SWIMMING, A
LIFE CHANGING
SPORT
By Valenna Gonzalez
Do you know if swimming has some kind
of relationship with the not so
well-known Marfan Syndrome? Maybe
this question seems a bit strange to you,
but before knowing the relationship
between these two, it is important to
know the origins of swimming.
This sport is ancient, there is evidence of
this through cave paintings that are more
than 7000 years old. Also this sport is
mentioned in books from later times such
as the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Bible
among others. For hominids, swimming
was an essential practice to obtain raw
material and for ancient civilizations this
sport began to be considered as
something recreational and important,
since they said that if people did not
know how to swim, they were illiterate.
In fact, swimming consists of movement
through a body of water, using the
strength of the arms and legs in multiple
styles such as free, backstroke,
breaststroke, and butterfly. This sport
can be practiced in pools from 25 to 1500
meters. Swimming can help us lose a
large number of calories depending on
the weight and diet of each person.
Therefore, a person who weighs 70 kg in
half an hour of swimming could burn
around 233 calories. Swimming is a sport
that can be both competitive and
recreational and its practice provides the
swimmer's respiratory and circulatory
system with many benefits. For those
who practice it, it benefits the heart and
lungs, as well as joints such as the neck,
shoulders, and pelvis.
A curious fact about swimming is
related with Michael Phelps, who has
been helped by this sport. He has a
syndrome called "Marfan
Syndrome", which has caused the
athlete to have long limbs. They have
given him an advantage when
performing competitively in the
sport. It has also made him one of the
most recognized swimmers in
history. People with this syndrome
are affected in important parts of the
body such as the heart; for this
reason, they should choose to do
low-risk, low-intensity and aerobic
movement activities. Swimming is
one of the most recommended
sports for this.
In summary, swimming can be very
effective and beneficial for healthy
people as well as for people who
have serious illnesses since it is a
sport that does not require very
forced movements and can be a very
relaxing activity. It also helps motor
development and improves the
resistance of our body, thus
improving our quality of life
completely. It is recommended to
pursue this sport because it helps
people to improve their health and
their body.
