Rangiora Showgrounds this Sat Jan 28th - Sun Jan 29th<br />
For some reason the <strong>Selwyn</strong> district and<br />
Ashburton seem to be a real “hot bed” for<br />
classic cars and hot rods. Large numbers<br />
of enthusiasts from these areas come to<br />
Rangiora’s Muscle Car Madness each year.<br />
This year will be the 33rd year of<br />
this ‘mammoth’ event. We have cars<br />
coming from all over the country as far as<br />
Northland and Waiheke island. Another<br />
large group is coming from Wairoa in the<br />
Hawkes Bay.<br />
Pete Schimanski returns this year<br />
with another car from his collection, an<br />
extremely wild, street legal early Holden<br />
Monaro. Matt Elliot is bringing his<br />
Chevrolet C10 pickup, it sits on the ground<br />
and is one of the top trucks in the country.<br />
Phil Dunstan will have his remarkable<br />
classic caravan on display, certainly one of<br />
the most detailed and creative art works to<br />
ever be seen. All the way at the other end<br />
of the spectrum is Morris 1100 powered by<br />
a supercharged 383 Chevrolet engine.<br />
The burnouts will also be a spectacle,<br />
not to be missed. The finals were cancelled<br />
due to weather last year so there is a lot<br />
of unfinished business! Ricky Ireland<br />
is bringing down his ex Summernats<br />
winning late model Holden ute which has<br />
around 2,000 horsepower. For the Ford<br />
fans Arnie Donaldson returns with his<br />
chopped Falcon ute, plus all your favourite<br />
regulars. Oh and there is a certain Morris<br />
1100!!<br />
Melbourne ‘rockabilly’ band the Flyin’<br />
Saucers return for the first time since 2020<br />
and everyone loves Belinda on the double<br />
bass. I recently heard a great band at the<br />
‘Beach Hop’ called the Sons, who play<br />
a wide variety of infectious rock ‘n roll<br />
and are joined by Brothers Grimm, Late<br />
Starters, Yeah the Boys, Nexus and several<br />
high school bands which will give us a<br />
great variety of music.<br />
The pageant is another great spectacle<br />
that ‘kicks off ’ at 12 noon on Saturday,<br />
with all ages catered for. Registrations are<br />
on site on Saturday morning with old style<br />
hairdressers available on site. If you need<br />
a new dress for the event there are several<br />
sites on site, and the man in your life can<br />
purchase heaps of man cave stuff and the<br />
youngsters have rides in the kidz zone.<br />
Event t-shirts are available but always sell<br />
out fast. Saturday seems to be the big one<br />
these days. Check the weather first. Cold<br />
ice cream or cold beer, its all here.<br />
Open both days 9am till 4pm each<br />
day. $20 adult, two day pass $30 (public<br />
hours only) and kids under 15 free. It is<br />
a full day, don’t arrive mid afternoon on<br />
Sunday, you need the whole day. Info<br />
