USING ‘ICE BATHS’ to aid post training<br />
body recovery has been around the upper<br />
echelons of the sporting world for more<br />
than a decade, with the Wallabies using it<br />
in 2013.<br />
Now the Kirwee rugby club is adding<br />
this style of cold water immersion to its<br />
routine. It recently put out an appeal on<br />
social media for someone to donate ‘an<br />
old chest freezer, plastic tub or large old<br />
bath’.<br />
The club’s call was answered within a<br />
couple of days.<br />
Club captain Curt Freeman said he<br />
appreciated the generous offers the club<br />
received.<br />
“Our community is second to none;<br />
within about an hour I had half a dozen<br />
baths and three or four different freezers.”<br />
He is unsure if the club will be able to<br />
use all of what they’ve been offered.<br />
“We’re just working through whether<br />
we’re going to take a freezer and build a bit<br />
of a cage around it, or if we’re going to get<br />
two baths and build cradles for them,” he<br />
said.<br />
The club will make the baths or freezer<br />
available for mainly colts and division two<br />
and three players, but if junior grades want<br />
to use them as well they could.<br />

Freeman said rapidly cooling muscles<br />
after training is a tried and true method of<br />
injury prevention.<br />
“Its proven recovery for contact sports<br />
and sports injuries, with player welfare<br />
being a big part of rugby at the moment<br />
especially with the Canterbury Union,”<br />
he said.<br />
