Venice Carnevale
Move over Pancake Day! Carnevale (which roughly translates as ‘farewell to meat’)
takes place before the start of Lent each year. Wander the corners of Venice and
get swept up in the festivities of this world-famous event. Think elaborate masks,
grand balls, and gondola parades along the Grand Canal.
Il Palio di Siena
Held twice yearly during the summer in the gorgeous Tuscan town of Siena, Il Palio
di Siena is more than just a horse race. As featured in the James Bond film Quantum
of Solace, this is a celebration of a centuries-old apparition of the Virgin Mary, as
vibrant, bareback riders descend upon the medieval square, Piazza del Campo.
Ravello music festival
Running throughout the months of July and August, this festival of music and arts
was originally a tribute to Wagner, following his visit to the town in the 19th century.
Today, it’s a time-perfected tradition with a programme of jazz, art shows, dance,
photography and classical concerts. They all take place in different venues around
Ravello including the open-air stage at the cliffside of Villa Rufolo, making it a truly
unique experience with spectacular views of the Amalfi Coast.
