Glossary
Nuclear scintigraphy — The production of two-dimensional
images of the distribution of radioactivity in tissues after the
internal administration of radionucleotide, the images being
obtained by a scintillation camera.
Opioids — Any synthetic narcotic that has opiate-like activities
but is not derived from opium. Denoting naturally occurring
peptides, e.g., enkephalins, that exert opiate-like effects by
interacting with opiate receptors of cell membranes.
Orchitis — Inflammation of the testis.
Paraphimosis — Retraction of phimotic foreskin, causing a
painful swelling of the glans and the inability to retract the
penis.
Parasympathetic nervous system — The part of the autonomic
nervous system that controls unconscious bodily
functions such as digestion,urination,and defecation.
Pituitary gland — A gland at the base of the brain that regulates
the secretion of hormones.
Prostaglandin — Any of a group of components derived from
arachidonic acid, via the cyclooxygenase pathway, that are
extremely potent mediators of a diverse group of physiologic
process,especially inflammation.
Pylorus — The last portion of the stomach, surrounded by a
strong band of circular muscle and through which the
stomach contents are emptied into the duodenum.
Pyometra — An accumulation of pus in the uterus.
Qi — The force or energy that controls harmony in the body.
Ringbone — A bony growth involving the first or second
phalanx of the foot, resulting in lameness if the articular surfaces
are affected.
Serapin — An aqueous solution from the pitcher plant
(Sarraceniaceae) that selectively blocks the C fibers that
carry pain sensation in peripheral nerves.
Sidebone — A condition of horses marked by ossification of the
lateral cartilages of the third phalanx of the foot.
