A walk is an awesome way to spend time together as a family, get some exercise and learn about nature. Here are the city council’s top five toddler-friendly walks from around the city •Ernle Clark River Walk Time: 20 minutes return, buggy-friendly. Features: Big trees, Ōpāwaho/Heathcote River, swans and ducks. Start at Ernlea Tce, opposite the South Library off Colombo St, and follow the river through Ernle Clark Reserve. For a slightly longer walk carry on to the Cashmere Playground (30 minutes return). •Sister City Gardens Time: From 15 minutes to one hour, you decide. Features: Flowers, bridges, sculptures and art. Start at Halswell Quarry Park where you can take several short 15-minute walks exploring the Sister City gardens or wandering beside the ponds. These tracks can also be linked up for a longer walk (about one hour). Some tracks are suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. •Coastal Path Lyttelton Time: 20 minutes one way. Some parts might be challenging for buggies. Don’t forget to pack togs for a swim. Features: Beaches and bays, pirate playground. Start from outside the white gate at 7 Park Tce in Lyttelton. Follow a wide, well-formed track along the coastline above the shore. You can take a connecting path (5 minutes) to drop down to explore Magazine Bay. From here the track passes through regenerating forest and pine trees before dropping down to the shore at Corsair Bay, a popular swimming and picnic spot. There are toilets and drinking fountains there, and a pirate-themed playground near the car park. •Travis Wetland Observation Tower Time: 10 minutes return. Features: A cool tower, wetland, lots of birds (you might see one of the big, beautiful Royal Spoonbills which have started nesting there). It’s also a Kiwi Guardian site. Start at Clarevale Reserve Playground, off Clarevale St. Follow the path towards Travis Wetland. Turn left to reach the observation tower. For a longer walk, turn right to go to the bird hide (30 minutes return). •Riccarton Bush Time: 40 minutes return and child-friendly, this is a good one to do on a hot, sunny day as the trees provide a bit of shade. Features: Massive native trees, mysterious native forest, streams, Kiwi Guardian site. Riccarton Bush is the only area of podocarp forest remaining in Christchurch and includes a magnificent stand of towering kahikatea. The track is buggy friendly and loops through the shady forest beyond the predator-free gate. Thursday January 12 2023 3 Imitation firearms can cause damage – police • From page 1 On New Year’s day, someone reported a slug pellet or something similar flew past them as they drove down State Highway 74, near Mulberry Place in Redwood. A police spokesperson said limited lines of inquiry meant the investigation faltered. “If anyone does have any information that may help police, they are asked to get in touch,” the spokesperson said. Based on recent statistics, police understand there has not been any notable increase in imitation firearm incidents in the Christchurch area. “However, police would like to remind people to take extra care and note that imitation firearms can cause damage when used inappropriately,” a spokesperson said. – NZ Herald ‘It’s a very traumatic time for those families’ • From page 1 George said he received $1000 as part of the deal when he moved into Ngaio Marsh and decided he would like to convert it into food for the refuge. A visit this month to the Stanmore Rd New World supermarket saw him pick up $800 of meat and $200 of frozen vegetables. The produce was handed over to Johnson, the manager for Te Whare Hauora, and Tauhiri, a residential and community worker, to use over the holiday period. Johnson said the food donation went far, particularly during the festive season and new year, when families are under pressure. “This food went straight into our safe house. So families that come in, sometimes in the middle of the night, they don’t have anything. “They’re standing up in what they’ve got pretty much – it’s a very traumatic time for those families,” Johnson said. “To be able to put food on the table and make sure there’s a warm, safe space for them to go and that they’ve got food in their belly is our main objective for these whanau referred to our safe house.” Once families are settled, the refuge team members work with individual women and their tamariki to prioritise their needs and help them achieve what they want. The work includes navigating legal systems and applying for protection orders, custody orders and tenancy orders. They also liaise with early childhood education centres or schools. “Whatever the need is we are there to support them,” Johnson said. Te Whare Hauora, is an independent refuge contracted to provide Government-funded refuge services in Christchurch.
