THE BUZZ Soybeans and pollination Most soybean varieties are bred to be selfpollinating. That is, the pollen produced by a soybean plant’s flower fertilizes the pistil, or the ovule-producing organ, of the same flower. Pollinating insects can improve both pollination and cross-pollination, which is known to improve seed set, or the number of seeds a plant produces per seed pod. Another benefit of such plantings is they help stabilize the pollinator population, which has been decreasing in the United States; populations, especially in Iowa, have dropped significantly, said Andrew Joseph, apiarist for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Within the past 10 years, pollinator populations in Iowa have dropped over 54.1 percent during the winter season, Joseph said. Chris and Ray Johnson have first-hand experience at dealing with the pollinator decline and have shifted some of their personal practices to accommodate losses. They are the owners of the Yaddof-Johnson Apiaries in Preston. Because of losses, the Johnsons were forced to frequently exchange the queen bees in their hives, resulting in higher expenses for the honey producers. In hopes of raising profitability, they switched from purchasing mated queen bees to raising their own. Raising their own queens enabled the business owners to not only save when it comes to growing their hives, but it also made them more knowledgeable beekeepers. This knowledge Lisa Schulte Moore, Iowa State University Natural Resources and Ecology Department helped them further refine apiary practices. Meanwhile, ISU’s Schulte Moore said she and fellow ISU soybean and pollinator researchers are working on gathering Iowa-specific soybean data to test how pollinating insects affect yields. Converting marginal acres that don’t usually turn a profit for farmers due to poor soil or hydrological conditions to pollinator habitat might make sense, particularly if doing so boosts the yields in surrounding acres, she said. “Here in Iowa, as we look at our agricultural landscapes, there could be opportunities where gains in production and gains in ecosystem services reinforce one another, rather than act as trade-offs,” she said. “To get there, we have to look further at data from Iowa fields.” n MEDICARE QUESTIONS?
