THE
CHAIRMAN’S
UPDATE
- AUTUMN 2022
BY LORRAINE DAVIS
MBICSc
As I look back over 2022,
obviously the outstanding
moment so far has been the death
of our late Monarch, Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II. I believe that
no one would have known or
experienced the rule of such a long
serving and dedicated Monarch as
Her Majesty.
The Institute was founded in 1961,
her late Majesty came to the throne
in 1952. The Royal family and the
nation are led by a new King, King
Charles III. So, in fact, it’s a visible
and emotional end of an era.
Changes or ends of eras are not
always this highly defined. In the
time that I have been Chairman of
the British Institute of Cleaning
Science, I have seen and witnessed
many subtle changes that have
represented the passing of
another era.
For example, a black-tie event is the
only event where you can be sure
that most gentlemen are wearing
a tie (at least at the beginning
of the evening). Also, more and
more staff enjoy the flexibility
of hybrid working... except of
course our cleaning operatives.
Prior to the pandemic, there was
minimal online training at BICSc,
but now approximately 80% of
our training is delivered online.
The driver for this was obviously
the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whether due to outside factors
or BICSc striving over the last
ten years to remain relevant
and up-to-date, things have
changed subtly over time. With
the introduction of CPSS in
2012, there was a major change
as COPC had remained more or
less unchanged since the 1960’s.
For example, we taught mopping in
COPC as a figure of eight (Torvill
& Dean method) but in CPSS, this
updated to systematic overlapping
passes (Carl McDermot method
i.e., Lords Cricket Ground Head
Groundsman). The reasons for
this were a fundamental change
in mopping equipment, e.g.,
flat mopping and the improved
muscular skeletal technique.
The complete rebranding of BICSc
and the name change from BBS
to BICSc Training & Services was
fundamental in consolidating
the change in our systems and
processes. Not all changes can be
traced back to a single event, but
the Institute’s strength is in working
with its members and suppliers and
having a dedicated team of staff
supported by the Council.
Best wishes
THE BICSc
BULLETIN
WELCOME TO THE
AUTUMN EDITION!
BY NEIL SPENCER-COOK
MBICSc
NEIL SPENCER-COOK
Chief Operating Officer
Well, I can safely say it has been
a very busy quarter since we last
published. It’s also been a time of
celebration as the BICSc Awards
took place which saw a much
welcomed return to the
exceptional evening event and
also included an inspiring
daytime conference.
The Industry Insights Conference
was well attended, and I would
like to thank all the presenters
who not only gave their prepared
presentations but also responded
to any queries from the audience on
the day. This is not always the easiest
part of the session, but everyone
handled all the questions well and it
was great to see interactive face to
face participation again.
We were fortunate to have some
of our international centres
represented at the event and it was
rewarding to put faces to names and
to meet in person rather than over
a Teams call.
In other news from HQ, the
BICSc team have been busy with
organising, assessing and verifying
new candidates and centres. We’re
especially delighted to feature some
personal accounts in this edition
where our customers recount
their BICSc journey, the smiles
saying an awful lot!
THE STANDARD
This quarter also saw an extended
stay in Northern Ireland as we
were asked to judge the inaugural
Northern Ireland Cleaning Awards.
The welcome by the participants
was warm and professional and the
only issue was in having to make a
decision of who out of the cleaning
operatives would win these fiercely
contested awards. All was revealed
during the evening celebrations, but
we would just like to say that in our
eyes every contestant we met was a
winner. Their commitment and work
ethic was of the very highest standard
and their clients were rightly proud
of them.
We were also delighted to attend
the Clean & Tidy Home Show, being
provided with the opportunity
to speak on the main stage. The
welcome and the questions following
this certainly offered a challenging
and different slant on cleaning to our
usual show audience.
I hope you enjoy reading this final
issue of the year.
HERE IS BICSc ATTENDING THE
CLEAN AND TIDY HOME SHOW.
WE HAD LOTS OF DIFFERENT AND
UNIQUE CONVERSATIONS AT OUR
STAND, AS WELL AS GAINING A
LOT OF INSIGHT INTO THE PUBLIC
MINDSET ON CLEANING.

LESSONS, LEARNINGS
AND LEISURE:
APPLYING CLEANING
METHODS AT HOME
BY DENISE HANSON
FBICSc
Our recent attendance at the
Clean & Tidy Home Show made
me think in more detail about the
cleaning methods that I use not
only in the workplace but also
within my home.
For example, when cleaning the
bathroom I do use a bucket of
cleaner disinfectant solution
to clean my cloths, I also have
different cloths for the toilets
to those I use for the sink, bath
and shower – this method is so
ingrained by years of using it
professionally, I automatically use
it for home – it’s quick, effective
and efficient so why wouldn’t I?
One of the panel members at
the Clean and Tidy Home Show,
Faye, made a very valid point in
her responses that we should
treat cleaning at home more
professionally and set ourselves
a time limit – allocating time for
the cleaning so that our time off
can also be allocated to more
leisurely pursuits. It did resonate,
as often one cleaning task can lead
to another and before you know
where you are you’ve spent a whole
day off cleaning the house!
So which commercial cleaning
methods can be applied at home?
Realistically most of them, after all
vacuuming is vacuuming, does it
matter whether it’s an office or a
living room?
Damp wiping is probably the easiest
way to clean most surfaces and the
use of microfibre can reduce the
time taken without compromising
the quality of the clean.
The recommendations I would
make for cleaning at home are:
1. Employ colour-coding -
You really don’t want to
clean your kitchen with a
cloth that previously
cleaned the bathroom.
2. Understand the PPE
requirements of the products
you choose to clean with,
chemical accidents don’t
only happen at work!
3. Minimise cleaning products.
Microfibre usage helps
with this but by choosing
a multi action product you
can minimise storage and
the conflicting scents of
the product ranges.
4. Allow the products the
relevant contact time,
this means the product
does the hard work so
you don’t have too.
5. Always clean from clean
to dirty – this minimises
the chance of cross
contamination.
6. Set a time limit for cleaning,
don’t let it run away with
all your free time.
7. Look back at what you
have achieved and enjoy
the fruits of your labour.
I hope these top tips help. All that’s
left to say is that I’m looking forward
to the next Clean and Tidy Home
Show and what other learnings
I can glean!
A FLORENCE
NIGHTINGALE
MOVEMENT
BY KELSEY
HARGREAVES LBICSc
In the past couple of months,
I have had the pleasure of
attending a couple of great
healthcare conferences.
In early September, myself and
Samantha Willson MBICSc
attended the AHCP conference
as exhibitors and spoke with so
many different professionals
from all parts of the healthcare
industry. Although myself and
Samantha were kept busy on
the stand talking, we did get
to participate and watch some
talks. I was very happy to see
that a lot of the information
being shared was around
training and the importance
of training in cleaning for the
healthcare sector.
Again in late October I enjoyed
attending the Infection
Prevention Society's (IPS) annual
conference in Birmingham, and
again, I saw the same theme:
TRAINING!
THE STANDARD

THE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE HANDY GUIDE
TO HAND WASHING AND HEALTHCARE
To add to the care capacity during
the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK,
plans were made to adopt temporary
hospital spaces for those in need
of COVID-19 related treatment;
Nightingale Hospitals.
The inspiration around this name
was no other than Florence
Nightingale, known as the founder
of modern nursing. In addition
to her incredible work on data
analysis of patient needs, education
for the less advantaged in society
and her reformation of Victorian
workhouses, Florence Nightingale
is renowned for her outstanding
work on healthcare cleanliness and
the importance she played in the
increased adoption of hand hygiene.
In the National Standards of
Healthcare Cleanliness, the 50
elements show us that clinical teams
are recommended as the responsible
group for the cleanliness of some
of the elements. Doctors, nurses,
HCAs are all trained in how to give
excellent care to patients, but they
are not, for the most part, trained in
how to clean correctly or effectively.
Whether in healthcare or not, if
anyone is asked to, or is expected to
be responsible for the cleanliness of
an element, it is imperative that they
are effectively trained in how to do
so.
Included in training, but worth
mentioning in its own right is hand
washing! Every talk I attended at
the IPS conference talked about
training in hand hygiene and how
although we seem to be getting
‘back to normal’ in everything
else, we need to continue to drive
education in correct hand hygiene.
Whether you use a UV glow
machine, assessment based training
or virtual training, hand hygiene
education is imperative to the safety
of your cleaning operatives, users
of your facility and even you. Don’t
just believe me, dozens of infection
prevention specialists agree!
It has been a pleasure watching how
healthcare cleaning professionals
and infection control specialists are
starting to shout about the same
important issues in the industry.
Let’s re-boot a Florence Nightingale
movement, real care doesn’t just
mean a comfortable bed and a nice
meal, it means giving the patient
treatment in a clean environment.
The only way we are going to
do that is if all those that are
responsible for the cleanliness of
a facility are trained to clean safely
and effectively.
HOW CAN YOU START?
Why not start by visiting our
virtual training suite?
In line with healthcare practice,
at BICSc we offer healthcare
based units which teach a
candidate to clean in an
effective and safe manner:
▪ 14 BICSc Healthcare
Base Units
▪ 14 BICSc Healthcare
Additional Units
▪ 14 BICSc Healthcare
Specialist Units
In addition to these new
42 Healthcare skills, we offer
Cleanlogic qualifications that are
each certificated within BICSc
standards. This training is not
only applicable to the cleaning
operative, but should be utilised
by all that have responsibility for
the cleanliness of an area.
We even offer A FREE COURSE
in hand hygiene that is certificated,
anyone can do it; cleaning
operatives, doctors, porters, nurses,
administrative assistants and more!
We need to hold up our half of
healthcare! Be the change you
want to see.
HOME SECRETARY’S
COMMENTS BRANDED
‘RIDICULOUS’ AND
‘OUT OF TOUCH’
The British Cleaning Council (BCC) has branded the Home
Secretary Suella Braverman’s comments about reducing
migrant workers entering the country as ‘ridiculous’,
‘completely out of touch’ and ‘divorced from reality’.
The £59 billion a year cleaning,
hygiene and waste sector has been
suffering from severe staff shortages
since a tightening of immigration
rules last year aligned with cleaning
and hygiene professionals being
incorrectly labelled as unskilled,
making it more difficult for overseas
workers to join the industry.
The BCC has been calling for
Government to recognise the vital
work of sector staff and help with
the recruitment crisis in the sector,
which is one of the ten biggest
industries in the country, for over
a year without success.
With COVID cases rising nationally,
the UK heading into the flu season
and monkeypox cases already
prevalent, the industry body has
warned the crisis could hamper the
nation’s 1.47 million cleaning staff
from carrying out their vital, frontline
role of keeping hospitals, schools,
supermarkets and other public
buildings virus-free.
The Home Secretary recently told the
media that Britain had too many lowskilled
migrant workers and numbers
needed to be reduced.
BCC Chairman Jim Melvin said: “I was
appalled to hear these ridiculous and
completely out of touch comments
from a Home Secretary. They are
completely divorced from the reality
that industries like ours face with
huge recruitment problems.
THE STANDARD
“Putting more
restrictions on workers
entering the country
when there already aren’t
anywhere near enough UK
nationals coming forward to fill
the mass vacancies is absurd. It
also seems very surprising from
a politician whose own family, I
believe, were migrants, to pursue
such a short-sighted policy.
“In the healthcare sector, cleaning
staff are close to breaking point
trying to keep facilities virus-free
and throughout the industry we are
struggling to maintain the standards
needed to keep the public healthy,
safe and well because of the number
of vacancies.
“With the risks posed by
Coronavirus, flu and monkeypox
increasing, I dread to think what
could happen over the winter. The
lack of staff could affect hygiene
standards, and who knows, it could
arguably put some people’s lives
at risk.
“I truly hope that is not the case, but
the Government should consider
themselves pre-warned and surely
we have to learn lessons from
the last few years. The industry is
desperate for the same kind of help
that other sectors have received but
the Government is not listening.
“It has classified cleaning staff as
unskilled but, in fact, the sector’s
skilled and professional personnel
perform a vital, frontline role that
needs to be recognised. Strangely, I
don’t recall Mrs Braverman decrying
the unskilled nature of our brave
colleagues over the last few years. It
would appear that yesterday’s heroes
are today’s unskilled and unwanted.”
The Government’s own figures state
that there are 1.26 million vacancies
more than people to fill them.
The cleaning and hygiene industry
has traditionally depended on
employees of all nationalities, with
Labour Force Survey figures from
2020 showing that 20 percent of
the cleaning and hygiene industry
workforce nationwide were from
overseas, rising to 55 percent
in London.
But following the new rules
brought in by the Immigration Act
in 2021 and Brexit, many foreign
nationals working in the industry
left the country. UK nationals have
traditionally not joined the industry
and so vacant positions are proving
difficult to fill.
While other sectors, such as poultry,
truck driving and fruit picking have
all received Government help due
to recruitment issues, the cleaning
and hygiene sector has not received
Government assistance.

COULD YOU BECOME A COUNCIL MEMBER?
BY STAN ATKINS FBICSc
Next year in 2023, there will be a Council election for individual representatives.
The main purposes of Council are:
To represent the
interests of members
To monitor delivery of
the agreed Strategic Plan
To represent and
share the ethos of
The British Institute
of Cleaning Science
To be eligible to join Council as an
individual representative, you must
have had three years continuous
membership and be a fully paid-up
member of the Institute. Individual
members are elected to Council by
the individual members that have
voting rights. This is done by means
of an independently managed ballot
carried out by UK Engage. Individual
Council members are elected for a
period of three years at which point
they may stand for a further term.
The maximum number of years an
individual member can serve is nine
years, i.e. three terms.
Next year there will be four potential
vacancies for individual members.
If you wish to stand for Council,
provided you have met the criteria,
you will need to provide a passport
size photograph and a 200-word
submission including what you
believe are the attributes you can
bring to this important role, you will
also need to confirm that you are
eligible to stand as a director.
As far as Corporate Member
representatives are concerned,
they represent the interests of the
Corporate membership. Corporate
members are appointed by Council,
the company concerned must
have been a Corporate member
for three years and the individual
representative must be a member in
their own right with valid voting rights.
The Institute encourages applications
from all sectors of the industry, from
operative to manager, the wider
the range of representation of the
industry the better.
What would be the expected
commitments to Council?
1. To be engaged with the Institute
via all channels of communication
so that you are aware of current
events, developments, and
changes to the Institute.
2. You will be required to attend
five meetings a year (two of
which will be held via Teams and
three which will be held faceto-face),
currently the face-toface
meetings are held close to
Birmingham Airport.
3. All elected members will be made
Directors of the Institute during
the time they serve on Council;
therefore, they will be subject to
the Companies Act 2006.
If your organisation uses the logo supplied when you join or renew on your company’s website, any
visitor who clicks on this will be taken to the YOSHKI verification page, which validates that you are a
paid-up member of the Institute. Although this is vitally important, only a small percentage of members
use this facility. The number of spurious logos and people who claim to be corporate members are
increasing yearly, so by using our correct logo/branding, you are protecting your investment.
A RETROSPECTIVE!
AMAZING
AWARD
WINNERS!
Incredible achievements and
exceptional standards of excellence
within the professional cleaning
industry were celebrated at the
proved as popular as ever this year
with everyone who attended the
glittering event.
Celebrating the exceptional
standards and leading lights of the
covered a range of impactful industry
issues, leading trends and topics.
A HR Legal Update: Supporting
your business and employees was
led by Gillian McAteer, Director of
Employment Law at Citation. The
topic of youth employment in the
UK was the focus of BICSc Kelsey
Hargreaves who focused on the
problems facing young people
looking for employment, especially
within the cleaning industry.
Other highlights included A survivor’s
story led by Fiona Bowman MBA
CIWFM FCMI who highlighted how
employers can make a difference and
provide support for members of staff
who are affected by domestic abuse.
The evening’s proceedings got
underway with a sparkling drinks
reception which allowed guests to
mingle and network prior to the
awards ceremony getting underway.
Stan Atkins, Group CEO, welcomed
guests to the awards event with
winners announced during
the evening.
Amongst the award winners were
the University of Northampton,
who were presented with the
Outstanding Corporate Member
of the Year award with the judges
acknowledging: “The University of
Northampton holds everything that
BICSc stands for at the heart of its
practice. It is clear the service is run
with staff safety and fulfilment as the
biggest priorities.”
For the second successive year
the Excellence in Training &
Assessment (International)
accolade was presented to Emrill
Services LLC with judges’ comments
highlighting how “Emrill shout
about the importance of training,
the achievement of their team
and creating a safer working
environment for everyone”.
New for 2022 was the inaugural
award of Outstanding Client
Commitment by a cleaning operative
which was won by Donna Harris
of the University of Northampton.
Judges comments highlighted how
“Donna’s commitment to the client
underpins everything that she does.
Donna is a fantastic advocate of this
amazing industry… the standard of
her work was incredible”.
Other winners of the night included
Rhys Goddard of Vinci Facilities who
received the Outstanding Candidate
of the Year accolade with judges
paying tribute to how “Rhys has
come over many personal difficulties
and a time of adversity managing
to gain invaluable qualifications,
increase his working hours and just
recently has used his learned skills
and qualifications to be promoted”.
WIPING THE SLATE CLEAN:
A BETTER REPUTATION FOR
THE CLEANING INDUSTRY
BY JAMES MARSTON
LBICSc
How much longer can we as a
sector operate in today’s market?
Battling to make contracts
profitable, fighting off the
competition, paying our staff
in many cases minimum wages,
as well as work in a sector with
a reputation as a last resort
employer widely considered to
have little or no opportunities.
Some may see this as a harsh
description eclipsing all the good
work we do but these observations
are regularly quoted to me. No one
wants the current status quo. The
solution is not purely down to the
cleaning sector but our clients, and
society as a whole. Tough to change
the world but not impossible.
What could some of these changes
be? Firstly, a consulted and agreed
sector-wide plan for positive
change with long term objectives
would be a good start.
A mindset change of the general
public and Government about
the value of our people and their
contribution to society would be
most welcome. Especially covering
how working in our industry has
health benefits through regular
physical activity, which might be
news to many.
Skilling all our frontline
teams on induction and beyond
recognising time served
experience, their progress and
increased contribution to the
business through pay. I know that
some companies already do this,
but a significant percentage of
businesses do not.
The hope for UK recommended
remuneration levels or increased
benefits. Perhaps incentives
backed by the sector for time
served skilled operatives,
including those promoted to team
leaders and supervisors. Some
organisations do this already to
great effect. All clients, building
owners and service providers
could be stakeholders in its
design. Instead of fighting for new
contracts based on squeezed costs,
it’s in fact quality that could be the
winning factor.
What would our rebranded
cleaning sector look like? For
cleaning operatives it’s a place to
keep working and not a stepping
stone to something better. A
solution to secure household
income and not the last choice in
people’s minds.
JAMES MARSTON
Training and Support Specialist
Recognition in pay for new skills
gained and value to the clients
and service providers. A career
for those who want one with
clear achievable steps to greater
responsibility.
For employers and clients, a
consistent service, considerably
higher staff retention rates. Skills
training for staff in the long term
not on recruitment and induction
to replace existing human resource.
Less churn means lower costs and
closer partnerships.
Greater recognition by the public
as an essential service for all with
better terms and conditions, a
bright future for its employees and
happy customers!
Of course, we all want this and
there are other barriers and
influences organisations and the
sector must tackle to win.
A conversation with sector leaders
and organisations would be a good
place to start. I for one would do all
I can in support of positive change
for us all.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT:
WE HAVE THE INGREDIENTS,
LET’S START FOLLOWING A RECIPE.
Six years ago when I first moved
out into my own place, I was
living off the bare minimum. Like
many 18 year olds, my money was
spent on “socialising” or obscene
Amazon Prime orders instead of
on nutritious meals. I remember
talking to my grandma on the
phone one day about what I had
had to eat the night before,
“That’s right Grandma, cheesy
scrambled egg and bacon followed
by a bowl of plain pasta”.
After laughing, she stopped and
said, “Why didn’t you just make
something nice like a carbonara?”
What was she not grasping?
I only had pasta, bacon, some
cheese and an egg … not a
Schwartz carbonara mix in sight.
I have since learned (been made
to look up the recipe) that you
can make carbonara with pasta,
bacon, some cheese and an egg,
who knew?
In the last issue of The Standard
I wrote about youth employment
within our industry, about
shouting about ourselves more.
At the BICSc Exhibition and
Industry Insights Conference
I spoke about what we are missing
as an industry when it comes to
youth employment.
SO HERE IT IS, A FIVE-STEP STARTER RECIPE FOR
GETTING ON TRACK WITH YOUTH EMPLOYMENT:
1. UNDERSTAND THE NEEDS
OF YOUNG PEOPLE AND BE
ACTIVE IN RESPONSE
One of the best ways you can
start to understand the needs of
young people is by researching
the struggles facing young people
today. The Youth Voice Census was
published on the 6th September
2022. The census is the biggest
collection of youth voice and
insight in the UK. It provides a
unique understanding of the
experiences young people are
having in the systems around them.
READ IT HERE
The statistics that came from the
youth voice census are invaluable,
and should be utilised by potential
educators and employers to create
a better environment for the young
people they currently work with,
look to employ or young people
they wish to retain.
2. LEARN WHERE TO SHOUT
IN THE RIGHT PLACES
We are very vocal as an industry
in our own media setting. We have
many industry magazines, social
media accounts and events that push
opportunities, as well as development
programmes and innovations that
we have to offer. But we also need to
question whether this is something
that young people outside of the
industry actively know about.
To get our new generation, we need to
go to the places where young people
are looking. It’s researching where
schools, colleges, universities and local
governments are pushing younger people
to apply for careers, and understanding
what support is there for them.
Become not only an option for the
new generation, but a known option.
I did not lack the core
ingredients I needed for
a carbonara, I lacked the
understanding of how to make
a carbonara. I just needed some
steps to follow to reach the
end product. We as an industry
do not lack the tenets of great
employment, opportunity and
careers, we just do not understand
how to utilise what we have to
welcome the new generation of
cleaning professionals.
THE STANDARD

3. LEARN TO SHOUT POSITIVELY
We need to speak positively about
our experiences. Change the
dialogue per se. In my previous
article, I gave you my reasons why
I stayed in the industry. Share your
own stories, utilise your reasons as
reasons to onboard people!
Share pictures of your incredible
teams, show the family you have in
your business. Show the exciting
parts of the careers we have!
4. SPEAK THE SAME LANGUAGE
Ever read a job advert and thought, “I
have no idea what that means, I’m not
applying”, because I certainly have.
We can be seen to be an innovative,
intelligent industry without the
overuse of technical jargon. There
is a lot more intelligence in making
harder information accessible than
what it is to simply use technical
jargon with no explanation. Read
your job adverts! Does it contradict
itself or are you offering full training
but explaining the job in language
the applicant will only understand
after their training with you?
And of course, the other side of this
is that we need to understand the
youth, and how the information
they are equipped with to help. It’s
understanding the school grading
systems of younger people and the
educational financing available to
them. Only this way can we change
our approach to the younger
generation and advertise
appropriately.
5. UTILISE OUR EXPERIENCE AS A
TOOL OF DEVELOPMENT, NOT
AS A SEPARATION TOOL
It is clear that at the age of 24 I am
not going to have the experience
of many of you reading this article.
Should I be penalised for that?
Absolutely not. Do I respect each of
you for the hard work you have done,
yes. Do I look up to you all as role
models for my career in the industry,
completely. Should I be made to feel
inferior because my age means I have
a lot less experience: No.
I have been fortunate to work
with and under some of the best
managers I could have asked for.
My growth and development has
come from their ability to share their
experiences with me and allow me
to develop on from the lessons they
have learned, instead of allowing
me to partake in the same struggle
when they know what the outcome
is going to be.
The age-old paradox of needing
experience for a job but not being
able to get experience is still very
much a prevalent issue in our
society. Why not change
that? Understand and
utilise your experience
effectively.
There is indeed a lack of experience
in youth, a lack of experience in
those applying in our job market.
The politics of our industry, the
struggle, the development, the time
you have had in the industry are
just some of the factors which have
given you invaluable insight and
experience.
But… experience is not what
happens to you, experience is what
you do with what happens to you.
Share your experience and utilise
the knowledge you have from it for
the greater good.
Remember, your greatest struggles
can be someone else’s greatest
strengths.
IS AUTOMATED CLEANING
REALLY VIABLE?
Cleaning standards and
expectations have changed since
the Pandemic. We rely on cleaning
operatives to keep spaces clean
so that we can stay healthier.
Although our standards have
changed, staffing levels have
not, with a severe downturn in
availability since Brexit. It's an
ongoing topic of conversation
and one that doesn't seem to be
changing anytime soon.
FM companies, and the like, must
devise better solutions to these
more rigorous standards, high staff
turnover and shortages, but what
are the realistic options?
Cobotics (collaborative robotics) in
cleaning have been more prevalent
over the past year or two than ever
before. And where there seemed
to be a fear of robots taking human
jobs, we actually see benefits over
the longer term. By no means do
we want to replace that human
element in cleaning, as there is
still so much robotics can't do, but
we want to help reduce mundane,
repetitive tasks which take up so
much time.
Alleviating the laborious nature of
vacuuming, mopping and scrubbing
means operatives can hit their
daily targets of deep cleaning,
touch-point cleaning and sanitising,
all while monitoring a fleet of
cobots. As technology and features
improve, and ROI is possible in
as little as 18 months, having a
robotic team member looks more
attainable as pressures grow.
So what are the options on the
market? The most prominent brand
in the UK is Lionsbot, producing
a line of high-quality, easy-touse
automated cleaning robots.
Lionsbots' newly launched R3
Scrub at Interclean in Amsterdam
has increased interest in cobotics
since its arrival in May 2022.
THE STANDARD
A large FM company has already
deployed R3s within healthcare
centres and corporate offices. As
a more compact version of the
LeoBot, the R3 is super quiet and
super efficient, scrubbing up to 1200
square metres per hour. It's also
perfect for dust mopping and can
diligently clean 1800 square metres
per hour. Controlled manually or
through the app, an operative or
manager can monitor and command
each machine remotely.
Additionally, the R3s low water
usage at just 6l per hour means there
is no overuse of water. With the UK
seeing massive droughts this year
which are expected to last well into
2023, it's a resource we need to
save. Reservoirs across the country
continue to be at lower levels than
usual. Nearly half of reservoirs were
classed as exceptionally low for the
time of year, with total stocks at 52%
of total capacity on 20 September.
Hospitals across the UK have widely
adopted LeoBots into their cleaning
regiments, and there are currently
25 deployed in a healthcare setting.
The LeoBots fall into Lionsbot's
mid-sized range of cobotic
machines and have been delighting
patients young and old with their
personalities. But on a serious note,
the LeoBots allow operatives more
time to handle touch-point cleaning
and cross-infection control, with
the cobots dealing with large open
areas such as corridors.
Certainly, your biggest option in
automation is the Rex. This monster
machine comes equipped with
200m Lidar coverage, 10-hours
runtime, 81cm cleaning width
and up to 80kg of brush pressure.
Rex can conservatively clean
1700 square meters per hour and
has been installed in two major
logistics and distribution sites and
a prominent London-based airport.
The scale and nimbleness at which
Rex can clean is truly a sight
to behold.
On a smaller scale, robotic
disc vacuums are becoming
commonplace not only domestically
but within commercial settings.
Travelodge, one of the largest
hotel chains in the UK, completed
a rollout to all 579 of their hotels,
of 7,500 robotic vacuums, between
July and September 2021, to clean
44,000 rooms daily. As it stands, this
is one of the largest mobilisations of
automated cleaning equipment the
UK has seen.
Travelodges' decision to introduce
robotics was driven by the need
to relieve its housekeeping staff
of very time-consuming work
and improve its sustainability as
a company. Each RoboVac uses
600 watts of power compared
with 1,200 watts for a traditional
vacuum cleaner and are bagless.
The simple change cuts down on
waste, and staff love them—it is
seen as a win-win solution for more
efficient cleaning while supporting
the sustainability of our planet.
The future of cobotic cleaning looks
very bright, and with good reason.
Some of the biggest companies
in the UK, in both the Public and
Private sectors, are embracing
cobotics to solve problems.
Whether you are facing staffing
issues, want to improve health,
need to streamline costs or focus on
sustainability, cleaning automation
is proven to work—integration is
not only possible but viable.
THE BICSc
ASSESSOR BULLETIN
As we are now over halfway
through 2022, we hope you are all
returning to a new normal.
We expect that many of you will be
training candidates again and we
would like to take this opportunity to
put together an Assessor bulletin and
provide you with more information
on the BICSc Assessor App. We
hope that this is a useful guide when
submitting assessments and that you
find this information helpful in your
role as a BICSc Licensed Assessor.
We want to reduce the number
of queries raised which will result
in your cards being delivered in a
timely manner. We are always here
to help and if you have any questions,
please do not hesitate to contact
your BICSc Customer Co-ordinator.
When you submit a Licence to
Practice assessment (via the app or
via email), we ask:
• You complete each field accurately
and that you provide an email
address and phone number for
the candidate. The contact details
provided must be for the individual
and not the assessor or company.
We request this because, once the
candidate’s details are registered,
we can keep them updated with
anything related to BICSc and we
can contact them following their
free year of individual membership
to check if they wish to renew.
• If the candidate is renewing their
Licence to Practice, please provide
their candidate ID (this is the
candidate’s membership number)
so we can update their record.
• If all cards are to be delivered to
an alternative address to that of
your scheme co-ordinator, please
ensure that the delivery address
section is completed and correct.
• It is mandatory to provide a
photo. We do ask that you send
a head and shoulders photo of
THE STANDARD
the candidate facing forward
and for this to be good quality.
We cannot accept photos where
the candidate’s face is covered
unless the covering is for religious
reasons and that the photo is not
modified with filters.
• When submitting via the app,
you can continue to submit
assessments for up to a maximum
of 3 months before you are
required to submit a purchase
order/provide payment in order
for the skills cards to be produced.
• All assessments submitted via
the app must be completed live.
We regularly check the timings
of assessments submitted. The
reason we do this is so we can
ensure that the assessments
being carried out meet the
BICSc Standards.
• We cannot accept assessments
where the assessment date is
older than 6 months.
• We no longer accept
handwritten forms. All Licence
to Practice and CPSS Skills
forms being submitted via email
must be completed electronically.
This reduces the amount of
spelling errors made.
We hope that you have all been able
to use the CPSS Assessor App even
if you haven’t used it for submitting
assessments yet. We know from
our own experience that it is easy
to use and is a more efficient way
of submitting the assessments
because you do not need to
scan and email the paperwork
and photos to us. You are also
able to save the assessment
straightaway. Once submitted,
you will receive an automated
email which notifies you of the
assessment submitted.
We are happy to receive feedback
as we know that there will always
be room for improvement and have
already made updates to the app to
make it even more user friendly.
To guide you through how to get
the best out of the app, we have
developed a free course for assessors
which gives you lots of useful hints
and tips and provides you with all
the information you require.
www.bbs-virtual-training.thinkific.
com/courses/cpss-assessor-appuser-guide
If you have any questions or require
MY CAREER IN CLEANING
BY HAMID GHADRY
FBICSc
I began my career in the cleaning
industry almost by chance. Having
spent two years in the army as
corporal immediately after college
graduation, I initially started work
in a bank. First as a cashier and then
as a clerk in a clearing house dealing
with incoming cheques, which was
only supposed to be a temporary job.
I remember leaving the bank and on
my first day as a cleaning operative, I
was inducted, issued with a fresh full
uniform and introduced to staff and
working areas.
Luckily my new employer was a
BICSc approved training centre and
I was put through COPC stage 1 and
2, which is now CPSS. It was not a
case of you standing around with a
mop, this end for holding and that
end on the floor for mopping,
which I appreciated.
Initially I thought it was a lot of
details for a mere cleaning role,
maybe I was young or should I say
younger. As I started putting the
training into practice through daily
tasks as per given work schedules
based on specifications in reference
to dilution rates, colour coding,
COSHH, electrical safety, hand
hygiene, PPE, displaying caution
signs among others, I began to
understand the importance of each
element and how those interlinked
into other areas such as health
and safety, sustainability and
environment, laws and regulations.
I then learned more about
microbiology and chemistry
background to substances used
and interaction of cleaning agents’
surfactants with the surfaces, its
different types and how molecules
are differing and positively and
negatively charged. This intrigued me
so I delved more, researched more
and became involved with the training
side further. That is how I invested my
time more and more with training and
development over the years.
Since then I have been involved
directly in staff training and
development programmes
wherever I have worked across
the UK and have put through
almost 900 plus staff on the BICSc
Licence To Practice, and moved
on to do more skills – Base Units,
Additional Units and Specialist
Units. I enjoyed it then, and still
enjoy it now.
It’s no secret and I can’t hide the
fact that I love the Institute and I
have yet to come across another
set of nationally accredited
qualifications which come even
remotely close to BICSc skill
suite. This historical Institute has
been in place since 1961 and has
almost over 50,000 Individual and
Corporate Members globally and
continues to be industry leader in
training and development. Plus it
moves on with recent innovations/
technologies ensuring it remains
up to date and relevant.
What makes BICSc unique is its
emphasis it places on valuing
our unforgettable hard-working
domestic, cleaning and support
staff (considering they were our
heroes during the pandemic).
On the other hand, the BICSc
training skills suite is world
class, covering best practice
in detail, is delivered in two
formats of theory before
practical, then followed by
a thorough assessment and
eventually leading to globally
recognised accreditations.
I have personally witnessed
how this training transforms
our staff’s careers, improves the
cleaning services provided and
how motivating and engaging it
can be.
Within my current role as
Facilities Services Manager at
the University of Northampton
we have fully embraced BICSc
standards and our business
model for soft services is built
on its framework.
We are proud to be both a
Corporate and ATM member of
BICSc. We have so far Licenced
almost 100 staff members on LTP
and moved on to deliver a package
of 10 selected skills (combination
of Base/Additional/Specialist
Units) to all our employees. This
is parallel with our organisation's
visions and values and its mission
statement of provision of excellent
services for our students and
other stakeholders.
BUSTING THE MYTHS OF BUYING IN BULK
FOR MORE COST-EFFECTIVE, HYGIENIC,
AND SUSTAINABLE HAND HYGIENE
BY PAUL JAKEWAY
Buying in bulk is often seen as the
cost-effective and sustainable
choice. But when it comes to hand
hygiene, are you really getting what
you expect - and pay for?
With 80% of germs spread by
hands 1 and viruses able to survive
on hands for up to five minutes after
transfer from a surface 2 , preventing
the spread of germs in your facility is
a must. But against the backdrop of
rising costs and increasing pressure to
be greener, how can you be sure you’re
getting the best bang for your buck?
Rubbermaid Commercial Products’
(RCP) International Marketing Director,
Paul Jakeway, busts the myths of
buying soap and sanitiser in bulk.
MYTH: TOPPING UP
STOPS IT TOTTING UP
If you want to save money you buy
in bulk, right? Not when it comes to
soap and sanitiser dispensers. These
dispensers distribute unnecessarily
large doses of soap or sanitiser and
the less concentrated product results
in more wastage and more frequent
refilling, adding unnecessary cost and
hassle you don’t need.
The solution: Choose dispensers
that use sealed refills for controlled
dispensing and more applications
per refill. A necessary amount of
product for a safe clean – say
0.4 ml - is dispensed without the
unwelcome wastage.
MYTH: AS LONG AS
THERE’S SOAP OR SANITISER,
YOU’RE DOING THE JOB
Unfortunately, not all hand hygiene
is created equal. In fact, at least
one in four bulk fill dispensers are
contaminated with illness-causing
bacteria 3 . This is because there are
multiple points on the dispenser
where bacteria can contaminate
the replenishment supply, such as
an open-top lid and push-button.
Often, units don’t get cleaned but are
“topped up” against guidelines 4 and
then cannot be decontaminated; an
infected unit must be fully replaced to
remove the risk.
With workers averaging three sick
days per year 5 productivity losses
through germ-spreading in your
facility are high: if your business
has just 100 employees, it could be
£35,100 a year 6 . Making sure your
hand hygiene provision isn’t actually
contributing to the problem is
therefore a must.
The solution: Go for dispensers that
use hygienically sealed refills to keep
soap and sanitisers fresh and free
from cross-contamination.
MYTH: AS LONG AS IT’S
THERE, NO ONE CARES
People’s perceptions of your brand
are formed by the experience you
give them at every touchpoint. Your
washroom is no exception – in fact,
74% of people say dirty washrooms
cause negative perceptions 7 . With
66% of people saying they use a
variety of methods (including flushing
the toilet with their feet!) to avoid
making contact with anything in a
washroom 8 , offering a touch-free
washroom experience will build your
reputation as a brand that takes its
users’ experience seriously.
The solution: Provide touch-free
soap and sanitiser dispensers, which
are preferred by 92% of people 9 and
show you take their experience and
wellbeing seriously.
MYTH: BUYING IN BULK
IS THE GREENER CHOICE
Bulk fill dispensers may be cheaper
at the outset, but their notoriously
flimsy construction means you run
the risk of having to replace them
regularly. Not only is this costly for
your budget but it also generates
unnecessary additional waste.
The solution: At RCP we encourage
our customers to “Buy Better, Waste
Less” which means prioritising
durability so your products last
longer, improving sustainability. Look
out for long product warranties on
dispensers to get that peace of mind.
And if you want to go even further,
innovative battery-free dispensers
take greener hand hygiene to a new
level. The RCP LumeCel AutoFoam
dispenser, for example, is powered
by natural or ambient light sources
in your facility, negating the need for
batteries.
A RECAP OF THE RIPPLE EFFECT
CONTINUING THE SERIES OF ARTICLES ON
WORKPLACE AND DOMESTIC ABUSE
BY FIONA BOWMAN, EIDA AMBASSADOR
This time let’s look at some of
the impacts of domestic abuse,
particularly on work colleagues
and in the community, because
domestic abuse doesn’t just affect
that one person who is the victim.
There is a “ripple effect” which
permeates out to affect so many
other people.
If you think about your workplace,
if there was someone who was in an
abusive relationship and was having
to take days off because of trying
to hide injuries, do you think you
would notice?
If you did, would you say
anything? Do you think
that having to cover for
someone who was
taking frequent days
off would make your
job harder? Do
you think that you
might be resentful
of someone
who, when they
were at work,
sometimes
didn’t “pull their
weight”?
Well, a victim of domestic abuse
will be trying to hide any evidence
of the abuse from work colleagues
and friends. They might wear more
makeup to hide black eyes, or they
might have to wear clothes that
would cover up bruises, like a polo
neck jumper in summer. They may
have to take time off at short notice
if they have been assaulted. Plus,
they will make up all sorts of excuses
to cover the truth.
If they are getting abusive phone
calls or texts from their partner, they
may have to go away from their work
area to take the calls, because they
are embarrassed. If you were to hear
someone being verbally abused by
a partner, would you feel able to say
anything? Because often victims
won’t admit to being abused. They
won’t admit that things in their lives
are chaotic and that life for them is
really difficult. But as a friend, or a
work colleague, just let them know
that you are there if they need to
talk. Just reaching out a hand of
compassion and not judging
them could be all they need
to know, because being
abused and being a victim
of domestic abuse is a
very lonely place.
Abusers will try to
isolate themselves
from their friends
and family which
will make them
feel unworthy and
useless. Having
a job to come to
every day can be

TITLE,
SUB TEXT
a real lifeline and if employers have
domestic abuse policies in place
to help staff who are affected, you
would be able to direct them to
your Manager, HR Department or a
Domestic Abuse Champion in your
workplace who will be trained to
signpost a victim to the help that is
1St out there Para [BOLD] in the community.
2nd Sometimes Para [REG] when colleagues know
that there is something going on, they
are afraid to say anything, they might
feel that it is none of their business.
But we know that domestic abuse
is everyone’s business! If something
happens to the person and they are
injured, not having said anything
leaves people with a sense of guilt.
So always share your concerns with a
Supervisor or Manager and let them
deal with the situation.
RIPPLE EFFECT
You must never try to step in to help
the person without first talking to
your manager. Being sympathetic
and kind is always a good place to
start, but don’t expect the person to
open up and tell you what is going
on. Sometimes the best-intentioned
intervention can put the victim in
even more danger. And everything
has to be done at the pace of the
victim. Remember, you cannot “fix
this situation”. Domestic abuse
is a complex subject. But always
remember that if the person, or a
colleague is in imminent danger of
harm, call 999 immediately.
Often perpetrators will try to
discredit their victim to work
colleagues, damaging their
reputation, insinuating alcohol abuse,
drug abuse or that they are failing
in their childcare responsibilities.
Sometimes perpetrators will hang
around the workplace and will quiz
members of staff and colleagues
about their partner. Don’t give out
information and make sure you
report the incident to your manager
and security.
If a victim has managed to flee
the relationship, the perpetrator
will know that the victim will be
at work and will come and try to
find them there. Your workplace
may be helping that individual so
don’t ever share information with
the perpetrator, their friends or
family. Family members may try
to get information by phoning up
or coming to the workplace and
showing concern. Pass on any
reports of calls or approaches to
your manager.
WIDER COMMUNITY
FAMILY AND FRIENDS
SURVIVOR
WORK COLLEAGUES
Nowadays there are lots of support
services for a victim to access. Many
landlords will have special procedures
in place to deal with victims of abuse
who need to flee the home and the
relationship. Doctor’s surgeries
and Hospitals have trained IDVAS
(Independent Domestic Violence
Advocates) who will help to signpost
victims to the help they need.
If you are experiencing domestic
abuse and need immediate help, ask
for ‘ANI’ in a participating pharmacy.
‘ANI’ stands for Action Needed
Immediately. If a pharmacy has the
‘Ask for ANI’ logo on display, it means
they’re ready to help. They will offer
you a private space, provide a phone
and ask if you need support from
the police or other domestic abuse
support services. They will have a
private room where the victim can
call domestic abuse services or the
police. Domestic abuse services
locally have trained staff who can
meet a victim out in the community
and offer them help and support.
To find your local service look on
your local police website under
domestic abuse.
Please email me if you
assistance on this crucial matter:
THE HYGIENE
MANAGEMENT
REVOLUTION
At BICSc, we believe that
a great tourist experience
begins with a clean and
hygienic environment
and we are working with
our trusted partner,
Riyadh-based SaveFast
Training Academy to find
ambitious Saudi Nationals
who will be the leaders of
a Hygiene Management
Revolution.
The unprecedented growth in
the Saudi tourism industry that
is being driven by Vision 2030
has created the demand for a
tourist experience that meets
international standards for
hygiene management and the
Saudi Government’s plan is that
this should be driven by ‘homegrown
talent’. So, in order to
attract ambitious young Saudis
to the industry, our partnership
aims to change perceptions, and
elevate standards, improving
both education and awareness in
the Housekeeping Sector of the
Kingdom’s Tourism Industry.
In a proud moment, SaveFast was
selected by the Saudi Ministry of
Tourism as a training provider for
their Tourism Pioneers Program.
This ground-breaking program is
part of the government’s drive to
achieve its Vision 2030 aims by
empowering and upskilling Saudi
Nationals. SaveFast is training
thousands of aspiring Saudis in
Hospitality Hygiene Management
in partnership with BICSc. The
partnership has developed the
innovative new Hygiene Officer
Training Program which delivers
the fundamental knowledge and
skills required to begin a career in
this important sector.
SaveFast has developed a
5-day course that covers all the
fundamental aspects of the role
of Hygiene Management in the
Housekeeping Sector, including
the BICSc Licence to Practice,
allowing aspiring Saudi Nationals
to become the drivers of a
revolution in cleaning standards
and methodologies.
BICSc is delighted to be involved
in this very worthwhile endeavour
and we hope that along with
SaveFast we can usher in a
step change in the quality and
implementation of hygiene
management in the Kingdom.
BICSc TRAINING AS A TOOL
FOR BETTER STANDARDS,
SAFETY, RECOGNITION
AND COMMUNICATION
WITH KHANSAHEB
FACILITY MANAGEMENT UAE
KELSEY HARGREAVES
Assistant Technical Specialist
Earlier this year I had the privilege
of training some of Khansaheb’s
fantastic employees in Dubai.
While I was training with Joy,
Julie, Jutiresa and Wilson, I was
enthralled by their knowledge of
BICSc standards, their love of the
cleaning industry and just what
BICSc could offer them. After
getting back to the UK, I wanted
to share the incredible messages
that the Khansaheb FM team had
to say about their experience
of BICSc and their fantastic
journeys through the industry.
Khansaheb Facilities
Management describes itself
as one of the fastest-growing
facilities management companies
in the UAE with multi-sectoral
expertise. They pride themselves
on their innovative attitude to
sustainability, motivation and
development of their staff.
This is some of their BICSc
Accredited team behind
the scenes!
JULIE LEE
- SOFT SERVICES MANAGER,
CENTRAL
Julie oversees soft services
delivery across several FM
portfolios (including: commercial,
residential, schools, government
sector, healthcare and FMCG
companies in the UAE). She has
held her PBICSc for over 10 years
and manages the BICSc training
academy at Khansaheb, ensuring
that all Khansaheb FM staff are
trained to BICSc standard.
WILSON NGONGANG
- FACILITIES SUPERVISOR,
COMMERCIAL
Wilson received his first BICSc
licence in 2016 with his former
company and joined Khansaheb in
January 2017. Alongside his work
as Facilities Supervisor, Wilson is
also a BICSc Licensed Assessor and
loves sharing the knowledge and
skills he has learned with all of his
employees.
JUTIRESA CABASAL
- RESIDENT TRAINER/ASSESSOR
Jutiresa has been a BICSc Licensed
Assessor for 4 years. Alongside
her assessing, Jutiresa works as
a Soft Service Supervisor and
educates her amazing teams on
all things BICSc!
GLENDA SABATER
- SOFT SERVICES TEAMLEADER
Glenda became a BICSc Accredited
Trainer in 2021 and is soon looking
to progress to BICSc Licensed
Assessor. In her role as Team
Leader, Glenda ensures that the
standard of cleaning at her clients’
sites goes above and beyond what
is expected.
JOY VILLAGRACIA
- SOFT SERVICES MANAGER
Joy has recently undergone his
assessor training and is counting
down the days until his assessor
verification! Joy works as a
Soft Services Manager for an
international chain of hospitals
in the UAE.
Myself and the training team from
Khansaheb sat down and talked
through their experiences of BICSc
training, what it had offered to
them as individuals, how it had
impacted their colleagues, their
favourite BICSc memories and how
it felt to be part of the BICSc family.
Here are the three main things
they talked about:
SAFETY FOR CLEANING OPERATIVES:
“One important factor in
Khansaheb Facilities Management
is safety comes first and having the
BICSc skills defines on how we do
things safely”
JULIE LEE
“The step-by-step process that
BICSc training gives us means
that the safety of myself and
operatives is the main priority”
JOY VILLAGRACIA
THE STANDARD

RECOGNITION FOR THE CLEANING OPERATIVE:
“Exercising and delivering
training to cleaning operatives and
the heart-warming appreciations
from team members are energising
and makes my day”
JOY VILLAGRACIA
“It is truly an honour and a great
accomplishment for me to train,
mentor and assess people, and see
their progress in BICSc Skills, from
PBICSc, to skill assessments and
then they have been trained by
BICSc to Accredited Trainer and
even BICSc Licensed Assessor!”
JUTIRESA CABASAL
“I love to see people that came
with no experience walking
around their workplace proud
to show off their BICSc Licence
cards and know that they have
achieved something amazing”
JULIE LEE
“My favourite memory of BICSc training
was when I had trained some new operatives
in their first week at work. I had spent all
week with them, showing them the BICSc
skills and training them, after their training
they all passed and you could see how proud
and happy they were of their qualifications”
WILSON NGONGANG
Without me asking
about language
barriers, or the
communication
that BICSc training
has to offer, each
of the team spoke
about how BICSc
had helped them
communicate with
their teams.
BICSc TRAINING AS A TOOL FOR COMMUNICATION:
“I train people of all different
nationalities including people that are very
new to the English language, but when I train
BICSc, I know I can communicate with them.
They show me they know how to do their job,
and know how to keep themselves and other
people safe”
GLENDA SABATER
“BICSc is a constant tool for
training, like a circle, you never
stop learning or improving,
whether you are just starting your
training or whether you are an
Assessor, we keep improving and
learn better practice”
JUTIRESA CABASAL
“Training, assessment and practice
through BICSc has given us the ability
to communicate better and learn from
mistakes. You have a cycle of training
and retraining where we can all work
to improve together”
GLENDA SABATER
“BICSc can be taught
and learned by all
walks of life and
doesn’t require any
spoken language”
JULIE LEE
“Even when we have had
language barriers, we have
been able to use BICSc training to
communicate with each other, we
can learn better standards and
understandings through practical
training and become a team”
WILSON NGONGANG
It was incredible to see the passion
that the team had at Khansaheb
and was a great reminder of all of
the work our Accredited Training
Members do all around the world.
I loved hearing about their
experience and could see that
even 4000 miles away we have all
enjoyed very similar experiences
of BICSc training.
I would like to thank the team at
Khansaheb Facilities Management
for their continued hard work
and their enthusiasm to share
the mission of BICSc!
KEEP IT UP EVERYONE!
THE NEED FOR CHEMICAL
FIRST AID TRAINING
Chemicals are commonly used by businesses of all sizes. Incorrect handling, or accidents can cause serious
chemical injury, which can lead to permanent disability, or death. Cleaning is the 6th most common profession
to sustain chemical injury. Roughly 10% of all chemical hospital admissions (Dong-Hee, et al. 2016). The most
common sites of chemical injury are the upper extremities and hands, with acid burns being four times more
likely than alkali. Inhalation injuries and eye injuries are also prominent.
Some household chemicals used
may have a relative low toxicity,
however, when mixed with other
chemicals, these relatively safe
substances can change state, and
become potentially fatal. Safe
systems of work and correctly
sourced and worn personal
protective equipment (PPE) can
help to mitigate some risks. But the
limitations of PPE, the effective
lifespan (the PPE’s break through
time) and its importance is often
unknown to wearers. Cleaning
operatives are also susceptible
to needlestick injury. So, in an
increasingly litigious world, it is
advisable that companies and
organisations protect their staff,
by giving them suitable training on
what to do in case of an accident.
The Health and Safety Executive
(HSE) state that where the work
involves higher level hazards
such as chemicals, or special
hazards such as hydrofluoric
acid, employers will then need
to provide additional training for
first aiders to deal with resulting
injuries (HSE, 2018). Training
providers must show that they
are competent to deliver the
first-aid training.
Staff at PARAMEDICSRUS.COM
SC JOHNSON
PROFESSIONAL
UNITES FOR UNIVERSAL
HAND HYGIENE
Global Handwashing Day was an
opportunity for us all to unite
in recognition of the worldwide
importance of hand hygiene. This
year’s theme ‘Unite for Universal
Hand Hygiene’, is a reminder that
we can all do our part when it
comes to encouraging good hand
hygiene behaviours.
The Global Handwashing
partnership who initiates the
day is a coalition of international
stakeholders and SC Johnson is
proud to be a steering committee
member. The partnership brings
us together with other key parties,
including government agencies,
multilateral organisations, nongovernmental
organisations,
academic institutions and
commercial organisations like
ourselves. Together, we support the
partnership in addressing crucial
topics related to public health and
handwashing as well as helping to
facilitate important conversations
which can help lead to change.
Handwashing with soap is an
easy and effective method of
helping prevent infections;
improving access to handwashing
facilities and hygiene behaviours
has the potential to drive great
health benefits across the globe.
Improved handwashing can lead
to a decrease in loss of life and
healthcare costs, as well as an
increase in productivity 1 in both
low and high-income countries.
OUR WORK WITH THE
PARTNERSHIP
The partnership draws on the
expertise and experience of its
members to propose practical
solutions to health problems
around the world. An example of
the partnership’s efforts includes
its work with bodies such as the
World Health Organisation (WHO)
to create guidelines for hand
hygiene in public facilities and
community settings.
We passionately believe that
handwashing with soap and better
universal hand hygiene has the
potential to build global health
and economic resilience against
the spread of infections. The
COVID-19 pandemic brought
unprecedented attention to hand
hygiene 2 and it is imperative that
the energy from this is harnessed.
Since joining the partnership in
2020, the role of SC Johnson
has been to provide experience
and expertise to support the
development of global best
practices. SC Johnson Professional
has taken a lead role bringing
specific learnings, data and
scientific evidence from studies
it has carried out, but also from
real-world customer interactions.
As a global provider of professional
skin care and cleaning solutions,
SC Johnson Professional can
provide insight into the impact
that poor hand hygiene can
have in workplaces and schools,
for example. The partnership
recognises the importance of
driving behaviour change in these
spaces, and through participation
in the partnership’s steering
committee, SC Johnson and
SC Johnson Professional have
supported the development of
Think Tanks to address hand
hygiene in public facilities,
workplaces and schools.
UNITING FOR UNIVERSAL
HAND HYGIENE
SC Johnson is united in its belief
in universal hand hygiene. Raising
awareness of good hand hygiene
behaviours beyond the home is
vital to breaking chains of infection,
and by raising this profile in the
countries we operate, we can also
support action across the globe.
John added: “Hand hygiene is
something that is important for all
of us – infections don’t discriminate
and, as individuals no matter where
we are, we are all susceptible.
Uniting for universal hand hygiene
means everyone practising the
same preventative measures and
looking after each other in the
same way, all around the world.
“Each of us brings one piece of
the whole – it isn’t enough for a
facility manager to simply provide
sanitiser stations, for example.
We need to be driving awareness
and best practice so that each
individual understands the part
they have to play in hand hygiene
and in helping to prevent the
spread of germs.”
PRIVATE HEALTHCARE
IS PEACE OF MIND
No matter how fit and healthy we
are, it is inevitable that at some
point in our lives we will fall ill and
need medical care. And when illness
does strike it is to the NHS that
most people will turn in seeking a
diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
The NHS has for some years been
showing signs that it, too, is not in
the best of health. A growing and
ageing population is putting an
ever-increasing strain on staff and
services. A problem exacerbated by
the coronavirus pandemic.
Reports of underfunding, a
shortage of medical staff, noisy
and overcrowded wards, cancelled
operations and long waiting times
will be familiar to everyone.
In England, hospital waiting lists
are longer than ever before, with
a total waiting list of 6.84 million
people with nearly one in eight of the
population waiting for treatment.*
This is the highest number since
records began and illustrates the
devastating impact that COVID-19
has caused the NHS.
QUICK, PRIVATE AND
CONVENIENT
Understandably, these lengthy
delays are causing additional
stress for patients, undermining
their health and quality of life even
further. How many people do you
know whose physical health and
mental well-being has deteriorated
from the anxiety of having to wait
months for a hospital appointment?
All this can be avoided by taking out
private health insurance. Seeing a
doctor in private practice used to be
only for the wealthy, but not anymore
as the cost of private medical cover
is becoming more affordable.
A private medical plan delivers
prompt access to hospital
consultants, thus avoiding lengthy
waiting lists. Patients can choose
from an extensive list of hospitals
throughout the UK; if they need to
be admitted, they will have their
own private room equipped with
TV and telephone, and visiting is
arranged to suit patient and family.
A quick, private and convenient
service that removes many of the
anxieties associated with NHS
hospital stays. Furthermore, some
providers have no upper age limit
attached to their policies and cover
can even be extended to include
family members.
TAKING CONTROL
OF YOUR HEALTHCARE
However, those interested in taking
out health insurance should not
leave it too late. As we get older
our healthcare needs increase.
Therefore, as only some of the best
health insurance companies provide
cover for pre-existing conditions, the
best time to invest in getting private
treatment for illnesses you may
suffer tomorrow – is today.
By acting now you can ensure your
future healthcare will not be dictated
by NHS bureaucracy and, just as
importantly, you will be able to benefit
from the widest possible cover.
Private health insurance cannot
guarantee good health, but it can
ensure that when you are feeling
unwell you will quickly receive the
best possible care, when and where
you want it. The peace of mind that
comes with that knowledge cannot be
underestimated and is often the most
important factor for people deciding
to take control of their healthcare
provision and "go private".
