‘Garden to plate’ community
project ready for handover
A NEW garden in St Albans will
be handed to the community to
care for and enjoy at a celebration
event tomorrow.
Mairehau Community
Garden was designed with the
community, led by The Green
Lab and Neighbourhood Trust
with “a garden to plate” vision
driving the design.
Said NHT community
development worker Don
Benn: “This garden is a place
for connection, for building
relationships with others in
the community, for gaining
skills in gardening, in cooking
in season, and in preserving and
bottling food, when we have
excess.”
The garden will feature a
polytunnel, covered seating
area, raised beds, composting
station and pollinator-friendly
planting.
Artists Storm and Cara Waiwai
also created a mural for the onsite
container.
A donation of $10,000 from
Hummingbird Coffee was used
to help assist with labour costs,
buying plants, and installing a
mains water supply.
Construction works started
in May after the final plan was
signed off by the Community
Steering Committee and the
Neighbourhood Trust in late
March this year.
Many volunteers were involved
in the building process, with
one working bee saw 18m3 of fill
moved in less than two hours by
a group of 17.
The Green Lab build lead Tom
Phillpotts said he did not expect
to get the works done so fast.

Library will be the first stop of
‘The Repair Roadshow’, which
is a year-long project to help
community hubs around the city
set up their own repair event.
Ōtautahi Repair Revolution
founder Zac Imhoof said the
idea was prompted after a
conversation with Michael
Reynolds, a Woolston resident
who is behind the community
space Roimata Food Commons
in Radley Park.
Said Imhoof: “This event will
be the first and hopefully we
can gather enough volunteers
from the area that would like to
maintain it.”
He encouraged residents to
hold onto broken belongings
and bring them to the event, no
matter how odd they were.
Imhoof said volunteers have
fixed many things, including
toys, electronic gadgets, and
anything that has a battery or a
plug.
He still remembers the time
he received a $10 donation after
fixing a ukelele for a five-yearold
girl at a repair cafe.
“There was a big smile on
her face. So it was something
very special to myself and
other volunteers who have had
situations like that all the time,”
Imhoof said.
“Whether you’re a volunteer
or guest, it’s the interaction that
makes events like this special.”
Imhoof started the Ōtautahi
Repair Revolution last year, with
a goal of creating a world where
people do not buy or throw their
belongings away unconsciously.
The first event started as
a trial before becoming a
monthly session at Richmond
Community Garden. Since then,
it has had a large database of
volunteers with different levels of
experience.
But, Imhoof said more
volunteers are always needed.
They are also prompted to bring
their own project to repairing
sessions.
“It’s basically an event to bring
people together to repair. We do
ask for donations if people can,
otherwise we get funding from
the city council.”

The Green Lab director Khye
Hitchcock said the feedback was
clear at the outset.
“The community wanted a
welcoming space that would
provide hands-on learning
experiences.
“There are definitely some
experienced gardeners in the
community who wish to share
their skills with others, which
is wonderful. The final design
reflects this. The polytunnel will
allow for year-round activities.
We’re hoping lots of different
groups can come and learn about
growing kai here.”
The project also received
support from a number of
community-minded partners,
including the city council,
Hummingbird Coffee, Richmond
Community Garden, and
Canterbury Community Gardens
Association.
Police station set to reopen

THE HORNBY Police Station is
set to reopen, just not as soon as
expected.
Residents will have to wait until
late November for the precinct
to reopen, after it was temporarily
closed in February.
In August, the Greater Hornby
Residents Association was told
the station had closed because a
previous front desk staff member
had been transferred to Rolleston
and the replacement, who had
been trained up, had decided to
leave.
A closed “until further notice”
sign hung on the station door,
telling people to call ahead in
case of “unforseen closures”
and directing them to go to
the central station 16 minutes
away.
Sergeant Logan Straton, in his
reply to the GHRA, said a second
recruitment drive closed in
August and the aim was to have
the station open in eight weeks,
which would have been about
October 17.
A police spokesperson told
Western News the public counter
where people can actively enter
the building and make a written
complaint or statement will be
open 9am-4pm from late November,
and will be manned by a
constable at the desk.
At the moment, staff are working
from the station regularly,
but they are not front
counter staff.
“They handle serious
crashes, (SCU) highway
patrol work, youth aid
services, to name a few,
and work in the community
or out on the roads
during some of their
shifts but they are there
to assist that constable in
an emergency if need be,” they
said.
There is still a team of frontline

that they were relieved
the station was opening
and it was “about time.”
“I haven’t experienced it personally,
but I think there’s a perception

He noted the station reopening
gave the community an
opportunity to report criminal
activity locally, as there was a
worry in the past that people
would not travel into town to
report crime.
“I think it will give us more
accurate figures on the crime in
our area, that people know the
police station’s open in our area
and they’ve got somewhere to
report a lot more conveniently.”

Zonta sports awards winners announced
THE 31ST Zonta sports awards
event, organised by the Zonta
Club of Christchurch South, was
held last Thursday at the Hornby
Working Men’s Club.
It was a very inspirational
night with 314 attendees. Nine

together with a number of highly
commended certificates awarded
as the standard was so high.
Tessa Morrison, a member of
the inaugural Tauihi Basketball
League, spoke of her life journey

Stir-fry is a go-to for planning meals
Chicken chowmein
can be prepared in
many different ways,
this recipe for two is
quick and easy
2-3 minutes, until syrupy. Add
the spinach or bok choy and the
reserved vegetables. Stir-fry for 1
minute. Great served with rice.
Steamed fish with ginger
and hoisin sauce
Chicken chowmein
Serves 2
Ingredients
Noodles:
200-250g dried egg noodles
1 tbsp sesame oil
Marinade:
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tsp each: light soy sauce,
Shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
Stir-fry:
200g skinned and boned chicken
breasts
2 tbsp rice bran oil
1 tbsp chopped garlic
50g-100g green and red capsicums
50g ham, julienned
2 tsp each: light soy sauce, dark
soy sauce
1 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or dry
sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
½ tsp sugar
3 tbsp finely sliced spring onions
or chives
1-2 tbsp sesame oil
Directions
Cook the noodles in a large pan
of boiling water until tender,
about 5 minutes. Drain well then
toss together with the sesame oil.
Meanwhile, combine the ingredients
for the marinade in a bowl.
Cut the chicken into chunks.
Place in the bowl and marinate
for at least 10 minutes.
Heat a wok on high. Add 1 tbsp
of rice bran oil. When hot, drain
the chicken and stir-fry in batches
until cooked, about 2 minutes.
Remove and place aside. Wipe the
wok clean.
Heat the remaining rice bran
oil. Stir-fry the garlic for 10
seconds. Add the capsicums and
the ham.
Stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the
noodles, soy sauces, rice wine,
salt, pepper, sugar and spring
onions or chives. Stir-fry for 2
minutes.
Return the chicken and any
juices to the wok. Stir-fry for
about 3 minutes, until cooked and
hot. Add the sesame oil to taste.
Great served topped with
toasted cashew nuts.
Sticky pork with
vegetables
Serves 4
Ingredients
500g lean pork
1 tbsp sesame oil
3 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp each: Chinese five-spice
powder, finely grated root
ginger
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3 tbsp honey
2 tbsp rice bran oil
1 red pepper (capsicum), thinly
sliced
1 cup peas
2 cups finely sliced spinach or
bok choy
Directions
Thinly slice the pork into strips.
Combine the sesame oil, soy
sauce, five-spice powder, root
ginger, garlic and honey in a
bowl. Add the pork and mix
well. Marinate for at least 10
minutes.
Heat half the rice bran oil in
a wok on medium. Stir-fry the
red pepper and peas for 1-2
minutes, until crisp-tender. Place
aside.
Drain the pork reserving the
marinade. Stir-fry the pork in
batches in the remaining oil until
almost cooked.
Add the marinade and stir for

Cut the fish into serving-sized
pieces. Brush with the hoisin
sauce. Line a large steamer with
banana leaves.
If the leaves are not available,
use oiled baking paper. Add the
fish in a single layer. Dot with the
hoisin sauce.
Sprinkle with the remaining
ingredients. Cover and steam
over simmering water for about 5
minutes, until cooked.
Serve immediately, topped with
sesame seeds, if preferred.

the Christchurch market?
I feel the market remains steady
which is backed up by the latest
REINZ stats just out that yes,
the market has cooled slightly
but certainly not crashed as
the media would portray. The
medium sale price in Christchurch
is $685,000 which is an increase
of 4.42% on last month! A total
of 439 properties were sold in
Christchurch last month and
medium days on market is still
steady at 35 days!
2. Your top 3 tips for preparing
your home for sale with
maximum impact?
Presentation is the key
• Declutter as much as you
possibly can - ask your friends
or family if you can store some
things in their garage.
• A fresh coat of paint works
wonders - keep it neutral.
• A good garden tidy - the
outdoors are just as important
as the inside for presentation.
3. Is there a right time of year to
go to market?
There are always buyers looking
to purchase a home, regardless of
the time of the year, traditionally
spring and summer are always
popular with warmer weather
and gardens are at their best,
however there is often more
competition with more options
for buyers to choose from. In the
winter months there is far less
competition and consequently
some home owners often achieve
premium prices.
