season looks promising as harvest starts
“Crop harvest is just getting
under way, so there will likely
be good concentrations of birds
on freshly harvested fields,” said
Garrick.
“It’s a good opportunity to get
out and meet your local farmers
while re-honing your shooting
skills for opening weekend in
May.”
Hunters are encouraged to
be mindful of how they handle
bagged birds if they are spending a
long time out in the field. The heat
during summer can lead to meat
spoilage, so hunters should have a
plan to keep birds cool and don’t
pile them on top of each other.
Said Garrick: “If you’re looking
for somewhere to go hunting,
first find the ducks. Keep in mind
ducks tend to roost on bigger
bodies of water at night and fly
out to feed in the early morning
and late evening.
“Next, keep an eye out
for freshly harvested crops,
particularly when they are close
to bigger lakes, wetlands, and
irrigation ponds. If you can’t find
those, reach out.”
