father rush into the room. John’s face was contorted in an expression<br />
Danny had never seen on his father’s face before … fear.<br />
“There was a shooting. The Republicans … well, they killed one of<br />
the British.” “What?!” Danny’s mind pictured vivid scenes of the<br />
soldier being shot, dropping to the ground in a pool of his own<br />
blood, all the people running from the shooter. John’s face crumpled<br />
slightly, and Danny could see tears welling in his eyes. “Look,<br />
Danny, you were lucky to have gotten out alive.”<br />
That night Danny lay in his bed, contemplating the words his<br />
father had said to him earlier. Lucky to have gotten out alive. What<br />
did this mean for Danny? That he would have to live in fear, or even<br />
worse – isolation – for the rest of his life? Danny threw his head<br />
back on his pillow, letting out a loud exasperated sigh. Would this be<br />
life from now on?<br />
