The Scottish
Crown
The Scottish Crown Jewels are made up of
three main elements: the Crown, the Scepter
and the Sword of State. In the coat of arms of
Scotland, the lion rampant appears wearing
the crown, and holding the scepter and sword
in his hands.
The currently preserved Crown of Scotland
dates from 1540, when James VI of Scotland
ordered the goldsmith John Mosman to reform
the original crown. That same year, King
James used it at the coronation of his consort
at Holyrood Abbey. The origin of the original
crown is unknown, although it can be seen in
its primitive form in the portrait of James IV of
Scotland that appears in the Book of Hours
created on the occasion of his marriage to
Margaret Tudor in 1503.
