Glossary<br />

Nuclear scintigraphy — The production of two-dimensional<br />

images of the distribution of radioactivity in tissues after the<br />

internal administr<strong>at</strong>ion of radionucleotide, the images being<br />

obtained by a scintill<strong>at</strong>ion camera.<br />

Opioids — Any synthetic narcotic th<strong>at</strong> has opi<strong>at</strong>e-like activities<br />

but is not derived from opium. Denoting n<strong>at</strong>urally occurring<br />

peptides, e.g., enkephalins, th<strong>at</strong> exert opi<strong>at</strong>e-like effects by<br />

interacting with opi<strong>at</strong>e receptors of cell membranes.<br />

Orchitis — Inflamm<strong>at</strong>ion of the testis.<br />

Paraphimosis — Retraction of phimotic foreskin, causing a<br />

painful swelling of the glans and the inability to retract the<br />

penis.<br />

Parasymp<strong>at</strong>hetic nervous system — The part of the autonomic<br />

nervous system th<strong>at</strong> controls unconscious bodily<br />

functions such as digestion,urin<strong>at</strong>ion,and defec<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Pituitary gland — A gland <strong>at</strong> the base of the brain th<strong>at</strong> regul<strong>at</strong>es<br />

the secretion of hormones.<br />

Prostaglandin — Any of a group of components derived from<br />

arachidonic acid, via the cyclooxygenase p<strong>at</strong>hway, th<strong>at</strong> are<br />

extremely potent medi<strong>at</strong>ors of a diverse group of physiologic<br />

process,especially inflamm<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Pylorus — The last portion of the stomach, surrounded by a<br />

strong band of circular muscle and through which the<br />

stomach contents are emptied into the duodenum.<br />

Pyometra — An accumul<strong>at</strong>ion of pus in the uterus.<br />

Qi — The force or energy th<strong>at</strong> controls harmony in the body.<br />

Ringbone — A bony growth involving the first or second<br />

phalanx of the foot, resulting in lameness if the articular surfaces<br />

are affected.<br />

Serapin — An aqueous solution from the pitcher plant<br />

(Sarraceniaceae) th<strong>at</strong> selectively blocks the C fibers th<strong>at</strong><br />

carry pain sens<strong>at</strong>ion in peripheral nerves.<br />

Sidebone — A condition of horses marked by ossific<strong>at</strong>ion of the<br />

l<strong>at</strong>eral cartilages of the third phalanx of the foot.<br />
