Following the letter from Shaun Helman,
Chief Scientist at TRL in the last issue,
Derek Ferminger has interviewed Richard
Goddard for his response. You can read the full
interview on page 10 and I’d love to hear your
views on the subject.
In his editorial this issue, Fred asks ‘ Where has
the British bulldog spirit gone?’; although it’s a
question we can’t answer, you can certainly find
plenty of spirt in our Vintage Vehicles feature on
page 34, where we look at some of the highlights
of the display at last year’s Tow Show.
Birthday wishes go to Winch Systems who
celebrate 25 years of business this month whilst
Redtronic reach a 40 year milestone this year,
I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from them in
future issues.

Celebrating 40 years
of safety standards
The banging of the gavel is a tradition at the opening and
closing of the annual AGM of the Institute of Vehicle
Recovery. The names engraved on it reflect 4 decades
of IVR history and consideration of industry safety standards
through training. From its humble beginnings as an Institute with a
strong membership base and a commitment to raising standards
and skills through training, to where it sits today. The Institute is
continuing to drive professional skills and competence relating
to legislative and industry requirements through the National
Highways Sector Scheme 17/17B (NHSS17/17B) National Training
Scheme that it administers.
The scheme itself uses the SURVIVE Best Practice document
and PAS 43 as the baseline framework plus an unrivalled depth of
industry knowledge and experience to meet the industry training
standards as set out in the Sector Scheme.
Before the formation of the Institute of Vehicle Recovery
in 1983 training within the recovery industry had no formal
structure, it was one operator offering his valuable experience
to another. In order to better protect the technician, it was the
forward thinking of the then AVRO council that formed a steering
group of professionals within AVRO to introduce the Industry’s
Institute - the Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR).
Tasked with improving training and safety standards within the
sector the IVR partnered with many individuals and organisations
from all corners of the industry including recovery vehicle
manufacturers, VROs, trade associations, SURVIVE and work
providers. Underlining its roots as an industry scheme - by the
industry for the industry.
If you ask an IVR council member what the Institute’s remit
is invariably the answer will be to maintain the highest industry
standards to protect the technician (and their customer/s) in
their working environment whether on the side of the road or
in the depot. That initial remit must hold true for anyone in the
industry, staff who can move vehicles safely. Passing on knowledge
through practical, structured and consistent training is one of the
tools the IVR provides through a network of independent training
providers and instructors. The Institute’s work gives due diligence
where training is concerned, for the vehicle recovery operator
and contract holders alike. Cutting corners when it comes to
health and safety is just not an option.
As the IVR moves into its fifth decade, it has a National Training
Scheme which boasts over 30 modules with consistent standards
and assessment. It sits on all the relevant industry, HSE and
Government working groups and, with its strategic partnerships, it
ensures that training standards are always considered.
The IVR looks forward to celebrating 40 years of service at
its AGM in March and would like to thank all those who have
supported it on its journey whether past or present, thank you for
getting behind the high standards required to keep the industry’s
technicians safe.

Tony Lover, National Recovery & Contractor
Manager at the RAC is leaving the organisation
after 36 years of service.
Tony, who has worked in many different roles in his time at the
RAC, finishes at the end of January and is taking some time
away from the industry.
Tony commented: “I would like to thank the many companies
that I have worked with over the years at the RAC. I have fond
memories of all the individuals both inside and outside the RAC
who have been so supportive in my time there.”

Building on
recent success
Further to what I believe to be a successful
outcome to the Statutory Fees increase,
PROF wants to maintain the momentum that
was driven by a professional united profile
and turn our attention to the ticking time
bomb that is electric vehicles.

To that end, PROF has taken the initiative and after meetings
with NPCC and the IVR we requested a meeting with the
Home Office to discuss the responsibility of creating an
economic infer structure that needs to be implemented, which
can economically support the safe recovery, safe storage, and
safe disposal of electric vehicles recovered by VRO’s.
The Independent VRO simply cannot afford to absorb the
inevitable increase in costs, that will be driven by the significant
increase volume sales of Electric Vehicles that will inevitably
arrive.
Once again with the support of our strategic partners at the
NPCC and the IVR, we were able to request a meeting with the
Home Office, who again were receptive to meeting with us.
The meeting was very well chaired by Mick Burke and
collectively we presented to the Home Office representatives
the relevant challenges electric vehicles will pose as sales
volumes increase as will volumes of recovery’s and RTCs involving
them.
We also highlighted our concerns regarding the long-term
responsibility of vehicle manufacturers and the motoring
organisations ability to deliver free breakdown and recovery
schemes offered by manufacturers and the ability of the clubs
to deliver those policies without the recovery industry absorbing
their costs.
I’m pleased to state that AVRO was included in our meeting
with the Home Office, and collectively ERRI, PROF, IVR, NPCC
and AVRO agreed to the proposal of collectively constructing
an industry white paper that will present the serious economic
and operational issues that will face the recovery industry, public
services and the strategic road network.
Not to mention EV owners, not fully realising the economics,
and possible hazards of owning an electric vehicle.
This is the recovery industry common ground I have spoken
about in the past, where a professional and united profile is
integral to any success in communicating with Government
Departments and other industry stakeholders.
We all look forward to working constructively together in
representing our industry and another meeting will follow very
quickly.
However, whilst the Home Office and Police can appreciate
the economic increases we will be facing and the pressures
those increases will put upon the independent VRO network,
independent economic business decisions must be taken by
individual VRO’s themselves. Your economic decisions can only
be influenced and made by yourselves!
We are responsible for our own investments in heavier
vehicles, PPE, PACE and controlled storage facilities.
It’s pointless crying about increased costs and investment
then signing up and absorbing those increased costs yourself.
The motoring organisations have very few storage depots, if
any, and very few recovery trucks relative to their members.
I can’t afford to run an electric blanket let alone invest in fire
blankets.
So, let’s maintain momentum moving forward as an industry
together trying to improve all things vehicle rescue and recovery
and restoring an economically viable independent network.

Knowing Richard would want to have
his right to reply, Paul asked me to
construct some questions and do a
simple Q & A with Richard.
There have been several editorials featured in Professional
Recovery Magazine over the past year or two, all focusing on
the long-standing Red Rear Flashing Lights debate. Each one
has been written in a manner calling for increased safety for all our
roadside staff and of course the public they are serving.
There is one editorial written by Richard Goddard, with the title
“Treated with complete and utter contempt”! This edit appears to
have woken the authors of the past consultation documents. No
surprise really as I’m pretty sure it was intended to draw someone
out from behind that closed door, however I’m not so sure Richard
thought the chief scientist of TRL Shaun Helman would appear, no
I think Richard was hoping someone from the DfT would be brave
enough to speak out.
Having received a letter to the editor, it was clear this emotive
subjective was now touching a nerve with the organisation who was
commissioned to deliver the consultation and to draft a report on
the subject. Incidentally this report is over 4 years in the making.

As many of you will know, once Richard starts, he is very
difficult to hold down and keep direct to the subject, as his
passion and detail in his research just spills out. So, I started
by asking for a direct reply to the 3 points the chief scientist
of TRL - Shaun Helman, raised in issue 372, page 8, Letter to
editor.
Derek:
Mr Goddard notes that a 2009 TRL report ‘raised the point’
“Is the life of a Traffic Officer more valuable than that of a
recovery agent?” This question was not ‘raised’ by TRL in the
2009 report, or in any other report. It was presented as a
finding – a direct quote – from a road recovery operative who
had been interviewed as part of the research. It was offered
by this person as a personal reflection on what the recovery
industry felt at the time, regarding the use of red lights by
traffic officers.
Richard:
TRL, have been commissioned to carry out many major
research projects on behalf of the DfT, dating back as far as
2003.
TRL. Carried out the original research on lights and
conspicuity on behalf of Highways England back in 2004, they
also did the research recommending that traffic officers were
given, temporary use of rear facing red lights. In 2009 a report,
researched and drafted by TRL, endorsed the continued use of
red lights for traffic officers. Also contained in that report are
the references, to dilution and how dilution could impact traffic
officer’s safety!
There is also the reference to a “finding”, which quotes
why is the life of a traffic officer more valuable than that of a
recovery operator. I did not write the quote, I took it from the
report itself, this report is in the public domain, and I quote
directly from the 2009 report.
There is anecdotal evidence that rear red lights are regularly,
perhaps habitually, being used whilst Traffic Officer Service
vehicles are stationary on the hard shoulder - contrary to the
guidance to disengage them once stopped.
It is not known whether red lights are used as a result of
individual Traffic Officer’s decisions, informal instructions
received, or because of local operating practices.
It is reasonable to assume that, in those circumstances, the
Traffic Officers believe the use of additional rear-facing lighting
will enhance their conspicuity to approaching drivers.
This “more is better” attitude is, perhaps, encouraged by the
TASKCARD guidance which under “Safety” prompts the Traffic
Officer to consider:
l Position vehicle safely - ensure warning lights are on
l Use signals and advice to make the scene as safe as possible
In fact, interviews with road workers and in particular the
recovery industry identified that the misuse of rear red lights
by traffic officers stationary on the hard shoulder is leading to
a strongly-held belief amongst other sectors of road workers
that they too should be permitted to use such lights:
“The main method of improving the safety . . . described by
the recovery agents was the introduction of rear red lights for
their vehicles. . . . [They stated that] red lights would be more
effective than amber which merely created a “moth effect”.
The apparent common use of rear red lights by TOs (regardless
of type of incident being attended) was referred to with the
consequent query:
“Is the life of a Traffic Officer more valuable than that of a
recovery agent?”

Reading the facts as its written, how do you say, “presented as
a finding” reads a bit different now, and further endorses the use
by the recovery industry.
Derek:
Mr Goddard notes that he wrote to TRL “…who we’re (sic)
despite being researchers and authors of the National Highways
report I’ve just referred to, have again been commissioned by
the DfT, to again research our request to use Red Lights.” TRL
cannot accept the implication here that it is not qualified or
possessed the necessary independence to undertake this work.
As I explained to Mr Goddard when I met him at Highways UK in
November 2022, TRL is an independent research organisation.
It is completely separate from DfT (it was privatised in 1996) and
won the research contract for this work in open competition as
part of a formal procurement process. TRL’s independence in
this matter (and all research it undertakes) is a central part of its
mission and values.
Richard:
How can you possible remain “independent to undertake this
work” even if you do follow an “open competition as part of a
formal procurement process”. After making a very simple Google
search, throws up a countless list of projects undertaken by
this previously Government owned company, it may well have
been privatised in 1996, but that doesn’t take away the fact
the DfT and Highways England (as they were previously known)
combined, form the line share of your customer base. How can
you constructively comment against your paymaster.
Some of these extensive and detailed reports are completed
in less than a year, some within months of being commissioned,
how come the report on the use of red lights is now into its
fourth year?
The table below shows a short list of that Google throws up.
Derek:
Finally, Mr Goddard suggests that “…DfT continue to waste
public money commissioning worthless research…”. A previous
TRL review (mentioned in the letter from Grant Shapps that Mr
Goddard reproduces in his article) examined evidence from
published studies on the actual effectiveness of red lamps
on conspicuity in a range of on-road situations. The current
research has gathered evidence directly from drivers (on a track,
and in a high-fidelity simulator) on the actual effectiveness of
red lamps on a road recovery vehicle in terms of being seen
and understood by approaching drivers. It has also examined
other technologies that may help with the conspicuity of road
recovery operators and produced guidance with inputs from
road recovery industry representatives. I cannot agree with Mr
Goddard’s statement that such research – designed explicitly to
find ways of improving the safety of road recovery operatives – is
worthless. I hope that he will review the reports’ contents and
recommendations, when they are published, before making further
comments on the best way forward.
Richard:
The reason I consider the work carried out by TRL is worthless,
comes from over 4 years of time wasting. In 2019, following an
extensive campaign for safer roadside rescue and recovery,
the then Roads Minster ordered a government review into the
recovery industry VRO’s use of red lights, this was to increase the
safety of all roadside recovery operators and I might add the safety
of the public. TRL won the contract to carry out the research
on behalf of the DFT. (I would be very interested to see who TRL
tendered against or was it just yourselves).
In March 2021, The transport Secretary. Grant Shapps , wrote
to Sir Mike Penning , stating that following the recent government
review, which was apparently carried out by TRL (what a surprise.
A review we have never seen), raised concerns within that
“independent review” that granting the use of red lights to VROs
could possibly dilute the effect that red lights would have on
drivers, and could compromise the safety of Highways England
traffic officers.
Mr Helman states that the concerns of dilution raised by TRL,
in their report 2009, which concerned the continued use of red
lights for Highways England traffic officers, has only been raised
twice in 2 decades. 2009 / 2010. A statement I believe is correct!
So, when Mr Shapps referred to “dilution” he could only have been
referring to the reports 11 years before his decision in 2021, as
there was no fresh evidence.
At a subsequent recovery industry executive meeting chaired by
National Highways, I questioned the validity of dilution being used
as the reason, as its simple b*****ks!

I also. Asked for the report of the government review to
be made public, to have a complete insight into the 2-year
government review carried out by TRL, still to date nothing from
either National Highways or TRL, how can you ever imply that is
not a waste of money.
Derek:
I thought it was worth continuing my discussion with Richard into
other areas of this Red-Light debate.
So, Richard, the report of 2019, which according to Shaun has
apparently been published, why do you think it has never been
made available.
Richard:
It’s not just the lack of the 2019 report, a consultation brought
about by PROF’s lobbying along with other industry stakeholders,
the recovery industry’s Charity RISC, both groups funded the
Campaign for Safer Roadside Rescue & Recovery CSRRR, which
led to the subsequent government review ordered in 2019. A
review, once again to be carried out by TRL, let’s say once more,
“another successful tender”. The recovery industry has never
been privy to that report ordered in 2019, and how the dilution
conclusion was reached by the DfT.
Oh no, in March 2021 TRL are procured to action another
review, even though, it was their reference of dilution that was
cited as the reason for not granting us red lights. So, forgive me if
I was somewhat shocked that TRL had been again commissioned
to carry out a further review. This time it would be evidence
based, even though we are still yet to see the previous 2019
report.
It then took from March 2021 to September 2022 to finally
organise a road trials, and what a farse that turned out to be, as
it was reported back by, ERRI, LARO, RISC and a few others what
an irrelevant shamble it was! Irrelevant, because it had nothing to
do with “Dilution” surely the whole reason for commissioning, yet
another report was to investigate the possibilities of dilution and
what if any the adverse effects could be. Afterall it was THE ONLY
REASON EVER GIVEN BY THE DfT, not to grant the use in the first
place.
It was after the Newbury debacle, that I wrote to Malcolm
Palmer and copied Chucks Oquibe of the DFT, asking what
exactly was going on. Admittedly my email was blunt and direct,
many other stakeholders also wrote to Mr Palmer asking pretty
much the same questions as me, but in perhaps a more polite
manner. Mr Palmer declined to answer the questions, this led left
me no alternative but to send a follow up email, this time I was
more robust.
It was this email that led to Shaun Helman writing to me and
inviting me to a meeting at Highways UK at the NEC Birmingham,
a meeting intended to clear the air and to be constructive in
moving forward.
I must say I found Shaun to be likeable honest and direct, most
definitely devoted and loyal to the DfT, and why wouldn’t he be?
We work in an industry where each one of us independent
operators do our very best not to upset our major work
providers, so whether it’s a poor old VRO or TRL, why would you
upset one of your paymasters.
Derek:
I’m sorry Richard, this hasn’t followed the conventional question
then answer format, I didn’t want to interrupt you, but to let you
speak freely on the subject, as I know your passionate to get the
approval of Red Lights, or to properly understand how dilution
could ever be a factor or are we just being discriminated against.
Richard:
Thank you for that Derek, I have a few questions that remain
unanswered from Shaun, perhaps I could take this opportunity to
ask, that way I feel everything is open and clear, it’s up to Shaun
or TRL if they chose to answer.
I posed these questions during our meeting at the NEC, but to
date I’ve not had an answer.
1. Following the research and subsequent reference to Dilution
in 2009, could TRL still be objective in their research in 2019, as
they already had an opinion that granting us use of red lights would
compromise the safety of traffic officers.
2. After 18 months evidence-based research by TRL, why was the
only reason given by the Secretary of State for Transport at the
time, Grant Shapps “Red Lights Dilution” and was that decision
based on an 11-year-old report?

3. Where was the rest of the review and why have we not seen
sight of it?
4. After TRLs observations and references to Dilution, how did it
make sense, to again commission TRL to carry out a further review
in March 2021 on the very same subject.
I also questioned if Malcom Palmer could be objective having
contributed to the 2009 / 2010 reports, could he ever come away
from the process with a different conclusion. This must put into
question TRL’s independence. As scientists, you have come to your
evidence-based conclusion, so why would you change your original
conclusion.
5. I also questioned if these government funded reviews were a
responsible use of public funds. When it took 18 months from March
2021 to September2022 to organise the road trial, which turned out
to be a totally irrelevant waste of money. Notwithstanding the fact
that since June 2019 that was the only practical interaction we had
had with TRL or DFT, in nearly 4 years of evidence based research.
How can that be?
Anger or passion as you put it, has nothing to do with my
comments and I stand by them all,
I take exception to the references regarding my commitment to
working together to improve safety! Improving safety is one thing.
Depriving the recovery industry of the same safety concessions
offered to our public servants, Police, Fire services, and National
Highways Traffic Officers is a scandalous injustice and deprives
the roadside recovery worker of their basic right to a safe place of
work!
We’re not calling for “red flashing lights” to help motorists identify
recovery operators working in live lanes and motorways. We want
those red warning lights to do just that, warn oncoming motorists of
a possible hazard and to slow down and move over. The very same
reason other public services use them. But those public service
workers have the addition of lane closures and impact vehicles to
protect them, the recovery operator has nothing.
After 4 years of constant reviews, the recovery industry is yet to
see one report or any relevant interaction with the DFT! To date
there is still no definitive conclusion regarding the use of red lights
for the recovery industry.
So, when I talk about contempt and another example of
governments, misuse of public funds, I stand by those accusations
too! Those accusations are not in any way directed at TRL or any of
its staff. However, the lack of communication, and the complacent
unresponsive attitude aimed towards the recovery industry, is
an accusation I made personally to Shaun witnessed by Derek
Firminger. And I make no apology for that ether!
Four years on, and the clocks still ticking, and the meters
probably still running as we continue to risk the lives of our
roadside staff, clearing motorways and highways.
All of this as we live in an age where government and civil
servants question the science-based evidence that defines men
from women, what is the reality of evidence-based conclusions?
However, we can still rely on the difference between right and
wrong, we don’t need scientists to research injustice, we just need
a government to declare justice and stop risking our lives.
Derek:
Thank you, Richard, for being so open and frank with your views, I
feel sure Shaun will answer your questions, and perhaps he could
ask DfT for that 2019 report to be officially published, I don’t think
it would be too much to ask, unless of course there is something
they wish to hide?
The final few words are from me, how many more lives will be
lost by recovery staff working at the roadside? For the record we
lost 2 more this January, yes 2 more unnecessary lives lost. The
magic wand may not be a red rear flashing lights; however, the
question remains could that added level of protection have saved
those lives?
There is no more time for debate, please publish both the 2019
report and your latest finding from your 2021 consultation, report,
then based on those findings and the decision from the DfT,
its then the recovery industry can begin to legally integrate red
flashing lights into their safe systems of work or look to the courts
of human rights for a legal ruling.

Alpha return to
Boniface for their
latest Interstater
After the success of their previous DAF XF with
Recoverer Trident equipment and in line with their
planned re-investment into the business, Michael Burke
and Simon Narey from Alpha Recovery returned to
Boniface to collect the latest in a series of heavy-duty
builds which will provide additional capacity to their
already impressive and ever-growing fleet.
Alpha’s latest vehicle is a new Scania 540 6x2 chassis supplied by
Steve Holmes at Alpha’s local dealership in Newcastle upon Tyne,
onto which Boniface installed their latest heavy-duty Interstater
Mk6 equipment with Maxireach Lowline underlift. The equipment
was specified with twin heavy duty winches, hook back points at
the fairleads, additional D Rings on the rear back plate and exposed
rear legs - again providing additional hook back points for winching.
The vehicle features Deluxe stainless steel bodywork which has
been skilfully crafted by Boniface to incorporate many unique
features requested by Alpha, on top of which is the iconic Stealth
flyer with duplicated repeater lights. As with all Alpha builds the
vehicle has been built to a very high specification and is packed
with ancillary equipment allowing them to easily deal with any task
they are required to perform – quickly, efficiently and safely. Alpha
worked alongside Boniface during the build process to ensure that
every piece of equipment within the bodywork was meticulously
stowed - ensuring quick and easy access to their most used items. A
360-degree camera and sensor system was also installed providing
the driver with a clear view of what is happening all around the
vehicle at any given moment. Rear facing cameras fitted to the
vehicle can also be used in conjunction with the radio remote control
to operate the underlift without leaving the cab when trying to
negotiate a casualty into a difficult yard.
For over 40 years the Interstater product has evolved, being tried
and tested in countries all over the world and offering more reach
and greater lifting performance with each new version. The latest
Mk6 version features single or twin BS EN 14492 compliant heavy-duty
hydraulic winches, a choice of standard rear stiff legs with flip over
feet/spades, or side extending rear legs as seen on this latest Alpha
build which offer increased stability and
anchorage whilst heavy lifting or winching. As

Slidebed for Oasis Rescue
Following on from their 2022 fleet upgrade and expansion
programme, Rayan and Anya from Oasis Rescue and Recovery
returned to Boniface to collect their first Champion slidebed
of 2023 – this time fitted to a new 14 tonne GVW, Volvo FL250 with
crew cab and rear air suspension.
As always, the striking Oasis graphics combined with the bright
blue steel deck of the Champion slidebed make this vehicle a real
head-turner and one that will promote a very positive professional
company image whilst out on the road. Oasis’ continued
investment into their business has resulted in a very modern fleet
– most of which is Euro 6 compliant enabling them to travel without
restriction or additional expense into the new low emission zones
which are now becoming increasingly common throughout the
country.
The Champion slidebed is a very robust, reliable and capable
product that has been extensively used by operators all over the UK
and Ireland for many years. It is available in three capacities, 3.5t, 5t
and 6t and is available with either a steel or aluminium deck making
it suitable for many different chassis and applications. One of the
many standard features of the Champion 5t & 6t products is a
hydraulically sliding 8,000lb hydraulic winch that allows the operator
to easily maintain a straight pull on the vehicle’s towing eye. The
2t capacity 2nd car lift is adjustable for both width and tire size
allowing the operator to move anything from the smallest car to the
largest van. Like most Boniface slide beds, the subframe and tipping
frames are fully galvanized to help prolong equipment life and the
body is fitted with LED beacon, work lights and marker lights - all of
which will provide years of reliable service. The Champion slidebed
has lever controls housed in a locker at the rear but may also be
specified with a remote control for the winch or all functions if
required. Operation of the bed is smooth and quiet whilst clearly
labeled controls make operating the product very user friendly.
This latest vehicle for Oasis was built to their exact requirements
and included some optional extras such as low winch facility in
the deck allowing casualties to be winched onto the 2nd car lift,
wrecker kit, trailer board, radio remote control, side winching
points and many more.

We have dealt with Lanes Recovery for many years, and it’s
always a pleasure when loyal customers return to place,
on this occasion, a sizeable order for a new DAF CF 530
6x2, which included our CL500 Commander conversion with the
top recovery boom, 2 x 35,000lb winches, hydraulic extendable
rear support jacks with stainless steel body work, we also had the
pleasure of doing the paintwork and logo in their livery plus some
extras at Lanes request.
At the start of the conversion we were hit by some delays, mainly
brought on by covid and specialist components, the Lanes family
were very understanding of this situation, and although they made
one or two changes to the specification during the build which
didn’t help the delay, they were very patient and allowed us to
complete the conversion and the final finish on the vehicle at our
own pace without any unnecessary stress, this gave us the best
opportunity to provide them with an outstanding vehicle, which not
only performs to their specification, but has also met all of their
expectations in the presentation and the final look of the vehicle.
Vernon, Will and Chris arrived all together here at Droitwich
for the handover and collection of the vehicle, it was an absolute
pleasure for me from start to finish, including the handover, to see
their gratification to what we had produced made it very pleasant
and enjoyable end to a long conversion process.

It’s amazing, considering the state of the economy and the
war in Ukraine, which is putting a dampener on everything,
that all people can think about is arguing over petty faults and
indiscretions that, if taken in their true context, are irrelevant
to the running of the country. The real truth is that Britain is
becoming a broken country if it already has not got there.
As people know, I am a great believer in historic sayings that
in many cases are the best of when Britain was great. One that
comes to mind now is it’s not who is right or wrong it’s ‘getting the
job done’.
It’s incredible how this Government has effectively been
brought down by a nation of ‘do gooders’. It isn’t the Government
that’s got the country in its present state, it’s the population
in general. We have become a nation that wants everything for
nothing and please don’t ask us to work for it. There are strikes
springing up left right and centre so I sometimes ask myself, “who
is driving it all?” I know an NHS Nurse who has no desire to strike
as she feels well paid but is facing discrimination (I suppose if it
is happening once, it is happening much more). We all look back
with great fondness and admiration to people who fought and
won the second World War; every person was well and truly on
the case. So where has the British bulldog spirit disappeared to?
Some of it undoubtedly is in the minds of the ‘do gooders’ and
the ‘WOKE’ society. The public sector in particular is now just an
inefficient joke! I recently came across an item for which I make
no apologies for copying here. It is as follows:

The NHS held a boat race against a Japanese team
and, after Japan won by a mile, a working party found
that the winners had 18 people rowing and one steering
whilst the NHS had 18 steering and one rowing! So, the
NHS spent £5m on consultants, formed two steering
committees with four managers and appointed a
director of steering. The rower was given no incentive.
They held another race and this time they lost by two
miles.
Britain is now a society where most people are living
beyond their means. Back in the day we all saved up and
when we could afford it, we bought it. Now, borrow as
much as you can and hope nothing changes. Despite
enjoying huge debts no-one wants to work. The 30-odd
hour week is creeping in as people look to jobs with
no impacted responsibility no-one wants to become a
tradesman. Not to mention that too many people are
still looking for early retirement, how we will manage in
the future is anybody’s guess. Why does no-one have the
desire to bring the next generation into the workplace
where there are actual jobs available. Keeping people in
longer term education who then do nothing is a recipe
for disaster as we are slowly finding out.
It appears that no-one wants to be in a proper job.
I was told recently that we are 500 Probation Officers
short, thousands of Nurses, quite a few Police and a
shortage of every single trade or profession you can
think of. What is the point of saving the planet with all
these green policies if we have nobody to do proper
jobs, this being the case what’s the world going to come
to in 15 years never mind any longer.
The only thing opposition Politicians can think about
is how many parties Boris had and whether all MP’s have
paid their taxes, a few good policy suggestions would not
go amiss. Meanwhile, people are still arriving in droves
in those boats because they have smelled a gravy train!
A lot of the problems we are facing are because nobody
can get anything done because somebody or a group
of people decides to bully them. I would have thought
that someone like Winston Churchill must have faced
the same sort of resistance, but I guess it was not via
Facebook.
An elder once said to me there is one sure way to find
the right person to overcome any difficulties and put
things right; we can all take a good look at that person
when we next get the chance; all we have to do is stand
in front of the mirror.

Vintage Vehicle Display
Hall 3 - Tow Show 2022
The display has been such a popular
feature of the show for the last two
year’s so we wanted to take the
opportunity to reflect on some of the amazing
vehicles on display during the 2022 show, and
to include a ‘roll of honour’ thank you to those
who make such a big contribution in making
the display happen.
Firstly, we have to extend special thanks to
John Coupland and Andy Lambert for all their
effort and time given to the co-ordination
and management of the display. This special
thank you also goes to Chris Keady and Dave
Langham at LV=Britannia Rescue for their
continued and very positive support as the
display sponsor.
The 2022 display attracted a unique array
of bygone breakdown and recovery vehicles,
from the earliest motorcycle patrols, through
to the mighty military machines built and
operated during WW2 and up to the 1990s.
All of the vehicles were kindly loaned,
transported and displayed at their owners’
costs, for which we are extremely grateful.

We received a request for assistance after hours on Friday
6th January for two brand new Combine Harvesters which
had slipped off whilst loading. Incident Manager sent
through to King George Dock Hull to assess what equipment
was required.
Saturday morning, we went through to King George Dock
Hull with two heavy recovery vehicles. The first Harvester
had slipped off the loading ramp and required to be lifted
back onto the ramp. Using high pressure air mats and lifting
strops attached to the wheel to enable a safe and secure
lift. The second recovery units winch was attached to the
opposite wheel to winch Harvester back straight to allow
the vehicle to be rolled back off the low loader. The second
harvester was a little more difficult as this had broken
the front greedy board during loading. We had to be very
careful lifting the second harvester to prevent the opposite
greedy board from breaking.
We supported the greedy board with blocks of timber
while we lifted the harvester with the same rigging as the
first one. This allowed new greedy boards to be placed
in situ prior to us lowering the Harvester down back into
position. The task was completed smoothly and efficiently
and both Harvesters was delivered later that day to their
destination.

After a very busy 2022, CF Motoring

Alan Sewell Breakdown & Recovery based in Co Durham. On
the recovery side we attend commercial vehicles carrying
hazardous loads and we can handle vehicles up to 44 ton,
plus heavier vehicles depending on the circumstances
including heavy winching e.g. plant, a heavy tractor unit and
a 17m recovery trailer.
