Introduction
To be honest, the course was a lot more than I bargained
for. My clients were not happy that I was gone for a week at
a time during several months. The course included a practical
examination and a written examination that encompassed
small-animal information as well as information about
birds and cows. I then realized how much I had forgotten
about those other species. Also required were a written case
report and a number of hours under the supervision of a certified
acupuncturist. This meant more time away from a busy
practice. Having said all of that, being a certified acupuncturist
has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
Watching an animal that has not responded to any other form
of therapy improve with acupuncture is amazing. Also, introducing
people to a different and miraculous medical approach
is very satisfying. My hope is this book will contribute
to a deeper understanding and acceptance of
acupuncture in the Western point of view.
I am extraordinarily lucky to be part of Hagyard-Davidson-
McGee, PSC. This first-class equine veterinary practice is the
largest of its kind in the world. Presently the practice comprises
39 equine veterinarians. Almost every one of them has
referred cases to me for acupuncture. I’ve been provided the
opportunity to work on horses with unusual diseases and to
learn more and more every day about the advantages, as well
as the disadvantages, of acupuncture. I would not have been
able to compose this manuscript without their support. My
clients have also contributed to this book by allowing me to
use acupuncture on their horses. I have immensely enjoyed
introducing acupuncture to them and genuinely appreciate
their interest.
Most of the cases I am asked to work on have not responded
to Western medicine. The client or referring veterinarian
is using acupuncture as a last resort. Therefore, a lot of the
cases are very advanced. The fact that acupuncture is effective
on most of these advanced cases is a credit to the
therapy. I hope that the information presented in this book
