Karamata Intermediate pupil<br />
has seen her design project<br />
become a reality.<br />
On Tuesday, Ziva Bull<br />
received her 30th badge from<br />
the Science Awards Trust after<br />
spending weeks designing an<br />
activity sheet and a badge for<br />
the topic of epidemiology.<br />
There have been two students<br />
taking the initiative to<br />
design a badge since 1990, and<br />
Ziva was the second one.<br />
Sciences badges is an extra<br />
curricular activity by the<br />
trust for students from years<br />
7 to 10, where they choose a<br />
topic and work on a series of<br />
sciences activities in order to<br />
receive a badge.<br />
There were 29 badges covering<br />
a wide range of topics,<br />
including agriculture, home<br />
physics and chemistry.<br />
But there was no badge for<br />
epidemiology.<br />
So Ziva decided to contact<br />
the trust and suggested her<br />
idea earlier this year. She was<br />
then offered the opportunity<br />
to design the activity and a<br />
badge.<br />
After a few weeks, Ziva<br />
submitted her final work to<br />
the trust. At the time, she had<br />
little expectation her design<br />
would get approved.<br />
Ziva said she never expected<br />
to be interested in getting the<br />
badges, let alone designing one.<br />
It was not until Ziva had science<br />
classes with her teacher<br />
Ian Harrison, who she said<br />
made science fun, that she<br />
began collecting the science<br />
badges. Within 10 months,<br />
she had collected them all.<br />
There were times when Ziva<br />
would get multiple activity<br />
sheets to work on during the<br />
school holidays.<br />

months, including<br />
designing one for<br />
epidemiology.<br />
“When I first started intermediate,<br />
my science teacher<br />
made it really fun and had<br />
some cool experiments to do.<br />
So I gave the science badges a<br />
go and I found it really fun so<br />
I just kept going.”<br />
When she completed her<br />
first two badges, her dad<br />
Glenn thought her interest in<br />
the badges would fade out.<br />
“But it didn’t fade out and<br />
she just kept going.<br />
“We knew she really enjoyed<br />
(the activity) because she<br />
would be the first one to get<br />
up in the house at 5.45 in the<br />
morning. We would wake up<br />
to find she was already up, researching<br />
and designing stuff,<br />
working on stuff, analysing<br />
and all sort of things.”<br />
At the moment, Ziva is<br />
hoping to design more badges<br />
and continue exploring the<br />
sciences.<br />
