Gotha resident Bill Cowles,
Orange County’s longest-serving supervisor
of elections, announced that
he intends to retire at the end of his
current term, Jan. 6, 2025. He has
been an integral part of the Orange
County Supervisor of Elections office
since 1989. Prior to joining the
elections team as chief deputy, Bill
served 13 years on the staff of the
Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts
of America. He was elected as the
Orange County supervisor of elections
in 1996 and was reelected in
every election since. Bill supervises
the fifth-largest county elections office
in the state of Florida. “It has
been the role of a lifetime to be
trusted by the citizens of Orange
County to conduct secure elections
with the highest standards of integrity,”
Bill said. “After a fulfilling 33
years (which will be 35 years at the
end of the term), first as chief deputy
and now supervisor, it is time to
pass the torch and retire to private
life and enjoy time with my wife and
four grandsons.”

Martha Harriman,
CPA, was appointed
interim board chairperson
of Dave’s House.
During her one-year
term, Martha will be the
first woman to lead the
nonprofit’s work to end
homelessness for men
and women with serious
mental illness through
the development of
permanent supportive
housing. She succeeds
Adam Schwartz of
Schwartz Coaching &
Advisory Inc., who completed
his three-year
term in 2022. Martha,
a longtime Dave’s
House advocate, previously served
as board treasurer and an executive
committee member for nine years.
During this time, the nonprofit established
best practice accounting
procedures and met solid financial
objectives year-over-year.

This year, Woodlands of
Windermere’s homeowners association
combined its annual meeting
with the community’s Chili Cook-off.
Residents who attended the meeting
ate delicious food and mingled with
their neighbors. The Chili Cook-off
winners were Heather Mangum,
Heather Mangum (right), Nancy Borkes (center)
and Marjorie Dillingham place first, second and third,
respectively, at the Woodlands of Windermere annual Chili
Cook-off.
