THE
COST OF
FARMING
Oh, how things change!
Fresh off a year of strong crop prices and
solid profits, Eastern Iowa farmers are facing
new circumstances, including rising input costs,
lingering supply chain challenges, and uncertainty caused by global events.
In the short run, they’re sharpening their pencils to account for costs rising
across the board – for everything from seed, fertilizer and chemicals to hired labor,
machinery repairs and fuel.
That means local ag producers are now navigating choppy waters that also
include the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on food supply and fertilizer
prices, as well as the effect of lingering supply chain interruptions that began during
the pandemic. That’s in addition to the specter of inflation and rising interest rates.
But despite this cocktail of challenges, with careful management and a little bit of
luck, farmers and ag experts remain optimistic about where yields and markets will
take them this year.
