THREE YEARS ago, retired
cabinet-maker Paul Clearwater,
then 66-years-old, did
something he’d never done
before. He started building a sixmetre
boat, on his property.
It was no ordinary boat.
The plans were for a hull that
came with a warning, using
techniques any inexperienced
boat builder should have
thought twice about.
That didn’t deter Clearwater
and, on Friday, the craft was
launched at Lyttelton with
friends around to congratulate
him.

Distinctive
pink
building
to be
demolished

A SUMNER landmark building
on Marriner St that was, for most
of its life, known as Sunleigh Flats,
is to be demolished to make way
for apartments designed by an
architect who was a student at
the Prince of Wales’ Institute of
Architecture in London.
The new owner of the distinctive
pink building on the corner
of Burgess and Marriner St is
local developer, Brooksfield. It has
employed London-based architect
Ben Pentreath to design the
building.
Pentreath is perhaps best known
for his involvement in designing
Poundbury, the Duchy of Cornwall’s
experimental planned
community development on the
outskirts of Dorchester. That development
was endorsed by King
Charles III when he was Prince of
Wales and Duke of Cornwall, and
many regarded it as the prince’s
pet project.
Sunleigh Flats was a private
hotel, then a children’s home for
a short time, before being turned
into flats. It then hosted Ali Barbers
Hair Stylists, but has sat idle
since the earthquakes. It is about
100-years-old.

Apprentice baker’s swift rise to the top

EMILY BAILLIE was in the
third year of her apprenticeship
when she rose to become the
best young bread baker in the
country.
The 20-year-old, who works at
the Bohemian Bakery in Sumner,
said she never expected to win
the New Zealand Association of
Bakers competition.
“I was in shock. I was the
youngest competitor with the
least experience and I thought
my competitors would win it. I
actually almost cried.”
Besides the title, Baillie was
also awarded a $10,000 research
grant.
This year, there were four
craft bakers and two plant bread
bakers taking part in the twoday
competition in Auckland,
which included a presentation on
a given topic, a 90-minute theory
test and a five-hour baking
session.
Each participant was required
to make a range of breads,
including two loaves of white
sandwich bread, two different
types of white loaves, four
different types of smallgoods,
two variety loaves of grain or
wholemeal bread, and four
different types of sweet bun.
Baillie said recipes for the
breads were given two months
before the competition so

“My competitor had the same
recipe, but she didn’t know them.
So in one of the breads, it was
supposed to be 1.5 per cent salt
but she put 1 per cent salt. Little
things like that can really affect
the bread and how it works,”

Zealand at the prestigious LA
Judge Awards in 2024 – a threeday
competition recognising the
best young baking apprentices in

apprenticeship with a bakery in
Hokitika in her final year of
high school.
Six months later, she moved
to Christchurch to broaden her
horizons. Since then, Baillie has
been working at the bakery.
So far, the unusual working
hours have been the biggest
challenge.
“It’s not normal to wake up
and get to work at 1am. It’s
definitely a challenge to change
your body clock completely and
working at a completely different
time to everybody around you.
“It’s a bit hard to have any type
of social life,” she said.
The $10,000 award will go towards
a baking course overseas.
However, Baillie has not decided
where to go yet.
At the moment, she is looking
to specialise in pastry after
completing her qualification in
baking.

Irresistible challenge a labour of love

“The hull is kind of like clinker-built
in reverse,” he said. It’s
supposed to allow the boat to
travel more easily through the
water, “kind of like hydroplaning.
The challenge of building
it was something I could not
resist”.
The craft is built completely
of wood, using timber milled
from his own property where
he has lived since he was 12
years old. It also showcases
wood from all around the
world, and no plywood. “The
variety of wood I’ve used is
what makes the boat so special,”
Clearwater said.
“After retiring, I wasn’t simply
going to sit inside the house all
day, so I took on the challenge.
A few hours a day with plenty of
time in between to think about
how I was going to tackle the
next part,” he said.
The project cost him the tips
of two fingers in a workshop
accident, but he has no regrets.
It’s been a labour of love and
appropriately, he has named the
boat Passion.
For timber aficionados, the
streamlined hull is alaskan cedar
on a canadian oregan frame.
The decking is african iroko, a
greasy timber used a lot in boat
building.
“It’s poor man’s teak,”
Clearwater said.

The structure also includes
american oak, the framing in
the cabin is eucalyptus nitens
(grown on his property) and the
outside and floor of the cabin is
kauri.
Inside features cypress, the
window frames are robinia, and
there are mahogany trimmings
all around.
To top it off, the boat’s wheel
is american walnut with sweet
chestnut spokes.
Passion was launched without
a hitch with about a dozen bystanders
applauding as Clearwater
headed off towards Governors
Bay with a couple of close mates
on board and, after he returned,
he took more friends out for
five-minute cruises.
Clearwater said he was never
worried.
“It’s been well-built and
well-tested,” he said.
Clearwater built a dinghy
once, but never anything like
this. As far as his next challenge
is concerned? No, this will be it,
he said.
“My next goal is simply to
enjoy what I’ve built.”

Alcohol ban
submissions
close in
one week
WOOLSTON residents have
seven days left to submit their
opinions on a temporary alcohol
ban in the area.
A public consultation to
determine whether residents,
businesses and community
groups support the proposal
of implementing a six-month
temporary ban in the Woolston
Village area will close on
December 7.
The decision on the ban is likely
to be made in the middle of the
month.
The ban prohibits public
drinking or anyone carrying open
alcohol containers in public places
within the specified ban area.
The proposed area includes
Hargood St, Glenroy St, St Johns
St, Ferry Rd, Rutherford St, along
the Heathcote River, Cumnor
Tce, Riley Cres, Laura Kent Park
walkway along the Heathcote
River and back to Hargood St.
If there is sufficient evidence to
support a ban, city council staff
will write a report recommending
the council brings in a temporary
ban.

site has to be the most noticed in
the Sumner village, he said.
“We’re very excited about this
one, [and] we want to do Sumner

The new complex will front
onto both Marriner and Burgess
Sts and will include garaging and
ground level commercial space.
It’s the second time the
property has sold this year. The
previous owner bought it in April
but “had a change in direction,”
according to Colliers consultant,
Courtney Doig who marketed
the property.

Canterbury, Club Redcliffs
conducted a comprehensive
Kiwi Bowls programme from
September to November with
approximately 200 year 5-8
pupils from Redcliffs School
and Mt Pleasant School taking
part at the club to experience
bowling.
The programme culminated
in two bowling tournaments

A prize-giving and sausage
sizzle was held on the final day.
The young bowlers were
enthusiastic, supportive and
showed great promise.
The club has had excellent
feedback from the schools about
how much the young bowlers
enjoyed themselves.

Treasures from the Past:
Sweeping mines
SOMETIME IN the dark hours
of June 13 and 14, 1940, on the
day the Nazi Wehrmacht would
triumphantly enter the city of
Paris, France, the Kriegsmarine
auxiliary cruiser HKS Orion
sailed into Auckland’s Hauraki
Gulf cunningly disguised as a
merchant ship, and quietly laid
228 naval contact mines.
Five days later, the Union Steam
Ship Company’s 13,415 ton trans-
Pacific liner RMS Niagara struck
two of these mines off the Whangarei
Heads and promptly sank by
the bow with the tragic loss of the
ship’s cat Aussie who failed to join
the 349 crew and passengers in
one of 18 lifeboats.
And so it was that the World
War 2 explosively arrived in New
Zealand waters.
Facing the prospect of deadly
mines blockading the entire
island nation, the wartime Labour
Government of Prime Minister
Peter Fraser swung into action,
commissioning a fleet of minesweepers
to keep New Zealand
ports open. Based on a Royal
Navy coal-fired trawler design
from World War 1, the Castleclass
minesweepers proved quick
to build in shipyards around
the country. The 13th and very
last of her class to be laid out,

46, and with a catch of fish after a depth charge.
the HMNZS Waiho was built by
Stevenson & Cook Engineering
in Port Chalmers and launched
on February 19, 1944. At 447 tons
she was powered by a coal-fired,
single shaft reciprocating engine
delivering 480 IHP for a maximum
speed of 10.5 knots.
With a complement of 27 crew
members she was armed with a
single 12-pounder naval gun, 20
depth charges and ASDIC sonar
for anti-submarine operations.
Her minesweeping equipment
consisted of 1km long trailing
cables for hooking mines, and
dan marker buoys for marking
cleared waters.
Named after the Waiho
(Waiau) glacier-fed river
that starts at the terminus of
the Franz Josef Glacier, she
entered service with the 194th
Auxiliary Minesweeping Group
at Auckland on June 29, 1944,
taking part in daily mine sweeps
of Waitemata Harbour. A year
later in June 1945, with the war
against Imperial Japanese forces
still raging in the Pacific theatre,
the Waiho sailed for Lyttelton to
search for and clear the harbour
of any mines.
While deployed, apart from
the minesweeping patrols, she
conducted gunnery and anti-submarine
drills, including the use of
depth charges that evidently also
delivered a bountiful by-catch of
what appear to be hāpuku groper
(please note that Te Ūaka The
Lyttelton Museum does not condone
the illegal practice of blast
fishing).
After ensuring that Lyttelton
Harbour was free of Nazi mines,
the Waiho returned to Auckland
on September 4, 1945, just two
days after the Japanese formal
capitulation ending World War 2.
Fall in love
Joining the 25th Minesweeping
Flotilla as a danlayer, she assisted
in the final sweep of the Hauraki
Gulf.
With her wartime deployment
completed the Waiho was sold to
Red Funnel Trawlers Pty Ltd of
Sydney in May 1946, renamed the
Matong, and began her presumably
non-explosive fishing career
in June 1947.
After 10 more gainful years at
sea she was laid up in December
1958 and finally scrapped in
Singapore in 1964, although her
hull’s double bottom apparently
lived on as a pontoon.

recognised the Rangatira from its

What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories

Skoda SUV packs powerful punch
THERE OFTEN comes a point
in time when you know the mode
of transport you have isn’t fit for
purpose.
That happened to my wife and
I just recently as our old sedan
made way for a sport utility vehicle.
The latter providing us with the
entry and egress comfort we need
as our hips give way to old age,
notwithstanding modern engines
are far more fuel efficient than our
car that was designed over 20 years
ago.
Of course, being the petrolhead
I am, I would have liked to
have purchased something with
a bit more punch from under the
bonnet, but in terms of cost I had
to be realistic about that.
Had funds been available, we
may well have purchased a Skoda
Kodiaq – the RS version. It has
all of the comfort ingredients we
were looking for in an SUV, but
under the bonnet sits the 2-litre
turbocharged engine that has
found its way through a raft of
Skoda, Seat, Cupra and Volkswagen
product, notably the VW Golf GTi.
The Kodaiq RS isn’t quite as
gutsy as Volkswagen’s Tiguan R,
but it does have much the same
engine, albeit with lower power
outputs. Saying that, at 180kW and
370Nm the Kodiaq RS does have
48kW and 50Nm greater than the
2-litre TSi version I evaluated in
these columns in August.
The Kodiaq RS also benefits
from a recent facelift amongst the
six-variant series, it also gets a high
fitment package that extends to
satellite navigation, paddle-shifters,
panoramic sunroof, keyless
entry and ignition, electric seat
adjustment, seat heaters and a host
of other minor features.
Skoda’s marketing slogan is
‘simply clever,’ and over the years
I’ve mentioned many times the little
niceties that make the brand stand
out from others. In the Kodaiq RS
it was the plastic wheel trims that
sit inside the actual alloy wheel
itself, they can be removed to give
the vehicle a completely different
look. It’s the first time I’ve seen that
arrangement and, yes, it is clever.
Those features don’t come at
a huge cost; sure, at $79,990 the
range-topping RS will stretch some
buyers’ budgets, but the entire
Kodiaq range is there to lure buyers
who want quality product at an
affordable price. The entry level
model lists at $48,990, while those
in the medium grades sit in the
$60,000 bracket.
Of course, all models have the
benefit of space, that is the way
it is with the modern SUV, and
the Kodiaq RS is no exception,
there’s even seven seats, although
the two rear seats that fold up out
of the cargo section are really just
for children or those very slight of
build.

As with all VW Group models
the Kodiaq RS is quality-built
and comfortable, there is space to
spread out in, and the remaining
seats are beautifully formed so that
fatigue on a long journey is kept to
a minimum.
I took the test car on a long
inland journey through to the
Malvern Hills and it felt just so
balanced and controlled on that
journey, the hills and bends were
simply swallowed up with ease.
A lot of that has to do with the
way the suspension has been set up.
Of course, drive is sent to all four
wheels which means there’s a fully
independent system underneath.
The spring and damper rates
are firmed slightly, but there is
compliance within that so occupant
comfort isn’t jeopardised.
It’s important to have balance
underneath when you have healthy
power outputs up front. The 2-litre
turbocharged engine is a feisty
unit and, as I’ve alluded to, it’s an
engine that has found its way into
hundreds of thousands of vehicles.
I’ve never found a car that hasn’t
thrilled me when fitted with the
GTi engine, and in the Kodaiq RS it
is another exciting product.
In terms of performance it will
accelerate to 100km/h from a
standstill in 6.6sec and will make
a highway overtake in 4.6sec

passed several slower vehicles and
delighted in the mid-range boost
on tap.
Drive is distributed through a
direct shift gearbox with seven
distinct ratios, by the sheer nature
of its design it is a quick-changing
gearbox that doesn’t put any
unnecessary load on the engine.
That being the case, all of the
horsepower can be utilised for
speed and acceleration when
required. Not only is the engine
a real dynamo, it is one of the
most pleasing in today’s market,
thrilling with its potential and
sound, the automatic downshift
blip reminiscent of a race car on
track.
All that it offers doesn’t come
at the cost of massive fuel usage,
Skoda rates the Kodiaq RS with an
8.3-litre per 100km/h combined
cycle average. During my long
journey the instantaneous figure
sat around 6l/100km at 100km/h
(engine speed 1750rpm) resulting
in a 9l/100km combined figure
when I took the car back to the
dealership.
I particularly enjoyed my time
with the Kodiaq RS, it’s a feisty,
fun SUV that offers a point of
difference in this age where
hybrids and electric vehicles are
commanding that part of the
market.
The Kodiaq RS stands up to
be counted with its honesty and
driveability, it has that fun factor
and serious capability both on-road
and off, although undulating offroad
excursions would be the best
bet. It’s not a serious cross-country
model, but it will take the family
into the high country lakes for that
summer fishing trip and/or the
winter ski field access road with
much ease.
Coincidentally, I dropped
the Kodiaq back and picked up
the VW Tiguan R two days later.
Both have incredible performance,
it’s just whether you want the
maximum this engine will deliver
or not.
