living with Down Syndrome and<br />

“While as a swimming nation<br />
we are very early into our Down<br />
Syndrome inclusion, we are<br />
committed to helping Luka<br />
and the next generation of<br />
swimmers with Down Syndrome<br />
who haven’t made it into our<br />
competitive events as yet,” Leslie<br />
said.<br />

help, the opportunity for Willems<br />
to compete at the Virtus Games<br />
“wouldn’t have happened”.<br />
“He is trying to open up<br />
accessibility for swimming<br />
athletes with disabilities at an elite<br />
level. It’s so awesome.”<br />
For Willems, it’s just the start<br />
of a successful international<br />
swimming career, as he begins<br />
preparations for the Virtus Global<br />
Games, held in France next year.<br />
“I hope my journey inspires<br />
people to do something new and<br />
maybe challenging too.”<br />

for cycleway repairs<br />
A SHORT section of Ilam<br />
Rd will be closed for a week<br />
as part of the cycleway is<br />
repaired.<br />
For the contractor to finish<br />
the work as quickly as<br />
possible, the road near the<br />
intersections of Kirkwood<br />
and Rountree Aves will be<br />
shut to traffic from Saturday<br />
to <strong>December</strong> 11.<br />
“During the cycleway<br />
resurfacing works that were<br />
completed earlier this year,<br />
the road wasn’t showing signs<br />
of failure. Since then we have<br />
we found significant cracking<br />
in an area from 71 Ilam<br />
Rd for around 80m south to<br />
the paved threshold near the<br />
Kirkwood Ave intersection.<br />
“This has worsened over<br />
time with the volume of daily<br />
traffic, including buses and<br />
trucks,” city council transport<br />
planning and delivery manager<br />
Jacob Bradbury said.<br />
“We carried out tests and<br />
discovered there wasn’t<br />
enough gravel beneath the<br />
asphalt, so we need to remediate<br />
that.”<br />
Traffic detours will be<br />
in place, while pedestrian<br />
and cycle access will be<br />
maintained through the<br />
closure.<br />
“We know it’s not ideal<br />
having to come back to do<br />
repairs in a short space of<br />
time so we really want to<br />
thank residents and those at<br />
the University of Canterbury<br />
for their patience,” Bradbury<br />
said.<br />
