e Brick is back
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Shuttered for four years, the historic Red Brick Tavern in
Lafayette officially reopened on Valentine’s Day to a packed house.
The new owners said they are already feeling the love.
“We had no idea the following this building had,” said Kyle
Massey, who owns and operates the business with his brother,
Travis.
“Even though we’re from a bigger city (Lewis Center), we were
raised old-school, so we like the atmosphere here and how everyone
is always helping each other,” Travis said.
Kyle previously worked as assistant food and beverage director
at The Ohio State University. He oversees front-of-house operations
at the Red Brick. Travis has always had a passion for cooking and,
for the new business venture, honed his skills in several commercial
kitchens over the past year. He is the restaurant’s head chef.
The brothers came to own the iconic restaurant and bar, built in
1837, thanks to a leisurely drive through the countryside over a
year ago.
“I collect antique cars. I was in my Model T on Route 40 when I
drove by the Red Brick. I had never been to London before,” Kyle
said.
He saw the property was for sale, inquired, and the rest is history—a
lot of history—which the Masseys are preserving through
restoration and remodeling efforts, as well as nods to past menu favorites.
(Yes, they will be serving the famous Red Brick cinnamon
rolls. Yes, beloved bartender Kelley Meredith, a fixture at the Red
Brick for almost 40 years, is back behind the bar.)
Kyle and Travis have poured a lot of effort into renovations. One
of the first changes past patrons will notice is the bar is now located
in what was known as the Presidents Room.
The former bar area will become a private
meeting space with room for up to 40 people.
The switch affords a more efficient use
of space, the brothers said, backing the bar
up to the kitchen and giving bar patrons
more room.
They’ve also reworked the plumbing and
electricals, hooked up to county water service,
installed new bathrooms, redecorated
the dining room, replastered all the walls,
restored a lot of the woodwork, and changed
out light fixtures. New historically accurate
windows are on order.
“Anything you can think of, we’ve been
crawling around in it,” Travis said, referring
to the wide range of renovations they have
tackled so far.
Still to come, Kyle said, is installation of
a patio for outdoor seating, tuck-pointing
the exterior brick, and returning the fireplaces
to working order. And that’s not all.
The Masseys hope to convert the second
floor into rooms for short-term vacation
rentals, bringing the building back to its
roots as a stagecoach stop halfway between
Springfield and Columbus. The last time
the Red Brick rented out a room was 1937.
“As the building evolves, we want to
evolve with it,” Kyle said.
Strings are the thing in build-n-play ukulele class
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
If someone had told Tim Tanner at the
start of his career in vocal music education
that one day he would lead a course on how
to build and play a musical instrument, he
likely would have laughed in their face.
“I have no background in playing string
instruments. All of my previous attempts to
learn how to play string instruments have
failed, and I am certainly not the one you
call when you need to fix things around the
house,” he admitted with a grin.
But much to his surprise, Tanner, vocal
music instructor at London City Schools, is
teaching just such a course as he nears the
three-decade mark in his career.
“This has been an unexpected turn of
events, but I have to say that I could not be
more excited to be involved in this new
course offering, nor could I be any prouder
of the results that have come out of this program,”
he said.
The idea for “Ukulele: Build-N-Play”
began to form in the winter of 2020 when
Tanner was experiencing a prolonged period
of boredom during pandemic-related
school closures and the discouragement of
public gatherings as the holidays approached.
“I had been doing a lot of puzzles to keep
my mind occupied, and I was looking for a
bigger challenge,” he explained.
That bigger challenge came in the form
of a build-it-yourself ukulele kit his wife,
Valerie, bought for him as a Christmas surprise.
Valerie knew her husband had always
wanted to learn how to play a string instrument,
and she thought he might finally find
success with the ukulele as it is more “userfriendly”
than its bigger relative, the guitar.
“It’s much lighter than a guitar, it’s much
shorter than a guitar, and it only has fourstrings
which is more forgiving on your fingers
and hands,” Tanner said. “It really is
the perfect instrument for all ages and abilities,
and I’m not sure why I never thought
to give it a try earlier.”
As he began to assemble his StewMac
ukulele kit, a new idea popped into his head:
Messenger photos by Dedra Cordle
London High School senior Julie Betz sands portions of her
ukulele. After all the frets and strings are on the body, she will
paint the instrument to personalize it.
Teaching students at the high school level,
especially those who have had no interest in
taking choir or band, how to build and play
the ukulele.
“I began documenting every step and
every mistake that I made during the
process,” Tanner said. “I knew that if I was
really going to do this, I had to know where
things went right and I had to know where
things went wrong in order to troubleshoot
for the students who would take this course.”
Within months, Tanner had built his
first ukulele and learned how to play chords
from the songs of some of his favorite 80’s
rock artists.
“I don’t think I can accurately describe
the sense of pride I felt at building my own
ukulele and learning how to play it, not proficiently
to be certain, but just learning how
to play it,” he said. “I knew that these kids
would feel the same way if given the chance.”
That chance came during the 2021-22
school year when Principal Michael Browning
advocated for “Ukulele: Build-N-Play” to
become a course offering at the high school.
Tanner says 12 students signed up for the
initial course and word quickly spread.
Logan Weiner, a junior, said positive
word-of -mouth is why he decided to take
the course this semester.
“I have no skills at guitar, no wood building
skills under my belt, and I’m not really the
most artistic person, but some of my friends
who took the course said how fun it was to
take and that is why I am here,” he said.
Tim Tanner, vocal music instructor at London City Schools, displays
a ukulele he and several high school students built during
his class, “Ukulele: Build-N-Play.” This particular ukulele and case
will be raffled off during the school district’s S.T.E.A.M Festival on
April 1.
He added that the course has lived up to
the hype.
“We’re still in the build phase, but it has
been really cool to learn how to make a
ukulele with my own hands,” he said. “I
can’t wait until we learn how to play it.”
With nearly 20 weeks in a semester, Tanner
has broken the ukulele class into two
phases. The first phase is a 10-week build
during which students assemble the body of
the ukulele, smooth and sand, add the frets,
line up the strings, and personalize the instrument
with their own artwork. During
the second 10 weeks, Tanner encourages
students to listen to their favorite songs,
study the chord progressions, and repeat the
tablature on their ukuleles the best they can.
“My expectation for them is not to want to
begin a career as a ukulele player, although
you never know what might spark a new interest,”
he said. “I just want them to be proud
of the fact that they have built something
with their own hands, that they have done
something different and learned how to play
chords from some of their favorite songs. The
biggest pleasure I have had so far during this
course is seeing them be happy, seeing them
carry their ukuleles around the school and
showing them off to their friends.
“I really was not sure this class would be
a success when it started, especially since I
was new to building ukuleles and playing
ukuleles, as well, but I am so thankful I am
able to be a part of this and to see the joy
that it brings to those who take this class.”

When it comes to the
food, Travis is going with
a small menu to start and
will add more items as
time goes on. (A prime rib
special is planned, as is a
children’s menu.)
Currently, entree options
include an 8-ounce
filet mignon with Bearnaise
sauce ($39), salmon
with bourbon glaze ($24),
and chicken marsala
($24). Each entree comes
with a choice of two sides.
The alfredo pasta dish
($21) comes with garlic
salad or soup and the option
to add chicken or
salmon for $6 more.
Sandwiches include a Nashville hot
County and West Jefferson races
One countywide seat—Madison County municipal
court judge—is up for election this year. No one filed a
petition for candidacy for the primary election. Eric M.
Schooley currently holds the position. The seat comes
with a six-year term.
Michael Conway and Ray Martin filed petitions to
run for West Jefferson mayor (four-year term). The village’s
charter requires three or more candidates to file
in order for the mayor’s race to appear on the primary
ballot. So, Conway and Martin will appear on the Nov.
7 general election ballot instead.
Deadline for independent candidates
Independent candidates have until 4 p.m. May 1 to
file petitions with the BOE to appear on the Nov. 8 general
election ballot. Call the BOE at (740) 852-9424 for
more information about which races qualify.
Recently, Madison County Special Olympics celebrated its 2022 award winners. They include: (from left) Mike
Ellis, Athlete of the year; Carrie Kuhn, Coach of the Year; Wesley Pierce, Volunteer of the Year; Keith Smith of
Madison Community Housing, Organization of the Year; Josh and Tyler Caines accepting the Fan of the Year
award on behalf of their family; and Chad Burks, Savannah’s Heart of a Champion award winner.
Mike Ellis is a king when it comes to Special
Olympics golf. Ellis was selected to not only represent
Madison County but the entire state of Ohio at the 2022
USA Games held in Orlando, Fla. All he did was earn a
first-place finish.
“He has shown great maturity, dedication, and has
excelled at the game of golf,” said Lincoln Comer, director
of Special Olympics and community recreation for
the MCBDD. “After a flurry of rounds versus stiff competition,
Mike forged ahead and brought home the gold
for Team Ohio on the last day of the tournament.”
By using methods learned through connections she
made during the COVID-19 hiatus, Carrie Kuhn reinvigorated
the Tigers’ powerlifting program and earned
Coach of the Year honors. She led the Tigers to medals
in the State Summer Games last year when they returned
to The Ohio State University in full force.
“Carrie and her son immersed themselves in the
sport during the pandemic to help deal with the mental
and physical aspects it affected,” Comer said. “Once restrictions
were lifted, she got back to work and her mission
to revitalize Madison County’s powerlifting program.”
Kind, courteous, and helpful are just three words
used to describe Wesley Pierce, Volunteer of the Year.
“When it comes to volunteer work, Wesley Pierce is
a Madison County staple,” Comer said. “There is no job
too big or too small, and each task he performs is treated
with the utmost importance.”
Again this year, Madison County Special Olympics
honored an organization that has offered support to enhance
the program. This year’s recipient of the Organization
of the Year award is Madison Community
Housing (MCH).
MCH’s contributions made it possible for athletes
and coaches to stay in Bowling Green, Ohio, during the
2022 state basketball tournament.
“The Madison Community Housing Board has long
been a major contributor to our county’s Special
Olympics program,” Comer said. “Through their generosity,
our athletes were afforded the opportunity to
Super dedication to virtually all Madison County Special
Olympics activities is one of the main reasons Josh, Natasha, and
the rest of Caines family were the top choice for Fan of the Year
“They show up to softball games, basketball games, football
games, track meets, or wherever their beloved Tigers may be,”
Comer said. “It is the constant support and inspiration from fans
like the Caines family that help our teams reach their goals.”
Special Olympics athlete Chad “Coach” Burks was honored with
the Savannah’s Heart of a Champion Award for his dedication to
Madison County Special Olympics.
Named in memory of former Special Olympics athlete Savannah
Throughout his life, he volunteered with children’s ministries.
His favorite was going with volunteers from Church of Glad Tidings
in Austin, Texas, and spending Saturday mornings ministering to
children who lived in the disadvantaged area in east Austin.
After retiring and moving to Ohio, he slowed down a little. He
enjoyed singing in his church choir, attending men’s Bible studies,
and going out for lunch with Pastor Jerry and his pals. He also volunteered
with Loving Care Hospice in London, visiting and reading
to patients. Gary will be greatly missed.
A memorial service was held for Gary on Feb. 11 at Faith Assembly
Check out Scooby and Lucy
The following are among the
pets up for adoption at the Humane
Society of Madison County.
Scooby
Scooby has arrived at the shelter.
No, he isn’t a Great Dane like
the cartoon character, but this
“snausage” sure is cute. He is approximately
1.5 years old and
weighs in at 65 pounds. (He needs
to cut back on the treats, to be totally
honest.) Shelter staff believe
he is a black mouth cur/hound
mix.
He is a little anxious at the
shelter but has come to fit in well,
doing very well with his dogfriendly
testing. He would prefer
to avoid dogs who are rude. He
could do well with cats, too, with
slow introductions.
Scooby keeps his kennel clean,
even over night. With a knowledgeable
owner who has some patience
and who will let Scooby
decompress the first week or so in
their home, this boy will be a fantastic,
loyal family dog.
Adoption fees for dogs vary:
shelter dogs are $180, prison dogs
are $250, puppies are $300, and
popular pure-breeds are $400. The
price includes: a Home Again microchip,
set of shots, deworming,
heartworm testing (if old enough),
Scooby
estimated birthdate of Dec. 20,
2015, and is such a lovebug. She
may look a little crabby at times,
but it’s just her natural look. And
did you see those beautiful baby
blues? She purrs up a storm and
loves nothing more than to be
snuggled up on a warm lap or cozy
couch.
She is a quiet girl and never
makes a fuss. She would do really
well in a quieter home but could
likely acclimate to a busier home.
With proper introductions to other
kitties, dogs, and children, she
would do just fine.
The adoption fee is $100 for kittens
up to 6 months old and $80
for cats 7 months and older. It includes:
a FeLV/FIV test (if old
enough), spay or neuter, set of
shots, deworming, and a one-year
rabies shot (if old enough). Fees
can be paid by cash or credit card.
Working on their Brownie badges
ONLY $130.00
Brownie Troop 5248 visited West Jefferson
Hardware on Jan. 28 to meet owner Carol
Beachy who helped the troop work on some
Brownie badge requirements.
Beachy talked about first working at the
hardware store, then purchasing the store.
She explained the work that goes into keeping
a business running smoothly and the importance
of good customer service. The girls
also learned about how Beachy gives back to
the community with donations, hosting
events for groups and organizations, and
alowing organizations to use her store for
fundraisers. Examples include Humane Society
bake sales, Easter bunny cakes sales for
the Down Syndrome Association of Central
Ohio, and candy bar sales for the American
Cancer Society.
Beachy explained that her store is more
than a hardware store. She also carries greeting
cards, cleaning supplies, gardening supplies,
poison ivy soap, and paint. She holds
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day craft events
where children can make gifts for their parents.
Brownie Troop 5248 visited West Jefferson Hardware: (front row,
from left) Olivia Chapman, Ella Herring, Madison Anderson, and
Elizabeth Burgett; (second row) Sophia Chapman, Emi Herring,
Jacquie Baker, and Layla Spezzalli; (back row) troop leader
Karla Fry, Holly Fry, Ruby Fry, and store owner Carol Beachy.
