be sitting on the shelves in
supermarkets! There is also lots of hype
about buying top-of-the-range hearing aid
technology at bargain prices. However,
most people will agree that in this life, you
get what you pay for; and hearing
healthcare very much follows this mantra.
The one factor that does massively
determine the improvement in your quality
of life through hearing aids is the person
who provides your hearing healthcare.
Patiently assessing your hearing wants and
needs, taking the time to get to know you
and giving you the space to ensure the
hearing solution is the best long term
solution for you is absolutely key.
If you have had a quote for hearing aids, be
this large, or small, we will be happy to give
you a free impartial second opinion and
check if there are any better solutions
available for you. We take the time to
listen and do everything at your pace:
overcoming hearing loss is not a sprint; it is
a long, steady journey! There is a reason
we have so many 5 star Google reviews.
Overcoming a hearing loss is not simply a
matter of buying some hearing aids. The
very best hearing aids available can give a
terrible result if they are not set up correctly
for you or are unsuitable for your needs.
These days, for most people, you do not
necessarily need to buy top of the range
technology hearing aids to get a great
improvement in your hearing.
Hear Again have extensive experience of
helping people overcome their hearing
difficulties. From a simple check to see if
your ears are blocked with wax, to the
provision and fine tuning of the very latest
hearing devices from the worlds leading
hearing aid manufacturers, the friendly
team are here to help, even if you need to
be seen on a weekend.
Come have a chat with us at The Hub,
418 Main South Road, Hornby, next to
Japan Mart from Monday to Saturday.
Email: info@hearagain.co.nz or call us
on: 03 974 1658 to start your journey
towards rejoining the conversation.
Conversely, buying lower cost hearing
devices does not mean they will be poor
quality. In most cases, lower cost hearing
aids are made by the same manufacturers
as the most advanced ones, so there is no
difference in overall quality. These aids can
be life changing if they are suited to your
hearing loss and set up optimally.
We believe in giving you options. As we
are 100% fully independent, we have
access to many different hearing aid
brands and can give you honest, impartial
advice. The solutions we provide you with
are not locked or exclusive to us, so you
are able to have them serviced anywhere
in the world, should this be needed.
