Cultivating
creativity
By Christine Bryant
Staff Writer
Even during the most wintry days,
Highland Youth Garden Club members
find a way to connect with nature.
Through hands-on activities, area
youth learn in a safe space, says Carmen
Gil, manager of afterschool and family
programs.
“The purpose of the garden club overall
- we have a session for every season -
is to have a program that allows children
in the Hilltop a diverse safe space to call
their own,” Gil said. “It is a program that
allows the children to grow their own
food, learn how to grow it, maintain it and
learn various ways to prepare it.”
The Highland Youth Garden works
with more than 350 students each year
and grows over 3,000 pounds of food
annually, all of which is offered to Hilltop
neighbors through programs and garden
markets.
During warmer months, garden club
members help maintain the half-acre plot
of land that sits at 67 S. Highland Ave.,
just south of West Broad Street.
Even during cooler months, there’s
plenty of work to do and learning opportunities
available, Gil says.
Prairie proud of
resuscitation rates
By Christine Bryant
Staff Writer
With advancements in medical technology
and an increased understanding of
resuscitation techniques, the survival
rates of patients suffering from cardiac
arrest have increased dramatically.
In Prairie Township, this improvement
in emergency care is even more evident, as
the area is experiencing higher than average
numbers of successful resuscitations.
In 2022, emergency personnel achieved
the return of spontaneous circulation
(ROSC) in 40 percent of the fire department’s
patients, Prairie Township Fire
Department Chief Allen Scott said.
“This means that when we found
patients in a non-traumatic cardiac arrest,
we were able to get their heart beating
again prior to delivering them to the hospital,”
he said.
According to the American Heart
Association, the national average for this
same process is about 29 percent.
In 2019, ROSC numbers in the township
were at about 18 percent, Scott said.
At that time, the national average was
closer to 10 percent.
PRAIRIE TOWNSHIP
Continued from page 1
Yet the majority of the equipment the department uses
today during a cardiac arrest event has remained
unchanged in recent years, he said.
“We’re just using it in different ways,” Scott said.
“We’ve found that by switching up the order that we complete
tasks, utilizing our equipment in some different combinations
and setting clinical benchmarks, we’re achieving
great outcomes.”
Scott credits the implementation of new guidelines that
were shared at an emergency medical services conference
a few years ago. Prairie Township Fire Department’s cardiac
arrest protocols now incorporate the Cardiac Arrest
Priorities Approach, or CAPA protocol.
“We were able to work with our medical director and
put them into practice here in Prairie Township,” he said.
One of the significant protocol changes the department
has implemented is how medics administer medications
during cardiac arrest, Scott says. Medication administration
is now based on benchmarks that medics monitor
through a particular vital sign.
“That vital sign is known as Capnography,
which is an instrument used to measure the
amount of carbon dioxide in exhaled air,” he said.
“When the patient’s exhaled carbon dioxide reaches
a certain level, we know that cardiac medications
are more likely to be effective.”
Another example of a newer protocol the department
has initiated is the use of a physical therapy
wedge.
“This wedge keeps the patient’s head at a 30-
degree angle during CPR to reduce increased pressure
inside their skull,” Scott said. “This increased
pressure, caused from receiving CPR while lying
flat, can cause long-term neurological effects even
after the heart is restarted.”
CREATIVITY
Continued from page 1
www.columbusmessenger.com
One additional factor can help improve resuscitation
efforts - before medics ever arrive on scene.
“Early CPR is always important, as well as the use of an
AED, when available,” Scott said. “Everyone should learn
CPR. It’s easy to do and can literally save a life.”
The American Heart Association and local fire departments
often have information available on where residents
can learn CPR and how to use an AED, Scott says.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency procedure
used to manually preserve brain function by circulating
blood and oxygen to the heart and brain through chest
compressions.
An automated external defibrillator, or AED, is a
portable device that uses electrocardiogram technology to
analyze the heart’s rhythm and determine if a shock is
needed. AEDs are commonly found in public places like
airports, schools and sports venues.
Prairie Township medics use a machine called a
LUCAS device that performs unlimited, perfect CPR, Scott
says.
“Studies show that humans are only capable of performing
effective CPR for up to two minutes before they require
relief,” he said. “As the quality of CPR decreases, so does
its effectiveness. That’s why it’s important to call for assistance
as quickly as possible when you realize someone
needs help.”
“During the fall, we focused on cooking, social emotional
and community,” she said. “During winter, we
are working on various themes and starting seedlings
to plant out in the garden.”
Activities vary from harvesting fruits and vegetables
to creating variations of recipes, using natural
items found in the garden to make dyes, and creating
nature art.
Students also learn about ways they can use nature
to regulate their bodies and how they can give back to
the community by harvesting or creating items that
offer joy.
“The hope is that what we teach them or engage
them in will become lifelong knowledge and experiences,”
Gil said.
Planting seeds and taking them home provides a
science experiment students can follow, while learning
the various insects and how they may help or harm
plants help them know which bugs they may need to
relocate to help the plants in the garden thrive, she
says.
This winter, the garden club has held anywhere
between two to three sessions weekly. Each day, up to
10 students have attended.
“So we may have anywhere from 20 to 30 students
who come to the garden weekly,” Gil said.
Kindergarten through 6th-grade students who live
or go to school on the Hilltop are eligible to sign up for
the garden club.
Others who are interested in volunteering can sign
up for a variety of opportunities, from helping with
Staffing levels increase for SWCS
food and transportation departments
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
The supervisors at two of the most vital
departments within the South-Western
City Schools District presented the board
of education with its annual report last
month. The officials said that while their
departments continue to experience pandemic-related
shortages in some key areas
of operation, they believe they are starting
to turn a corner in regard to their overall
staffing levels.
At the Jan. 23 board meeting, transportation
supervisor Tim Cox reported that
there are 180 bus drivers currently on staff
and that there is a potential that number
could increase by seven should drivers-intraining
receive their licensure. With more
than four dozen bus aides on hand, Cox
said he takes some comfort in those numbers
but his concern continues to lay at the
substitute level.
According to Cox, the district currently
has 11 substitute drivers and 16 substitute
bus aides. He said those numbers, in particular
the former, are not adequate
enough in comparison to the size of the district.
“We need to have about 20 substitutes
per day,” he said.
Cox said some of the issue with the substitutes
they currently have is that these
are not individuals who can commit to taking
on regular routes for the district.
“Out of those 11 substitutes that we
have, we probably have four or five that
would be able to come in Monday through
Friday and help,” he said.
He added that most have full-time jobs
elsewhere and can only do field trips afterschool.
While helpful, Cox said they need to
find more individuals who can commit to
coming in when their regular bus drivers
are ill or on leave.
Although the substitute shortage is not
quite as dire as it has been in the past two
years, Cox said the district continues to
recruit and feels their efforts to shore up
those numbers have made an impact.
“My belief is, with the economy and getting
clientele to come in, it has been a little
bit easier to recruit and get individuals
interested in the job,” he said. “So it definitely
does seem like it is getting a little bit
better.”
The district currently pays bus drivers
$20.82 per hour and substitute bus drivers
$18.80 per hour. The district also covers
most of the expenses incurred as recruits
go through the process to obtain their
Commercial Drivers License. For instance,
Cox said the district pays for the drug test,
the physical, the required state courses,
and the CDL training while the recruit
pays for the temporary license and their
CDL Class B School Bus Passenger
Endorsement.
He encouraged those who have an interest
in driving a school bus — or even those
with a flexible work schedule who are trying
to make some extra money — to reach
out to the district through their website for
potential job opportunities.
In other transportation news, Cox said
the department’s fleet of buses are in good
condition. There are currently 213 buses
and vans in service and a majority of them
are newer models. He added that the district
ordered 15 new buses last year but are
still waiting to receive three of the buses.
He said the arrival was delayed due to a
back-order of parts for the handicap accessible
buses.
Lisa Hamrick, the supervisor of the food
services department, also presented an
annual report where she discussed staffing
levels.
According to Hamrick, the staffing situation
at the food services department has
rebounded from the previous year, especially
at the substitute level. She attributed
that bounce to a pay increase that
now sees substitute cooks earning $13 per
hour and the removal of a state requirement
which mandated cooks at all levels
take a civil service test.
“When that went away, it seemed like
the flood gates opened and we were ecstatic,”
said Hamrick.
Around this time last year, the food
service department had 30 open positions —
or a 16 percent shortage in their staffing
levels. This year, however, the food service
department has roughly 10 open positions
— or a 5 percent shortage in their staffing
levels.
Hamrick said she was comfortable with
those numbers but stated they will continue
to recruit at the substitute level. Like
Cox, Hamrick encouraged those with an
interest in food service to reach out to the
district through its website for employment
opportunities.
In related food service news, Hamrick
said the district is currently serving 6,500
daily breakfasts and 12,700 daily lunches.
She said there was only a slight decrease in
participation from last year’s numbers
when the federal government provided free
meals for school districts nationwide due to
the pandemic. The measure to continue to
provide free meals for school districts
nationwide for the 2022-23 school year was
not extended by the federal government.
STATE REPRESENTATIVE
Committee
Assignments
Announced
The Ohio House of Representatives legislative
committees for the 135th General Assembly
were named this past week. I am excited to
share that I have been named Vice Chair of the
Higher Education Committee. Additionally, I will
serve on the following committees: Finance
Subcommittee for Primary & Secondary Education,
Economic & Workforce Development, Technology
& Innovation, and Insurance. Eagerly
stepping into these roles, these committees will
enable me to both contribute in areas I have
experience and some expertise and position me
well to advocate for our district’s communities
as we work to bring more and better jobs to the
area. As Vice Chair of the Higher Education
Committee and member of the Finance Subcommittee
for Primary and Secondary Education,
I am determined to improve access to
quality education at all levels for our young
people here in District 10, as well as throughout
Ohio.
Beyond committee appointments, I also have
been busy meeting with constituents from
District 10 as well as recognizing some of them
for their accomplishments. In late January, I had
the opportunity to attend Congressman Mike
Carey’s official Military Academy Nomination
Reception at the Grove City City Hall, where five
of our finest students from Ohio’s 10th District
received nominations to prestigious military
academies. The students, their nominations,
and current high schools are as follows: Isaac
Carter, Naval Academy, Grove City High School;
Brian Fitzsimmons, Naval Academy, Bishop
Ready High School; Luke McCoy, Air Force Academy
and Naval Academy, Grove City Christian
School; Samantha Paduchik, Air Force Academy,
Grove City High School; Zachary Swierz, West
Demolition news brings back memories of mall
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine recently
announced that the state would demolish
599 blighted and vacant structures
throughout Ohio.
One of the properties that will be torn
down is the former Westland Mall shopping
center on the westside of Columbus.
“By ridding our state of eyesores that
are hindering development and impacting
property values, we can revitalize our communities
and attract new investments,
businesses, jobs, and housing opportunities,”
said DeWine. “Many of our communities
have truly transformative ideas for
these properties, and I’m pleased that
we’re able to help remove these barriers to
development.”
Westland Mall opened in the late 1960s
as an open-aired shopping center. It was
enclosed in the early 1980s and featured
anchor stores like Lazarus (which later
became Macy’s), Sears, and JC Penney.
Eventually, JC Penney left to relocate at
Tuttle Mall, and many retail outlets followed.
Sears was the last anchor store
remaining and most businesses were gone
by 2012.
Although I see the need for it, the news
of the demolition brought back many memories
of my time spent at Westland Mall.
When I was a kid, my mom would take
my sister and I out to eat at the restaurant
that was located on the upper floor of
Lazarus. After dinner, my mom would
shop, my sister would hide in the clothes
racks in the store, and I would have to find
her. I remember my mom taking my sister
and I to get our pictures taken with Santa
It arose in former farm fields along South
Hamilton Road like a crop of bricks, concrete,
and asphalt that bloomed into a shopping
destination.
Eastland Mall opened in 1968 and
brought large retailers like Lazarus, Sears,
and J.C. Penney’s to the southeastern corner
of Franklin County. Prior to that, one had to
drive to downtown Columbus to shop at
Lazarus, or, before I-270 was built, motor
down Williams Road to the Great Southern
Shopping Center strip mall on South High
Street to visit the Woolco there among other
stores.
But, in 1968 with Eastland Mall’s arrival,
it was bright lights, big city minutes away
from your front door. Within its enclosed confines
one could find big anchor stores like J.C.
Penney, Sears, and Lazarus as well as other
stores such as Woolworth’s, Radio Shack, and
Spencer’s. There was even a movie theater in
the mall. My first high school date was at
that movie theater. I remember how beautiful
and fun the girl was who accompanied me
on the date, but I don’t remember what the
movie was, probably because I was so mesmerized
by her!
I do remember many other things about
Eastland Mall from those days of the late
1960s into the 1970s. There was an eye catching
art work in the center of the mall that
consisted of strings extending from the ceiling
to the floor. The odd part about it was
there was some kind of goop that slowly
dripped along the strings to the base of the
art work. Never really understood if it meant
anything, but it was interesting to look at.
In my youth I used to mow about a dozen
lawns to earn my spending money. Often that
money went to purchases of rock and roll
records from J.C. Penney’s. In those days I
did not know about the cool record stores that
existed near the Ohio State University campus,
but I did realize someone in the JC
Penney purchasing department was in the
know about stocking records because that
store always had a good supply of what was
then cutting edge music 50 years ago. I
bought Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited”
there along with The Who’s “Who’s Next” and
“Live at Leeds,” as well as a Ramones album
among many others.
Eastland Mall’s J.C. Penney’s was where
as a kid I made what at the time I felt was my
Cordle’s Corner
Andrea Cordle
or with the Easter bunny. When I was
maybe 7 or 8, I got my ears pierced at
Claire’s.
When I was a teenager, Westland Mall
became the place to hang out with my
friends. (I’m sure the other shoppers and
retail workers loved to have teens loitering
around all day!) My mom would drop me off
at the mall then give me a few hours to just
run around. I would get those soft pretzel
sticks from Hot Sam’s and dip them in the
cheese sauce, then I would get a chocolate
chip or M&M cookie from Original Cookie.
(Not healthy — I know!)
I remember going into Wilson’s Leather
and always wanting those cool leather jackets.
I finally persuaded my parents to buy
me one. I got a green suede jacket that I
ruined almost immediately because I was
not aware at the time that the material
was not waterproof.
Once, I went shopping with my dad.
This was something monumental as my
dad never went shopping. He was going to
the mall to buy my mom a birthday gift and
he let me tag along. We were in the
Limited, which was a big deal for me. At
that age, I thought the Limited was a very
high-end outlet, way out of my price range.
(Of course, everything was out of my price
range as I did not make any money at the
age of 14.) As my dad was looking for a gift
for my mom, he told me I could pick out one
item for myself. I was so excited! I was
going to get something to wear from the
Limited! I picked out this pea soup green,
angora haired sweater. When I wore the
sweater the following day, I quickly realized
that I did not
like angora and
green was a terrible
color on me. I felt
like it was such a
wasted opportunity.
I tried to wear the
sweater a few more
times, with an
undershirt that would help the itching, but
parts inevitably would touch my skin, causing
irritation.
I had my first police experience at
Westland Mall. I was just hanging out with
a group of friends when a police officer
walked by. Trying to show off, I said, “I
smell bacon. Does anyone else smell
bacon?” (This was when the movie
“Wayne’s World” was popular and I loved
that film.) I thought the interaction would
be similar to the one in the movie. I was
wrong. The officer did not appreciate the
comment and he promptly put me in my
place.
I’m sure most people from the westside
and southwest part of the city have many
memories of Westland Mall as I do. I hope
the property will be redeveloped so generations
to come can make new memories.
Westland Mall is scheduled to be demolished
this year.
During my high school years I bought several
books at the book store at Eastland Mall
(I think it was a Borders store) that were
required reading in some of my English classes.
Books like Hemingway’s “Farewell to
Arms” and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The
House of the Seven Gables.” I admit I was
tempted to buy the “Cliff’s Notes” version of
what I perceived to be a dreadful Hawthorne
book, but I withstood the desire for a short
cut and plowed through “The House of the
Seven Gables” and was a better person for
the experience.
Eastland Mall, like many other businesses,
suffered through some tough economic
times. Retail goes in cycles, stores and shopping
centers come and go, but memories of
places remain.
A hat and scarf giveaway is back at the
Westland Area Library. These winter
warming items have been made and donated
by Westland community crafters.
Patrons can take an item they need or
leave an item for others. The giveaway will
run through February. The Westland Area
Library is located at 4740 West Broad St.
in Columbus.
Last year, thousands of visual artists,
writers, and musicians across more than
180 countries applied for a coveted artistin-residence
program at the Chateau
Orquevaux in France.
Initially built as a hunting lodge in the
1700s, the historic landmark in the northeast
region of the country has been partially
transformed into a retreat and workshop
for artists of “all mediums, backgrounds,
and stages of their journeys” by current
estate owner and filmmaker Ziggy Attias.
According to its website, less than 10 percent
of the applicants are awarded one of
the two established grants which help offset
the cost of the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Among the artists who were selected to
receive the Denis Diderot Artists-in-
Residence Grant and the Emerging Artist
Award Grant was a native to the westside
of Columbus. In March, Musca, a professional
tattoo artist who has more than 25
years of experience in the industry, will
travel to the secluded lakeside estate for a
two-week artist retreat and workshop.
Although she did not wish to share her
birth name in order to retain some
anonymity in her profession and her other
creative avenues, Musca wanted to share
parts of her story and her accomplishments
with the community in the hope that it
would inspire other creatives to “reach
beyond our borders.”
The Messenger recently conducted an
interview with the Clintonville resident
and owner of Spiritus Tattoo about her
background, the art scene on the Hilltop,
and her reaction to being accepted as an
artist-in-residence at the Chateau
Orquevaux.
Q - Were you born and raised in the
Hilltop area?
A - I was born and raised on the Hilltop
(on S. Terrace Avenue), the bottoms (near
Central Point) and Westgate. Both sides of
my family grew up in the region as well,
most of them lived within a few miles of
each other; and often on the same block.
Q - Did you attend a high school in the
area and if so, where did you attend and
when did you graduate?
A - After my parents split up when I was
10 years old, they moved all around central
Ohio and I went back and forth erratically
throughout the years. I went to several
schools after leaving St. Agnes Notre Dame
in the late 70s, sometimes multiple schools
in a single year. I graduated from Hilliard
Davidson in 1991, though I did not live in
the district at the time. Instead, I drove
across town from the westside every day to
finish my secondary education there.
Q - What did you do after high school
Photo courtesy of T Christopher Ottinger
Musca is shown here tattooing a vintage
GI Joe action figure that her friend has
traveled the world with in the military and
has put the figure into many scenarios.
and how did you get into the body art
industry?
A - I lost my memory due to an accident
at 16 and I scrambled to get myself together
and seemed to “get a pass” in ways that
I probably should have received professional
help instead. Due to the estrangement I
felt then, I lost a lot of friends, didn’t feel
connected to my family, but I still somehow
graduated high school and was gifted an
art scholarship to CCAD (Columbus
College of Art and Design). I didn’t have
the mental discipline or focus to commit to
it then, so I quit after three months, condensed
all my belongings into a big army
duffle and left town. I hitchhiked, hopped
trains, and found traveling caravans of
punks to go on stints with to squat in abandoned
buildings and the like. I did this for
two years, on and off. Due to the kind of
people I hung out with, I was exposed to all
kinds of outward expression and I began to
see body modification as an art form. It was
only a matter of time before I wanted to try
it. So I quit squatting after a very dangerous
experience, returned home and pursued
apprenticeships in both body piercings,
which took me to Phoenix, Arizona,
and tattooing, which began in Columbus.
Q - When did you first hear of the residency
for artists program at Chateau
Orquevaux and what were your immediate
thoughts about the program?
A - I think someone made a social media
post about the residency, as I’d not heard of
it before. I checked it out and it seemed to
encourage anyone and everyone in art to
apply for it. So I did. I thought ‘what the
hell,’ I have a huge bank of work no one has
ever seen on my website to show that I am
committed to the pursuit of making art,
though no resume to impress anyone with
academic prowess or otherwise — just life
experience. I thought it couldn’t hurt so I
applied and forgot about it.
Q - When did you learn you had been
selected? What was your reaction?
A - I almost missed the boat on it
because the only email I received in my
inbox was to tell me that they are giving it
away to someone else because they hadn’t
heard from me. Turns out, all previous
emails were showing up in my junk folder.
My reaction? I was honored, of course! This
is the first residency I’ve ever accepted that
will host other artists. Up until now, I have
been working on an island in Sweden completely
out of my mind alone at a residency
that is for much more personal creative
pursuits.
Q - Throughout the last decade, the
westside has made an effort to become
more of an arts-centered community. They
have a music and art festival in the summer
(Summer Jam West), they have a nonprofit
that works to bring public art to the
area (Hilltop Arts Collective), and they
have multiple murals, public art installations
and artists exhibitions held at area
businesses now. What was the art scene
like when you were growing up in the community?
If it was non-existent, where
would you go to see and experience art?
This photo showcases work by Musca.
A - There was no art scene at all on the
westside as I was growing up. In fact, I was
not well received as a freely expressive person
either, as I wore it on the outside as a
punk rocker. I was met with a lot of aggression
and insults there: It made me tough
everywhere else but there. I took the COTA
bus to the Short North for gallery hops and
snuck into campus bars. I never could’ve
imagined the westside would see its new
renaissance as it is today.
Ladies in “80 for Brady” score a touchdown
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
I do not often
experience a conflict
of the heart when it
comes to choosing
which movie to
review for my column,
but making a
decision as to
whether I wanted to give my time and my
dwindling coffers to “80 for Brady” had me
well and truly torn. On one hand, I did
have an interest in this film because it
stars Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno,
and Lily Tomlin — four of the most legendary
actors to ever grace the silver
screen. On the other hand, I did not have
an interest in this film because it also stars
Tom Brady — one of the most legendary
NFL quarterbacks who recently retired for
the second time and whose presence looms
over this film as much as his specter will
throughout the sport for now and all of
eternity.
Unlike most football fans whose loyalty
do not lay with the New England Patriots
(or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or whatever
team on the west coast team that may
entice him to come out of retirement later
this spring), I have never been a Bradyhater
but man has he been grating for the
past couple years. First there was the
acceptance of the pandemic-relief funds for
his multi-million dollar health and wellness
business, then there was the drawn
out first retirement that had him basking
in thousands of puff pieces for months and
then taking it all back, then there were the
bratty sideline antics when things were not
going his way for once, and then there was
the non-fungible token scandal, and now I
am just about tired of seeing him and hearing
about him. If you add all that up, and
then throw in the fact that he is a producer
on this film and gets a percentage of the
box office profit, it really makes you not
want to be involved in anything he is
involved in, right?
After much internal debate between this
film and M. Night Shyamalan’s dystopian
adaptation “Knock at the Cabin,” I decided
to stick with a vow I made to support novels,
movies, and television shows that are
women-led, women-centered, and showcase
people of a certain age living active and full
lives. And yes, that even includes women’s
lives that partially revolve around finding
inspiration from a famous athlete named
Tom Brady.
Whether or not you like the man in
question, “80 for Brady” is an infectiously
joyous film. Sure, it has moments that will
make you cringe or even give you a
headache because of how saccharine it can
be, but it is also an engaging and lighthearted
story about four friends who take
comfort in sport and in each other. Thanks
in large part to the chemistry between the
main cast, “80 for Brady” had a charm that
shines through despite being centered
around someone who seems so devoid of it
at times.
Loosely inspired by a true story, “80 for
Brady” follows longtime best friends Betty
(Field), Trish (Fonda), Maura (Moreno) and
Lou (Lily Tomlin) whose love for Tom
Brady and the New England Patriots
knowns no bounds. Despite having lived on
the east coast for most of their lives, the
quartet had little interest in football before
Tom Brady came onto the scene. In fact,
they really didn’t want to watch that fateful
game between the Pats and the New
York Jets but had to because Lou’s television
would not change the channel. When a
young Tom Brady came in for an injured
Drew Bledsoe, the friends were smitten by
his good looks and calm demeanor in the
pocket. Instant fans were made that day,
and watching them play throughout the
years helped Lou through her cancer treatments,
took Maura’s mind off the loss of
her husband, gave Betty a release from her
demanding husband, and allowed Trish to
find a second career writing Rob
Gronkowski erotica. (Seriously.)
Despite their team making several
appearances at the Super Bowl, the friends
have never attended one of the big games
(probably because they cost more than a
down payment on a new home) but decide
to enter a contest through a local radio station
that would send them down to
Houston to see the 2017 matchup with the
cursed Atlanta Falcons. Having little confidence
that their story of finding perseverance
through watching Tom Brady and the
team would win them the ultimate prize,
they try to put it out of their minds and
hearts. But then Lou makes the announcement
that they did snag the ultimate prize
and they would soon be embarking on a
journey toward “the best day of their lives.”
Naturally, things do not always do as
planned, especially in a comedy that features
Fonda and Tomlin together with all
of their chaotic energy.
Written by “Booksmart” scribes Emily
Halpern and Sarah Haskins, the script is a
nod to the fact that there is no age limit
when it comes to having fun. Not only do
the characters have a good time as they get
involved in various shenanigans during
their Super Bowl experience, but it seems
as if the primary and secondary actors are
having a good time too. Watching all of this
together makes the action all the more
engaging to the audience too, despite how
outlandish some of the scenes may get.
Even with the more farcical elements
within this story that is loosely based on
real individuals, everything that happens
in this film is well-intentioned and
designed to garner laughs, which they succeed
in doing so. Despite the overall lighthearted
tone of the film, there are moments
in which the story concentrates of real-life
issues related to cancer, death, and love —
all of which we can relate to. As a credit to
the writers and director Kyle Marvin, all of
the transitions between the silly and the
serious feel natural to the development of
the story and, as a result, makes “80 for
Brady” as enjoyable as it is touching — even
with all of the mentions and cameo appearances
of a certain newly retired quarterback.
Furniture Bank in need of donations
The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio (FBCO), is
looking to the community to help meet the current
demand for furniture and household goods.
Due to a recent natural disaster, FBCO is assisting
displaced Columbus residents, who lost all their
belongings, filling their new homes with furniture and
basic household goods. However, donations of gently
used furniture and home goods are needed from the
community to meet the increased demand.
“We are grateful to be able to help our neighbors
during this crisis but we cannot do it alone,” said
FCBO President and CEO, Phil Washburn. “We are
relying on our community to help us restore hope for
these affected families by donating their gently used
furniture and housewares.”
The items of greatest need are full and queen mattresses,
dressers, sofas, and kitchen dining sets.
Donations can be dropped off at Furniture With A
Heart at 2165 Morse Road in Columbus, Monday
through Sunday, or at FBCO at 118 South Yale Ave.,
Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m.to 3:30 p.m.
Donations of the items listed can also be picked up by
calling 614-545-3838. All donations are tax-deductible.
Community members that do not have furniture or
home goods to donate can purchase items from FBCO’s
Amazon Wishlist that will be given directly to families
in need. The wish list can be found at furniturebankcoh.org/amazonwishlist.
For more information on donating furniture and
other home goods, visit furniturebankcoh.org/donatefurniture.
The mission of the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio
is to reduce the impact of poverty by providing furniture
to central Ohio families and individuals struggling
with severe life challenges. Since 1998, the
organization has distributed nearly one million furniture
pieces and home goods to over 75,000 central Ohio
families by collaborating with approximately 7,000
furniture donors, 1,000 financial donors, 2,000 volunteers,
75 social service agencies and faith-based organizations
and many corporate partners every year.
Families visit the Furniture Bank showroom to personally
select 5-20 pieces of furniture, including beds,
dressers, tables, chairs, and other household items
that are then delivered the same day.
extension of two months to increase the rate of licensing. As in
past years, licenses may be purchased at doglicense.franklincountyohio.gov,
or at the auditor’s office license counter, 373 S. High
St., 21st Floor in downtown Columbus. The counter is open
Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
One-year, three-year, and permanent dog licenses can be purchased
through March 31. After the deadline, the cost to purchase
a license doubles.
The office will also offer licensing at expanded locations across
the county, including at pet vaccination clinics, the Franklin
County Dog Shelter, and at other community events.
In addition to being required by state law, dog licensing ensures
that a dog has been vaccinated against rabies, which is required in
Franklin County. It also ensures any lost dog is returned quickly
to their owners. License fees help support the Franklin County
Dog Shelter and Adoption Center.
Pets of the Week
Ariel is 5 years old
and is a beautiful
classic marked torti.
She loves drinking
water from the
faucet that her foster
parents leave
dripping for her. She
loves attention and
likes to explore. Her
favorite spot to nap is in the sunroom up in
the cat tree where she can watch the birds.
Ariel loves wet food and treats. She does
well with other cats but she has not been
around dogs. Adopt Ariel through Friends
for Life Animal Haven.
FYI: fflah.org
Belle is a roly-poly
little girl. She’s a bit
plump and about 2
years old. All of her
kittens have been
adopted, so now
Belle is looking for
her furever home.
She is shy but loves
to sit in her foster
dad’s lap. She gets
along with other cats. A family with older
kids might work out best for her. Adopt
Belle through Friends for Life Animal
Haven.
FYI: fflah.org
Betsy is a 1-yearold
girl who was
rescued from a high
kill shelter in West
Virginia. She is a
sweet and loyal girl
that just wants to be
with her person.
She is great with
other dogs and is respectful of cats. She
loves to be outside no matter the weather.
Betsy is up for adoption through Colony
Cats and Dogs.
Hitch (aka Hitchy)
is a big, handsome
boy with a past. He
was a former member
of a very large
street gang in central
Columbus. He
has, over the first
few years of his life,
endured homelessness, street fights, significant
food shortages, severe weather,
hostile humans, hostile dogs, skin and ear
infections, and multiple wounds. One rescued,
Hitch received a lot of medical care,
love, and socialization. He learned to play
with humans, toys, and with other cats.
Hitch is now very social. He is good with
other cats but is fearful of dogs after his
past experience. Adopt Hitch from Colony
Cats.
