Push to lower speed 

limit outside college

THE SPEED limit of a busy road 

in Linwood could be lowered to 

improve safety. 

Te Aratai College principal 

Dick Edmundson has been 

approached by parents and students 

throughout the year about 

concerns of excessive speed on 

Aldwins Rd. 

Edmundson said it is not ideal 

to have a 60km/h zone outside of a 

school because the median speed 

could well be higher than the 

speed limit. 

But the speed limit could now 

be reduced to 30km/h during 

school hours as part of the city 

council’s Slow Speeds Neighbourhood 

programme. 

Residents are encouraged to 

share their views on the planned 

changes which would see speed 

limits reduce from 50km/h to 

40 and 30km/h on selected 

streets. 

Said Edmundson: “There’s 

always been people driving fast 

along Aldwins Rd whether it’s 

50km/h or 60km/h. All through 

the day because it’s such a busy 

road,” Edmundson said. 

While the speeding issue has 

been here “forever,” he thinks 

the increase of the speed limit to 

60km/h has led to a rise in the 

median speed. 

There have been near misses 

outside the school caused by a 

number of factors, but Edmundson 

said speed increases the risk. 

“The single greatest fear 

that any principal has is that 

something will happen to the 

students. It’s greater than NCEA 

passes, it’s greater than how the 

school musical is going to go.” 

The public consultation for the 

programme is open until January 

3.

New walking tracks at stormwater basin 

PEOPLE WILL be able to enjoy 

4km of new walking track when 

the city council’s award-winning 

stormwater basin in Hoon Hay 

opens to the public tomorrow. 

The stormwater basin is part 

of a 109ha network of basins and 

wetlands that the city council 

has been working on in the upper 

catchment of the Heathcote 

River. The facility as a whole 

has been named Te Kuru and 

includes the Eastman Wetlands. 

The city council is investing 

more than $50 million in the 

project and last month picked up 

a national award for it.

It will eventually link to

collectively be able to store more 

than one million cubic metres

reducing the risk of flooding 

downstream. 

In total, the area will provide 

around 14km of walking tracks,

600,000 native plants are going 

in the ground as part of the 

revegetation effort. 

“Improving our floodplain 

and stormwater management 

was obviously the catalyst for 

this project but a lot of effort has 

gone into ensuring this area also 

delivers long-term ecological and 

recreational benefits for the city,’’ 

Beaumont said. 

“When the stormwater basins 

aren’t being used to store floodwater, 

we want people to be able 

to enjoy this area and for it to 

be habitat for birds and other 

wildlife, including lizards. 

“Friday’s opening of Te Kuru is 

a taste of what is in store for the 

rest of this area. When the other 

stormwater basins are completed, 

this entire area will become a 

recreational and ecological asset 

for the city.” 

The name Te Kuru ‘the blow 

with the fist’ was recommended 

to the city council by Ngāi 

Tūāhuriri. Mana whenua have 

historically used it to reference 

the area.

Pupils make good use of new sheds 

ADDINGTON TE Kura 

Taumatua School pupils and 

staff have been surprised with 

generous gifts. 

The school has received two 

sheds for storing gardening 

equipment and pupils’ wheels. 

Teacher Lyn Petch said the 

sheds from PlaceMakers could 

not have arrived at a better 

time. 

Many students have been 

riding their bikes, skateboards 

and scooters around the field 

since the playground makeover 

was completed in May. But 

it became a problem because 

there was no available storage 

space. 

An additional 15 secondhand 

skateboards, bikes and 

scooters were also donated 

by families to the school for 

pupils who do not have their 

own. 

“Keeping them in the office 

was not ideal, but fortunately 

they fit perfectly into one of 

the new sheds,” Petch said. 

Gardening tools for the 

school’s dedicated community 

group that built the raised 

garden area and its Green 

Thumbs team will be stored in 

the other shed. 

The team consists of 15 

pupils who work every Friday 

lunchtime to maintain the native 

and floral gardens.

THE 31ST Zonta sports awards 

event, organised by the Zonta 

Club of Christchurch South, 

was held recently at the Hornby 

Working Men’s Club. 

It was a very inspirational 

night with 314 attendees. Nine

together with a number of highly

as the standard was so high. 

Tessa Morrison, a member of

He’s truly a stunner – confident, playful, so 

sweet yet mischievious. He’s well and truly 

firmly found his place in our home and the 

other pets adore him. 

Recently he got 

into a little bit 

of trouble, and 

chewed up some 

of my hair from 

the shower. I 

was away visiting 

our son Dylan in 

Houston and he 

must have missed 

me so much. He 

started with a few 

vomits, then had a 

day of being back 

to his sprinting pace, 

gobbling up his 

food and then another 

major vomit directly in 

front of Steve. 

Steve bundled him 

up and took him to 

work. The joys of 

having vets as parents. 

Initial blood testing 

and radiographs of 

his abdomen were 

normal, so Steve 

placed him on 

intravenous fluids and 

gave him medication to prevent vomiting. 

When he continued vomiting we asked 

Richard Lucy to ultrasound his abdomen, 

which proved highly suspicious for a linear 

foreign body, stretching right through his 

small intestines, causing the bowel to bunch 

into a ball, which could have proven fatal. 

Lynne our surgeon was on hand to swiftly 

take the wee guy to surgery. He was a star 

under anaesthetic and Steve could almost 

catheterize him on his own. He was so 

gentle and well behaved with needles. 

Lynne removed from his small intestines a 

wad of my hair and he’d also chewed part of 

a kitchen scour scrubber!!! He was sutured up 

and within an hour he was up walking around 

, ready for his next adventure. 

He’s an absolute delight but he’s going to 

keep us all busy, picking up any potential 

object lying around the house we think he 

might grab at.
