Bauma – Construction
Machinery Show 2022
Bauma, the world’s largest exhibition of mining and construction
equipment, held in Munich every three years, isn’t particularly recovery
related one might think - think again!

Although the vast halls and outdoor areas
boast some of the largest construction
equipment known to man from all the
leading manufacturers Caterpillar, Komatsu,
Hitachi, Liehberr and many others, it also
features startup companies offering unique
and diverse products to support these
industries. Some 3,500 odd exhibitors from
62 Countries attracting over 600,000 visitors
over seven days in October.
In amongst all these exhibitors are countless
products and services that directly relate
to the recovery industry. Cable, hydraulic,
electronic, engine, trailer, cranes, lifting,
winching and rigging etc. In fact, the whole
show is just jaw droppingly impressive! I don’t
honestly think even if you attend all seven days
you’d see it all. The crossover to our industry
is very evident particularly when perusing the
trailer and transport section of Bauma. All the
usual manufacturers are present with all their
product line ups, Faymonville, Nooteboom,
Goldhoffer and Broshuis to name but a
few. Rarely would you be able to directly
compare one manufacturer to another
in such close proximity. Similarly the lorry
mounted crane section is equally impressive.
In short Bauma is the one stop shop!
Definitely worth the 12 hour drive and has a
place in the 2025 diary.

informative update on smart
motorways. Here she gives us
a quick recap.

Introduction:
It is now more than two years since the Transport Secretary
published the Smart Motorway Stocktake and Action Plan, which set
out the Government’s 18-point action plan to further improve safety
on smart motorways. The stocktake challenged National Highways
to deliver a series of actions designed to improve safety and boost
drivers’ confidence on these roads.
We are determined to do all we can to help drivers feel safe and
be even safer on all our roads and so we’ve have been working
closely with the Department for Transport to deliver the actions
from the stocktake..
In summer 2022 we published our second year progress report,
which set out our progress in delivering the 2020 Action Plan.
Delivery of actions:
Over the past year our delivery has included:
l Completing the roll-out of Stopped Vehicle Detection (SVD) on
more than 200 miles of ALR motorway
l Installing more than 700 additional emergency area signs so
drivers will almost always be able to see a sign informing them of the
distance to the next place to stop in an emergency
l Completing the upgrade of all enforcement cameras to enable
with the technology necessary to enable police to enforce Red X
signals, to help improve compliance
l Introducing the automatic display of ‘report of obstruction’
messages on electronic overhead signs across 13 motorway sections
l Providing more information to drivers – including consulting on
changes to, and enabling the publication of, an updated Highway
Code.
We had already made emergency areas orange so they’re more
visible to drivers, launched our biggest ever road safety campaign to
give drivers clear advice about what to do if they break down, and
made location information for all smart motorway emergency areas
available to sat nav providers.
We will continue to work hard to make our roads as safe as they
possibly can be and to further increase driver confidence in the
motorway network.

roads. We have a strategic ambition that nobody should be harmed
when using or working on the strategic road network and England has

Our second year progress report set out the latest safety data
about smart motorways.
Compared to other roads, motorways are the safest to travel
on, and the latest data shows that, overall, in terms of serious or
fatal casualties, smart motorways are our safest roads.
We are continuing our work to make them our safest roads in
every way. There is always scope for further improvement and we
are determined to reduce the number of incidents, and injuries,
on our roads.
Working with the recovery industry.
We continue to work closely with the recovery industry and have
agreed joint working protocols in place between vehicle recovery
operators and traffic officers that were developed in collaboration
with the industry. Perhaps the most important piece of this advice
is that you as a vehicle recovery operator are never expected to
work in a live lane on a motorway and we at National Highways
have procedures in place to make sure you never have to do so.
We will support you by setting signs and signals to improve your
safety, and allocating traffic officers or calling on police resource if
required to ensure your safety and that you never have to attempt
to recover a vehicle in a live lane.
We have produced guidance, which has been reviewed by
leading industry representatives, and we’re confident that the
advice it contains provides you with better information to carry
out your duties more safely on our network.

The
recovery
industry is
not exempt
A regular topic within the recovery industry
is the interpretation of the exemptions
to the road transport regulations under
special types for recovery vehicles.

For a recovery vehicle to be recognised as a “recovery
vehicle” the first condition is that the vehicle is specially
designed and constructed for the purpose of recovering
disabled road vehicles or is permanently adapted for that purpose.
The second condition is that the vehicle is fitted with a crane,
winch or other lifting system specially designed to be used for
the purpose of recovering another vehicle. The third condition is
that the vehicle meets the requirements for registered use as a
recovery vehicle under Part 5 of Schedule 1 to the Vehicle Excise
and Registration Act 1994(1), and so it goes on.
Providing you meet these basic definitions, then in certain
circumstances, and its complicated, as many of you are aware, you
can operate using a number of exemptions.
Yes, this edit is about sustainability and environmental
challenges, my point is nowhere does it list any exemption from
any environmental responsibilities, in fact several industry groups,
namely ERRI, PROF and LARO, have challenged this with TFL by
producing an impact assessment for the clean air zones and
the financial effect it would have on the recovery industry, a
reasonable opportunity to depreciate the asset over a fair period
of time, and not just because!
Those industry groups put together a 10 page detailed
document, fighting for a scale of discounts that would act as
a ‘sunset clause’ to allow the industry to continue to function
and upgrade to more compliant vehicles in an orderly manner.
Denied any consideration, the independent operators, at some
considerable cost to their businesses, have just got on with their
own upgrade, slowly moving away from those older Euro numbers
and replacing with Euro-6.
As I have said on numerous occasions these challenges generally
manifest in London and slowly gathers momentum and starts
affecting other towns and cities.
The UK’s first Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) broke the mould and
came from outside of London. It was launched back in February
this year in Oxford piloting several designated streets. The ZEZ pilot
operates from 7am - 7pm, all year around. All petrol and diesel
vehicles, including hybrids, will incur a daily charge unless eligible
for a discount or exemption. (An application can be made for an
exemption for certain recovery vehicles), dare I say a recovery
specific license would easily cater for an exemption to any ZEZ and
would keep out those who mascarade as recovery without making
the right investment.

However, zero emission vehicles,
such as electric cars, can enter the
pilot area free of charge.
The next area of enforcement just on the horizon is Bristol,
where commercial vehicle operators delivering to Bristol will be
fined £100 per day for entering the new clean air zone in the city if
their vehicles are not Euro-6 compliant. The charging zone is being
enforced from 28 November 2022.
The Bristol clean air zone will cover the city centre and out to
Spike Island. It will be in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,
but there will only be one fee for accessing the zone in each 24-
hour period. If you run older trucks seven days a week into Bristol,
the new CAZ may cost you £36,500 per truck per year. APNR
cameras will enforce the zone by recording all vehicle movements
in and out of the region.
Scotland are not free from further introduction of clean air
zones, reported at clean air roadshow held at the Murrayfield
Stadium on the 18th October 2022, attendees were told
enforcement of the newly introduced clean air zones will
commence in Glasgow from June 2023, with Edinburgh starting to
enforce its CAZ in June 2024
The new clean air regulation mean trucks have to be Euro-6
compliant to enter the zones (typically a tight one-square mile area
in the city centre) and with the exception of a small number of
exemptions non-compliant vehicles will be issued with a penalty
charge notice of £60 for a first time offence, increasing up to £960
per vehicle for repeat offenders, this system is different to others
around the UK, there is no option to pay to enter the zones, be
compliant or receive a penalty charge.
Should you consider your recovery vehicle to be exempt, then
apply to the Local Exemption Advisory Panel (LEZ-LEAP) they will
meet as required to consider requests on a case-by-case basis.
None of these Clean Air Zones are new news, we have all known
that they are coming for many years. We fought hard with TFL for
that sunset period, but to no avail. What is next you might ask,
again this is nothing new, but the UK Government has already
outlined its plans that all new cars and vans will be full zeroemission
at the tailpipe by 2035.
While for trucks the Government has set the deadline of 2035,
this is for trucks at or below 26 tonne GVW and by 2040 for all
HGVs to be zero emission. Currently there is no expectation that
diesel trucks will be banned outright, and it will still be possible to
drive, and trade used trucks in the UK (and cars and vans for that
matter), although this is all part of a grand plan to shift to a fully
zero emission vehicle by 2050.
Not only is the recovery industry an essential service, proven
through the pandemic, but it is also specialist in every way. Its
vehicle fleet cannot be counted within an umbrella of “trucks at or

below 26 tonne GVW”, we are specialist in every definition of the
word, and have to fight for an “exceptional operator status”.
As much as anyone wants to conform to special environmental
measures to reduce our carbon footprint, we have to be practical
and those government officials need to understand our industry
and understand that just because some truck manufactures have
a solution for the logistics industry, they currently have no feasible
solution for the recovery industry.
Just as I started this edit, outlining how the recovery industry is
by its own definition is “special types” it has to be treated under
“special measures” until we have a suitable alternatively fueled
vehicle, perhaps hydrogen cell, designed to power a recovery
vehicle within a real-world situation, we have to be listened to.
Aside from the carbon footprint of a recovery vehicle, our
industry has a responsibility to review its actions and to drive
change to address economic, social, and environmental challenges
it faces. It needs to look at how many light bulbs it burns every
night and to find a way to reduce its energy consumption.
LARO put forward a suggestion during the height of COVID,
reduce the wasted night time manpower and combine resources, it
may well have been a solution to aide COVID and help with staffing
shortages by sharing control facilities and in some cases roadside
resources, but it was a sensible and workable solution, and
something that would help reduce the industry’s carbon footprint
and help in tackling climate change.
Many of you readers will know I’ve been in the recovery industry
for over 40 years, for as long as I can remember we have all tried to
avoid the empty “return” load situation, or to “buy the backload”,
still now you see more recovery vehicles running empty rather
than loaded, this has always been an issue for cost reasons. Jason
Brice of CMG won’t mind me saying, in fact he might call me
and thank me for the free advert, as the CMG backload portal
definitely helps. The CMG team can boast just under 1,000 jobs a
month dealt with by their network of 423 agents registered to his
backload portal.
A return load has always been about
saving or making money, of course,
but the point I’m raising today is the
environmental saving those 12,000
backloads, and multicar movements
will count heavily against the
recovery industry’s carbon footprint.

Another big environmental saving that will further reduce the
road miles recovered is to repair rather than recover, what did
the RAC call it back in the 1990’s “Go not Tow” ouch that was the
start of the free miles, sorry to remind you of that one.
The Paris agreement on climate change proclaims that there is
no alternative solution for companies other than to decarbonize
their portfolio and become net zero businesses. As an industry
we should all be working towards these same goals, and heavily
advertising it.
Once more the recovery industry must step back and look at
itself and stop looking for the ways to avoid doing what is right.
What I mean by that, every time the recovery industry is faced
with a legislative change, its first reaction is to find ways to avoid
it, find a design that avoids compliance, or add it to the list of
exemptions.
With that comment in mind, the exemption list is closed,
enough time has passed for most of the recovery vehicles
operated within the UK to have moved to the most
environmentally friendly power trains, Euro-6, after all the first
Euro-6 vehicles came to market back in 2010 and hit the UK
market in 2012, that 10-year period has almost exhausted the
sunset period asked for with TFL.
Why do I say most and not all, with the huge cost to replace
the most complex of heavy underlifts and cranes, it’s only fair the
owners are given sufficient time to sensibly depreciate their asset.
As individual companies I’m sure you will have your own
environmental policies, as an industry we should have the same.
A set of environmental goals we should all be striving to achieve.
Aim to reduce mileage recovered, encourage short term storage
to enable multiple vehicle movements, by 2 car, 3 and 4 car
movements. Have a series of delivery hubs for multi car moves
and only do single car moves for the “final mile”.
Combine out of hours control/contact facilities to vastly reduce
the unnecessary manning of hundreds of 24-hour control rooms
- if you think about it, the whole concept is crazy.
Plus, all those considerations that go without saying – selecting
the right vehicle for the job, sending the right vehicle first time,
fuel efficient driving.
We all recognise our duty of care regarding health & safety,
well the time is now for us to have the same responsibility for our
environmental and sustainability commitments so that there can
be a 23rd century for our grandchildren and beyond.

Often, we are our own architects of that contempt, however in our quest for red lights, public safety
and high standards we have been the standard bearers in providing safety and a professional road
rescue and recovery service. In the words of former Transport Minister Grant Shapps, we are the
fourth emergency service.

We are the essential service that clears the
highways and byways of this United Kingdom. We
keep the roads clear for the emergency services,
freight transport delivering essential goods and provisions
vital to this country’s economy its hospitals and its fuel
stations.
It’s been said by me and others many times over,
without the investment, the training, the skills and the
bravery of the rescue and recovery industry, the UK would
just grind to a halt!
Just like the public services employees, the nurses,
public transport workers, all hailed as hero’s during the
pandemic, the recovery industry delivered a service, but
apparently, hero’s we are not!
The customer expectation lumped upon our rescue
services exceeds that of the NHS and other public services
that are currently about to strike.
The old and the chronically sick have been often
abandoned or left in chronic pain for months on end.
Cancer patients have been left waiting for diagnosis, pain
relief and in some instances chemotherapy. Yet the public
struggle to wait a couple of hours for a recovery truck
that is stuck in the government created gridlocks we face
nationally on a daily basis on our way to rescue them.
During the pandemic, VRO’s risked their lives moving
people in their vehicles often without tangible protection!

‘The main method of improving the safety. . . described by the recovery
agents was the introduction of rear red lights for their vehicles. . . [They
stated that] red lights would be more effective than amber which merely
created a “moth effect”. The apparent common use of red lights by TOs
(regardless of type of incident being attended) was referred to with the
consequent query:
“Is the life of a Traffic Officer more valuable than that of a recovery agent?”’
(Source: Sharratt, 2009)
But we have become used to risking our lives without tangible
protection, WE DO IT 24/7, 365 days a year, in all conditions.
We’re not the hero’s though, are we?
For years the recovery industry has been requesting parity of
safety, with other services. If there is a major motorway incident
we attend, if there is a fatal RTC, we attend alongside of the
emergency services. Often terror attacks, like 7/7, London Bridge,
Glasgow Airport, require our support and services.
And there we are, alongside one or other of our colleagues
at the roadside, sometimes just us, because we have been left
to clear the incident! The police, the fire brigade, ambulances,
Highways traffic officers, all have the benefit of rear flashing Red
Lights - for their protection!
This warns oncoming motorists of potential danger, which will
allow them to at least slow down, and quite often move away
from the potential of danger or a collision.
I have printed the letter from Grant Shapps here, sent to me
last year. Which clearly sets out the reasons for not allowing us
the use of red lights, but is totally unclear about how the DFT
came to their conclusion! There is no tangible evidence that
supports the DFTs decision!
I can only suspect the reason given came from a report

compiled by TRL in 2009 that was commissioned by the then
Highways England that concluded that HATOS, should be allowed
the use of red lights, for the increased protection and safety of HE
traffic officers.
In that report two points are made by TRL:
1. There could possibly be a concern that if the recovery industry
VRO’s were granted the same safety concession, it “COULD”
possibly dilute the effect for traffic officers working on
motorways. This is just a concern and is in no way evidence
based!
2. The other point raised in the same report was “Is the Life of a
Traffic Officer more valuable than that of a recovery agent”.
The fact remains, is this sickening question has never been verbally
answered. What is more sickening is that the DFT obviously believe
that traffic officers lives are more important than that of a VRO, by
denying us the same concession of safety it allows them. This in my
opinion is discrimination, pure and simple.
It also denies VRO’s their equal rights to be as safe as not just
traffic officers, but tree cutting council workers who have lanes
closed to afford them protection and maintenance workers who
are provided with lane closures and impact vehicles that protect
their lives!
The fight against discrimination should not be waged against
a government department, not in an age where all workers, are
deemed to be equal, and all share the same levels of safety!
But if it’s a fight the DFT want, it’s a fight I’m willing to have.
I want to look my staff in the eye and say: “You have the same
rights to safety as a traffic officer, a police officer, a doctor or a
nurse.” We all do.
The DFT have been denying the recovery industry our
fundamental right to equality.
It seems to me that the DFT have learned nothing from their
original roll out of Smart Motorways, when in 2016 they ignored
safety claims backed up eventually by deaths which could have
been avoided.
The recovery industry worked and continues to work tirelessly
with National Highways to increase safety on all of the SRN,
wherever possible.
Let me make this clear, National Highways are in no way
responsible for the current situation. I look forward to enjoying and
continuing to work with them as a strategic partner.
National Highways are not the old regime of Highways England
I refer too in this edit. This is not about National Highways or its
current regime.

and work with National Highways.
While Mr Shapps and the DFT
have continually used dilution and
Highways England as scapegoats for
their refusal to grant this industry the
rightful use of red lights.
I just want to make it clear, because it is vitally important that
the work we are doing together continuous with honesty and
integrity. The DFT, should look those words up in the dictionary.
This is the DFT, however many bucks they pass, or Transport
Secretary’s we get saddled with.
Sadly, since that question was raised in 2009, the recovery
industry has lost numerous VRO’s and indeed an RAC patrol
worker. Killed on an A road which is not served by National
Highways traffic officers, because they don’t work on the road
network.
Frustrated by the DFT, who have chosen to stonewall the
recovery industry, unless it needs us to participate in a Smart
Motorway stock take.
I wrote to TRL, who we’re despite being researchers and
authors of the National Highways report I’ve just referred to,
have again been commissioned by the DFT, to again research our
request to use Red Lights.
I fully admit that the tone of my emails echoes my anger and
frustration, but in hindsight having met with representatives from
TRL, they are not responsible for my acute anger.
Derek Firminger and myself met with Shaun Helman and
Richard Cuerden on their stand at the Highways UK exhibition at
the NEC. Without boring you with details, my worst fears were
then confirmed by Shaun, who gave a detailed if totally irrelevant
to dilution report, on what TRL have been commissioned by the
DFT to research.
PROF will be presenting our case of discrimination and denial of
equal rights to the DFT, and the European Court of Human Rights
and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
I believe I have got enough evidence which TRL have helped to
provide in their respective letters and reports to make a real case
that recovery industry is being denied our equal rights and are
being discriminated against for no apparent reason.
Nikki King will be supporting our cause using her considerable
influence and experience, and charm which I am seriously lacking
now!
I am hopeful that PROF, strategic partners and stakeholders will
come together and support our right to safety and equality!

research, which is irrelevant to dilution of traffic officers’ safety.
The reason we were denied the use of red Lights. And the only
reason ever put in writing. Not by National Highways but by the
DFT.

Bell Truck Services were called out to a single-track road
leading to a local farm up near Huggate, East Yorkshire. The
refuse vehicle was fully loaded and had come off the single
track road and rolled over into the field. The conditions
were very wet and slippery due to the volume of rain we had
received earlier in the day.
The field was below road level and the access was
restricted for the recovery vehicles. It was assessed by
their incident manager; a plan was put together to place
the Foden (Peggysue) into the field. Using all three recovery
vehicles the vehicle was up righted with ease and then
winched back onto the road and recovered back to the
customers workshops.

Boniface Light City
Like many recovery companies today, Orchard Works
Garage needed an answer to small spaces and rising
costs. With the recovery business being so close to
Stansted airport and a growing need to attend vehicles that are
immobilised in tight spaces or low ceiling multi-storey car parks,
Simon and the team needed a practical solution that would

Keith Motor Co -
“Experience, precision, reliability”
Working with Euan Spence on his new
build has been an absolute joy for all of
us at J&J Conversions Ltd and we can
testify that at least one word in Keith
Motor co tag line is true, “PRECISION”!
Euan was meticulous with every detail
of the build, from chassis specification,
body specification to final graphics
design.
And it paid off!
The finished vehicle is nothing short of
fabulous, a 12T, 250bhp MAN Sleeper
cab in Metallic Platinum fitted with a
Predator slide bed and second car lift.
The build specification included a sliding
winch, heavy duty winching bollards, D
shackle, rear chocs, trolley jack, Jerry
can, wreckers kit, pigeonholes in the
locker and Ferrari ramps but perhaps it’s
the lighting that make this truck look so
special?
Adamant that the vehicle must be
visible from all angles and in any situation,
Euan added additional LED work lamps
along with specialist strobes, a front
facing amber light bar and scene lights.
If the vehicle can’t be noticed visually . .
. then there are always the obligatory air
horns!
After a devastating fire destroyed
their premises in 2014, it took 18 months
for Euan to design and have the new
workshop constructed. The company
was rebranded as Keith Motor Company
and through hard work and determination it is
flourishing. Employing a professional team, Keith

PROF Strategic
Partnership – EV Meeting
Topical EV issues were on the agenda at PROF’s strategic
partners October meeting, attended by United Kingdom
Rescue Organisation (UKRO), National Fire Chiefs Council
(NFCC), National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) and the
Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR).
Many IVR members and magazine readers may question
why the Institute is forging strategic partnerships with
particular organisations, they may ask “What’s the point?”
and “Isn’t the IVR there just for training?” The IVR is there to
improve the safety of the industry’s workers, in many ways and that
remit has to organically extend beyond pure training to ensure all
the dots align.
Richard Goddard’s vision for PROF’s strategic partnerships
was to give all strategic partners a communications platform,
to highlight issues and to mutually agree solutions. From the
outset Richard explained that there was no requirement for him
to attend all meetings, leaving detailed or technical meetings to
the experts involved. He had created the platform and now the
strategic partnership lay in each of the partners hands. This highly
constructive meeting, organised by the partners themselves, did
not disappoint.
Loose EV Battery Transportation
The IVR highlighted that batteries should not be transported
without their packaging – i.e. the surrounding vehicle, because
loose EV batteries must be transported as dangerous goods and
follow Class 9 ADR, the recovery technician also has to be ADR
trained.
Those present agreed to communicate this requirement within
their respective sectors:
● The police to ensure that they do not ask an unqualified
operator to move batteries from venues that may illicitly
disassemble stolen motor vehicles and sells their parts.
● The IVR to ensure their training and guidance includes the
vehicle recovery operator (VRO) not moving loose EV batteries
without a Class 9 ADR qualification, invalidating the VRO’s
insurance, at the same time placing them with additional risk
associated with lithium ion batteries and possible prosecution.
Should this become a requirement for a VRO’s police contract
VROs may need to negotiate a “variation of contract” to
ensure that they are appropriately remunerated, and it is also
recommended that they also check in with their insurer if they do
agree to such a commitment.

Other types of EV
Electric scooters have similar risks to an electric vehicle and
therefore the NPCC indicated that their movement should be
by recovery operators. It is a requirement of NHSS17/17B that
technicians have attended the IVR VR27 EV/Hybrid Vehicles
course so that they are suitably trained to deal with all types of
electric and hybrid vehicles.
Water and EVs
There was also a report of a recent incident where a drone on
fire had closed a road for an extended period of time whilst it
was decided how it should be dealt with. As is always the case,
a fire falls under the the remit of the Fire Service. Some VROs
may be tempted to put it into a tank of water such as an IBC
to prevent re-ignition – but with that there are environmental
implications when disposing of the water, so it is not a
straightforward option.
The other dangers that were brought to the forefront were
that corrosion could be a contributory factor in thermal event,
also placing a lithium ion battery directly onto a transporter
bed, steel or aluminum, could affect the stability of the battery,
so correct containment is essential. Vehicles that had been
exposed to copious amounts
of water through recovery
from water (submersion) or
Fire Service intervention could
be at a higher risk of thermal
event when corrosion begins
to develop within the battery in
the weeks and months following.
This explains why it is important
to continue with regular thermal
checks of vehicles in storage as
recommended in the IVR’s EV/
Hybrid Vehicles module.
A further strategic partners meeting is to be scheduled
in the near future.
IVRUPDATE
EV/Hybrid Protocol
The latest version of the EV/Hybrid Protocol includes guidance for
employers and employees on the use of vehicle fire blankets. Released
at the Tow Show 2022 the protocol offers industry guidance for the
recovery of electric and hybrid vehicles.

onto an A4 page and folded to form a booklet.
EV guidance doesn’t stop there. The Department for Transport are
due to release a revised version of their Recovery Operators: A Guide
to Electric Vehicles, which has now been collaboratively reviewed,
by key industry stakeholders and partners including the Fire Service,
UKRO, The Institute of Vehicle Recovery, AVRO and HSE to bring it up
to date for the vehicle recovery industry.

Developing the protocol and communicating issues within the strategic
partnership is an example of the additional role the IVR plays for the
benefit of all, over and above the National Training Scheme. Every day

driver George King
George King, nephew of Judgepower Training Services
owner Mike Gibson, started his racing career after his
dad purchased a race car simulator for himself. George
has always been a kid that spent hours playing on computers,
so the simulator was of great interest to him. During lockdown
George spent many hours on the simulator and the family asked
if George would like to start racing for real. He had never shown
much interest previously however decided to give it a go.
George obtained his race licence in September 2020 and
started racing Mazda MX5’s in the UK. After showing great
promise he was handpicked by Le Mans 24-hour veteran and
multiple single-seater champion James Winslow to race in the
Gulf Radical Championship in the UAE.
In January 2021 George was invited to race in the Dubai
24-hour race with James and after a grueling 24 hours they
finished on the podium with a well-deserved third place.
George stated it was amazing as he had only started racing last
September
In October 2021 he was invited to drive for team JWR (James
Winslow Racing) in the Gulf Radical Championship, he stunned
series officials and regulars by immediately finding his feet in
slicks and wings racing. In his first 20-minute qualifying session
he managed to get pole for both races that weekend. After
three rounds George had three wins, three poles and three
fastest laps. George won the Gulf Radical Championship with
the final round held in Dubai after securing multiple wins and
breaking many lap records. During the championship Mike
and Tracey of Judgepower Training visited George in Dubai to
support him and talk of sponsorship came up.
The following season George was invited to race in the
2022 Ligier European Series racing in a LMP4 race car. Mike
from Judgepower, a motorsport fanatic and trainer at many
motorsport circuits throughout the UK, wanted to support
his nephew George in any way he could visiting and following
the races wherever possible. Recently Mike and Tracey
visited Spa in Belgium to watch him race. They were unable

to attend the final race in Portugal due to being in the USA,
however even though it was a tough race George finished
3rd in the Championship.
Next year George is looking to race in the next stage up
being the Le Mans Prototype 3 series where Judgepower
will continue to fully support him along with his main
sponsor Goldcrest Oil who have depots in Essex, Midlands,
North East Wales and Sout Yorkshire and are able to offer
nationwide distribution of commercial lubricants. Any

We were called to the A484 just outside of Carmarthen on 29th
June at around 16:00 to a vehicle on its side blocking the road. When
we contacted the driver of the vehicle (who was uninjured) before
deploying any recovery vehicle he informed us that the vehicle was
off road down an embankment and in a field and had shed its load.
We then deployed our super 90 rotator along with one of our small
underlift and a support vehicle. The road was closed for around six
hours while the recovery took place.

Just in time for the colder weather, this Multi-function Jump
Starter from Laser Tools (part number 7405) is an efficient
and extremely compact emergency engine starting power
pack. Surprisingly small, but packs a powerful punch! Packed full
of features, it also features a bright LED to illuminate the work
area, (flashing mode can be used as an emergency beacon), two
USB outputs (for charging mobile phones, etc), a Type-C input/
output port and a digital voltage display on the cable clamp
adaptor. The unit and accessories are supplied in a convenient
and protective case.
The unit is charged from a suitable USB port on a PC, taking
approximately three hours to fully charge. As it charges, the
power/charging LED display will cycle through the four LEDs.
Once fully charged, the LED display shows four indicator lights
ON.
These are used with the multi-function lead which includes the
following device connectors: USB, 2 x Type C and a micro-USB. Port
7 is a Type C input/output port which is used when charging the
device but can also output (5V / 3A).
Don’t let the small size fool you, the Multi-function Jump Starter
will start diesel engines up to 3.5 litres and petrol engines up to
4.5 litres. It is a remarkably versatile and very powerful little jump
starter.

The jump starter is equipped with two USB ports that are

Output 1 is a USB QC 3.0 rated port (3.6V – 12V; 1.5A – 3A).
Output 2 is a standard USB port (5V 2.1A).
