Welcome 

Well, where did 2022 go? And what can we expect 

from 2023? 

It would be far too easy to highlight the global, 

national, and local challenges that we all faced 

last year. What is certain is that our amazing 

industry will continue to face significant headwinds 

throughout 2023. It’s therefore more important 

than ever that we continue to use this platform to 

communicate and provide industry-winning offers, 

deals, and advice. 

We are looking to help our customers get Anthem 

on consumers’ lips and are offering up a buy one, 

get one free deal with a tailor-made collector kit 

to support your customers and encourage repeat 

visits to your outlets. In addition, there’s premium 

POS available for the Six Nations when you 

purchase our flagship ale, Tribute. 

This month we meet Neil Curnow from our Sales 

Support team. As well as providing support to 

customers in the northern part of our region, Neil 

is a prolific fundraiser and recently completed 

his 1851 challenges running 18.51 miles along the 

coastal path from The Ship Inn, Mousehole, to 

the Old Success Inn, Sennen Cove. In doing so, 

he raised over £600 for the St Austell Brewery 

Charitable Trust. 

We will also be sharing more news on our 

investment in Harbour Brewing Co., where we 

have become a minority shareholder. This exciting 

development will provide you with access to some 

of the region’s best-loved craft beers. As always if

for the brewery / telesales? 

I have worked at St Austell Brewery for seven 

years. Before joining Free Trade Support, I 

worked in Telesales looking after North and 

Central Somerset. 

What made you want to work for the 

brewery? 

I love beer! I’ve always been very passionate 

about the St Austell Brewery brands, and I was 

excited to work for a local company with an 

excellent reputation. 

How many customers do you call daily / 

weekly? 

It really can vary from day to day. I look after 

new accounts for the first 11 weeks, which 

means we have a smaller diary.

What do you enjoy most about your job? 

I enjoy talking with suppliers and learning 

about the provenance and history of the 

brands that we stock. I’m fascinated by brands 

steeped in history like Plymouth Gin. The best 

bit though is tasting them! 

Do you live close to work? 

I live in a village called St Newlyn East which is 

between Newquay and Truro. 

What is your favourite drink? 

I don’t really have a favourite drink. It can vary 

from a pint of Thatchers Gold on a hot day to a 

pint of Mena Dhu in cooler temperatures. I’m 

also partial to the occasional mojito! 

What is your favourite St Austell Brewery 

beer and why? 

Lansdown is a real treat for IPA lovers like 

myself.

Has there been a memorable time / 

conversation with a particular customer? 

I always remember the times when customers 

tell me they have had surprise celebrity visitors 

in the venue such as Miley Cyrus and Nicholas 

Cage. I also remember a conversation with 

a chap who I know quite well who spent 20 

minutes trying to find his glasses only to find 

out they were on his head (sorry Roy).

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at 

work? 

I’m quite a sporty guy despite being slow and 

slightly overweight. I play cricket, football, 

squash, and tennis. I also have two dogs, so I 

do a lot of walking on the coast path.

Combine the ingredients within a mug 

and top with hot water then garnish

Ginger Syrup Recipe 

Peel a thumb-sized piece of ginger 

and blend to a pulp in a food 

processor. Stir the juice of the pulp into 

an equal volume of golden syrup until 

combined into a golden ginger syrup.

The Gin Berry Fizz is a perfect addition to your 

cocktail repertoire. 

Ingredients 

1-part Chambord 

1-part pink gin (or gin of your choice) 

4-part lemonade 

Garnish with fig slices and sprig of thyme 

Method 

Simply take a wine glass and add Chambord and 

a pink gin (or any gin) of your choice. 

Then add ice and fresh lemonade to top it off.

45ml Absolut Vanilla 

25 ml Passion fruit purée 

15 ml vanilla syrup 

1 pineapple slice 

1 half passion fruit 

Method 

Muddle one slice of pineapple in a 

shaker. Add Absolut Vanilla, passion 

fruit pulp from half a passion fruit, 

vanilla syrup, and passion fruit purée. 

Shake and double strain into a chilled 

cocktail glass. Garnish with the half 

passion fruit floating. Serve with a shot 

of Champagne. 

Tarquin’s Cornish 

Strawberry Fields 

Ingredients 

15 ml Cornish Pastis 

25 ml Tarquin’s Cornish Gin 

10 ml elderflower syrup 

10 ml lemon juice 

25 ml soda water 

2 fresh strawberries (sliced) 

Method 

Place the Pastis, gin, elderflower and 

lemon in a wine glass. Add a few 

blocks of ice and 4 slices of strawberry. 

Stir for about 30 seconds. Fill the glass 

with ice, top with soda water & garnish 

with a few more slices of strawberry. 


Bombay Bramble 

This simple twist on the modern classic beautifully demonstrates the inherent fruit 

flavours found at the heart of Bombay Bramble. 

Ingredients 

50ml Bombay Bramble 

25 ml fresh lemon juice 

12.5ml sugar syrup 

garnish: Fresh lemon wedge, 

blackberries and thyme sprig.

The Pub, our original social network, 

has been bringing people together and 

forming bonds for hundreds of years. 

Alcohol itself has been the basis of social 

occasions for even longer, from the very 

first festivities in ancient Egypt, to the 

most modern of cocktail experiences 

today. But things are changing. We are a 

population that is more conscious of our 

health and well-being than ever before 

and, as a result, we’ve seen an explosion 

in the low and no alcohol category. 

Did you know that 55% of consumers say they 

are looking to reduce their alcohol intake in the 

next year? And, with almost one in three pub 

visits now alcohol free, and 37% of consumers 

drinking alcohol free at home, at least once 

a week, no and low has never been a more 

important part of a drinks’ range. 

January and February are traditionally 

important months for the no and low category 

as consumers look to recover from the 

hedonism and overindulgence of the festive 

period. Positively, ‘Dry January’ in 2023 is set to 

continue to grow as awareness of moderation 

is at an all-time high with 95% of consumers 

aware of the category - up from 86% just two 

years ago. But making a no or low choice is 

no longer just about ‘Dry January’ or ‘Sober 

October’, we are seeing month-on-month 

growth across the year, highlighting a marked 

change in consumer behaviour within our 

industry. 

Boosting Turnover 

So why is this important? Ensuring that you’re 

meeting the needs of your customers by 

offering no and low beer and cider choices will 

help encourage them to trade up from default 

soft drink and tap water options, helping to 

boost turnover. 

Visibility 

Discovery is key. Over half (54%) of consumers 

surveyed stated that having no and low brands 

visible behind the bar would help improve their 

understanding of availability. With the majority 

of no and low being packaged (can or bottle), 

giving the brands prominent shelf space in a 

central chiller is a great start. Consumers are 

also most likely to order a non-alcoholic drink 

on specific food-led occasions, such as a family 

meal with young children or at lunchtime. 

Having no and low options visible at the 

point of food ordering is another vital way to 

encouraging trade up; think about getting the 

brand options prominently listed on menus and 

specials boards. 

To Summarise 

1. Almost one in three visits to the pub are now 

alcohol free. 

2. 55% of people are looking to reduce their 

alcohol consumption over the next 12 

months. 

3. Whilst January and October are important 

months for the category, no and low is in 

growth all year round. 

4. Awareness of the no and low category has

more money trading people up to

There is a growing thirst in the UK for low abv and 

alcohol-free drinks. New research commissioned by 

low-abv brewer Lucky Saint shows that nearly a third of 

pub visits in the UK are now completely alcohol-free.

This moderation trend, pushed into the spotlight by annual wellness movements such as Sober 

October and Dry January, is largely being driven by younger consumers; choosing to reduce 

alcohol intake rises to as high as 65% in Gen-Z drinkers between the ages of 18 and 24. 

It’s now more important than ever for pubs to be offering low and no-alcohol options to 

consumers. The new industry report, which took data from a nationally representative sample of 

500 UK adults over the age of 18, shows that the trend is on the rise, with more than half (55%) of 

adults stating that they wish to reduce their alcohol intake, versus 32% in 2021 and 40% of adults in 

the previous year.

What I’m drinking... 

Having just received a leg of lamb, which 

was hand-reared by my colleague James 

from his small holding in Wiltshire, I 

was so exciting to dive into our portfolio 

and pick something out a little special - 

Château Sergant Lalande-de-Pomerol was 

my choice and it really did not disappoint! 

I love to stray off the beaten track and 

find wines that are from the lesser-known 

regions – even somewhere like Bordeaux 

you can find some gems that represent 

exceptional value for money. Lalande-de- 

Pomerol is a satellite region just north of 

Pomerol, and is a region that I always keep 

my eye on for these types of wines. 

After decanting this beautiful wine, I 

shared and drank it with the family over 

our Sunday roast. The wine was powerful, 

well-structured, and full of fresh notes of 

raspberries and blackberry jam. Vanilla 

and spice followed and a depth of flavour 

evoked hints of chocolate, smoke, and 

caramel, offering a lovely savoury nature.

Burgundy 

Burgundy: a name synonymous 

with exceptional, world-famous 

wines and a region that’s a wine 

lover’s paradise. 

Chablis Patrairche Pere et Fils

on the nose. Fresh and elegant on the palate with a lovely length. Rich

Burgundy’s most northern region of 

Chablis is located two hours southeast 

of Paris, with Beanue, Burgundy’s 

epicentre, located a further hour and a 

half south-east. Covering six key growing 

areas, Burgundy is home to the two grape 

varieties that arguably make the most 

famed wines in the world: Chardonnay and 

Pinot Noir. 

In early October, we were fortunate to spend 

two days in Beaune, hosted by Patriarche Père 

et Fils, one of Burgundy’s oldest and most 

respected negociants and home to Europe’s 

largest underground cellar, which stretches 

for five kilometres and houses three-million 

bottles (enough wine to fill an Olympic-sized 

swimming pool!) 

We were treated to a sensational line-up and 

in-depth tasting in the cellars of Patriarche 

Père et Fils, introduced by the knowledgeable 

and charismatic Pierre Manein and Etienne 

Chavanel. A vinous journey through 24 wines 

from Chablis down to Beaujolais demonstrated 

the intricoes of each cru and, most remarkably, 

showed how different one cru can be from the 

next, even when the vines are separated by just 

a few meters. This emphasised that, 200 million 

years in the making, Burgundy’s mille feuille of 

geological layers is key to the complexity and 

diversity of the regions terroir and resulting 

wines. 

A drive through the Côtes de Nuits and Côtes 

de Beaune really brought to life the differences 

in not only the terroirs but also how the climate 

can change in such a short distance. Whilst 

the harvest had come to an end, there were 

still some grapes left on the vines; those that 

hadn’t quite come up to scratch but enabled 

wine-loving travellers the opportunity to taste 

some Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in their 

purest form. 

With the largest number of restaurants 

(approximately 70) to the number of 

inhabitants (around 20,000), Beaune is a 

gastronomic haven, and we highly recommend 

trying Oeuffs en Murette (egg poached in red 

wine). The Hospice de Beaune is well worth 

the €11 entrance fee and the remains of the 

ramparts that circle the town make for a great 

way to explore the history behind Beaune. 

Surrounded by an array of bistros and bars, the 

cobbled main square of Place Carnot makes for 

the perfect spot to watch the world go by, glass 

of wine in hand. For any cheese lover, a trip to 

Beaune wouldn’t be complete without a visit to 

the Alain Hess Cheese Shop. 

Be sure to sample some Epoisses, made in the 

town of the same name halfway between Dijon 

and Auxerre, along with a vast array of other 

local cheeses. 

Our trip to Burgundy was an educational 

revelation. What really shone through was what 

a key part the terroir plays in how the wine 

tastes and seeing first-hand the sheer passion 

that exudes from the farmers and vignerons. 

Patriarche Père et Fils Chablis 

Located near Auxerre in the department of 

Yonne, Chablis is almost a region of its own, 

being separated from the next vineyards of 

Burgundy by 130 kilometres. Chablis is famed 

for its kimmeridgian limestone, formed some 

150 million years ago from tiny, fossilised oyster 

shells, reminding us that Burgundy once lay 

beneath a warm ocean and that this influence 

is what shines through in the wines today. 

Patriarche Père et Fils Chablis exhibits a paleyellow 

hue with lemon and mineral notes on 

the nose. Fresh and elegant on the palate with 

a lovely rich and harmonious finish. 


Sauvignon 

blanc 

Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most popular white wines in the world with 

reports showing that plantings of the grape have more than doubled in the 

years between 2000 and 2020. It is unmistakably aromatic, but you’d be 

wrong if you thought all Sauvignon Blancs tasted the same. 


Sauvignon Blanc originated in the Loire valley in France where some of the most famous and 

expensive iterations are produced, this Pouilly Fume is a fantastic example of this French style, it is 

more delicate than the new world wines with aromas of elderflower, green apple, delicate green 

notes and ripe lemon and it’s a fabulous match for goats’ cheese. 

These two South African Sauvignons sits somewhere in between the punchier Marlborough 

Sauvignons and the more subtle French styles, with bright, vibrant citrus and peach notes. They 

are perfect for sipping on their own or with light dishes such as a tomato salad.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region of France is not only home to a breathtaking coastline, amazing 

architecture, and some of the best French cuisine, but it also produces versatile, great quality wines. 

At a snip of their price, we have two such wines from this bountiful region, Voyage des Animaux 

Chardonnay and the Abbaye St Hilaire Provence rosé. 

Introducing you to the enticing Patache d’Aux from Bordeaux. This wine estate is named after 

the stagecoach that once stopped just outside the chateau. Soft smooth tannins, dark fruits, oaky 

notes, and a long harmonious finish sum this wine up. Enjoy with hearty fare. 

We have two delicious Burgundian wines for you to try. From the cool climate of Chablis in the

Fine wines

Whilst many are considering embarking on 

a month of abstention, I always find that 

January is a miserable enough month as it is 

with cold bleak weather and an unhealthylooking 

bank balance without further 

compounding it by cutting out one of life’s 

great pleasures! 

I commend those taking an 

uncompromising approach in the interest 

of health but for me, ‘drink less but drink 

better’ strikes me as an entirely more 

appealing option. I hope you will join me in 

celebrating the arrival of 2023 with these 

three fantastic fine wines. 


Marques de Murrieta Gran

inTuscany... 

In October this year, two of our Wine Development Mangers spent a couple days in the 

beautiful rolling hills of Tuscany. On the agenda, visiting two of our Tuscan producers – 

Castello D’Albola in Chianti, and Rocca de Montemassi located to the south-west of the 

region. 

We experienced some of Tuscany’s finest wines, tasting the flagship reds the region is 

famous for, stunning white wines in varying styles, and some elegant sweet wines. All 

accompanied by stunning traditional Tuscan food and educated by very knowledge and 

hospitable winery assistants.

The medieval village of Castello di Albola 

sits atop the splendid Chianti hills, in a 

location incomparable for its historical 

appeal, evocative art and the unique agrolandscape 

of unparalleled harmony. The 

Winery consists of multiple underground 

cellars, restaurant, shop, accommodation 

and the family home where the owners like 

to spend their summers. 

Whilst tasting across old vintages, single 

vineyard styles and some fabulous Vin 

Santo dessert wine (in a jeroboam format!), 

the highlight was their Chianti Classico 

DOCG. This wine really highlights a true 

expression of Chianti, showcasing the 

elegance and finesse that the region’s wine 

can offer. Ruby-red in colour, this wine 

is bursting with notes of strawberry, red 

berries, sage and spice cake on the nose. 

The mouth is lively with cherry and exotic 

spice tones leaving a delicate finish. 

Our second winery, Rocca di Montemassi, 

has an incredible focus on sustainable 

farming. This is where the first Tuscan Wine 

Farm was born, a new model based on the 

principles of environmental, ethical and 

economic sustainability. From full bodied 

viognier whites to elegant syrah rosé, the 

food and wine matching at the winery was 

one of the trips highlights. 

Three wines stood out above the rest: 

Rocca di Montemassi 

A great Tuscan red and their highest 

interpretation of the Rocca di Montemassi 

terroir. Intense and evolved with notes 

of black fruit, undergrowth and hints of 

tobacco on the nose, with concentrated 

and seductive hints of spice and a perfect 

balance on the palate. The finish is long 

and persistent. 

Calasole Vermentino 

Calasole, meaning ‘sunset’, was a truly 

fitting name for this wine. Designed to be 

drunk when dining alfresco, with family 

and friends, this wine was the group 

favourite. Intense hints of white flowers 

with fresh notes of rennet apple, citrus and 

aromatic herbs. Consistent and fresh, with 

citrus characters and mineral and almond 

notes throughout. 

Tuscany is a special place. With producers 

like Castello di Albola and Rocca di 

Montemassi focussing on sustainable 

winemaking, farming, and attention to 

detail for the consumer, wines from the 

region are in a fantastic, exciting place for 

the future.
