• MICHAEL MCGRATH MURDER TRIAL •
Cash stashed in walls,
$205,000 in bank
PHOTO: KAI SCHWOERER
• By Kurt Bayer
A BUILDER who vanished
nearly six years ago and who
police allege was murdered
by an old schoolmate, was
socially-anxious, stashed cash
inside the walls of his house, left
$205,000 in the bank, shunned
cellphones and the internet, and
lived outside of society’s norms,
a court heard yesterday.
Ex-prison officer David
Benbow, 54, (above right) denies
murdering Michael McGrath
(above left) who disappeared
on May 22, 2017.
McGrath’s body has never
been found – and nor has
a murder weapon – despite
widespread searches of rivers,
waterways, and the city
dump.
Benbow’s defence team
warned the jury at the High
Court in Christchurch of
“investigative bias” and “tunnel
vision” from police early in
their investigations, who they
claim were trying to find
evidence to support their case.
The Crown alleges Benbow
murdered his friend McGrath
just weeks after learning he was
seeing his ex-partner Joanna
Green and telling a counsellor
he wanted to “annihilate”
him.
THE CITY council is reviewing
the actions of lifeguards at
Pioneer Recreation and Sport
Centre after a video of staff
throwing a floating ring across
the pool to a child it was claimed
was drowning went viral.
The video, shared on TikTok,
featured two lifeguards on a
platform above the pool. One of
them threw the ring across the
busy pool and it landed on the
child with pinpoint accuracy.
The video was captioned: “See
a kid drowing (sic), Dw (don’t
worry) I got it.”
Pool users appreciated
the skilful throw, with one
man seen giving enthusiastic
support for the young lifeguard’s
aim.
The video quickly racked up
thousands of views but was
swiftly removed after media
inquiries to the city council.
City council head of recreation
Nigel Cox said the child was
never in danger.
“The child in the video was
not drowning or in difficulty
in the water, but had asked a
lifeguard to throw him a life ring
to use while swimming in the
pool.
“This was not an emergency
situation and therefore our
standard emergency practices
were not required to be followed
in this instance,” he said.
Cox said the video should not
have been shared online but the
lifeguards were well-trained and
took the safety of pool users very
seriously.
“We take all incidents of pool
users getting into difficulty in
SEPARATIST rebels in
Indonesia’s restive Papua
videos on Tuesday of a man they
said is the Christchurch pilot
they took hostage last week.
Phillip Mehrtens, a pilot for
Indonesian aviation company
fighters from the West
Papua Liberation Army, the
armed wing of the Free Papua
it landed on a runway in Paro in
the remote Nduga district.
The plane, carrying five passengers,
Sambom sent videos and
It alleges Benbow lured
McGrath to his semi-rural
lifestyle property in Halswell on
Monday, May 22, 2017 and used
his .22 semi-automatic rifle, with
suppressor and sub-sonic ammunition,
to shoot him dead and
then dispose of his body.
While the Crown accepts there
is no body, no murder weapon
and little forensic evidence in
the case, it says there is a strong
circumstantial case consisting of
many threads that, when taken
together, show Benbow is guilty
of McGrath’s murder beyond
reasonable doubt.
Younger brother Simon
McGrath started giving evidence
on Tuesday afternoon and continued
yesterday, describing Michael
as a gifted, hard-working
builder, all-around good guy,
and dependable “creature of
habit”.
Yesterday, Simon was crossexamined
by defence lawyer
Kathy Basire.
Given that Michael McGrath
had lived amidst a protracted
home renovation, stashed cash
inside his walls, had $205,000 in
his bank account and yet lived
on a sickness benefit, while not
using a cellphone or home internet,
hand-washed clothes, and
drove a car that wasn’t registered
or warranted, Basire asked if
it was “fair to say he operated
outside of social norms?”
He described his bachelor
brother as “very frugal” and who
usually paid for things in cash.
Basire also asked if he knew
his brother had been diagnosed
with social phobia or social
anxiety around the time he’d
undergone an operation for varicose
veins and the Canterbury
earthquakes.
He replied that he didn’t know,
but said that he might have
opened up to other people.
Michael was “his own man”,
Simon told the court, but he
never saw him as an anxious
The last time he saw him, Michael
had seemed in high spirits,
he said.
“There wasn’t one part of me
that thought he wasn’t his usual
self . . He seemed very, very
happy.”
He also admitted not knowing
that Michael had been in a relationship
with Green, although he
had “suspected something was
up”.
Michael had often joined his
brother on Saturdays to watch
rugby and socialise at a local
pub, but he had not been going
much in the months leading up
to his disappearance.
The court earlier heard how
Benbow had allegedly been devastated
after learning that Green,
his partner of 17 years, had taken
their two children and left earlier
in 2017.
On Tuesday, May 23, 2017,
when Michael didn’t show up
for the usual dinner at their
mother’s house in Halswell,
Simon thought it was unusual.
Within minutes, Green had
phoned his mother, saying
she thought something had
happened to McGrath and that
“Dave had done something”.
After going to Michael’s
house and not finding
him home, Simon became
increasingly concerned about his
whereabouts.
Around 1am, he parked outside
Benbow’s house and phoned
him. It went straight to voicemail
and he left, the court heard.
But the next morning, Benbow
phoned him back, the court
heard. Simon asked him about
Michael’s whereabouts but
claimed he didn’t make any accusations,
but rather asked him
some direct questions.
Later he questioned how
Benbow had reacted after the
disappearance.
“I would assume if you’ve got
nothing to hide you would come
around with some concern,”
Simon said.
Lead defence counsel Marc
Corlett KC said that “within
hours” of McGrath’s disappearance,
Green had pointed the
finger of blame at Benbow “and
the police duly obliged”.
But despite teams of police
spending thousands of hours
investigating “trying to find any
evidence they could to fit their
theory”, they could not find any,
Corlett said.
Dolphins lives at risk during SailGP
• By Tony Simons
Excerpts from the
SailGP Marine Mammal
Management Plan
blacked out in the
redacted version:
“While several marine mammal
species are found in the waters
of the wider Banks Peninsula
area, the nationally vulnerable
upokohue/hector’s dolphin is
at the greater risk during the
SailGP New Zealand Grand
Prix due to its prevalence within
Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour
A PLAN TO protect hector’s
dolphins during next month’s
high-speed SailGP races on
Lyttelton Harbour reveals there
is a risk some will be killed and
organisers promoted the use of
a controversial device to reduce
the chances of that happening.
The full unredacted version
of the SailGP Marine Mammal
Management Plan, obtained by
The Star, discusses a proposal
to experiment with a high-frequency
acoustic deterrent device
to keep the dolphins safely away
from the racecourse.
The plan, authored by environmental
services company,
Enviser, for SailGP and ChristchurchNZ,
was initially released
with much of the content blacked
out late last year after an official
information request from Environment
Canterbury councillor
Genevieve Robinson.
Robinson said she requested it
because she knew the race was
risky and couldn’t find a copy of
the plan anywhere.
The unredacted version shows
race organisers planned to use
and its inquisitive nature.
“Marine mammals already
face risks year-round within
Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour
but the risk level will be heightened
by SailGP’s training and
racing activities.
“The SailGP Grand Prix will
lead to increased boat traffic in the
area on the practice, rehearsal and
racing days, increasing the risk of
vessel strike to marine mammals,
particularly upokohue/hector’s
dolphin.
“Subject to obtaining a Wildlife
the device if they could not
detect dolphins by any other
might react to it and reveal their
whereabouts.
SailGP’s application to the Department
of Conservation to use
the device was dropped after it
racecourse . The ADD will remain
active for the duration of racing.
The ADD will be activated only if
no marine mammals are present
within the inner-harbour waters.
This mitigates the risk of displacing
a dolphin from where it wants
to be and instead waits for them
to leave the area on their own.
“No data exists on ADDs
eliciting behavioural responses
in upokohue/hector’s dolphins. A
been attracted to it.
When asked why the report
from swimming away, surfacing
more often, or to changing
vocalisations. Based on several
studies reporting conspicuous
responses, it is reasonable to
expect the very short-term use of
ADDs (as in this case) will result
in a behavioural response by an
unsuspecting and undetected,
upokohue/hector’s dolphin.
Any behavioural response will
likely increase the likelihood of
detection . . . and that detection
may not have occurred without
ADD use (which would mean the
had been redacted, a SailGP
spokesperson told The Star it
was “to prevent serious offence
to tikanga Māori and to avoid
disclosing locations of waahi
tapu (sacred sites).
But the unredacted version
contains no reference to tikanga
Maōri or tapu sites, except that
race officials “are to have an
appreciation of mana whenua
values and the tikanga involved
with implementing the plan.”
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu did
not respond when asked about
the report. And yesterday SailGP
changed its statement, saying the
“redactions were made to protect
people’s names and, in some
cases, the commercial position of
SailGP.”
ChristchurchNZ was also
asked to comment on the
redactions but did not respond.
dolphin remained in danger of
fatal injury).
“Because no studies report
cetaceans being attracted to
ADDs, it is considered very
unlikely that upokohue/hector’s
dolphins will be attracted to the
ADD device.
“The short-term use of these
devices (in areas where no marine
mammals are detected) will
therefore help to protect marine
mammals from the risk of vessel
strike, which is very likely to be
fatal to the animal.”
Bowel screening finds
cancers early, when
they are easier to treat
“My message to
you whānau, is
to do the test and
return it straight
away. If you are too
young, encourage
your aunties and
– it could save
their life.”
THE MURDER of a woman by
a stranger on leave from a secure
mental health unit will be the
subject of a coronial inquiry.
Zakariye Hussein, 37, pleaded
guilty in September to killing
Laisa Waka Tunidau as she
walked home from work on June
25.
Hussein was an inpatient at
Hillmorton Hospital and had
10 years earlier been jailed for a
stabbing rampage, nearly killing
a man.
There are two reviews following
the murder - one into
Hussein’s care, the other into the
secure unit at Hillmorton.
On Tuesday, Coroner Alexandra
Cunninghame said in minute
released to the NZ Herald
that she had earlier postponed
opening an inquiry in order to
allow for the criminal process to
proceed.
“At the time of Mrs Waka’s
murder, Mr Hussein was an inpatient
at Hillmorton Hospital.
The circumstances in which he
left the hospital on June 25, 2022,
have been the subject of a review
which was commissioned by Te
Whatu Ora (the review).
“I have determined that it is
now appropriate for me to open
an inquiry into Mrs Waka’s
death, and I hereby do so.”
Justice Cameron Mander
MISSED: Laisa Waka Tunidau, pictured here with her
12-year-old son Eparama, was killed as she walked home
from work on June 25.
sentenced Hussein to life imprisonment
with a minimum
non-parole period of 13 years in
November.
Three psychiatric reports
were prepared for the criminal
proceedings.
They found he was capable of
being involved in inflicting violence
when not acutely unwell.
He held “intense grandiose
and religious beliefs”.
He believed God was going to
give him money so he could buy
houses and marry staff.
The clinical staff he engaged
with said he had endless discussions
about these beliefs.
On the day of the killing, he
was frustrated with hospital
staff, in particular, because they
removed staples from a newspaper
supplement advertising real
estate that he had been examining
and circling properties he
was going to purchase.
He then left to tell his family
he would not be going back to
the hospital, telling himself God
had given him a “hell of a sad
life”.
On his way, he stopped at a
library to look at the property
section of a newspaper.

He then entered the family home “in
He had thoughts of wanting to hurt
Hussein was granted community leave
from the hospital at about 2.30pm on
June 25.
He then took a bus to Sockburn and
started walking to his family home.
On the way, he became angry about
some issues arising at the hospital.
While walking, he saw a man mowing
his lawns and decided to stab him. At
his family’s house, he took a steak knife
from the kitchen drawer and put it in
his pocket.
But as he went outside, he thought it
was too close to home and did not want
his own family to witness anything.
he saw a woman walking. He took out
Gnome job too hard for Phil and Dawn
• By Tony Simons
WATER CHARGES protestor
Phil Yarrall has enlisted the
Mr Fixit of Christchurch, Phil
Mauger, and the mayor’s close
ally, city council chief executive
Dawn Baxendale.
The grass outside Yarrall’s
place in Linwood hasn’t been
mowed for more than four
months as a protest against the
city council “unfairly” charging
him for water. He expects to get
a water bill very shortly, but said
he won’t be paying it.
So as his campaign rolls along,
Yarrall consulted Henry Sunderland,
the well known gnomologist,
and who should arrive at his
Woodham Rd property – Phil
and Dawn.
Said Yarrall: “The berm has
become a bit of an eyesore and a
fire hazard . . . but then Phil and
Dawn offered to help.
“Phil told me he’d like to mow
the berm because he likes to get
stuff done and he thinks water
charges are unfair too, but it was
a big job and, in the end, it was
too hard.”
So the berms remain unmowed,
but Yarrall has managed
to keep his protest in the public
eye with the help of Sunderland’s
creations.
Yarrall says the city water
charging rules are discriminatory.
Residents are given a free
allowance of 700 litres a day, on
average. That’s about six showers
a day, or the same as leaving the
garden hose on full for about 45
minutes.
After that, ratepayers are
invoiced $1.35 for every 1000
litres extra they use, based on
meter readings taken every three
months, but almost a quarter of
households will not be charged
at all. That’s because they share
meters with neighbours, so individual
usage can’t be calculated.
Yarrall uses lots of water
because his 700m2 property has
a large vegetable garden, a glasshouse,
more than 20 trees, plus
seedlings and plants in pots.
The charges are unfair, he said.
“Our water comes from the
same place dairy farmers and
overseas water bottlers use for
free. Growing our own food is
better for our health and the environment,
but the city council
punishes us for it,” he said.
There is also no recognition of
soil type by suburb, said Yarrall.
“A garden like ours, but in
New Brighton with its sandy soil,
would probably need twice the
water.”
While Yarrall said he won’t be
paying his water bill, he hopes
Phil and Dawn may visit again
– perhaps after the city council
gets around to mowing the grass.
HARD YAKKA: Phil Yarrall and his partner
Amanda Stephens discuss mowing the berm
with Phil and Dawn.
ON THE JOB: ‘I’m not sure we can do this,’
said Dawn. It was a big task and, in the
end, Phil said it was too hard, Yarrall said.
Locals say the
city council
mowed the
berm last
week.
Berms a thorny issue
RESIDENTS complaining about their
neighbours’ overgrown grass berms are
being told by the city council “berm
maintenance is the responsibility of
property owners” – but that may not be
the case.
A resident who complained last month
about overgrown grass verges in Waltham,
outside three properties locals say are
abandoned, was told by the city council to
take it up with the owners, believed to be
townhouse developers based in the North
Island.
But the city council has told The Star
it has no policy that says residents must
maintain their own grass berms.
“It is not residents’ responsibility, but the
council does expect residents to do it, if
possible,” a city council spokesperson said.
“Our messaging on that has remained
consistent.”
The cost of maintaining berms is covered
within the city council budget and
the cost is funded by rates. The city council
will maintain berms if the condition
deteriorates significantly. The spokesperson
also said council contractors will mow
berms six to eight times a year depending
on the seasons, if they need it.
When asked if it might consider providing
more bins for residents who agree to
maintain road frontages in their street, the
city council said it does not offer additional
or larger bins for free as each property
already has bins for green and food waste,
paid by rates.
However, it seems the city council might
be open to the idea of using grass berms to
grow wildflowers or even vegetables, but
“any diversification of road reserve assets
would need to be council approved” the
spokesperson said.
Over the last four months, the city
council has received 66 complaints related
to berms.
First home-buying friends team
up to make $300,000 profit
• By Catherine Masters
TWO FRIENDS have proven it’s
possible for first-home buyers to
team up to take on the housing
market and come out winners.
Sick of paying rent “just
friends” Keeva Irving and Nathan
Lewis got together about
five years ago to buy a house
which they sold two weeks ago
for $300,000 profit on the purchase
price, enough to make a
big difference to their respective
home ownership paths.
The house on Sevenoaks Drive
in Bryndwr cost them $550,000
in 2017 and sold at auction for
$850,000.
Both work in project management,
which is how they met.
In their mid and late 20s at the
time, the pair put their business
hats on to conduct extensive
research before the subsequent
purchase of their house, which
they lived in together and sometimes
with flatmates to accommodate
their separate travels.
Irving said they each saved like
crazy for the deposit and they
specifically wanted to buy in an
area with good schools and good
resale.
“We literally got the white
board and a cork board out and
we had a map of Christchurch
and we drew around the school
zones. We said ‘we don’t want to
go here, here and here and we’re
flexible on those areas’,” she said.
Each listed their wants – she
wanted a log burner and a
garden – and cross-referenced
against areas, their budget and
the number of bedrooms.
Irving said they were clinical
about the purchase because they
knew they were buying to one
day sell.
“It was quite hard because we
had a lot of people say to us it
won’t work and it could get complicated
and everything like this
so we were quite aware it was a
business decision.
“We had to remove a certain
DEAL: Keeva Irving and
Nathan Lewis outside the
home on Sevenoaks Drive
in Bryndwr which they
recently sold at auction for
$850,000.
amount of emotion and there
would be times when he’d be
travelling and I would take on
the responsibility and vice versa.”
Irving said they did not have a
watertight legal agreement, saying
they were told because they
were not a couple they would
have been affected by the brightline
test if one of them wanted to
buy out the other.
But they each made their will,
which involved having a conversation
about what would happen
if one of them died, and the
result was an agreement that one
person would have first option to
buy the other out.
Sometimes there were difficult
conversations over the years
and sometimes it was difficult
to work out the financial split
exactly when one of them was
travelling, but Irving says it has
worked out around 50/50 and
they have not had a cross word.
They re-mortgaged last year
to take out $60,000 each. Irving
said with the sale of the house
each of them will get around
$140,000 once the legal fees and
commission are taken out.
That is money each can use for
their current properties – she has
bought with a partner and Lewis
is building with a partner.
Her advice for anyone contemplating
buying with a friend is to
make sure there is mutual trust.
“Don’t just go in with someone
because they’ve got some money.
You have to trust. You have to
be able to have those difficult
conversations but continue the
friendship, and you have to be
able to pull your weight and
know they’ll do theirs and look
after each other and be open and
honest financially.”
The pair both had full control
over the finances and also had a
kitty of money so if something
needed doing, they could access
the kitty and get it done.
For this pair, the end result
has been fantastic. They were
happy with a pre-auction offer
of $760,000 which brought the
auction forward but on the day
they watched rapid bidding send
their profit up.
“I’m still quite shocked,” said
Irving.
Bayleys Christchurch general
manager of sales Rachel Dovey
said not many friends bought
together but Irving and Lewis
had an exceptional trust level to
make the deal work.
“It’s not common. I think
you’ve got to have very good
friendship and you’ve got to have
a good financial understanding,”
she said.
“You’ve got obligations to the
bank and when people are coming
in and out, like flatmates,
you’ve got to keep your ducks in
order.”
Dovey acknowledges it is probably
easier for first-home buyers
to get on the housing ladder in
Christchurch because prices
are lower than in Auckland and
other centres.
“The median sales price is in
the $700,000s so technically a 10
per cent deposit is a lot cheaper
than $1m sale which is $100,000.
“We do see a lot of young people
who own property here and
values have gone up so some of
those people bought at $400,000
or $500,000.”
81-year-old
surf club
member’s
close call
• By Tony Simons
“DON’T BE complacent.”
Those are the wise words of
advice from 81-year-old Dave
Bradley, one of the swimmers who
got into trouble at Taylors Mistake
during the heatwave, which kept
surf lifeguards super busy.
Dave has lived in Taylors
Mistake for more than 60 years
and has been a member of the
surf club there since he was 16.
But even with his vast amount of
experience in the water, he still
got into difficulty when the sea
turned treacherous.
Dave decided to go for a swim
on the Friday leading into Waitangi
weekend, but he would end
up a bloody mess and spend five
days in hospital.
“I was down at the beach, so I
thought I’d go for a swim at the
northern end,” Dave told The
Star.
“I wasn’t going out far. I just
wanted to catch (body surf) a
couple of waves, but I missed the
first and went to catch the second
when I realised the rip had
dragged me towards the rocks. If
I had caught that wave it would
have dumped me on the rocks.
“I knew what was happening
but, given my level of fitness,
which hasn’t been great this year,
I decided not to do the normal
thing and swim out through the
surf. I would have been in even
more serious trouble if I had. I
knew I could get out over the
rocks, so I elected to clamber out
that way with the waves washing
me over the top.
“A young guy came down
from one of the baches to give
me a hand and he helped me
out,” he said.
Others then arrived and
walked him to the Taylors Mistake
Surf Life Saving Club.
His injuries were extensive, but
not life threatening. Club patrol
operations manager Ian Rae said
Dave was covered in blood.
Said Rae: “It was probably the
worst I’ve seen as far as blood and
the like. There were four of us
looking after him with another
two passing bandages over.”
Dave, a Taylors life member,
said it probably looked worse
than it did because he was taking
blood thinners. He spent five
days in hospital waiting for a
skin graft operation to the back
of his right hand.
“I should have been more careful
assessing the conditions that
day.
“The lesson I’ve learned is not
to be complacent.”
Army sex assault case: Victim accused
• By Emily Moorhouse
A WOMAN who says she was
sexually violated by a New
Zealand Army officer in a hotel
room has been accused by
the defence of making up the
allegations as a distraction from
her own “bad behaviour”.
During cross-examination,
defence lawyer Elizabeth Bulger
accused the woman of making
up a “charade” to make the officer’s
life difficult – something
she denied.
The officer, who has interim
name suppression, appeared
for court martial for a trial that
began on Monday at Burnham
Military Camp.
The officer faces one charge
of sexual violation and three
charges of assault after allegedly
slapping the female colleague
across the face twice, pouring
a drink over her, and sexually
violating her in 2017 in a hotel
room.
He admitted to pouring a can
of Red Bull over the woman before
slapping her across the face
in June 2017. He denied the second
charge of slapping her in the
face and sexually violating her in
a hotel room a month later.
The officer is charged under
the Armed Forces Discipline Act
1971 and Crimes Act 1961 and
appeared before Judge Kevin
Riordan and a panel of military
members.
On Monday, military prosecutor
John Whitcombe said the
pair, both in their 20s, arranged
to meet at a hotel room overseas
for a sexual encounter for the officer
to “get some anger out”.
But what was supposed to be
consensual, allegedly turned
violent and forceful, leaving the
woman crying and vomiting.
However, Bulger suggested on
Tuesday the entire sexual encounter
was consensual and the
complainant gave no indication
that she wanted to stop.
Bulger suggested the woman
lied about the events in the hotel
room to create a distraction from
her own “bad behaviour”, claiming
she was being investigated
for her conduct and faced being
removed from her army duties
for a separate matter.
The woman rejected
this, denying there was an
investigation or what happened
during the sexual encounter in
the hotel room was consensual.
Bulger referred to messages
between the pair prior to the
sexual encounter, which showed
the officer saying it wasn’t his
intention to leave her “bleeding
and in pain” and that if she
needed him to stop then he
would.
Bulger put it to the woman
martial is
HERALD
the pair had previously engaged
in consensual “rough sex” and
things like slapping and choking
were normal.
She agreed but said the sex was
never as forceful as it was during
this particular encounter, and
she had never cried from sex as
she did on this occasion.
Bulger alleged the officer didn’t
slap her across the face when he
first entered the hotel room like
she claimed, but only slapped
her during sex which was
consensual. The woman denied
this.
Bulger went on to say the
woman and officer had sex a
second time that night which
was less rough and the officer
then fell asleep, giving her the
opportunity to leave, but she
stayed.
In closing her crossexamination,
Bulger accused
the woman of making up a
“charade” to make the officer’s
life difficult by creating
false allegations to act as a
“smokescreen” for her own
conduct. This was rejected by the
woman.
A few days after the hotel
room encounter the woman
sought medical treatment for her
swollen face and bloodshot eyes,
telling medical staff the swelling
was due to a new mascara she
had tried at the time before she
laid the complaint.
A doctor who specialises in
injuries analysed photographic
evidence of the complainant’s
eyes and said it looked like
the woman had suffered from
haemorrhages in both eyes,
something that was uncommon
in young people.
The doctor said the
haemorrhages in young people
can be caused by ongoing
coughing, extensive vomiting,
pressure applied around the neck
or gagging.
She said the woman’s
account of what happened in
the hotel room is an “entirely
reasonable explanation” for the
haemorrhages.
HILLS BOUTIQUE
CHRISTCHURCH’S LANDMARK SHOPPING PRECINCT 363 COLOMBO STREET, SYDENHAM

of ‘charade’
Bulger asked the doctor if the
haemorrhages could have been
caused without the officer holding
the woman in place as she
had claimed.
The doctor said it was possible
the injuries could have been
sustained without someone being
held in place, but she thought if
someone’s airway was blocked,
they would have pulled away if
they could.
A pre-recorded interview was
played to the court of the officer
being interviewed after the complaint
was made.
The officer said the woman
didn’t show any signs of wanting
to stop during the hotel room
encounter and when she vomited
it caught them both by surprise.
He said after she vomited, they
stopped straightaway, got her
cleaned up and after about 15
minutes, continued to have sex
before falling asleep.
He said some of the messages
he had sent her leading up to the
sexual encounter came across as
“worse than what actually happened”
on the night.
While he messaged her saying
things such as “I’m likely to slap
you hard and be rough” he said it
was made clear that if the woman
wanted to stop then they would.
He said over the 48 hours after
the encounter her eyes were
bloodshot, which he accepted
might have been caused by the
sexual activity, but said at no
point did she try to pull away or
stop the encounter.
The court martial trial is likely
to finish today.
WHEN ADAM Letchford
was caught with stolen meat
and a quad bike in a truck he
pinched from a primary school
his explanation was simple: He
had been kidnapped by gang
members.
He told police he had been put
in the back of the truck by the
gang members, who he said later
stopped the vehicle on the side of
the road.
When the gang members took
off, abandoning the truck, that’s
when Letchford jumped out from
the back, hopped into the front
seat and drove off, he claimed.
But his tall tales didn’t wash
with police and the 37-year-old
was charged with the thefts.
When he appeared in the
district court he had a change of
heart and admitted the offending.
According to the summary of
facts, on December 4 last year
around 10.30pm, Letchford
entered Burnside Primary School
which at the time had an area of
it under construction.
Letchford cut a hole in a fence
that was securing the construction
site and broke into a truck.
He removed the vehicle’s GPS
and pulled its ignition.
After cutting a padlock, Letchford
drove the truck out of the
area, damaging the school’s gate
and plants in the process.
At the time, he did not hold a
valid New Zealand driver licence
and had been verbally forbidden
by police from driving.
Letchford headed to Kaikoura,
arriving at a farm about 3.45am.
There, he unlatched the metal
gate and drove into the shed area.
He loaded items on to the truck
such as a quad bike, three boxes
of meat, a firearms safe with
locked compartments, firearms
magazines and ammunition, a
270 Winchester bolt-action rifle
and three .22 rifles.
Letchford left the farm and
was heading south towards
Christchurch when the truck was
The police were also called.
Letchford stopped the truck in
some time in nearby bush before
he was approached by the witnesses.
Police arrived shortly after and
arrested Letchford. They found
the stolen quad bike and meat in
the truck but the firearms and
ammunition were not recovered.
Letchford told police he had
• By Darryl Baser
A FEW BLISTERS and lots of money
raised for mental health.
That was the outcome for tradie Alex
Grogan, who competed in the two-day
Kathmandu Coast to Coast in gumboots.
And he even produced a quicker time
than the previous year when he was
wearing shoes for the agonising event.
“I have blisters on both of my pinky
toes, which look a bit swollen, but nothing
major,” Grogan, 30, said.
He ran the event in gumboots to raise
money for the I Am Hope mental health
charity, founded by entertainer Mike King.
Grogan wanted to raise $100 for every
one of the multisport event’s 243km, but
he beat the target with ease. The givealittle
page is now closing in on $30,000 and is
open till Saturday.
Grogan said he has had his own issues
with mental health and wanted to take
away any fear people – mainly men – may
have of admitting vulnerability. He also
lost a friend to suicide about 11 years ago,
which was a big wake-up call.
“Stigma is a perfect word. I think over
the last four or five years, I Am Hope
and (others) have been working towards
making it acceptable to say: ‘Hey lads,
I’m not doing that great and I am seeing
someone professionally’,” he said.
“I’m your typical Kiwi bloke, I love footy,
like having a couple of beers, but I can
say: ‘Yeah I see a counsellor, but I’m fine
and I live an everyday life’. If that inspires
another person to see a counsellor, then
that’s a win for me.”
Grogan, from West Melton, finished the
Coast to Coast in 18 hours and 20 minutes.
“I was 20 minutes quicker than I did the
year previously not in gumboots, maybe
due to race experience. I’d done a lot more
cycling ahead of the race this time around
as there is a lot of cycling in the event. I
think it paid off and I kept up with the
bunches a lot better.”
He wore two pairs of socks, footy socks
over business socks.
Although it is early days, Grogan says
he’s thinking about entering a team of
gumboot-wearing competitors next year.
THE NEWEST store in the
Smiths City line-up of retail
stores has opened in Hornby.
Located in new shopping
centre, The Railyard, the
2300sq m store is the fourth in
Christchurch, offering the same
extensive range of leading-brand
furniture, home appliances and
consumer electronics customers
have come to expect from the
long-established retailer.
The store had its soft opening
on February 3, with plenty of
foot traffic seen from then into
the following week, general
manager of marketing James
Matthews said.
The official grand opening was
held over the weekend, which
James described as “a roaring
success” with hundreds of people
attending.
“Smiths is excited to extend
our Christchurch base with
another store,” James says.
“Even before we opened,
people were enquiring over the
phone and through social media
about it, and that was really
pleasing for us.”
The store is strategically
located to service the large and
growing area on the south-west
side of Christchurch, James says.
“We are pleased to be able to
make all that we offer at Smiths
City more accessible to people
right across the area.
“And as a 100 per cent Kiwi
owned and operated business,
Smiths City has always been
part of the community and we’re
excited to be supporting locals in
Hornby.”
While Smiths City is the only
business currently operating
at The Railyard, James said the
outlook for the store is positive,
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
with solid foot traffic already,
and even higher customer
numbers expected when other
As a leading New Zealand
country, Smiths City also sees
supporting the local community
as an important aspect of its
operation wherever it is located.
“Here at Hornby, we are
looking for opportunities to
support local charities, sports
teams and events where we can,”
James said.
‘Dynamic period’ of print
making goes on display
Adele
Younghusband’s
exhibition at
Christchurch Art
Gallery Te Puna
o Waiwhetū.
SHOWCASING the often overlooked
medium of printmaking, a new
exhibition at Christchurch Art Gallery
Te Puna o Waiwhetū shines light on
one of the most dynamic periods of art
history.
Ink on Paper is the first exhibition in
New Zealand to cover this progressive
period of printmaking, from the 1910s
to the 1950s, and includes rarely seen
works from household names like Rita
Angus, Evelyn Page, Colin McCahon
and Bill Sutton, alongside works by
lesser-known artists.
“Ink on Paper includes striking work
by people you may never have heard
of, like Nancy Bolton, Gertrude Ball,
Hilda Wiseman, Adele Younghusband
and Hinehauone Coralie Cameron. This
show brings them to the fore, and gives
their prints the attention they’ve always
deserved,” said curator Peter Vangioni.
The exhibition features more than
100 etchings, lithographs, woodcuts,
wood-engravings and lino cuts by New
Zealand artists working at home and
abroad.
“By the early 20 th century, printmaking
was undergoing a remarkable revival
in the West. As photography replaced
traditional lithography and woodengraving
techniques in the commercial
print industry, artists were quick to
embrace these suddenly obsolete print
mediums and incorporate
them into their practice,” Vangioni said.
The majority of works in the
exhibition are from Christchurch Art
Gallery’s collection.
“We’ve been acquiring work with this
exhibition in mind, strengthening the
gallery’s print collection. The rest are
on loan from institutions and private
collections throughout New Zealand.
In some cases, we’re displaying the
original lino block alongside the finished
product,” said Vangioni.
The exhibition runs till May 28.
Gin Wigmore: Expect lively mix of
old and new at Selwyn Sounds
• By Darryl Baser
AMERICAN-BASED Kiwi
musician Gin Wigmore is
leaving her husband, fellow
musician Jason Butler, and their
children, Pascal, 6, and Izaiah,
3, back in the US for her New
Zealand tour, which kicks off
with Selwyn Sounds on March 4.
“Unfortunately I am leaving
my babies, husband and dear
doggie at home in LA whilst I
play this next run of shows. I will
miss their cuddles, chats and
love so much,” she said.
“But they know I need to do
this for my soul to live, grow and
be great. So, they get it. Plus, my
kids love getting their dad all to
themselves.”
Speaking from her home in
California, Wigmore said she’s
looking forward to returning to
Canterbury, having last played
here at the Isaac Theatre Royal
in 2019.
She said the crowd at Selwyn
Sounds can expect to hear some
of her famous songs like Oh My
and Black Sheep, along some new
material.
“A lively set, full of old and
new songs. My band is awesome
and such incredible players so
I can assure everyone a whole
lot of fun on hopefully a (very)
sunny summer day.”
Wigmore was in New Zealand
earlier this month and played
at the Opotiki Lantern Festival
before returning to the US to be
with her family.
She has released four albums
since 2009. She has just finished
writing a new record, with the
first single from the forthcoming
album released on Valentine’s
Day.
The song is called Someone’s
Gonna Die Tonight.
“I think that day is kinda
ridiculous, so I thought it would
be funny to release something
a little morbid, sort of the polar
opposite of Valentine’s Day.”
Wigmore is now an American
citizen, and credits living in the
US with helping to lift and
challenge her as a songwriter.
“I think the ingredients I use
for what goes into creating a
song have grown immensely.
“With more life experience
and the ability to work with a
huge amount of highly talented
individuals in all sorts of genres
I was not too familiar with prior,
has allowed me the confidence to
now write in those genres too –
or at least borrow from all styles
to create a new kind of sound for
me.
“I often feel that with more
life experience brings about new
perspectives, a more relaxed
point of view for me in this
case. And I feel this new record
reflects the ‘zoom out’ on what
life looks and feels like for me
now.”
While Wigmore works with
musicians in the US, she is
playing with her Kiwi band on
this tour – Dave Goodison and
Joe Walsh on guitars, Hannah
Elise on bass, Adam Tobeck on
drums, and Matthias Jordan on
keyboards.
At Selwyn Sounds, Wigmore
will share the stage with Blam
Blam Blam, Australian music
legends Hoodoo Gurus, Mi-Sex,
Greg Johnson, Stellar* and New
Zealand music’s elder statesman
Sir Dave Dobbyn.
• Selwyn Sounds is on
March 4 from 11am-
8:30pm at 15 Meijer
Purdon has punt on gallops as
another stable change looms
KNOCK: Matt Hay could lead
Burnside West into the club
one-day final with victory on
Sunday.
Burnside
to extend
unbeaten
run in semi
• By Jaime Cunningham
BURNSIDE WEST are
favourites going into the premier
club one-day finals on Sunday
after an unbeaten round-robin
campaign.
The team, captained by Canterbury
Kings player Matt Hay,
will play Heathcote after finishing
top of the round-robin competition,
while second-placed
Sydenham will take on Old Boys’
Collegians.
East Shirley batted well to
knock Lancaster Park out
of semi-finals contention on
Saturday, with some strong partnerships
through the top and
middle order to finish on 254/4.
This meant Heathcote
qualified for the play-offs, even
though they were unable to defend
their score of 301/7 against
Old Boys’ Collegians. Nic Clark
led the batting for OBC, with 129
runs from 111 balls, but a late
flurry of wickets for Heathcote
wasn’t enough to stop the home
side winning in the last over.
Sydenham will be confident
going into their semi-final
against OBC, after chasing down
Riccarton’s first innings score
of 235/10 with 83 balls to spare.
Bevon-John Jacobs will be a key
wicket for OBC this weekend,
after he smashed yet another
century (120 not out off 103
balls) in Sydenham’s nine-wicket
win last week.
Alex Tait will be hoping he can
be the saviour for Burnside West
again this week, after he took
3/32 in his nine overs bowling
and made 43 runs (not out) to
ensure the side kept an unbeaten
record leading into the play-offs.
Teams will resume the two-day
competition on Saturday.
CHAMPION harness trainer
Mark Purdon has revealed the
extent of his thoroughbred
training ambitions as his All
Stars stable gets ready for its next
evolution.
After recently being joined in
partnership by his son Nathan
the most feared stable in harness
racing continues to undergo
changes as Purdon seeks new
professional challenges.
And the biggest of those
changes will be Purdon trying
his hand at training thoroughbreds,
having purchased three
yearlings at the recent Karaka
sales.
“First and foremost, Nathan
and I are in partnership and that
isn’t going to change any time
soon,” said Purdon.
“But as people have seen over
the last few years (partner)
Natalie (Rasmussen) and I have
taken more time away from the
business, which last time was to
travel.
“I am fully involved back in
the business now, but Nathan
and I have also discussed the future
and because I want to spend
some more time working on
the gallopers or even away from
horses in the off season, Nathan
and his partner Mikyala (Lewis)
officially take over running the
All Stars business from April 1.
“That is the start of the new
financial year and means the
business and things like employment
contracts can pass to them
but I will still very much be part
of the actual training.”
Purdon, 58, said Nathan and
Mikayla will be in charge of the
day to day running of the business
side of the stable. Purdon
will be senior training partner
but with the freedom to spend
time doing other things, such as
moving into training thoroughbreds.
While he harbours no delusions
of challenging Mark Walker
or Andrew Forsman any time
soon, Purdon says his increased
interest in the thoroughbred
code has come about for several
reasons.
“I think harness racing is facing
real challenges and, while
I still enjoy it, I also want to
investigate what my future and
that of the boys (Nathan and
his other son Michael) may look
like,” Purdon said.
“I really enjoy watching the
good gallops meetings and want
to be more involved so I bought
three yearlings at Karaka and
also have a two-year-old that I
will train later this season when
I get through the major harness
IN THE MARKET: Mark Purdon (right) and Barry Purdon buying gallopers at the Karaka
yearling sales. Below – Nathan Purdon and his partner Mikyala Lewis will officially take
over running the All Stars stable on April 1.
races. I have applied for my
gallops training licence so hopefully
they approve it soon.”
Canterbury trainer Danny
Frye will break Purdon’s
horses in and even do some
pre-training if needed. But
eventually Purdon hopes to be
able to do slow work at the All
Star’s Rolleston property where
he has treadmills and a straight
track, while fast work will be
conducted at Riccarton.
“That is obviously a long way
off but I have had chats with Samantha
Wynne (top Canterbury
jockey) about doing some track
work riding for me so I am putting
plans together.
“It it is exciting, the prospect
of taking on a new challenge, but
I am not under-estimating all
the stuff I still have to learn.”
Purdon has achieved everything
possible in harness racing
in this part of the world with a
record that leaves no room for
argument he is Australasia’s
greatest ever harness racing
trainer. Now Purdon is reevaluating
his entire future.
“I am still very motivated and
want the best for our owners and
horses and I will still be driving
a lot but eventually I would like
to slow down on that front and
we are already taking to Blair
Orange about doing more of our
driving.
“But a lot of this is planning
for the future, whether that is
the near future or further down
the track.
“I have run a big business for
a very long time and if I want to
make changes there have to be
plans in place.”
While Purdon’s future could
be dual-code for the next few
months it will be about trying to
dominate the rich races coming
up at Cambridge and, hopefully,
Alexandra Park if the Auckland
weather ever allows that flooddamaged
surface to be repaired.
The father-and-son team have
the unbeaten Millwood Nike
as a red-hot favourite in her
$150,000 Harness Million tomorrow
night, while they have a
trio of three-year-olds taking on
the northerners in the $200,000
male pacing final.
“Most of them trailed at Pukekohe
on the weekend and were
good and, while Merlin is the
one to beat in the boy’s race, the
draws have evened things up.”
Stable stars Self Assured and
Akuta are also up north and will
start racing in two weeks as they
build toward The Race by Grins,
worth $1 million, at Cambridge
Paris comes to
the Mainland
for fresh start
• By Jaime Cunningham
PARIS LOKOTUI is regarded
as one of New Zealand’s most
promising players – and was on
the cusp of a Silver Ferns debut
before injury struck.
In May last year, the Central
Pulse mid-courter faced her
greatest obstacle yet, after she
ruptured her anterior-cruciate
ligament in her left knee against
the Southern Steel.
Now eight months after
surgery, the 21-year-old has
moved to Christchurch, and will
be playing for Mainland in the
National Netball League.
“I came down here in the last
week of January, and decided at
the start of February I wanted to
move, so [the decision] was quite
recent,” she said.
“[Netball Mainland] have a
really good support system down
here and I thought I would grow
as a person living in a new environment
as well.”
In Wellington, Lokotui made
her mark in the Queen Margaret
College senior A team, before
being selected in the Central
Manawa team during her last
two years of school in 2018 and
2019.
In September 2021, Lokotui
was selected in the Silver Ferns
squad to play the Taini Jamison
series against England but did
not get on the court. She looked
to be in contention for last year’s
Commonwealth Games squad
before injury struck.
CHANGE: Paris Lokotui has almost recovered from the injury she sustained playing for the Central Pulse and has now joined
the Mainland National Netball League side after moving from Wellington to Christchurch.
PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES
She is now in her fourth year
of a Bachelor of Commerce,
with a minor in te reo Māori, at
Victoria University and hopes
to study and work while playing
netball in Christchurch. But her
main focus is getting back on
the court. Mainland coach Tania
Hoffman said Lokotui’s move
was slightly unexpected, but she
is excited about what she’ll bring
to the young team this year.
“It was a lovely surprise. Being
able to call on someone with
her experience is great for all
the other players and, for Paris,
it’s a good way to return to
professional netball,” Hoffman
said.
Mainland will have several
opportunities to train with the
Tactix this season after last year’s
Covid restrictions prevented
them training together.
With just five Mainland
players returning to the side
from last year’s squad, Lokotui
will be a key leader within the
young and inexperienced team.
She said watching the
Silver Ferns’ success at the
Commonwealth Games was a
motivation to work harder as
she completes her final stages of
rehabilitation over the next few
weeks.
“It really fuelled the fire to get
back to where I was. I was so
close, and the good thing about
an injury is that it kind of fuels
that fire behind close doors.”
Although it’s a while away
yet, Lokotui said staying in
Christchurch next year and a
potential stint with the Tactix is
a possibility.
“There’s so many positives
about moving away from home.
I just want to enjoy myself
wherever I am and play some
good netball,” she said.
Another reason for Lokotui’s
move to Christchurch is to spend
time with her brother Cody
who is in his second year at the
Crusaders Academy.
“I came to visit him in the
middle of December, and I
realised how much I missed
him.”
Their father Lua Lokotui
played rugby for Tonga in two
World Cups. The family often
share lessons from their sporting
experiences to help each other
out. “Having someone so close
to me who’s been involved in
high-performance sport, it’s been
really good. I’m really grateful
for my dad’s support,” she said.
The humble but determined
Lokotui said her goals for the
year are simple: “To play a full
game and [make] sure I take
every opportunity as it comes.”
•Mainland’s first game in
the National Netball League
will be against the Marvels
and broadcast live on Sky
Sport from Christchurch
Arena at 2pm on March 12.
It will be the curtainraiser
Cashmere looks strong ahead of clash
• By Diane Keenan
CASHMERE WILL be looking
to avenge their first round loss
to Burnside Park when the two
rivals meet in the premier men’s
tennis interclub competition on
Saturday.
Burnside Park lies in second
place behind Elmwood in the
competition with Cashmere in
third.
Burnside Park was upset 1-5
by Bishopdale on their home
courts at the weekend, with
junior Jake Parsons the only
Burnside player to secure a win.
Cashmere is coming off the
bye and is expected to field a full
strength team. Their stalwarts
the Meredith brothers, Matt,
Tim and James, have been in
great form over the Christmas
break with all winning national
titles at the New Zealand
Masters Championships, along
with Burnside Park’s top player
and coach Remi Feneon who
did not play singles against
Bishopdale.
After last week’s win
Bishopdale captain Tom Paine
said his team goes into this
weekend’s clash against bottom
of the table Edgeware-Waimairi
full of confidence.
“We’ve got a great team which
has performed consistently over
the season. Some of our losses
have been very close and could
have gone either way. We will
definitely hoping to do well
again on Saturday,” Paine said.
Bishopdale’s Will
Schneideman is a strong No 1,
who is well supported by Taylor
Nelson and Thomas Hunter.
In the other clash, Te Kura
Hagley will play South Brighton
at Te Kura, while competition
leaders Elmwood have the bye.
The women’s competition
features competition leaders
Burnside Park Bishopdale and
third placed Te Kura Hagley on
Friday night.
Burnside Park Bishopdale
was tested by Elmwood last
week, before securing the win
on a games countback. Juliette
Ma and Rebecca Dellaway won
their singles for Burnside Park
and Louise Oxnevad and Emma
Mason scored singles wins for
Elmwood, with honours shared
in the doubles.
Te Kura Hagley was soundly
beaten by a full-strength
Cashmere Red, a win that
moved Cashmere into second on
the table.
Cashmere Red with its wealth
of young talent, including Ruby
Young, Lucia Gale, Nishitha
Maarka, along with captain
Jenny Blackburn, should be
too strong for bottom-placed
Waimairi this week.
Elmwood plays Cashmere
Black with an interesting clash
possible between the number
ones, Oxnevad and Tessa
McCann.
TRAINING PROGRAMME
weeK sIx: Taking the next step up
This week you are going to use the fitness
you have built up in the last 5 weeks. You should now
feel comfortable with the rhythm and technique of
the jogging movement and you can maintain this for
a longer period of time (this applies especially for the
beginners group). For the intermediate runners there is
a bit of pace change at the Wednesday run. Remember
the different training intensity zones?
Zone 1, easy: this is a pace whereby you are not too
puffed and the talk test is not even a test. At this stage
this is the zone you spent most of your time in as it will
give you some initial conditioning without the risk of
soreness or muscle strain.
Zone 2, steady: this is slightly faster than easy; it can
also be called a “firm” pace. It takes a bit more effort to
talk but you can still form sentences without having to
take an extra breath.
Zone 3, moderately hard: this is the pace where you
need that extra breath to finish your sentence. You can
still talk and jog at the same time but it becomes more
laborious so you tend to shut up and concentrate more
on your rhythm and holding your pace.
Zone 4 and 5 only apply to competitive runners and
are not recommended for beginners and recreational
runners. In these zones the oxygen supply does
not keep up with the oxygen demand so you get
really puffed to the extent that you cannot have a
conversation. This pace interferes with the enjoyment
of what you are doing and is not necessary if your main
goal is to finish the event rather then competing.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have
and 1 session per week is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally build
towards between 30 and 50 minutes with
one longer session of 60-90 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace,
also called conversation pace. That means a
pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk
you are going too fast and you are likely to
come to a grinding halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
Many of you will be stretching vigorously
before and/or after your training session.
You do this because others are doing it
as well. There is not much evidence that a
conventional stretching routine prevents
injury or keeps you flexible. There is no
real need for stretching unless you have
a specific problem with particular muscle
groups and you have been advised by
a physiotherapist or doctor to stretch.
The most effective form of stretching for
flexibility is yoga, but you will have to do
it on a daily basis and for a minimum of 20
minutes and for most of us it will not make
us better runners.
Building a home is one of the most
exciting and rewarding projects but
can also be stressful with thousands
of decisions to make during the build
process.
Step one should be working out what
the priorities are for everyone who is
going to live in the new home and create
a wish list. There are several ways to do
this so everyone feels involved. Start with
a list of every room, including outdoor
areas, and then talk through what the
priorities would be in that area.
If you both want an island or a
peninsula in the kitchen also think
about the function - to add extra work
space, provide storage or a breakfast bar?
This will influence the size and shape
and whether you need to add electrical
outlets.
Within your wish lists there will be
items that are not necessarily roombased
but part of the whole home, for
example, storage, heating, electrical
outlets or lighting.
Is there a way for storage to take up
less space and make it more accessible?
Options include a walk-in linen closet,
walk in wardrobes, a full height broom
cupboard in the laundry, window seats,
built-in shelving or entertainment area,
pull-out pantry, shoe racks, drawers or
shelves in the bedroom wardrobes.
The type of heating can depend on
the direction that your new house will
face in terms of how much sun it gets.
throughout Christchurch
Are heated floors a priority, or ducted
heating rather than a fire or heat pumps?
Building a home?
Start with a wish list
electrical outlets is also something to
think about before your build. Gone are
the days when one plug is each room was
enough. While increasing the number of
electrical outlets may seem like a small
thing, but will add flexibility when you
start placing your furniture around your
home.
Lighting is another essential thing to
discuss before the build. A skylight at the
front entrance can add both natural light
and drama. A skylight in the bedroom
means you can look up at the stars. All
can add a huge impact to the way you
live.
Don’t forget the outdoor area. You
might want space for a trampoline or
play area or prefer an outdoor kitchen
or dining area. Think about providing
shelter from the sun or wind and what
your priorities would be – a bar, pizza
oven, fire, television, dining table or
another seating area?
Part of the fun and excitement of
building your home is being able to
translate your ideas and dreams into
reality. A little time now will make sure
that your home will work for you and
your family.
Rodger Fox Big Band are Dennis
Chambers, Gregg Bissonette and Peter
Erskine.
Rodger Fox says, “e Big Drum Off
concert tour will feature all three renowned
drummers on stage and performing
alongside the Big Band for the rst of ve
concert tours celebrating the Band’s 50th
Anniversary. is ‘drum-off’ will be a
performance to remember. e combined
power of these three incredible drumming
talents, in tandem with the Big Band’s
sound, is not to be missed.”
Dennis Chambers is the man Carlos
Santana called a Master Drummer. He is a
drumming legend who has recorded and
played with artists including Santana, Steely
Dan, Parliament/Funkadelic, John Scoeld,
e Jacksons, e Brecker Brothers, Victor
Wooten, Mike Stern, and many others.
Dennis is known for his ability to perform
with impeccable and funky timing in
– but he is perhaps most noted for his jazzfusion,
funk, and Latin music playing.
Gregg Bissonette is a jazz and rock
their recent recording Reimagined!
Peter Erskine has appeared on 700
Doctorate from the Berklee School of
Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Diana Krall, Pat
Rodger Fox says he is looking forward to
collaborating with these three celebrated
American drummers who will also take
part in the Big Band’s ‘Jazz on the Road –
Changing Lives through Music’
programme. Jazz on the Road is an exciting
and challenging series of one-day
workshops and concerts delivered by the
Rodger Fox Big Band, featuring
international jazz musicians and educators.
“Man!!!!! To think we are now about to
celebrate half a century of jazz aer the rst
rehearsal at the Wellington Musicians Club
in Wigan Street so long ago. at really
blows my mind, to be very honest about it.
"I hope you come out and join the fun
while we present a series of concerts to
remember alongside a spectacular guest
‘drum-off’ featuring three of the world's
greatest drummers - Gregg Bissonette,
