From the
EDITOR
Welcome to the Summer Issue! From lush body scrubs to high tech
serums to hydrating hair masks, here you’ll find all the new summer
beauty products to help keep your skin and hair calm and happy as the
mercury rises.
First, we delve into the science of skincare (p44) and decode today’s most popular
active ingredients and how they affect your skin, plus share an expert’s tips on how to
achieve healthy-looking skin all summer long (p66). Of course, skincare is not just for
your face and on p30 we share our favourite body care products to give you a glow up
from head to toe.
We also showcase two popular makeup looks for a hot girl summer on p108 –
whether you’re after flirty and festive or want to celebrate the skin you’re in, we’ve got
the tips and products to achieve them.
Curious about vlogging all your new beauty finds? We chat with one of Australia’s
leading content creators on how to master the art of beauty vlogging on p40. Plus, on
p88, we spotlight Shahna Smith on how she created her new makeup brand, Amplified
Beauty, and the obstacles along her way.
With the festive season just around the corner, it’s time to talk gift-giving. We chat
with a fragrance guru on how to select the perfect perfume for your loved ones (p80),
followed by some of the essential fragrances that smell like summer (p82).
It’s also the season to eat, drink and be merry! But before you drink that third
Negroni, you may want to read our in-depth feature on p100 on how alcohol affects
your skin (spoiler alert: it looks like a hangover may be the least of our concerns).
If you’re in the market for a ‘tweakment’ or two before party season, you won’t
want to miss our feature on six of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures
on p92. From anti-wrinkle injections and fillers to laser skin resurfacing and
microneedling, we give you the facts on what they can treat and what outcomes you
can expect.
Finally, we wish everyone a safe holiday season filled with joy and happiness!
MELISSA DOYLE NEW
SMOOTHGLO AMBASSADOR
Australian TV presenter and radio
host Melissa Doyle has recently been
announced as the new ANZ ambassador
for SmoothGlo.
SmoothGlo by Lumenis is an innovative,
clinically validated aesthetic treatment
that combines IPL and RF microneedling
technologies to target skin tone, texture
and volume in a single session.
‘SmoothGlo is a unique 3-in-1 treatment
that targets skin texture, tone, laxity and
lack of volume. I figure lifting weights is
good for my body, why not see what it can
do for the muscles in my face!’ says Doyle.
‘I’m interested in the concept of
reinvigorating my skin’s own ability to
repair itself. Our collagen production starts
to decline from our 20s, so I’m definitely
interested to find ways to give Mother
Nature a bit of a helping hand.
‘I always ask other women what they
use on their skin or hair, what lipstick
they use or where they bought their
dress! This is my way of sharing my skin
health experience and educating other
women about what non-surgical options
are available, if that’s what they might be
interested in.
‘I feel positive that I’m doing something
for myself. My skin health is important to
me and I feel empowered looking after it.’
BODY
ESSENTIALS
GET YOUR BEACH BAG READY!
SUMMER’S CALLING AND WE’VE GOT
THE “IT LIST” OF PRODUCTS TO GIVE
YOUR WHOLE BODY A GLOW UP.
Skincare is not just for your face! Just like the cuttingedge
ingredients and technologies found in products
for your face and neck, today’s body lotions, scrubs and
oils are packed with active ingredients such as powerful
botanicals, antioxidants and peptides.
Buff away dull, dry skin with an energising exfoliator,
and invest in targeted body treatment elixirs to smooth
your skin from head to toe. Here are our picks of the
most coveted body cleansers, serums and moisturisers
on the market.

www.cosbeauty.com.au 31

BEAUTY
CLEAN
& BUFF
Just like your face needs a clean
canvas before applying products to it,
so too does your body. Wash off the
day’s dirt, sweat, perfume, products
and sunscreen with a body cleanser
or body wash. Look for sulfate-free
body cleansers as they won’t strip
skin of its natural oils. As a general
rule, steer clear of heavily scented
cleansing products and avoid long,
hot showers.
Use an exfoliator a few times a
week, and before self-tanning, to
smooth and polish the skin. Natural
antioxidants contained in some
exfoliators can help target skin
aliments such as dryness and flaking.
Body scrubs are a great way to get
rid of dry skin, help smooth bumps
and even out skin tone, and get the
blood circulating around the body.
SHIELD
& PROTECT
Sunscreen is hands-down the most important skincare
product you could ever own. Wearing sunscreen daily will
help defend your skin from damaging UVB and UVA rays
and help prevent sun spots (pigmentation) and wrinkles.
Always choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen to block both
UVA and UVB rays and aim for a minimum sun protection
factor (SPF) of 30. Apply 20 minutes before exposure and
reapply every two hours, regardless of SPF rating. Apply
at least one teaspoon per limb, one for the front of the
body, one for the back and one for the head. A full body
application for an adult should be at least 35mL, or
seven teaspoons.
CELEBRITY SPRAY
TAN ARTIST
STACEY
MCPHERSON’S
SELF-TANNING TIPS
1. Exfoliate
To create the perfect tan you need
the perfect canvas, says Stacey. She uses
the Three Warriors Tasmanian Sand Scrub
and Exfoliating Glove to prep skin.
Afterwards, always moisturise hands and feet
before you tan to prevent uneven colouring
on drier areas.
2. Set your tan
Apply the tan, blend and then set using a
fresh eco-friendly tanning mitt or a blending
brush after application for a final blend and
polish. Setting your tan will ensure that your
tan is seamless from head to toe.
3. No soap
Don’t use soap for the first wash after
“marinating” time. Stacey says this will help
with tan longevity. You shouldn’t shower for
at least another 8 hours to allow the tan to
fully develop.
4. Layering your tan
To extend and refresh your glow,
Stacey uses the Three Warriors Face Tan
Aqua Mist, Body Tan Aqua Mist or Gradual
Tanner. These will help to add colour to any
areas that are fading.
‘For the body, I like to mix a tan extender into
my moisturiser to hydrate skin and prolong
the tan,’ she says. ‘Never spray tan over an
old tan! Biggest tanning no-no!’
5. Kindness
Be kind to yourself if you’re a first timer
to self-tanning!
Mastering
FEATURE
the art
of beauty
vlogging
KRISTINE FERNANDEZ, SOCIAL MEDIA
COACH, DAILY VLOGGER AND NIKON
CREATORS PARTNER, SHARES HER TOP TIPS
ON HOW TO UP YOUR VLOGGING GAME.
Kristine Fernandez
Beauty vlogs have become some of the
most popular videos on YouTube over
the past 10 years and we continuously
see influencers and lifestyle gurus make
the switch to vlogging across all their
social media platforms.
The key to the success of beauty
vlogging lies visually in the aesthetics.
While beauty and makeup are at the
centre of the content, it’s also very
important to make sure every aspect
of your vlog is appealing to the viewer,
whether it’s the editing, the onscreen
text or even your background and setup.
When it comes to creating beauty
vlogs, the main thing to keep in mind
is what your audience is interested in
– and, generally speaking, it’s that final
outcome that they’re really looking for.
For example, what are they going to
learn from this video?
Vlogs are also a great opportunity to
involve your audience and keep them
engaged rather than talk at them. An

REC•
additional tip is to create a B-roll as well as your A-roll. A-roll
is the main content you will use in your blog, which could
be you highlighting certain products or chatting to the
camera. B-roll is a back-up roll, or footage which can
be used in place of something else. I might pop
my camera on my tripod and tilt the camera to a
product I am wanting to highlight. This reduces
the footage of you speaking directly to the
camera and offers different shots of products,
ie, a cream on your hand or holding a bottle.
This allows you to show the audience, rather
than tell them, about the product.
BACKGROUND IS
EVERYTHING
For beauty vlogs, people want to learn
a technique that is going to help them
enhance their features. What this means
in terms of setting up your vlogging space
is a backdrop that will allow your skills to
shine! For beauty vlogs specifically, great
backdrops include things like a neutral
curtain, where the light is coming from in
front of you and you have that soft curtain
behind you. This enables the audience to view
everything you’re showing them without the
background taking away from the focal point of
the video.
At the end of the day, the backdrop needs to
complement what’s happening in the foreground, and
if the curtain doesn’t work for your space, any neutral
background will work a charm. Another key thing to note
is the way light bounces off surfaces. The neutral background
ensures you’re not having all different colours bouncing off of
you or your products in the video.
LIGHTING
Following on from my last point, let’s talk about lighting. If you don’t have
some form of artificial lighting such as a ring light or studio lights, placing your
camera in front of a window where soft, natural light can shine through will also
do the trick. A key thing to note is that the natural light should not be direct
sunlight as this will distort the lighting and affect the quality of your video.
MUST-HAVE VLOGGING GADGETS
The must-have vlogging gadgets have to include the Nikon Z 30 camera
(www.Nikon.com.au RRP $1,349). This new lightweight camera is great for
vlogging. It has a microphone jack, which plays a really important role in
providing your audience with quality sound. With the microphone jack, you
can use a Bluetooth microphone (I use the Rode Wireless Go) or a directional
microphone tethered by a cord.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 41

FEATURE
Even though vlogging is a primarily visual
experience, sound plays an equally important
role when elevating that consumer involvement.
Bad sound quality will make your video really
hard to watch and cause the audience to feel
disconnected from what you are trying to
showcase. One of the best features of the Nikon
Z 30 is how lightweight the product is. When
you’re jumping from product to product or
running around on a busy schedule, you don’t
want to be lugging heavy equipment!
For quick and simple editing, I use iMovie,
which is a free software on Mac, and incredibly
easy to use. You are also able to transfer content
straight from your Z 30 onto your laptop, and
then onto your phone so you can edit on the go.
For mobile editing, I use an app called In Shot.
Kristine’s
top tips
SHOW, DON’T TELL
For me, vlogging is all about the visual
experience. What I would encourage any new
vlogger to do is to use any opportunity they can
to demonstrate what they’re wanting to educate
their audience on, rather than talk at the camera.
Especially in the beauty industry, it’s such a visual
outcome. As stated before, showing rather
than telling is a really great way to increase your
audience engagement and make your content
more unique.
Due to the way social media has helped to
develop the art of vlogging, it has given creators
the opportunity to be their utmost authentic
selves. I believe that vloggers don’t have to
worry too much about tone, or if you feel you’ve
said something seamlessly enough. What you
can focus on, instead of perfecting, is to be as
descriptive as possible. Instead of instructing, use
descriptive language and adjectives to highlight
your actions.
UPLOAD TIMES
Another thing to consider is your upload time. My upload
time is based on when I know my audience is watching.
For example, if I know my audience is busy during the day
and loves watching YouTube or scrolling through social
media at night, then I will upload my content at nighttime.
If you’re new to the vlogging scene, don’t be discouraged
if your views or engagement isn’t where you would like
it to be. Upload times are very trial and error, and over
time you will begin to understand more about what your
viewers are looking for by initially making those mistakes!

HOW TO STAND OUT
FROM THE CROWD
The best way to stand out from a visual
perspective is your equipment. The Nikon Z
30 really embodies what vlogging is about. It’s
light and compact and provides that excellent
video quality. Another great component of the
Z 30 is the touch-sensitive vari-angled screen,
which allows you to see yourself and visualise
firsthand what your audience is going to see.
Nikon SnapBridge connectivity makes it easy
to transfer files from your camera to your
smartphone, so if you’re having to create a
cover photo for your video, this makes it easy
for you to directly transfer the jpegs to your
phone and edit from there.
I use a camera for my social media posts all
the way through to my online courses. Using a
quality camera i rather than your phone helps
to level up your content in terms of sharpness,
colour and overall visual clarity, and having
quality content will further enhance the quality
of your work
Last but not least... have fun! Don’t be afraid
to push the boundaries and create what you
love. CBM
SKIN
WHEN
SCIENCE
MEETS
SKINCARE IS SERIOUS
BUSINESS, AND TODAY’S
TOP CONTENDERS HAVE
SCIENCE AT THEIR CORE.
SKIN

CARE
Skincare brands
have poured
millions of dollars into research and
development, employing highly skilled
biochemists to create new products
delivered in formulations designed
to enhance both the function and
appearance of the skin.
The result is that today’s skincare
lines contain a whole heap of goodies
that can affect a real positive change
in your skin, improving skin tone and
texture and helping to plump out fine
lines and wrinkles.
Elite skincare formulations contain
active ingredients, many of which work
on a cellular level. Cell-communicating
ingredients such as Vitamin A and
peptides can penetrate to deeper
levels and either enhance or help to
inhibit natural activities.
Research shows that benefits for
the skin can be obtained from plant
extracts and essential oils as well as
vitamins, enzymes, phytochemicals
and more. Look for products
containing antioxidants, AHAs, cellcommunicating
and skin-brightening
ingredients, and intercellular
substances that mimic skin structure.
For the products to work, these need
to be at sufficient concentrations and
synergies to allow them to retain their
active properties.
The following showcases just some
of the common ingredients found
in today’s skincare formulations to
improve the function and appearance
of the skin.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 45

SKIN
ALPHA
HYDROXY
ACIDS &
ENZYMES
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), or
glycolic or lactic acid, are derived
from plant sources and milk. Glycolic
comes from sugar cane, and lactic
from milk. They work to exfoliate the
skin and give a fresher appearance,
reducing the look of fine lines.
Alpha hydroxy acids, at high
enough concentrations, result in
moisturisation and stimulation of
water-holding gels in the skin which
cause plumpness, firmness and
wrinkle reduction.
AHAs are exremely effective
exfoliants, improving skin texture
and promoting radiance. But start
out slow and apply AHA products
every other day before building up
to daily, to avoid irritation.
Enzymes are non-acid plant-based
exfoliants and are considered a
more gentle alternative to AHAs.
The main difference is that enzymes
work to exfoliate the surface of the
skin whereas AHAs can penetrate
deeper to aid in cellular turnover.

ANTIOXIDANTS
SKIN
Antioxidants are the skin’s bodyguards. They are substances that
the body uses to protect itself from free radical damage, which is
caused by scavenger molecules that attack healthy skin cells, usually
from smoking, sun damage, pollution and alcohol consumption.
Antioxidants help mop up this damage.
Antioxidants in combination, studies suggest, can exert a
cumulative synergistic action on the skin that is more effective than
single ingredient formulations.
Look for products containing Vitamins A, B3, C (more on these
below) E and D, co-enzyme Q10, idebenone, lycopene, grapeseed
extract, papaya, green tea, rosehip and resveratrol.
VITAMIN A
3.
SKIN
Vitamin A is often touted as the most effective
important topical ingredient to prevent, restore,
normalise and help repair damaged skin. Since our
body does not make Vitamin A, our skin becomes
deficient over time.
For that reason, Vitamin A is a very important
and necessary ingredient in all quality anti-ageing
product lines.
Arguably the most potent topical derivative of
Vitamin A is retinol (retinoic acid), which is widely
regarded as *the* anti-ageing solution. Retinol
encourages better cell function and turnover to
improve skin texture, increase collagen production
to address fine lines, inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase
to target excess and abnormal melanin production
(hyperpigmentation), and regulate oil production
to improve acne.
4.
5.
6.
Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) has really come to
the fore in the anti-ageing war, taking its place
alongside skincare veterans Vitamins A and
C. Vitamin B3 increases ceramide production
to increase natural hydration levels and skin
luminosity; helps prevent the transfer of melanin
from melanocyte to keratinocyte and thereby
reducing hyperpigmentation; increases the
natural immunity of the skin to defend against
environmental stress; and reduces excess oil
production. (Now that’s a busy little B!)
Niacinamide, the physiologically active form
of Vitamin B3, is part of the Vitamin B group and
is water soluble. Used in anti-ageing products,
studies have shown it stimulates collagen synthesis
and fatty acid levels in skin.
Typically used in serum form, Vitamin B3 can
effectively treat acne, fade hyperpigmentation
and improve skin barrier function, as well as
help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It provides
antioxidant properties for the skin and it has also
been shown to have anti-inflammatory and healing
properties, as well as help reduce skin sensitivity.

7.
6.
8.
9.
10.
VITAMIN C
2.
3.
1.
4.
5.
As L-ascorbic acid – the form of Vitamin C that
the majority of medical papers refer to as being
most active on human skin cells – Vitamin
C works to increase collagen production to
reduce fine lines and minimise scarring and is a
potent anti-inflammatory.
Vitamin C repairs and rejuvenates the skin. It
also helps inhibit tyrosinase activity to address
hyperpigmentation. Vitamins A and B are
thought to perform best in a slightly alkaline
environment, which means it is best to use
these vitamins together, while applying Vitamin
C, which operates best at a lower acidic pH,
separately.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant found naturally in
the skin, which works with other antioxidants to
prevent free radical damage. These are volatile
molecules so look for a stabilised Vitamin
C product to help reinforce the skin’s own
defences and prevent long-term damage.
HYALURONIC
ACID
SKIN
Hyaluronic acid is what gives skin its volume
and fullness. One of its many claims to fame
is that it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight
in water (which equates to being a super
skin hydrator!).
Also known as hyaluronan or sodium
hyaluronate, hyaluronic acid occurs naturally
in the human body and is central to regulating
cell growth and renewal. It is found extensively
in connective, epithelial and neural cells. As
such, hyaluronic acid has found its way into
many skincare products, particularly antiwrinkle
formulations.
Hyaluronic acid is primarily used as a
moisturising agent. Because of its ability to
“latch” onto huge numbers of water molecules
and bring them into the cells of the skin, it is an
extremely effective moisturiser.
The fact that this acid binds with water
accounts for the special interest in hyaluronic
acid in cosmetic enhancement. When injected
under the skin in the form of dermal fillers, it
provides fullness and plumpness at the site,
replacing lost volume on the face, filling in lines
and wrinkles and, depending where applied,
creating the illusion of more prominent
cheekbones and fuller lips.
For good reason, hyaluronic acid is often
dubbed as the key to the fountain of youth.
Look for products containing hyaluronic acid,
hyaluronan and sodium hyaluronate.
LIPIDS
Lipids are a large and diverse group of
biologically important molecules that
are essential to life. Fatty acids, fats,
oils, waxes, steroids and phospholipids
are types of lipids. Major roles include
cell membrane structure, energy
storage and cell communication.
They are used in skincare products as
an emollient and, because of their rich,
luxurious feel, many are designed for
use on dry, chafed and inflamed skin.
Lipids are naturally produced by
the skin and serve to maintain the
skin’s natural barrier function and
prevent moisture loss. Ceramides (a
naturally occurring skin lipid found
within the cell membrane) and evening
primrose oil (abundant in omega 6
fatty acids) are good examples of these
nourishing lipids. Also look out for
products containing jojoba, coconut,
macadamia, olive and avocado oils,
shea butter and wheatgerm.
PEPTIDES
Peptides are one of the newer ingredient groups
to hit the anti-ageing skincare scene and many
studies have shown significant results. Acting as
chemical messengers, peptides communicate with
cells to perform a specific function. They are highly
respected for their ability to penetrate the skin and
activate their target.
Peptides “turn on” the fibroblasts, which are
essential for building and repairing the skin and a
basic requirement for anti-ageing success.
Peptides are small molecules of at least two or
more amino acids chemically linked together. When
certain amino acids are combined, they create
specific peptides (the different combinations are
virtually limitless and many experts believe we
haven’t even touched the surface).
Peptides have a variety of functions, primarily they
help to stimulate collagen, combat what is known as
Advanced Glycation End (AGE) product formation,
which is a metabolic process that damages collagen
in the body, and reduce pigmentation.
The science came from the discovery that when
collagen is damaged by sunlight, it is broken up
into peptides. Certain peptides formed were able
to act as a signal to skin cells to make new collagen,
meaning we could improve wrinkled skin by
fooling the skin into thinking it had been damaged
by applying this peptide. Peptides are cellcommunicating
and can potentially trigger specific
things in the skin, so that they might improve
wrinkles, or firmness, or age spots, for example.

DNA REPAIR
DNA repair enzymes, stem cells and growth
factors have more recently become a hot topic
in many research sectors. A study of DNA repair
was even awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry
in 2015.
The future of anti-ageing, especially in terms
of skincare products, is looking towards ‘gene
creams’ that address the skin’s deeper biological
concerns: DNA damage and stem cell stimulation.
DNA repair enzymes are particularly exciting.
They seek out and then repair damaged DNA
from UV damage, pollutants and ageing. This
leads to healthier, less damaged skin, which
aesthetically means less brown spots, wrinkles
and dullness since those all tend to be signs of
DNA damage.
Yes, that’s right people, sunscreen tops the list! They
are, first and foremost, products to help prevent
damage and extrinsic ageing of the skin. Given that
UV light is the fundamental basis of environmental
ageing (and hands-down the most damaging
element to human skin), zinc oxide used in a broadspectrum
sunblock should be your number-one
skincare ingredient, protecting you against the
harmful rays of the sun. Look for sunscreens that
have both physical and chemical blockers plus
antioxidants.
SKIN
The
skin
you’re
in
As the body’s largest organ and one of its
most essential systems, the skin’s functions go
far beyond the aesthetic. The skin regulates
internal temperature; perceives external
stimuli and transmits the information to
the brain; protects from potentially harmful
substances; and stores essential nutrients.
Skin is comprised of three main layers –
epidermis, dermis and hypodermis – all of
which vary significantly in their anatomy
and function.

EPIDERMIS
The epidermis is the outer-most layer of the
skin and continually renews and regenerates.
Ultimately, all the cells in the epidermis
originate from a single layer of basal cells
in its basement membrane – these are
called keratinocytes, which are stacked on
top of each other to form several strata,
melanocytes and dendritic cells.
Keratinocytes develop in the basal layer
and rise, losing their central nucleus and
producing skin proteins called keratins and
fats called lipids, before being shed from
the surface of the skin as dead cells. As they
move towards the surface of the skin, their
form changes and they create distinct layers
known – from the bottom up – as the basal
layer, the spiny layer, granular layer, stratum
and stratum corneum.
In the spiny layer, the keratinocytes make
lipid fat cells which discharge as the cells
move up through the granular layer, forming
a moisture-carrying mortar around the basal
cells, which are now called corneocytes.
These effectively dead and flattened cells
form the protective outer layer of skin,
which is worn away in a process known as
desquamation. The entire process normally
takes around 30 days – although sunburn,
injury or cosmetically stripping the outer
layer speeds the process.
The stratum corneum retains moisture in
the lower skin layers, comprising up to 15
percent water. Moisture loss is regulated by
the lipids, while dead cells are cleared away
by skin enzymes.
Men tend to have a thicker stratum
corneum than women; they tend to have
more collagen and produce more sebum,
making the lipid layer of their skin thicker
and the cell renewal process slower.
Melanocytes produce melanin, which
contributes to skin colour and provides UV
protection. Dendritic (or Langerhans) cells
are involved in the immune system of the
skin. They consume foreign materials that
invade the epidermis and transfer out of the
skin to stimulate an immune response.
DERMIS
Between the epidermis and the
subcutaneous fat layer lies the dermis,
which contains connective tissue and houses
the arteries, hair follicles, lymph vessels,
sensation receptors, sweat glands and
veins. This thicker dermal layer is composed
primarily of collagen, which is responsible
for the strength and elasticity of the skin. It is
held together by a protein called elastin that
is produced by fibroblast cells. The dermis
also contains moisture-storing glycoproteins
and hyaluronic acid, which have the ability
to attract and bind hundreds of times its
weight in water. Here, collagen and elastin
production decline with ageing.
HYPODERMIS
The hypodermis, also referred to as the
subcutis, subcutaneous layer or superficial
fascia, is the bottommost layer. As the
deepest component of skin, the hypodermis
is made up of a loose network of fat and
collagen cells. It acts as a protective cushion
and helps insulate the body by monitoring
heat gain and heat loss. The thickness of this
layer can vary significantly in individuals and
in different parts of the body. CBM
SKIN
epigenetics
and the
skin ageing
solution
MESOESTETIC ® PRESENTS
AGE ELEMENT ® , A NEW AT-HOME RANGE
OF ANTI-AGEING SOLUTIONS WITH
PATENTED EPIGENETICS EFFICACY.
mesoestetic ® , global
leaders in medical and aesthetic
cosmetics, have developed an
anti-ageing solution based on the
science of epigenetics, which is able
to counteract the signs of ageing in
the skin and enhance beauty in each
stage of life.
The innovative products target all
the signs of ageing independently
and intensely, helping to treat the
loss of brightness and firmness, as
well as the visible appearance of
wrinkles and expression lines.
WHAT IS EPIGENETICS
AND HOW DOES IT
AFFECT AGEING?
As we age, so too does our skin. Genetics
can explain part of this process. However,
more than 80% of skin ageing is caused
by environmental conditions and lifestyle.
These factors promote the activation of
epigenetic markers, becoming the main
accelerators of signs of skin ageing.
Epigenetics is the set of external
factors that can effect DNA activity
without changing its sequence. Using
music as a metaphor, we could say that
genetics is the score and epigenetics is its
interpretation: the score is the basis, but
the final result will be largely defined by
its interpretation. Therefore, our lifestyle
plays a significant role in these epigenetic
changes, which in turn can activate or

deactivate certain parts of our genetic
code. Understanding this is key to
being able to synchronise our skin’s
natural protection and repair processes
and, as a result, being able to help
prevent or reverse the appearance of
skin ageing.
After years of research into the
science of epigenetics, mesoestetic ®
has developed age element ® , a range
of solutions that target the epigenetic
markers responsible for skin ageing, to
help minimise its visible effects.
Often multiple signs of ageing
appear at the same time, which is
why mesoestetic ® has developed
products in this avant-garde range
that can be combined to achieve a
synergistic and complementary action.
This allows for both the treatment of a
primary concern while addressing and
improving the appearance of other
ageing concerns at the same time,
making these anti-ageing solutions
100% personalised.
Tailored anti-ageing
skincare
age element ® includes three product
lines, all of which have an anti-ageing
epigenetic and wide-spectrum
antioxidant action that helps protect
skin from the negative effects of
external aggressors.
Depending on the signs of ageing
that you wish to target – skin laxity,
tone/texture, wrinkles, etc – by
combining products from the following
product lines you can create a tailored
routine for optimal results.
SKIN
ANTI-AGEING FIRMING
SOLUTIONS
If you’re looking to target skin laxity
and loss of definition, peptides and
phytoactive tightening ingredients
can achieve a visibly firmer, smoother
and more defined facial contour.
age element ® firming solutions help
combat flaccidity and visible loss
of definition of facial contours to
enhance the appearance of skin
texture and elasticity.
age element firming cream,
$149 – provides a tightening effect
while deeply moisturising. Improves
the visible appearance of wrinkles
thanks to its combination of four
types of hyaluronic acid in different
ANTI-AGEING
BRIGHTENING
SOLUTIONS
If your main concerns are loss of skin
luminosity, irregular tone and the first
signs of expression lines, stabilised
vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are your
main allies. The age element ® brightening
solutions have an intensive antioxidant
action helping to provide a visibly
brighter, more even-looking skin tone
and a revitalised appearance.
renewal and provide immediate and
long-lasting hydration. Ideal for dull,
lacklustre skin showing first signs
of ageing, and for skin exposed to
oxidative stress.

ANTI-AGEING ANTI-
WRINKLE SOLUTIONS
The appearance of wrinkles and
the deepening of expression lines
are a sign of thin, fragile skin and
loss of facial volume. Retinol helps
retexturise the skin and biopeptides
aid in protecting and restoring the
skin. The age element ® anti-wrinkle
solutions promote the mechanisms
of skin revitalisation to reduce
the appearance of wrinkles and
expression lines while helping to
prevent them from visibly forming.
consistent, noticeable skin revitalisation. The
three steps involved work together to elevate
good results to exceptional results.
The first step is the Cleanse + Peel,
which involves a deep cleanse and gentle
exfoliation and resurfacing to uncover a new
layer of skin. The second step is Extract +
Hydrate, which includes a painless vortex
extraction device that removes debris
from your pores while delivering intense
moisturisers that nourish skin. The last step
is Fuse + Protect, which is an infusion of
hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and vitamins
that work to restore, plump and hydrate
Tips
CHERYL ROSS, FOUNDER
OF MINENSSEY SKINCARE,
SHARES HER TIPS FOR
MAINTAINING GREAT SKIN
THROUGHOUT SUMMER.
WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN.
Cheryl Ross grew up in the country and
spent much of her time bushwalking
with her dad. It was on these walks he
pointed out and explained the abundance of
different native botanicals. This was the start of
Cheryl’s journey through the healing properties
of botanicals, and the inspiration behind
Minenssey Skincare.
A former international model and cosmetics
formulator, Cheryl’s goal from the beginning
was clear. She wanted to create a range of
skincare products, packed full of highly effective
and nutrient-rich Australian native botanicals,
to enhance skin health and boost radiance
while providing a calming and uplifting
sensory experience.
After years of study and research, Minenssey
Skincare was launched, a premium range
that harnesses the alchemy of science to
unlock the full potential and activity of native
ingredients. CBM
FOR SKIN THAT
GLOWS ALL
SUMMER LONG:
1.
Start your summer skincare in
spring by using the Minenssey Skin
Revival Clay Mask set. The skin’s
renewal cycle is 21 days, so by
starting in spring your skin will look
great come summer!
2.
Hydrate, hydrate and then hydrate
some more all through summer.
This applies to all skin types,
even if you have oily skin (fact:
oily skin is often a symptom of
dehydration. Drink plenty of water
so you are also hydrating from
within. A product that can be used
on all skin types is the Minenssey
Hydrating Quencing Aqua Cream.
3.
In between your morning and
INTRODUCING SKINMTX ® NIGHT RESURFACING
BOOSTER+, THE ULTIMATE OVERNIGHT SKIN
OVERHAUL FOR COMPLEXION REJUVENATION.
If the tale of Sleeping Beauty
has taught us anything, it’s that
beauty and sleep are like peas in
a pod. And it’s not just a fairytale –
science says that while we sleep our
body goes to work repairing and
renewing damaged skin cells and
making sure we wake up looking
refreshed and beautiful.
Our skin works all day to protect
itself from damage, but while we’re
sleeping it switches into ‘recovery
mode’. This is when skin focuses on
intense repair and regeneration
(up to three times faster than
during the day). Production of
collagen is boosted, harmful free
radicals are destroyed and cell
damage is repaired.
THE IMPORTANCE OF
A TARGETED NIGHT
SERUM
You can maximise the overnight
skin renewal process, when your
skin is optimally ready and waiting
5 carefully selected bio-compatible
growth factors combined with
vitamin B9 and amino acids. Each
growth factor helps activate different
receptors to encourage a variety
of core functions of the skin. This
non-animal derived placental-like
complex provides nourishment to
help boost visible skin revival.
The overnight serum also contains
a powerful combination of triple
AHA concentrate – mandelic acid,
glycolic acid and lactic acid with
salicylic acid. The water-soluble
AHAs help to shed off dull and
rough surfaces while minimising
the appearance of blemishes
with visible improvement in the
appearance of fine lines, wrinkles,
and uneven skin tone.
The lipid-soluble BHA reduces
sebum levels and helps refine the
appearance of enlarged pores for
clear, shine-free, smooth skin.
This product is also big on
moisturisation. It’s targeted to
hydrate and retain moisture in all
layers of the skin, using an advanced
complex of 7 hyaluronic acids (HA)
with different molecular weights.
This delivers strong moisturising and
film-forming properties, helping the
skin to preserve its elasticity, tone
and suppleness for an overall more
youthful-looking appearance.
Efficacious yet exceptionally
gentle, SkinMTX Night Resurfacing
Booster+ enables you to wake up
to a visibly refreshed, rejuvenated
complexion! Beauty doesn’t happen
overnight – until now! CBM
RICKY ALLEN TAKES US ON A
SENSORY TOUR OF XERJOFF,
A LUXURY FRAGRANCE HOUSE
COMBINING THE FINEST RAW
MATERIALS AND A BLEND OF
MODERN AND OLD-WORLD
PERFUME CRAFTMANSHIP.

Xerjoff is an Italian perfume
house which melds together
art, culture and fragrance
to produce four exquisite perfume
collections.
The luxury brand was recently
launched into the Australian
fragrance market by bespoke
distributors Agence de Parfum. In
fact, as soon as Nick Smart, CEO
of Agence de Parfum – Australia’s
leading niche fragrance distributor
– had the opportunity to smell this
unique range of perfumes, he just
had to include them in his avantgarde
collection of fragrances.
Xerjoff, the nickname of creator
Sergio Momo, given to him by his
Croatian grandmother, was launched
in Turin, Italy in 2007. Sergio grew
up in a family where perfume was a
passion of his parents, particularly
his father, who travelled the world
documenting and bringing home
unique perfumes and ingredients.
One of the early ingredients he
introduced Sergio to was the Alps
Mountain Orchid, which is extremely
rare and has a fragrance like no
other. Sergio’s father also instilled
in him the belief that ingredients
should be as natural as possible.
Before Sergio started Xerjoff, he
spent years learning as much as
he could about fragrances and the
different distillery process so that
his offerings would be visionary and
compelling, even to those with the
most discerning noses and distinctly
different fragrance desires.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 77

FEATURE
The result is the Xerjoff group
of fragrances, which form a rare
mix of Italian style, tradition and
innovation. The highest quality
raw materials are specially sourced
from around the world to create
precious perfumes that embrace the
wearer in an olfactory experience
like no other, set off by exclusive
flacons manufactured in Italy by the
best craftspeople. These essences
are created in Grasse, Spain and
Italy. Xerjoff Group also carries
out bespoke projects for private
customers, including Middle Eastern
and European Royal families.
THE ART OF
PERFUME MAKING
Sergio and his stable of gifted
perfumers use fractional distillation,
which is a highly technical extraction
process and makes it possible
to break down the scent of an
ingredient into various constituents
and isolate the exact molecules
that contain the desired scent.
The fractional distillery process is
then combined with a co-distillation
process which dates back to
the earliest recorded times of
perfume making.
In the past, getting the best out
of many of the ingredients was
incredibly difficult, especially using
the more natural ones, but not with
this combined distillation process.
The end result of this joint process
is a collection of some of the most
exquisite and unique perfumes for
women and men.
Some of Xerjoff’s world-famous
perfumers include Jacques Fiori,
Angeline Leporini, Mathieu Nardin
and Christian Carbonnel.

SHOW-STOPPING
FLACONS
Having studied design at university,
Sergio ensures all his fragrances
not only appeal to the olfactory
senses but they are presented in a
way which can only be described as
works of art. An amalgamation of
precious and semi-precious handcut
stones, quartz, Murano glass,
brass and gold are used in the
handcrafted bottles. These bottles
are then topped with the signature
Xerjoff stopper.
There are, to date, 163 Xerjoff
fragrances, each very distinctive
and appealing. Elle and Lua were
two of the first fragrances in the
Xerjoff range and they are still
best-sellers today.
In Australia, Agence de Parfum
has launched Xerjoff with 30
different fragrances, including
Elle and Lua as well as Shooting
Stars. Shooting Stars was inspired
by a Siberian meteorite shower.
It is housed in a crystal bottle
and enthroned in a leather
box embedded with a piece of
meteorite. This is the level of
presentation which Sergio demands.
Xerjoff perfumes cover many
different fragrance variations, with
more in the pipeline. There are
woody fragrances such as Kobe,
floral oriental such as Lua and
aromatic fourgere which is Nio.
The different blends ensure there
is a fragrance to meet the needs
and stimulate the senses of
everyone. CBM
Perfumes make meaningful gifts,
symbolising love and affection
and evoking shared memories.
A beautiful fragrance is something
everybody appreciates, regardless of
gender, age or style, however it can be
daunting finding the perfect fragrance
match for your loved one.
That’s why we consulted well-known
fragrance guru Michael Marzano, head
of training for Agence de Parfum and
Libertine perfumeries (found in Myer,
DJs and specialty stores). He has
helped hundreds of anxious presentseekers
to find the perfect fragrance
and now trains all his staff to do the
same thing.
Michael’s first rule of thumb is to
plan properly. Make a checklist so
that the salesperson has as much
information as possible to help you
on your quest. Your checklist should
include your budget and the would-be
recipient’s age, as well as the following:
• whether they are a mum (or dad)
• occupation
• personality type
• whether they are sporty
• whether they are highly allergic
• favourite perfumes or ones
they have worn in the past
• whether they dress casually or
more formally.
If you don’t have all that information,
Michael suggests purchasing a candle,
body wash or body lotion instead.
Many times, he says the customer
comes back and buys the perfume
next, as the recipient just loved the
fragrance of the body lotion or other
fragrant gift.
Companies like Santa Maria Novella,
which Agence de Parfum distributes,
now make all their latest perfumes
with accessories such as body
lotions, washes and draw sachets and
sometimes even candles.
When in doubt, a subtle fragrance
is usually received well, such as Aventus
for Her or Love in White by Creed. For
fresh and clean tones, Angels of
Florence or Freesia by Santa Maria
Novella are always a hit.
Invest in the time to take your
perfume present seriously – you’ll be
rewarded 10-fold when your loved one
wears it time and time again. CBM
WHAT ARE YOU MOST
PASSIONATE ABOUT IN THE
BEAUTY INDUSTRY?
Identifying and filling gaps in the beauty
industry. Still to this day, and from our
largest brands, diversity and inclusivity
is hit and miss. I endeavour to shift this
by using models of all skin tones and
genders. I want to use our platform to
help make a difference.
WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST
INFLUENCE BUILDING
A BRAND IN SUCH A
COMPETITIVE INDUSTRY?
I lost my Mum at 16. She had named
Amplified Beauty Australia prior to
passing. I registered the business name
and have worked hard from that day
onwards to make it happen.
This actually took leaving school,
working four jobs in my home town of
Broken Hill, relocating to Melbourne
and studying for my diploma in
makeup. I ate two-minute noodles most
days to pay for it but I was lucky enough
to score a job at Sephora shortly after
graduating. During my time there, my
experience, confidence and knowledge
broadly expanded and I decided to
move to South Australia to begin my
next chapter of building a business as
an MUA.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 89

BEAUTY
Unfortunately, I experienced a
relationship breakdown and ended up
couch surfing. At the same time, I was
making phone calls to begin bringing
my business plan to life for Amplified
Beauty. Three years later, I received
investment from Indigenous Business
Australia to begin the preparation for
my launch.
As a makeup artist myself, I
understood it was a very competitive
industry and that I would need to stand
out. I did this by creating an experience
for our consumers that goes beyond
our product – meeting with mechanical
engineers to create magical floating
displays where our products levitate in
store, offering high tech virtual try-on
and a unique packaged product to
attract attention. I was also heavily
involved in our formulation process to
fill a gap in the industry.
IF YOU COULD
RECOMMEND ONE OF
YOUR PRODUCTS TO
BEAUTY LOVERS, WHAT
WOULD IT BE?
The Tracey. This product was named
after my late Mum and we provide 10%
of all sales to Youth Off The Streets
charity. I like to think consumers are
“purchasing with a purpose” when
buying The Tracey.
WHAT MAKES YOUR LIP
PRODUCTS SO VERSATILE?
I created a very thin formula that’s a
little different to most mattes so that it
can have a diverse use.
Our products are almost a watery
texture so that they can also be used
as liquid eyeshadows, colour correctors
and blush.
They have a form of vitamin E infused
into the formulation so that the matte
NUDE LIP COMBO FROM
AMPLIFIED BEAUTY?
My favourite nude lip combo is Spanx
and Skinny Dip. Spanx is our numberone
best seller. You can use Spanx as
the lipliner, to shade the corners, and
Skinny Dip in the centre. This makes
your lips look fuller as it gives the effect
of “contouring” the lips.
WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
IS A CORE GOAL FOR YOUR
BUSINESS. WHAT CHANGES
ARE YOU SEEING IN THE
INDUSTRY?
I truly believe if you are not genuine and
do this for the wrong reason it shows
and easily burns because these days
social media and consumers expect so
much transparency.
We have championed diversity and
inclusivity from the start. It began
with not allowing heavy editing of our
campaign photos to show realistic
beauty standards. Recently we launched
#WokeWednesday where we will use
our platform to shed light on issues only
women have around the world. Our first
post was in support of those that suffer
from endometriosis. Our objective is
to have women who feel that they don’t
have a voice to approach us, to be
their voice using this platform. This can
become controversial but it’s a risk we
as a company are willing to take to help
other women.
I often visit local schools in SA and
provide empowerment speeches to
young females to share my story and
encourage them to take a leap with
their dreams. CBM
Anti-wrinkle inkle
FEATURE
injectionsns
QUICK FACTS
• Smooths away crow’s feet, forehead lines
and the ‘11’s’ between the eyes
• Brow lift effect
• Jawline slimming
WHAT IS IT?
Known under the brand names Botox, Dysport
and Xeomin in Australia, botulinum toxin is
single-handedly the most popular aesthetic
treatment. Botulinum toxin works by blocking
nerve stimulation to wrinkle-causing muscles,
which prevents the muscle from contracting
and smooths away wrinkles and fine lines.
WHAT DOES IT TREAT?
As a muscle relaxant, it is used to treat crow’s
feet around the eyes, the frown lines between
the eyebrows (glabellar lines) and the worry
lines across the forehead. It can also be used
to produce the effect of a brow lift by relaxing
the muscles that drag down the brow and even
in the masseter muscle to create a slimmerlooking
jawline.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
A few tiny injections are administered into
the lower layer of skin and the results kick in
around Day 4 or 5, reaching their full result
around 2 weeks and lasting on average for
about 4 months.
The procedure usually takes around 10
minutes and is generally well tolerated in terms
of discomfort – so much so that numbing
cream isn’t required.

Fillers
QUICK FACTS
• Used to add volume to cheeks,
midface, temple hollows and lips
• Fills in static lines, wrinkles,
depressions and scars
WHAT ARE THEY?
Fillers are used to add volume and
structure, fill deep folds, and smooth
fine lines and wrinkles. They vary in
longevity, composition and viscosity
but all are gel-like in consistency and
use a substance called hyaluronic
acid, which is found naturally in the
body and can absorb up to 1,000
times its own weight in water.
WHAT DO THEY
TREAT?
There are different grades of
fillers designed for use in different
parts of the face and for different
purposes – from creating fuller lips,
revolumising sagging areas of the
face, and filling in marionette lines,
nasolabial folds and temples.
Fillers can be injected superficially
to add volume to lips, fill in fine
lines, reduce under-eye circles and
hollows, or more deeply to ‘sculpt’
the face and add more contour,
projection, symmetry and definition
to areas such as the cheeks, chin,
jawline and even the nose.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
The areas to be filled are numbed
with a topical anesthetic, which means
you should only feel slight discomfort
during a filler procedure.
The type of filler (composition and
viscosity), where it’s used and the
depth of injection all influence the
final result, and how long they last.
Superficial ‘soft’ injections for lips, for
example, may last up to 6 months,
while firmer filler designed for
building and contouring and injected
deep on the bone can last 12-18
months. Depending on how many
areas, this type of procedure will take
anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.
Microneedling
FEATURE
QUICK FACTS
• Used for overall skin rejuvenation
• Effective for acne scarring and
other scarring
• Reduces look of pore size and
improves skin texture
WHAT IS IT?
Skin needling, or microneedling,
creates tiny punctures in the skin,
resulting in a controlled injury to the
skin which stimulates the skin’s natural
growth of healthy new skin. The
epidermis is left primarily intact so the
healing period is quick – which makes
it an effective laser or chemical peel
alternative for many.
Skin needling can be performed
alone, usually with a roller embedded
with medical-grade sterile microneedles.
For more dramatic lifting and
toning results, radiofrequency (RF)
micro needling devices combine the
collagen-boosting, skin resurfacing
effect of skin needling with the skintightening
technology of RF energy.
WHAT DOES IT TREAT?
Microneedling can improve the
appearance of wrinkles, scars, stretch
marks, skin texture and premature
ageing. By stimulating the production
of collagen and elastin, skin becomes
more even-toned and plump with a
youthful-looking glow.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Microneedling generally causes
some discomfort, particularly when
performed with radiofrequency, but
does not necessarily hurt. A numbing
cream is applied before the procedure
to minimise this.
After treatment, skin is red and
swollen for around one to two days,
with a light graze-like scabbing effect
forming over the treated area on day
two of recovery. Most people are able
to return to work and normal activities
within a day or so of treatment.
Multiple treatments are usually
necessary to achieve significant
improvement in the appearance and
depth of lines and scars. Treatment
effects are cumulative and can be
seen six to eight weeks after the initial
treatment with long-lasting results.

Skin
tightening
QUICK FACTS
• Non-surgical facelift effect
• Tightens and tones lax skin
WHAT IS IT?
Energy-based treatments for facial lifting
and skin tightening are increasingly popular.
These devices commonly use a form of
energy (heat) such as radiofrequency or
ultrasound waves – to target deeper levels of
the dermis to promote the production of new
collagen formation and remodelling.
WHAT DOES IT TREAT?
The procedure improves skin texture and
reduces sagging skin, as well as improving
drooping eyes, jaw line and neck, and
softening wrinkles around the mouth, eyes
and forehead.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Non-surgical skin tightening treatments heat
the skin’s deep dermis and subdermal layers
without damaging the outer layers of the skin.
These types of procedures are associated
with some discomfort. Many people report
feeling warm pulses under the skin, but this
does vary between patients and the type of
device used. Your practitioner will give you a
better handle of what to expect and will make
sure you’re comfortable during treatment.
There may be some swelling and redness
that gradually subside over the next few
days but in general most patients experience
little or no downtime. Results are usually
gradual, as the new collagen forms over the
next couple of months, and are typically long
lasting – up to two years.
FEATURE
Laser skin
resurfacing
QUICK FACTS
• Used for overall skin rejuvenation
• Great for sun damage, scarring, lines
and wrinkles, anti-ageing, pigmentation
WHAT IS IT?
Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification
for the Stimulated Emission of Radiation
and is used in the beauty and aesthetics
industry for an array of treatments,
ranging from the correction of skin
irregularities, pigmentation and wrinkles
to hair reduction.
Laser therapies work by targeting tissue.
The target tissue for pigmentation is
melanin, for spider veins it is blood and
for wrinkles it is water. Each of these target
tissues absorb a different wavelength of
light, meaning a different laser is needed
for each specific problem.
The advent of fractionated laser – where
microscopic columns of skin are treated
while surrounding skin is left intact – made
it possible to achieve results comparable
to traditional CO 2
laser resurfacing (which
can take years off your appearance) with
fewer side effects and significantly less
downtime. These lasers work by creating
microscopic thermal injuries that trigger
collagen production, stimulating cell
renewal and plumping out the tissues.
While not a laser, Intense Pulsed Light
(IPL) is another popular light-based
therapy for skin rejuvenation. It penetrates
deeper into the skin than a non-ablative
laser and does not injure the surface,
so there is usually no downtime. It can
improve skin texture and colour as well
as reduce pore size. IPL can effectively
treat some types of hyperpigmentation,
including age spots and freckles.
WHAT DOES IT TREAT?
Specific to skin, the benefits of laser
treatment include improving evenness
of skin tone and texture, reducing pore
size and the appearance of lines and
wrinkles, pigmentation, rosacea and
scarring, and helping to reverse the effects
of sun damage.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Fractionated laser resurfacing is typically
well tolerated. Numbing cream is
applied to help minimise any stinging
or burning sensation.
A milder treatment may take several
sessions, while one procedure is
usually sufficient for a more aggressive
treatment. You should expect some
redness, swelling and stinging like a bad
sunburn, depending on the type of laser
used (ablative vs non-ablative) and the
depth of treatment. This should continue
to dissipate over the hours and days
following the procedure. You may also see
some of the treated skin begin to slough
during the healing process, revealing the
new skin underneath.
Recovery time is generally between one
and four days, but it shouldn’t prevent you
from doing normal daily activities.
You should be able to see improvement
in the texture and tone of your skin within
the first week, but it will take around 3
months for the final results to be apparent
as new collagen and elastin is formed.

How
ALCOHOL
AFFECTS
your
SKIN SKIN
A NIGHT ON THE SAUCE
CAN LEAVE YOU WITH MORE
THAN JUST A HANGOVER.
WORDS BY JANE STABLER.
M
ost
of us enjoy a drink, whether it’s
celebrating with friends or unwinding
after a long day at work. For many, a
bottle of bubbly or a few drinks with friends is as
much about symbolism and the ritual as it is about
enjoying a tipple, which is why giving up the booze
can be a challenge – even for those of us with
impressive willpower. But as much as we may like a
wine or two (or three...) on a Friday night, there are
significant beauty reasons to lay off the booze on a
more regular basis.
So what is alcohol actually doing to your skin?
The bad news is, it’s doing a lot of bad things. From
permanent redness to premature wrinkles, the
sobering fact is that alcohol and your skin are not
friends, and they never will be.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 101

FEATURE
DEHYDRATION
The more you drink, the less
hydrated you are – and that goes for
your skin, too. As a diuretic, alcohol
forces water out of your body. That
makes your skin look less plump and
fresh the ‘morning after’ and, over
time, it means wrinkles.
Overdoing it on the booze also
makes it more difficult for your body
to rehydrate afterwards, and you
may experience dry skin the day
after a big night. Immediately, the
lack of water in your skin makes the
lines you already have more visible,
and eventually your skin won’t
bounce back to its pre-drinking
firmness the way it used to.
PUFFINESS & REDNESS
On the flip side, too much alcohol
can make your face puffy – usually
after a night of sugary drinks. This
is due to the inflammatory effect
that alcohol (and sugar) has on our
bodies. When we drink, it causes
our insides to become inflamed and
this presents in your skin as redness,
breakouts and puffiness.
The histamine released by alcohol
also dilates the blood’s capillaries,
and the result of that is redness
of the skin. While you may not
be concerned at the time, if you
consistently get flushed from drinking
– and that’s sustained over time –
the redness can become prominent
and permanent.

COLLAGEN LOSS &
BREAKOUTS
There are two things no person
wants to hear, but drinking can cause
both. Alcohol depletes vitamin A,
which is crucial in the formation of
new cells and collagen, which means
too much alcohol can speed up the
ageing process. Collagen loss is
accelerated, making your skin look
more weathered.
To add insult to injury, a night on
the sauce can also create or worsen
breakouts. Again, sugar is partially
the culprit here. Alcoholic drinks are
often high in sugar, and cocktails and
wine are among the worst. If you’re
over-indulging too often, this sugar
spike will show up as a breakout.
Finally, and we know this isn’t about
your face, but the average wine
drinker adds an extra 2,000 calories
to their overall intake every month,
which over an annual basis is the
equivalent of eating 221 doughnuts!
www.cosbeauty.com.au 103

The main culprits
So which drinks are your skin’s worst enemy? We’re not suggesting that we all have to
become teetotallers if we want good skin. We’re firm believers in having a good time
and many of us can enjoy a drink without going overboard. But if you are worried about
the effect alcohol is having on your skin, these are the top three drinks to avoid:
FEATURE
THE MOJITO
Sadly, the combination of
sugar and alcohol found in
most mojitos means they’re
particularly bad for drinkers
concerned about wrinkles.
The disruptive duo leads to:
systemic inflammation, which
can lead to premature ageing;
and also creates a spike in
insulin levels, which can create
that ‘morning after’ acne.
RED WINE
Red wine is one of the worst
drinks for your skin and
your face. Alcohol generally
promotes the opening of blood
vessels in the skin, which leads
to increased redness – and
red wine is one of the worst
offenders because it’s also a
histamine, which further adds to
redness and flushing. If you’re
prone to redness in your skin
or you suffer from rosacea, red
wine may quickly become your
worst enemy.
THE MARGARITA
It’s not just the combination
of sugar and alcohol that
you need to worry about;
the elements that make a
margarita so delicious are
also what make it so bad
for your skin. Sugar plus
salt plus booze means you
get all the negatives of the
aforementioned drinks, plus
a puffy face.

How to take care
of your skin and still
have a good time
The good news? Your skin has the
ability to regenerate itself and
your body has an amazing rate of
rehydration. But that regeneration
depends on how much damage has
been done. If you’ve been drinking
for 15 years and decide to stop, it
will definitely help your body going
forwards, but your skin is not going
to regenerate back to that of a nondrinker
15 years younger. The truth
is that once you destroy collagen,
it’s difficult to get back, but there are
ways to minimise the damage.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
How your body handles and
processes alcohol changes as you
age. An alcoholic drink leaves your
body in about three hours when
you’re 20; but by the time you hit 40
it takes 33 hours – which explains
why your recovery time is so much
longer and your hangovers seem to
get worse as you age! So basically
if you’re drinking in your 40s and
you’re worried about your skin, you
should probably be waiting a day in
between drinks – or keep it to once
or twice a week.
STAY HYDRATED
We all know this one – alternate
between water and alcohol if you’re
going to drink. Alcohol is a toxin
with little nutrient value and can
contribute to poorer liver function,
reduced immunity, hormone
disruption, cell damage and insulin
issues – all impacting on the quality,
appearance and rate of ageing of
your skin.
Alcohol is also a diuretic, so you
can lose plenty of skin cell-loving
water from the body quite rapidly,
leaving your skin dehydrated and
dull. Drinking plenty of water while
you drink – and of course every
day – is a good way to maintain
some of the hydration that alcohol
is depleting.
CHOOSE LOW-
OR NO- ALCOHOL
OPTIONS
As society becomes increasingly
health conscious, the options for
those who want to minimise their
alcohol intake are increasing. And
the good news is you can still
actually have a wine without having
a drink. Clever winemakers are
creating alcohol-free versions of
your favourite wines, many of which
have far fewer calories than standard
wine. So instead of bemoaning
never drinking again to save your
skin, you can continue to drink wine
and keep your collagen! CBM
SUMMER
MAKEUP
TIPS
THE MAKEUP REFRESHER TO
LOOK GREAT ALL SUMMER LONG.
WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN.
This is our first full summer out
and about since the pandemic.
Many of us, myself included,
have almost forgotten how to create
a summer makeup look – we spent so
much time in masks so we didn’t bother!
I spoke with Gemma Rogers,
Estee Lauder National Education
Manager, for summer makeup tips to
help get us back on track.
WILL WE BE SEEING
MADE-UP GLAM OR
NATURAL, ALL-OVER GLOW
THIS SUMMER?
Makeup this summer will look clean,
natural and glowing to match the more
relaxed vibe of an Australian summer.
It’s low effort but high impact – think
smudgy eyeliner, flushed cheeks and
high shine lips. A lot of the sheer,
natural textures are easy to apply with
your fingers.
SHOULD WE BE FOCUSING
ON OUR LIPS MORE?
Lips are having a moment after being
hidden behind masks for so long. A
perfect summer shade is Estee Lauder
Pure Color Revitalizing Crystal Balm in
Sun Crystal. This has a 3 in one role:
lipstick, lip balm and blush.
SPEAKING OF, IS BLUSH A
THING THIS SUMMER?
Cheeks will be beautifully flushed and
bronzer will soften the face and give that
straight-from-the-beach vibe. And don’t
forget a gorgeous highlighter! Estee
Lauder Bronze Goddess Highlighting
Powder Gelee in Solar Crush is perfect
applied on the high points of the face
for extra glow.
CAN YOU GIVE A
COUPLE OF LIP AND EYE
MAKEUP TIPS?
For lips and eyes, a more lived-in
look is trending. There is no need
for a steady eyeliner hand, simply
draw a messy line and smudge up
and down. Estee Lauder Double
Wear 24H Waterproof Gel Eye Pencil
has a smudge tip at one end, which
makes it super easy to apply. Use this
to tightline the top eyelid to give
natural definition. Finish with mascara.
For the lips, use the fingers to pat
on as a stain. Concentrate the colour
in the centre of the lips and don’t
worry about lining the lips too
perfectly. CBM
BEAUTY
Glowy
&
natural
Dewy, luminous skin is on many a
Santa list this year. Looking natural
is key to creating a luminous glow,
but this can be harder to master
than it sounds! Creating dewy
skin is often best achieved with a
combination of products, such as
a serum or liquid illuminator mixed
into foundation.
Softly coloured cheeks are
fundamental to this flushed and
healthy look. The experts at
Ciate recommend the “alphabet
approach” to blush application:
a W shape across your nose to
give you a sun-kissed glow; an
O shape directly on the apples of
your cheeks to give an effortless
blush; and a C shape starting at
your brow and curving around your
eye to give you a natural flush of
colour that enhances the natural,
no-makeup look.
Opt for a nude lipstick with a
slight shine or a lip stain or gloss
with a hint of pink, peach or berry.

Festive
&
FUN
‘Tis the season to be merry and
bright, so why not extend the
sentiment to your makeup?
Perfectly chiselled features,
flawless skin and beyond-bold eyes
are the name of this game. From
intense and experimental makeup
colours and textures, to dramatically
long lashes and bright lips, a little
drama never hurt anyone!
Make your eyes pop with matte
or shimmer shadows, depending on
your mood and the occasion, adding
a bold flick of eyeliner along the
upper lash and a pair of false lashes.
Ardell has relaunched the Magnetic
Megahold false lash range – with an
undetectable magnetic lash band
that can be used with the brand’s
magnetic eyeliner. Genius!
Another way to rock the party look
is to add a punch of colour. Instead
of heavy eyeshadows, try adding a
vibrant lip shade – gloss or matte –
for an injection of pop. Pump your
cheek colour up using a brighter
shade and you’re good to go!
Complete your party-ready look
with a slick of colour on your nails.
From classic red to festive glittery
glosses, it’s an easy way to jazz up
any outfit or look.

Australia’s
COSMETIC
SURGERY
CRACKDOWN

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS,
MINIMUM HYGIENE
STANDARDS AND THE
USE OF THE TERM
“COSMETIC SURGEON”
ARE ALL ON THE
TABLE IN WHAT LOOKS
SET TO BECOME A
SWEEPING OVERHAUL OF
AUSTRALIA’S COSMETIC
SURGERY INDUSTRY.
The cosmetic surgery industry
is set to undergo significant
reform after a new report by the
Australian Health Practitioner Regulation
Agency (AHPRA) (the medical regulator)
and the Medical Board of Australia.
The independent review, released on 1
September 2022, was promptly initiated
after a joint investigation by Four Corners,
The Age and Sydney Morning Herald
into controversial cosmetic surgeons
uncovered serious hygiene and safety
breaches across various clinics.
The review found unsafe practices,
misleading advertising and a need for
minimum standards on qualifications.
Under proposed reforms cosmetic
practitioners could be banned from
using patient testimonials, face minimum
hygiene standards and be barred from
calling themselves surgeons if they are
not qualified.
HOW IS
cosmetic surgery
in Australia
currently
governed?
Current regulation of cosmetic surgery
is multifaceted, involving multiple state,
territory and national regulators. As
cosmetic surgery is not recognised as
a speciality in Australia, any medical
practitioner, whether or not trained
and competent in cosmetic surgery,
may legally call themselves a
‘cosmetic surgeon’.
The report notes that universal
minimum standards for education,
training and qualifications in cosmetic
surgery have been nonexistent in
Australia. Consequently, cosmetic
surgery is undertaken by doctors from
various backgrounds with varying levels
of training and competence, with a
spectrum of outcomes for patients.
‘In this environment, consumers are
largely left on their own when it comes
to selecting a practitioner to perform
cosmetic surgery, having to sift through
a plethora of advertising and marketing
material and try to make sense of
numerous qualifications, in an attempt
to identify a qualified and competent
practitioner,’ said former Queensland
health ombudsman Andrew Brown, who
led the inquiry.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 119

FEATURE
While the problem is easy to
identify and define, the solutions
are much more complex and
controversial. They are complex
because the Health Practitioner
Regulation National Law (the
National Law), governing AHPRA
and the Medical Board’s powers and
responsibilities, is based largely on
a title protection model (that is, it
seeks to regulate what practitioners
are allowed to call themselves)
and less on a model that directly
regulates scope of practice (that
is, what practitioners are allowed
to do).
The solutions are controversial
because they require navigating
some disputed territory that is at
the core of a very public battle
between groups representing
specialist surgeons (and in particular
those that have a plastic surgery
subspecialty) and those who are not
specialist surgeons.
Medical practitioners who do not
hold specialist registration, must not
‘hold themselves out’ as a registered
specialist or claim to be qualified to
practise in a recognised specialty.
Cosmetic surgery is not, however,
recognised as a medical specialty.
While the title ‘surgeon’ is part of
a number of protected specialist
titles (for example, ‘specialist
plastic surgeon’ and ‘specialist
orthopaedic surgeon’), there is no
standalone title ‘surgeon’ that is
protected by the National Law. As
a result, the title ‘cosmetic surgeon’
(which is a commonly used term
in the cosmetic surgery sector,
irrespective of the level of training
and qualifications of the practitioner)
is not a protected title.

KEY FINDINGS
from the review
In its Key Findings, the independent review declared bluntly that
it has ‘highlighted unsafe practice, misleading advertising and
substandard marketing across the cosmetic industry’.
AHPRA chief executive Martin Fletcher pledged to act
immediately, in partnership with the Medical Board of Australia.
‘I am appalled by the tragic stories of patients who were harmed
by doctors taking advantage of them – the situation is totally
unacceptable and must change,’ he said.
‘We want everyone who chooses to have cosmetic surgery
to be better informed and protected. We want doctors who
undertake cosmetic surgery to be trained to a safe standard.
We want the public to feel confident they are going to be well
looked after and, if things go wrong, that they will be supported
and that their concerns will be acted on.
‘We will use our legal powers in full to better protect
consumers who choose cosmetic surgery. Registered
practitioners in the industry can expect a relentless focus.’
PROPOSED NEW
CHANGES
to the industry
The review, which follows a six-month examination of the
regulation of the sector including through a public consultation,
makes 16 recommendations to improve patient safety in the
sector. AHRPRA and the Medical Board have accepted all
16 recommendations.
In a bid to improve patient safety, and address reports of
unhygienic surgical practises, the use of social media testimonials
and misleading before and after photos and unsafe surgical
procedures, the recommendations include:
• establishing an ‘endorsement’ model for cosmetic surgeons to
establish expectations about minimum qualifications
• a public education campaign to assist consumers to
understand an endorsement
• a confidential cosmetic surgery hotline
• a complaints committee
• revising Advertising Guidelines.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 121

FEATURE
As a result, AHPRA has set up
a targeted Cosmetic Surgery
Enforcement Unit to ‘accelerate
action and step-up enforcement’ as
well as a separate Cosmetic Surgery
Oversight Group.
In addition, AHPRA announced it
‘will enforce the ban on testimonials
in cosmetic surgery advertising as
they are likely to mislead, deceive
and trivialise the risks.’
AN ENDORSEMENT
MODEL
One of the most far-reaching
recommendations is the use of
an ‘endorsement’ process. An
endorsement would recognise
that a person has an extended
scope of practice in a particular
area because they have obtained
a specific qualification approved
by the Medical Board. The
training programs leading to
the qualification also must be
accredited by an independent
accreditation authority. Once
established, the report says it ‘will
be easy for consumers to identify
whether a practitioner is qualified
to perform cosmetic surgery’ (as the
endorsement will be listed on the
AHPRA public register).
A public education program
about endorsement will also be
necessary; the report notes this
is a much simpler message to
communicate than the current
‘unacceptable situation’.
The review emphasised that
cosmetic surgery, like any other form
of surgery, is invasive and carries
risks. It should only be performed
by highly trained practitioners. The
standards set for an education and
training program by the Medical
Board, in consultation with the AMC,
will have to be very high.
‘Only rigorous and robust
programs that appropriately train
practitioners in the necessary
aspects of surgery should be
accredited,’ the report said.
SOCIAL MEDIA
TESTIMONIALS &
COSMETIC SURGERY
ADVERTISING
The review was concerned
with tactics employed by some
practitioners, particularly on social
media, including using images of
models who are unlikely to have
had cosmetic surgery, to promote
a particular surgical procedure,
content that actively encourages
people to pursue what is promoted
as a socially accepted or perfect
body type and the use of influencers
to promote procedures.
To safeguard against some of the
concerning impacts of cosmetic
surgery advertising, the review
recommended:
• that stronger enforcement action
be taken about high-risk matters;
• an industry-specific audit be
undertaken to inform future
proactive auditing of such
advertising, including using
technology to assist with this;
• that AHPRA and the Medical
Board revise its Advertising
Guidelines and/or produce
additional material specifically
about cosmetic surgery to clarify
the standards expected of
practitioners.

Aussie docs say
TIME TO ACT IS NOW
Australian doctors have called on health ministers across the
country to quickly detail and act on the proposed changes to the
cosmetic surgery sector.
Health Minister Mark Butler has announced that the law will be
amended to ensure anyone performing a cosmetic procedure is
properly qualified, with the proposed changes focusing on who
can call themselves a surgeon and ensuring procedures are carried
out in safe, hygienic and accredited facilities.
Health Ministers agreed to implement the following reforms:
• Preventing medical practitioners who are not qualified
describing themselves as cosmetic ‘surgeons’
• Ensuring anyone conducting a cosmetic procedure has
appropriate qualifications
• Limiting surgery to properly accredited facilities with minimum
hygiene and safety standards
• Banning doctors using patient testimonials for cosmetic surgery
including on social media
• Better information for patients on the risks and their rights so
they can make an informed decision about any treatment.
The title of ‘cosmetic surgeon’, and who can use it, is still a hotly
contested issue, with differing opinions on what qualifications
guarantee safe care. It is still currently under consideration by the
Ministerial Council and is an issue we’re following closely. CBM
MAKEUP ARTIST AND
OPI BRAND PARTNER
MIKELE SIMONE TALKS
MANICURES AND THE
POPULAR SHADES WE CAN
EXPECT TO SEE THIS SUMMER.
Gender-fluid fashion is changing the way we
represent ourselves, allowing our authentic
selves to shine, to be bold and beautiful in
all our uniqueness and to smash stereotypes. And
nowhere are we seeing this more than on the digits of
males in 2022. From celebrities including Harry Styles,
Travis Barker and Machine Gun Kelly sporting fresh
manis and coloured nails, there’s no doubt that men’s
nail polish has taken off. And we’re here for it.
‘Men wearing nail polish has been around from
ancient history all the way through to the 80s punk
scene, but the trend has hit mainstream, with big pop
stars and celebrities adorning their nails in shades that
reflect their red carpet outfit or everyday look,’ says
industry expert Mikele Simone. ‘As another form of
self-expression, nail polish on men has become quite
the norm, especially as gender expression and gender
fluidity has become more accepted. So many male
celebrities like Harry Styles and Machine Gun Kelly
have now also launched their own nail shades.’

BEST SHADES FOR MEN’S
MANICURES
Depending on how daring one can be, any shade
is the best shade. Men are wearing darker and
more masculine shades like navy, black and
grey to give off a more cool and stylish vibe, but
we’re also seeing men wear brighter shades of
yellow, pink and green, which easily translates
into a more fun and daring approach. Using a
matte top coat can easily make it look more
masculine as it removes that polished feel and
it’s also a different look.
HOW TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT
NAIL LOOK?
Ensuring your nails are nicely manicured and
cuticles are pushed back is the basic first step
for any perfect nail look. Guys can also have fun
with some show stopping nail art, like simple line
designs or even sporting a nod to your favourite
sports team! I think it’s best to have fun and do
what you want. At the end of the day, it’s fun to
accessorise an outfit with nail polish and you can
change the colour anytime.
WHAT COLOURS WILL BE HOT
THIS SPRING/SUMMER?
I think as everyone is becoming more daring
and excited about self-expression this spring/
summer, we will see males pushing the
boundaries and opting for brighter shades like
baby blue, pink and metallics. CBM
1In the summer we punish our hair, exposoing
it to sun, chlorine and salty sea water, all of
which are abrasive on the hair. Protective and
hydrating hair products are essential. As they say,
prevention is better than cure!
2Curly hair is more affected because its
biological makeup starts off less hydrated than
straight hair. Moisture-enhancing products
like Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Enhancer and
Nutriplenish Curl Gelee, as well as masks and daily
protection, are a must for curly hair. And remember,
curly hair needs less shampooing than straight hair.
3Step up your treatment regime, especially if you
colour your hair. Blondes can try Aveda Blonde
Strengthening Mask in light and deep work on
all hair types as well as coloured hair. Using masks
every third wash or so will help prolong visits to the
hairdresser for re-colouring. If you are swimming
regularly or in the sun daily use a mask at least twice
a week. You can even leave it on overnight if your
hair feels particularly dry.
4Always wash hair your after swimming. The
Aveda Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser is a
HACKS TO
SLOW DOWN
THE AGEING
PROCESS
BOOK EXCERPT FROM
‘TO AGE OR NOT TO AGE:
STRATEGIES AND LIFE
HACKS TO TURN BACK THE
CLOCK’ BY ANTI-AGEING
EXPERT LYNDAL LINKIN.
You no longer have to age the way
your parents or grandparents did.
You can age on your own terms,
starting now. In our crazy, busy world, the
struggle to look after yourself is real, let
alone decipher what you really can do
that will actually make a difference to the
way you age.
As women, the expectations are high
and we are constantly bombarded with
messages that we need to be all things
to all people, including ourselves. We
need to raise children who are healthy,
well educated, kept off computer games
and social media but entertained with
wholesome play. Add to that maintaining
a home, keeping on top of the bills and
activities, and maintaining friendships and
family relationships. Plus, we need to look
great, exercise, sleep well and possibly
even manifest our dreams and create
incredible careers. PHEW, it is a lot!
So how do you become more vibrant
and youthful without adding complicated
routines into your already busy day? It’s
about knowing what simple things you
can do and understanding the importance
of consistency.
Small, seemingly insignificant steps
taken over time can create a radical
difference. You don’t have to be the
smartest, fastest or the strongest – you
have to be the most consistent. Let’s take
a look at 5 anti-ageing hacks:

1. Happiness: Understanding this
emotional state is one of the most
significant measures for longevity and it
is very empowering to know that we can
work on our own happiness.
Happiness has become a scientific field
of research, with evidence indicating that
happy people are healthier, have a better
immune function, better mental health and
have less heart disease. Happier people
can even live up to 10 years longer.
We have a certain baseline of
happiness and we can raise this with
long-term strategies rather than the
instant gratifications we usually look for.
Learning these tools is highly important
when slowing the ageing process.
These include: not comparing ourselves
to others; learning that we can only
be happy in the present; letting go of
resentment; practicing kindness; being
grateful; and avoiding perfectionism.
2. Fasting: Giving your body a rest from
having to process what you are putting
into it can yield extraordinary results.
You can choose to fast for a day, or to
restrict the time that you eat in any one
day. For example, you may choose to
eat only between 11am and 7pm. Going
into a fasting state not only helps you
lose weight but can propel your genes
to function better in repairing the body.
It can even increase levels of Human
Growth Hormone and delay ageing.
Practicing this a couple of times a week
consistently can achieve amazing results
over time.
3. Meditation: Our mind is our most
precious and valuable resource and we
use it to experience every single moment
of our lives. We depend on our mind
to be focused and perform at our best
and meditation is a way to take care of
it. This can be done in a as little as 15
minutes a day. Consistency is key. Over
time, meditation can reduce blood
pressure, stress and anxiety, improve
sleep, boost the immune system
and slow the ageing process. It is an
extremely powerful anti-ageing hack.
4. Strength training: This is the
biggest physical anti-ageing hack
you can make and you don’t have to
spend long, hard hours in the gym – 30
minutes twice a week will do it. Not only
does this help make you look great but
it helps reverse the ageing process at a
cellular level, increasing the production
of collagen and the anti-ageing
hormones oxytocin and progesterone.
5. Sunscreen and the ingredients in
your skincare: There is no question
that maintaining a consistent skincare
routine promotes smooth, radiant skin.
You just need to be aware of the active
ingredients in the products you are
using. The most important are Vitamins
A B and C. Peptides are also important
to support collagen production. And, of
course, prevention using sunscreen on
your face and body daily is a major hack
in the war against ageing.
The majority of the above hacks
don’t require you to find more time
in your day; they are just a change in
how you do things. A mindset change.
If you were to make these five changes
to your life right now, you could be a
different person in 12 months’ time.
Whatever you do, make sure you tell
yourself every day that you matter and
that you are worth it and start with one
simple step. CBM
