Cashmere is hot right now

PROPERTIES IN sought-after 

Cashmere are being snapped up 

as buyers compete against each 

other to try and get a foot hold 

into the area. 

A high-end home on Crichton 

Tce was on the market for just 

two days when the auction was 

brought forward after receiving 

an acceptable pre-auction offer. 

But that acceptable 

offer was kicked 

to touch as two buyers 

fought it out and the 

modern four-bedroom, 

two-bathroom home 

finally sold for $2.050m - 

$150,000 more than the 

pre-auction offer and 

almost double its RV. 

The average property 

value in Cashmere is 

$1.09m – above the city-wide 

average of $755,000 but also 

well behind the most expensive 

suburb of Fendalton where the 

average is $1.665m, according to 

OneRoof-Valocity data.

Heazlewood, who sold the 

Crichton Tce home, said Cashmere 

was the one suburb that 

seemed to be bucking the trend 

and had had a resurgence. 

“The demand was immense 

for that property, but we are 

finding Cashmere in general 

has amazing buyer demand at 

present,” he said. 

While not the most expensive 

or exclusive suburb in Christchurch, 

he said it seems to appeal 

to people due to the good 

schooling and often impressive 

views it offered over the city. 

“Cashmere was equally elite 

to Fendalton in the 1990s and 

early 2000s and I just feel like 

the earthquakes set it back a 

lot more than Fendalton, but 

now it’s making a real charge 

and the desirability and market 

demand is just unbelievable,” 

said Hazelwood. 

“I’m like genuinely surprised 

– if somewhere is bucking the 

trend at the moment, it 

is Cashmere.”

complete with covered 

in-ground pool, which

recently sold for about $2.225m, 

whereas a large home on 

Heaton Rhodes Pl on a 1326 sq 

m section with a pool sold at 

auction earlier this month for 

$2.35m. He has also just sold a 

five-bedroom, two-bathroom 

home on Stambridge Pl for 

$1.205m after multiple bids 

were put forward.

HOW TO construct a 

suspension bridge in under 

an hour. That’s what pupils at 

Te Raekura Redcliffs School 

learned to do last week. 

A hands-on engineering 

workshop, called Bridges to 

Schools, kicked off for the first 

time in the South Island with a 

visit to the school, coupled with 

a challenge – to work in teams 

to construct a 13m long bridge. 

The workshop was created 

by the Institution of Civil 

Engineers, in collaboration with 

Fletcher Construction, to help 

inspire young people to take up 

a career in civil engineering. 

The pupils were supervised 

and worked together to build 

the finished product – a to-scale 

version of a real suspension 

bridge. 

ICE member Ruth Bullen said 

the exercise gave the pupils an 

insight into what civil engineers 

do. 

“We help give these kids 

some ideas of what it’s all about 

to hopefully inspire the next 

generation of civil engineers,” 

she said. 

Two groups of about 20 pupils 

competed to build the bridge in 

the fastest time. 

“There’s definitely a few that 

have put their hands up. We like 

to start them young and excite 

them to see where they can go 

in the future,” Bullen said.

Doyle said there are plans to 

build more kitsets so the workshop 

can be extended into more 

schools more often. 

“The real joy and our measure 

of success is just to see the joy 

on the kids’ faces,” he said. 

“We’re not just doing it 

because we want to find future 

engineers. For us, it’s just as 

much about the experience and 

the fun that the kids have.” 

A roughly even number of 

girls and boys took part in the 

exercise. 

They all asked great questions, 

said Doyle, especially the girls. 

And, for the record the second 

group finished first, but only by 

about five minutes, Doyle said. 

Both came in in under an 

hour.

Trapper committed to saving wildlife

A retired chemist, McDonald 

lives in nearby Hackthorne 

Rd and he’s been doing this 

volunteer work for the past four 

years, after his son’s scout den in 

Cashmere started getting “eaten 

alive” by rats gnawing through 

everything they could find, 

including books. 

After contacting Predator Free 

Port Hills and making a formal 

arrangement with city council 

rangers, he set up and started 

monitoring 11 traps placed 

around the reserve. 

“The scouts assembled those 

original wooden boxes and 

placed them as a map-reading 

exercise,” McDonald said. 

“I’ve caught 160 rats over four 

years and 80 of those were in the 

first year, 2019. They’ve nearly all 

been ship rats, which you can tell 

if you fold the tail over the body 

and the tail’s longer.” 

He uses American-made Victor 

traps and places them inside 

the wooden boxes. Catches are 

recorded on graphs that show 

rats are far and away the most 

common predator, along with 

a few mice, a very occasional 

hedgehog and one or two stoats. 

Using an ink card to track 

animal footprints is another way 

of monitoring the rat population 

in the reserve. 

It’s the winter months that see 

the biggest spike in catch numbers 

as there’s less natural food 

available, so they come in closer 

to where humans live. 

Perhaps due to his scientific 

background, McDonald enjoys 

recording the data and experiments 

with different types of 

food and trap placement. 

“They love the trees, it’s like a 

highway for them in here. They 

like drains and damp areas as 

well; I try and choose places that 

‘feel ratty.’ 

“I do move the traps but not 

very far because they don’t have 

a big range, it’s generally only 

around 50m.” 

Because rats are known to be 

or become shy of the boxes, at 

times he places ink cards nearby 

that creatures walk over, leaving 

their foot prints on the un-inked 

part of the card. 

“It’s another way of monitoring 

the population.” 

For bait McDonald has traditionally 

used walnuts and Nutella, 

as rats are thought to have 

a sweet tooth, but he’s currently 

trialling a ceramic bait to see if it 

is more attractive. 

McDonald is one of hundreds 

of people across Christchurch 

and Banks Peninsula who are 

helping to reduce the population 

of predators through backyard 

and community trapping. 

Their work is helping to protect 

our native bird species and 

our skinks, beetles and rare 

invertebrates.

than yourself,” said McDonald. 

“I do feel sad every time; 

they’re beautiful animals, they’re 

well adapted but they don’t 

belong in this environment and 

we brought them here so we’ve 

got to deal with it. There’s no joy 

– but there’s a certain satisfaction 

in knowing we’re going in the 

right direction.”

Karamata Intermediate pupil 

has seen her design project 

become a reality. 

On Tuesday, Ziva Bull 

received her 30th badge from 

the Science Awards Trust after 

spending weeks designing an 

activity sheet and a badge for 

the topic of epidemiology. 

There have been two students 

taking the initiative to 

design a badge since 1990, and 

Ziva was the second one. 

Sciences badges is an extra 

curricular activity by the 

trust for students from years 

7 to 10, where they choose a 

topic and work on a series of 

sciences activities in order to 

receive a badge. 

There were 29 badges covering 

a wide range of topics, 

including agriculture, home 

physics and chemistry. 

But there was no badge for 

epidemiology. 

So Ziva decided to contact 

the trust and suggested her 

idea earlier this year. She was 

then offered the opportunity 

to design the activity and a 

badge. 

After a few weeks, Ziva 

submitted her final work to 

the trust. At the time, she had 

little expectation her design 

would get approved. 

Ziva said she never expected 

to be interested in getting the 

badges, let alone designing one. 

It was not until Ziva had science 

classes with her teacher 

Ian Harrison, who she said 

made science fun, that she 

began collecting the science 

badges. Within 10 months, 

she had collected them all. 

There were times when Ziva 

would get multiple activity 

sheets to work on during the 

school holidays.

“When I first started intermediate, 

my science teacher 

made it really fun and had 

some cool experiments to do. 

So I gave the science badges a 

go and I found it really fun so 

I just kept going.” 

When she completed her 

first two badges, her dad 

Glenn thought her interest in 

the badges would fade out. 

“But it didn’t fade out and 

she just kept going. 

“We knew she really enjoyed 

(the activity) because she 

would be the first one to get 

up in the house at 5.45 in the 

morning. We would wake up 

to find she was already up, researching 

and designing stuff, 

working on stuff, analysing 

and all sort of things.” 

At the moment, Ziva is 

hoping to design more badges 

and continue exploring the 

sciences.

Athletes bound for summer games

Olympics athletics coach Bryan 

Lowson took up both coaching 

and running to support his son 

Jacob, in a sport all the family 

now embraces. 

Jacob, who is autistic, is 

competing at the Freemasons 

New Zealand Special Olympics 

National Summer Games in 

Hamilton starting today. About 

1300 athletes and coaches from 

throughout the country are competing 

in 10 sporting disciplines 

held at eight Hamilton venues. 

Along with her father, Jacob’s 

younger sister Taylor is also now 

a runner and for the past four 

years has been an assistant coach 

for the Canterbury athletics 

team. She is in her second year 

at Canterbury University and 

works at Ignition Health as a 

group instructor. Long term she 

wants to continue to work with 

athletes with disabilities. 

Running is now very much a 

family affair with Bryan, Taylor 

and Jacob recently completing 

the 22kms Port Hills Crater Rim 

Ultra trail event. 

Jacob, 21, has gone from 

strength to strength since first 

competing in athletics as a 

student at Papanui High School. 

He started by competing against 

other juniors, followed by Special 

Olympics, and now runs whenever 

he can. 

“Jacob needs someone to run 

with so as a family we are all 

very involved. I’m not the sort 

of coach who stands on the 

sidelines and yells. I like to get in 

there and run with the athletes,” 

Bryan Lowson said. 

The team trains every week at 

Burnside High School. While 

Bryan and Taylor are confident 

about many aspects of coaching, 

they enlisted the help of George 

Edwards – the long-time coach 

of William Stedman, who won a 

silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics 

– to help with some of 

the technical aspects of the sport, 

such as starting from the blocks. 

The five-person Canterbury 

athletic team includes Jacob, 

Sam Goddard, Kevin Horne, 

April Gardner and Christian 

Murphy.

are the pinnacle sports event for 

people with intellectual disabilities.

become one of the biggest sporting 

competitions in the country 

since the first national games 

were held in 1985. 

“The national games are our 

flagship event and while it was 

disappointing for our athletes, 

coaches and volunteers that we 

had to postpone the event last 

year because of the pandemic, 

the additional year has given 

everyone the opportunity to 

catch up on training, undertake 

more fundraising and planning, 

so we expect the games to be 

spectacular,” she said. 

“For many of the athletes, the 

National Summer Games is one 

of the highlights of their life, so 

we want to make sure they are 

well looked after and have a great 

experience.” 

The games will wrap up on 

Monday night with a closing 

ceremony and the disco before 

preparations start for the 2025 

National Summer Games in 

Christchurch. Mayor Phil 

Mauger will attend the closing 

ceremony.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas 

Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming 

traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make 

the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around 

everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish. 

Make a Wish Christmas Pudding 

You will need: 

• 1 ½ tbsp butter 

• 1 ½ tsp baking soda 

• 1 ½ cups of boiling water 

• 1 ½ cups flour 

• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas 

• ¾ cup sugar 

Method: 

1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl, 

melt the butter (over hot water) 

and dissolve the baking soda. 

2. Add the boiling water and 

sugar. 

3. When cool, add flour and 

mixed fruit. 

4. Stir all the ingredients together 

and make a Christmas wish. 

5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and 

allow to stand overnight. 

The next day: 

• Place mixture into a greased 

bowl or ice-cream container, 

cover with tinfoil and place in a 

pot of water, just deep enough 

so the bowl doesn’t float. 

• Boil pudding for four hours and 

check regularly to make sure 

the water has boiled dry. Top 

up carefully with extra water if 

required. 

• Serve with heaps of Chantilly 

cream!

• 1 x bottle of cream 

• ½ tsp vanilla essence 

• 1 tbsp icing sugar to 

sweeten 

Method: 

Put cream, vanilla essence 

and icing sugar in a bowl and 

whisk until light and fluffy with 

softly formed peaks. Cover and 

refrigerate until ready to serve.

ended the school year on a high note 

after winning big at an annual kapa haka 

festival. 

The school came first overall in the 

primary category for the Tūhono Kapa 

Haka Festival, which saw 35 primary 

schools from across the city performing 

a choral, an action song and a haka at the 

town hall. 

It was also awarded best female 

whakamihi, best soloist/small group 

singers, best waiata tira (whole group 

choral) and best waiata-ā-ringa (whole 

group action song).

Outstanding Pool category at the 2022 New Zealand Recreation Awards.

TE POU Toetoe: Linwood Pool has been 

recognised for its focus on minimising 

barriers and encouraging diversity after a 

year of operations. 

Innovative design and a community-led 

approach were key factors to the city’s 

newest pool winning the Outstanding 

Pool category at the 2022 New Zealand 

Recreation Awards. 

The awards are presented across 11 

categories and acknowledge the value 

recreation brings to communities. 

City council head of recreation, sport 

and events Nigel Cox said the pool was 

community-led from the start and the city 

council had worked hard to reflect that in 

the design. 

“The community-led approach at Te 

Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool has been very 

successful. It’s an example of working 

closely with the community through the 

planning and design phase to deliver great 

outcomes. 

“A majority of participants are from the 

local area and it has a real community 

feel and that’s what we want to achieve 

with each community pool. Receiving 

the Outstanding Pool Award for Te 

Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool is great 

recognition.” 

The pool features New Zealand’s first 

purpose-built, all-season indoor manu 

(dive) pool, which has proven a major 

drawcard, especially for children and 

young people.
