Your health with a
new beginning
By Dayanna Gómez
Do you know what is meant by
physical fitness? Does it have any
relation to genetic disorders? To
begin with, it is important to know
what the World Health
Organization says about physical
fitness. This organization states
that physical fitness is the result of
any type of physical activity as any
displacement of the body produced
by skeletal muscles, with the
consequent consumption of energy.
Individuals with an insufficient
degree of physical activity possess a
20% to 30% greater danger of death
compared to individuals who
achieve a sufficient degree of
physical activity.
But you may wonder how physical
fitness is related to Marfan
syndrome. Yes, physical fitness has a
lot to do with Marfan syndrome, as
it has many beneficial effects, such
as lowering blood pressure and
strengthening the cardiovascular
system. It also contributes to weight
reduction, regulation of metabolism
and digestive function.
But in Marfan syndrome, physical activity
should not be of high impact. Exercises
should be regulated depending on the
heart rate, weight or intense effort should
be avoided. If the aorta is not dilated,
higher intensity activities can be done.
Similarly, a series of prior considerations
should not be forgotten before performing
physical exercise such as avoiding
competitive activities, activities that
involve much effort in the joints.

with high aerobic element and low
magnitude as is the case of cycling,
swimming, hiking, fishing, Tai Chi, golf or

Something important to note is the case of
Michael Phelps, in whom this syndrome
has been of great help, since it has given
him a great advantage when competing as
his limbs have a long extension. For
example, the length of his arms when
placed horizontally was 206 centimeters;
this is 12 centimeters longer than his
height. Therefore, we deduce that, in the
case of this athlete, this syndrome has not
been an impediment to his career, but
rather has been a support and a virtue at
the time of swimming.

In conclusion, being physically active can
improve your brain health, help manage
weight, reduce the risk of disease,
strengthen bones and muscles, and
improve your ability to do everyday
activities. But individuals with Marfan
syndrome, should exercise regularly
through low-intensity (aerobic),
low-impact activities adapted to meet
their specific needs
