Property market
Auctions
holding
up
• By Catherine Masters
AUCTIONS IN Christchurch
are still going strong as the
housing market continues to
tremble.
Harcourts Gold managing
director Chris Kennedy said
his office sold 11 properties
under the hammer out of
16 called last Thursday. The
bidding was “fierce”.
“That is a good day. The
doom and gloom that’s being
portrayed across the media
is not what we’re seeing in
Christchurch – the country’s
bigger than Auckland,” he
said.
Bidders “scrapped it out”
over a home on Mt Pleasant Rd
(above). Set on 1436sq m and
with garaging for five cars, the
bidding opened at $750,000
with the property selling for
$1.11 million.
The four-bedroom home
with views of the sea and to
the distant Kaikoura Ranges
was marketed as “renovate,
demolish or sub-divide”.
Another home that saw
“phenomenal” action was on
Hackthorne Rd in Cashmere.
Bids opened at $900,000,
the property was called on
the market at $1.551 million
and sold for $1.575 million
with two bidders in “an all-out
scrap.” •Turn to page 4
City2Surf
countdown
– three
weeks to go
CHRISTCHURCH’S most
iconic fun run is just under three
weeks away from returning to its
original course for the first time
in more than 10 years.
The Les Mills City2Surf
will celebrate 50 years when
Cantabrians take part in the
event on Sunday, March 19.
Because of damage caused
to the original route by the
February 22, 2011, earthquake,
the event was switched to start
at Pioneer Stadium and finish
at Ferrymead Historic Park for
several years.
But this year participants will
start in the central city and follow
the Avon River to New Brighton’s
Rawhiti Domain – a similar route
to the first years of the event.
Star Media regional manager
Steve McCaughan said returning
to the old course and distances
has created a lot on interest
among traditional and new
supporters of the event this year.
15,000 expected for iconic event
•From page 1
Said McCaughan: “It’s a
special year being our 50 th and I
am aware that we have runners
participating this year who were
on our start line 50 years ago.”
About 15,000 participants
are likely to take part. The full
12km route starts at Latimer
Square at 9am, and finishes at
the City2Surf village at Rawhiti
Domain. For those that want
to take part but find the 12km
distance too long, the 6km route
starts at 9.45am at Avon Park
and also finishes at Rawhiti
Domain.
“The beauty of our event is
that it is designed to cater for
everyone, competitive runners
to recreational joggers and
walkers, everyone can do the
6km course and it’s the perfect
goal to get you motivated and
moving,” McCaughan said.
“One of our more colourful
entrants this year is Camilla
the Gorilla from the What Now
team. She will be on the 12km
start line with her supporters
and I understand is very excited
about doing the event,” he said.
Crystal-balling the future:
What will shape the region
MORE THAN 2000 residents
have so far taken part in an
online survey on how Greater
Christchurch should develop as
its population grows rapidly.
Greater Christchurch’s
population is growing rapidly
and forecast to double to a
million people over the next 60
years or even earlier.
Mayor Phil Mauger is
urging people who live in
Christchurch, Selwyn and
Waimakariri to take part in the
engagement which continues
until March 26.
“The discussion to shape
where and how the area will
grow in the future, how our
transport infrastructure can
be future-proofed and how we
protect the environment now
and for future generations is an
important one. We have got to
look ahead.” he said.
This work also includes a
potential ‘turn up and go’ mass
rapid transit system, that both
responds to and encourages
growth along its route.
“Our residents’ feedback will
underpin the draft Spatial Plan
for Christchurch The draft plan
will be an ambitious blueprint
for the future. It goes out for
formal consultation later this
year,” said Mauger.
Minister of Transport
Michael Wood said the Greater
Christchurch’s public transport
network requires significant
changes to make it a viable
option for its residents, who have
some of the highest dependency
on private motor vehicles in the
country,
“Residents views are
being sought on a turn up
and go public transport
service that is more reliable,
sustainable and high frequency
so residents want to make the
switch from using private cars
and can do so with confidence,”
Wood says.
“The service would run along
a dedicated corridor from the
central city north to Belfast and
south-west to Hornby. This turn
up and go service would create a
strong connected spine through
the city, helping reduce travel
time and making it easier for
people to get to where they want
to go.
“We’re also exploring what
type of mode will be best suited
for the proposed route, either
Bus Rapid Transit or light
rail, but it would be frequent,
convenient, zero emission and
be able to move large numbers
of people.”
Bus routes
changing
to solve
cruise ship
problem
• By Tony Simons
BUS ROUTES through Lyttelton
are changing to try to solve the
congestion problem caused by cruise
ship passengers.
It’s one of a number of immediate
changes being made after the Te Pataka
o Rakaihautu Banks Peninsula
Community Board faced angry protests
from locals at its meeting two
weeks ago, complaining about cruise
ship passengers hogging the buses,
creating congestion
and preventing them
from from getting to
and from the city on
time.
Board chair Reuben
Reuben
Davidson
NEWS 3
Davidson told Bay
Harbour News several
measures are now
being taken to alter the cruise ship
transport operation. The most
significant change is buses returning
from Christchurch to the terminal
will go directly to Norwich Quay
without stopping, and not through
the town, he said.
Said Davidson: “This will reduce
the volume of buses on the township
loop route, and also reduce
the demands on the temporary bus
stop space outside the information
centre. One cruise ship company operator,
Carnival, has also agreed to
hold off sending out passenger to the
Lyttelton shuttles until after 9am.”
Winchester St resident Steve
Hodgson welcomed the move. He
is terminally ill and said the high
number of noisy buses trundling
past has caused him stress and
worry. “At one stage there was a bus
every minute,” he said.
Davidson said the changes are
positive. “Our port commuters
need to know they can reliably get
to school and work on the bus, and
these measures should help give
them that certainty.”
Additional buses and an express
service will run on the No 28 route.
Henstock defends cycleway vote
• By Tony Simons
A CITY councillor whose
election campaign centred
around stopping a controversial
cycleway has defended her
apparent U-turn on the issue just
months after being elected.
Victoria Henstock vehemently
opposed the planned Wheels to
Wings cycleway
in Harewood
during the lead
up to the October
local body
elections.
It was one of
Victoria
Henstock
the of, if not the
key battle in the
Papanui Ward,
which saw sitting
councillor Mike Davidson – a
cycleway advocate – ousted and
Henstock elected.
Many
businesses along
Harewood
Rd oppose
the cycleway,
saying it is over
engineered, will
Mike
Davidson
be dangerous
for cyclists and
motorists, and
take away car parking which will
affect business.
City councillors, including
Henstock, last week voted
overwhelmingly not to delay
the project. Councillors were
asked to decide how to progress
spending of the Government’s
use-it-or-lose-it Climate
Emergency Response Fund –
Transport Choices.
Henstock defended her
decision.
“We were being asked to
decide which Government
funded projects should be part
of that programme of works
and which should be deferred to
mitigate the impact of additional
work,” she told The Star.
“A no vote would also have
placed us at risk of losing out
on that Crown funding and
placed additional pressure on
our already over-loaded work
programme,
“Council officers informed us
repeatedly that we have serious
deliverability issues and that
we are under extreme financial
pressure,” she said.
Davidson told The Star the
decision from councillors shows
clear support for the Wheels to
Wings.
“I am really pleased the council
has decided to proceed with this
really important road safety and
climate project but disappointed
that attempts to cancel or delay it
appear to be ongoing.”
It was local school
children who first asked the
city council to improve
Harewood Rd so they can
bike to school, he said.
Staff deemed the cycleway
project was too risky to defer
and has previously been given a
very clear directive to prioritise
CERF-funded projects for
obvious reasons, said Henstock
CONTROVERSIAL:
The city council’s
preferred design for
the Wheels to Wings
cycleway between
Nunweek Blvd and
the Bishopdale
roundabout.
Right – Donna
Thomsen says the
loss of car parks
outside her bakery
will hurt the business.
Harewood Rd will lose on-street
parking if the cycleway is built.
Owner Donna Thomsen said
she is more confused than ever
following the vote last week
but is confident Henstock will
continue to oppose the multimillion
dollar project.
“What upsets me most is other
more deserving projects around
the city are now being deferred
while this one is allowed to
proceed,” Thomsen said.
Said Henstock: “I struggled in
good conscience to support the
revised programme or works. In
the end, I simply had to accept
the executive officer’s advice,
but I did request it be recorded
I wanted the Wheels to Wings
cycleway on the deferment
list and I will still be pursuing
that through the Annual Plan
process.”
Asked by The Star why she
did not abstain from voting on
the issue, like Cr Yani Johanson
did, Henstock said: “I prefer
to be pragmatic. I want to be a
facilitator and get stuff done.
Fundamentally, I want to
progress spending the CERF.”
At the city council meeting,
Banks Peninsula city councillor
Tyrone Fields had a crack at
Merivale residents.
In response to a remark from
Cr Aaron Keown, Fields said for
every person that says “bloody
cyclist” there are 10 people
saying “effing Merivale tractors”.
Fields told The Star it was a
throwaway remark.
“I am sure no one was offended
by it but, if they were, they have
probably got some bigger things
in their lives to worry about,” he
said.
Bowel screening finds
they are easier to treat
“Māori die too
is something you
can do to stop that
happening, then
you should do it.”
– Ann Bergman, Māori
Witness testimony under spotlight
• By Kurt Bayer
A KEY witness in the bodiless
murder case has today been
reminded by a defence lawyer
that his job is not to give
evidence to “fit in with the police
theory”.
A port worker claims he saw
two men outside a semi-rural
property on May 22, 2017,
which fits the time and place
former Corrections officer David
Benbow is accused of murdering
Michael McGrath.
Benbow, 54, had asked
McGrath to visit his Candys
Rd, Halswell property at 9am
that day to help him shift some
railway sleepers.
But Benbow claims he
never showed up and denies
having anything to do with his
disappearance.
The Crown claims Benbow
shot him dead and got rid of his
body, just weeks after telling a
counsellor that he wanted to
“annihilate” McGrath who was
seeing his ex-partner Joanna
Green.
Lyttelton Port worker Stephen
Robinson yesterday gave
evidence on day 13 of the High
Court trial in Christchurch.
Port records showed that
the line supervisor had been
working early on Monday,
May 22, 2017. His first job was
about 1.30am tying up a large
container ship. After shifting the
big, heavy ropes, he had slept in
a bunk onsite, rising again about
7am when a cutter headed out
to bring in a fishing boat from
Nelson.
Records say it was tied up at
8.31am and after returning to his
office, and spending about five
minutes putting his gear away,
Robinson drove home in his
white Toyota Corolla.
Roadworks diversions took
him by “Halswell Quarry way”
and he ended up travelling down
Candys Rd.
Asked by Crown prosecutor
Barnaby Hawes what time it was,
Robinson replied: “It would’ve
been round about 9am.”
Builder Michael Craig
McGrath, 49, was last seen at his
home in Halswell, in May 2017.
Benbow allegedly arrived
slightly late for a counsellor’s
appointment in Riccarton just
after 10am that day, the court
has earlier heard.
Robinson says as he slowed for
the Candys Rd junction, he saw
two men talking at the roadside
and a dark blue Subaru parked
on the side of the road.
McGrath owned a blue Subaru
which was later found parked in
his driveway at his Checketts Rd,
Halswell, home when his brother
and new partner Green went to
check on him after he failed to
show up for a family dinner on
Tuesday, May 23, 2017.
The witness described one man
wearing a red t-shirt over a longsleeved
top and the Englishman
remembered thinking it was
a very Kiwi thing to wear.
Robinson further described the
man as being white, slim, and
fair haired.
Robinson recalls another man
who had his back to him, heavier
set, with a dark woollen top.
He passed by doing probably
20km/h as he slowed for the
junction and had seen them for
about 20 seconds, he said.
“Never gave it a second
thought,” Robinson said.
Later, he saw a TV news item
about a missing Christchurch
man but it didn’t ring any bells.
It was only two weeks later,
on June 6 while seeing publicity
on TV, which featured another
photograph of McGrath, that a
“light come on”.
The next day he was driving
his wife when they passed
Candys Rd and saw a lot of
police activity and “it all
connected” for him, the court
heard.
HIGH COURT: The Crown argues there is a strong circumstantial case to show David Benbow is guilty of Michael
McGrath’s murder.
PHOTO: KAI SCHWOERER, STUFF, POOL
On the way home, he
stopped at a petrol station
when a police car pulled up.
He spoke to the officer and his
information was passed on to
the investigation team.
But Robinson’s evidence
came under heavy scrutiny
from defence counsel Marc
Corlett KC yesterday.
“Mr Robinson, are you
confident about what you
saw?” Corlett opened by
asking.
“I hope so, yes. I would
think so yes. I saw two men
talking on the roadside,”
Robinson replied.
Corlett would go on to
stress to Robinson that he
understood the “importance
of being accurate and what’s at
stake in this trial”.
When Robinson first spoke
to the police officer at the
petrol station, he couldn’t
remember the date or time
that he saw the men.
And during his first official
statement to police on
November 12, 2017, he said
he saw the two men at about
12.30pm - and wasn’t sure
whether it was May 21 or May
22.
A second statement to
police on December 28, 2017,
Robinson said his second job
had been at 9am that morning
and he would’ve seen the men
about 10am.
Asked if it was possible
that he had seen the men on
Saturday, rather than the
Monday when it’s alleged that
McGrath went missing, he
disagreed.
Corlett also highlighted that
yesterday was the first time
Robinson has said that he was
at Candys Rd around 9am,
and that he hadn’t done so
in either of his statements to
police. The defence lawyer was
critical of Robinson’s evidence,
telling him he was not there
“to give evidence to fit in with
police theory”.
Benbow’s defence team
earlier warned the jury of
“investigative bias” and
“tunnel vision” from police
early in their investigations.
While the Crown accepts
there is no body, no murder
weapon, and little forensic
evidence in the case, it says
there is a strong circumstantial
case consisting of many
threads that, when taken
together, show Benbow is
guilty of McGrath’s murder
beyond reasonable doubt.
The trial, before Justice
Jonathan Eaton, continues.
Crime spree offender in court
• By Emily Moorhouse
A 21-YEAR-OLD made three
false calls to emergency services
within a week and even started
lighting his own fires, rushing
back to his crime scene to film
the firefighters in action after he
raised the alarm.
Caleb Pope was sentenced on a
lengthy list of charges relating to
arson and burglary last week.
Pope called Fire and
Emergency NZ four times
between March and June
last year, falsely claiming he
could see smoke coming from
Hammer Hardware and The
Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln,
he could see a vehicle in the
Waimakariri River, and he could
also see smoke coming from a
petrol station in Christchurch.
Fire fighters attended each call
but could not find any smoke or
vehicle in the river and classified
them as false calls.
On March 28 last year Pope
started a small vegetation fire
on the side of Rolleston Rd then
called Fenz, which attended and
put it out. He did this again on
May 27 on Days Rd.
A week later Pope drove, while
forbidden from driving, to a
Repco store in Hornby at 8.30pm.
He approached a mediumsized
rubbish skip and using a
lighter, set several bits of paper
on fire before throwing them in
the skip.
The fire engulfed the rubbish
inside the skip, causing severe
damage to the bin.
Pope fled the scene, called
Fenz and then returned when the
firefighters arrived to film them
in action.
When questioned by police
Pope said he was burning his
court paperwork.
Assistant District Commander
Steve Kennedy said Fenz worked
with police in relation to several
incidents involving Pope.
“False or malicious 111 calls
go through the same process as
all 111 calls, which means that
they end up taking up valuable
time of not only our 111 Fire
Communication Centre staff but
also the crews that respond to the
calls,” he said.
Kennedy said if crews were
responding to false calls that
would mean they are generally
unavailable for any genuine calls
that may come in.
Pope also faced burglary
charges involving stealing from
his elderly neighbour, who was
in hospital. He and an associate
stole a barbecue, a heavy-duty
vice, a table, a bench seat, a
compressor and a vintage engine
from the man’s shed.
Everything was sold on Facebook
marketplace to unknown
people, except for the heavy-duty
vice which was recovered during
a search of Pope’s house.
Between June 17-20 last year,
Pope and the same associate
broke into a construction site in
Wigram.
Pope had a set of master keys
and used them to unlock a digger
for his associate to climb in
and begin digging holes in the
ground.
The pair then stole two heavyduty
digger ramps, hard hats
and strops from the construction
site before advertising them on
Facebook marketplace.
Pope and his associate also
broke into a Christchurch City
Council-owned sports building
in Wigram, stealing a football
launcher. This was later recovered
at Pope’s address.
Between October 2021 and
January 2022 Pope was employed
by a construction and engineering
firm but only worked a total
of nine days before quitting.
After termination of employment,
all employees are to cease
use of company accounts but on
four separate occasions, Pope
used the account to purchase
builder’s tools. He spent a total of
$2702 at Bunnings Warehouse in
Shirley and Mitre10 in Papanui.
On July 6 last year Pope was
working for a different construction
company through a temping
agency.
Between 4-8pm, he drove to
a construction site in Lincoln
where he had been working and
cut and ripped out copper cables
from the ground. He also stole a
hydrant stand, tools and a strop.
That same night Pope was
stopped by police driving a large
tanker truck from the construction
company during a time he
was forbidden from driving. He
also admitted to police that he
didn’t have permission from his
employers to drive the truck.
Pope was given a sentence of 15
months which could be served as
home detention if he could find a
suitable address, Judge Quentin
Hix told him.
Pope’s lawyer Sabrina Forrester
said her client had a challenging
upbringing with family members
being in and out of prison, which
was normalised in his youth.
She said violence, mental
health concerns and a mistrust
of police had significantly shaped
Pope’s perspective and could be
connected to his offending.
Forrester told the judge Pope
was a vulnerable young man who
had already been assaulted in
prison and now understands the
consequences of his actions.
Judge Hix gave Pope discounts
for his youth, remorse, challenging
upbringing and mental
health issues.
He expressed his concern
for Pope who was unable to
find a suitable address to serve
his sentence as one of home
detention.
“I just really worry because
there’s nowhere for you to go
to get out,” he told Pope before
remanding him in custody.
Mansion on sale for $1
– with a costly catch
A GRAND mansion is being
offered for sale for $1.
But buyers will have to line up
removal of the “as is, where is”
14-bedroom house from Lunns
Rd, Middleton, and fork out for
an asbestos audit.
One house removal company
estimated the two-storey over
500sqm mansion would need
to be cut into up to eight pieces
to fit on the moving trucks, and
costs could quickly build into the
hundreds of thousands.
The hair-raising ins and
outs of house removal came to
kiwi’s attention in 2021 when
former First Man,Clark Gayford,
fronted TVNZ’s Moving Houses.
It made no bones about the wise
truckies, the nail-biting perils
of winding a wide load around
country roads - or the rewards of
an old place given new life.
The 1903 mansion, which was
damaged in the 2011 earthquake,
has been the home for 75 years
for Hamilton Jet, the biggest waterjet
manufacturer in the world,
supplying customers from Shotover
Jet to US military vessels.
The company’s advertising for
the property said: “This beautiful
home has been witness to history
in the making. Now is your
chance to write the next chapter
HISTORIC: The 1908 mansion, home to global company
Hamilton Jet, is on the market for $1 for removal.
in what has already been a classic
kiwi story of forward thinking,
family value and kiwi ingenuity.”
The arts and crafts-style mansion,
was built as the summer
home for well-known Timaru
farmers Rosamond and Thomas
Teschmaker, and was the base
for their daughters during the
Christchurch ball season. It
was designed by well-known
architects Collins and Harman,
whose buildings include the The
Press and the former Canterbury
College Students Union as well
as many grand houses for the
gentry. The grand staircase,
many of the original fireplaces
and stained glass windows survived
the earthquake.
Hamilton Jets founders, the
Hamilton family, bought the
property in 1944 for a new factory,
at first using it as an employee
boarding house before making it
the company headquarters until
the earthquakes in 2011.
The $1 sale comes with some
strict conditions, the company
said, including all the costs of
an asbestos audit, professional
removal and reallocation within
three months of purchase.
Apartment plan for
old supermarket site
• By Tony Simons
THIS IS WHAT the former
Four Square and New World site
in Redcliffs will look like if it
gets city council approval.
Fletcher Living has applied for
resource consent to turn the site
on the corner of Augusta St and
Main Rd into a three-storey 22-
unit residential complex with a
commercial unit on the ground
floor. The plan is to dismantle
the first and second floors,
retain the ground floor car
park and build two new floors
of apartments above it. The
site, which had been home to a
store for more than 100 years,
will be known as the Redcliffs
Apartments.
The commercial unit on the
Augusta St corner might suit
a food and beverage or retail
outlet, the developer said.
The first and second floors
will each contain 11 residential
units with mainly two or three
bedrooms and two 50 sq m
one-bedroom units.
The resource consent will be
made under the District Plan
because it is a non-complying
activity for the zone.
It will not be notified, but
will not be subject to public
consultation. A Fletcher Living
spokesperson said the building
should cover a similar footprint
to the existing supermarket.
The spokesperson would not say
what the apartments might sell
for. “We are working through
a design process and hope to
apply for building consent later
this year. The development is
realistically 18-24 months from
completion.”
City council records show
the property was purchased by
Fletcher Residential Ltd for $5.5
million.
so much more of a relationship
with different people through
engaging in activities and
experiences than just over a
cup of tea and a chat.”
Shirley’s participation in
the activities began to lessen,
however, through no fault of
her own; her world began to
feel smaller and fun seemed to
be in short supply.
Shirley began to look at
her ongoing lifestyle and also
at a number of things that
could support her muscles
& joints. She wanted things
that were sustainable, easy to
incorporate into her everyday
life and natural. One of the
things she came across was
Koru FX from Koru Nutrition.
“I bought just one bottle
and thought I could try this.
Very soon after, I returned and
bought three bottles!!”
“I love knowing that I am
supporting myself in my
activities. I am playing Indoor
Bowls and doing very well on
that front, if I do say so myself.
I have also picked up my trusty
exercise bike and am doing
3km every day. I am so happy
to be living life to the full.”
Foote steps into CCHL chair’s role
CHRISTCHURCH-based
professional director Abby
Foote has been appointed the
new chair of city council-owned
Christchurch City Holdings Ltd.
CCHL Group includes the
city’s major infrastructure
companies, Christchurch
Airport, Lyttelton Port Company
(LPC), Orion Group, Enable,
EcoCentral and Citycare
Group.
The group employs more than
3000 people across Canterbury
and around New Zealand.
Her appointment comes after
the resignation of its previous
chief executive Tim Boyd in
September.
It was later revealed he’d
been ordered to pay millions in
damages as part of civil lawsuits
in the US. He was also wanted in
Arizona over unresolved drinkdriving
charges from 2018, Stuff
reported.
Boyd claimed the events were
entirely separate. Boyd went on
leave less than four months after
he started in the $430,000-a-year
position, Stuff reported.
In a statement released by
the city council yesterday, it
said Foote had over a decade
of governance experience in
both NZX listed and Crown
companies and has qualifications
in both law and accounting,
her executive career focused
TAKING OVER: Abby Foote is the new chair of CCHL, taking over from Tim Boyd, seen
here in a police photo while he was wanted in Arizona over 2018 drink-driving charges.
on corporate finance and
commercial transactions.
Foote has experience in a
wide range of areas including
strategic development and
implementation, mergers and
acquisitions, treasury, risk
management, health & safety and
ESG issues. She was chair of Z
Energy from 2019-2022.
She is currently on the boards
of KMD Brands Ltd, Freightways
Ltd and Sanford Ltd.
As well as Z Energy, where she
was a board member from 2013,
her prior governance experience
has also included directorships
with Transpower, LGFA, TVNZ
and Te Papa.
Said Foote: “I’m excited
to be playing a part in the
opportunities ahead for CCHL,
and to be joining a dynamic and
capable team that is focused on
investing in, and managing, key
infrastructure while delivering
a wide range of vital services
and other benefits for the people
of Ōtautahi Christchurch,
Canterbury and wider New
Zealand.
“I’m particularly pleased to
be able to join CCHL at a key
point in its ongoing development,
as it considers its role and
approach through the strategic
review.”
The CCHL strategic review
will take up to 12 months and
be considered as part of the next
Long Term Plan 2024 – 34, when
the community will have the
opportunity to provide input.
City coucnillors have been
debating whether to sell some or
all of ratepayer owned assets.
Foote said the community has
a unique asset in CCHL and the
wider CCHL Group, which has
an important role to play in the
future of the region.
“We have some big challenges
ahead – from the cost-of-living
crisis and the recovery from
the pandemic, to building
community resilience and
tackling climate change.
“CCHL will be an important
part of this for our community
and our region and I’m thrilled
to be able to support this.”
Foote will take up the role
immediately.
From hospital nurse
Karin Bos was a nurse at
Christchurch Hospital for 20
years. Now she cares for
some of the most precious
wildlife on Banks Peninsula.
Heidi Slade reports
KAITORETE IS one of the
region’s hidden, natural gems.
The 25km spit runs south-west
from near Birdlings Flat along
the southern edge of Te Waihora/
Lake Ellesmere.
Home to banded dotterel,
ground-nesting birds such as
oystercatchers and endangered
native spiders like katipō, as
well as skinks and two species
of flightless moth, the area is
also populated with pests such
as hedgehogs, mustelids,
possums and feral cats.
Bos has been working for Pest
Free Banks Peninsula for 20
months on various projects. She
is now based at Kaitorete as a
dog handler for its conservation
dog programme.
‘‘I’m excited to be a part of such
an enormous, amazing goal,’’
said Bos who lives in Little River.
Since December, she has
worked with Mobab, a threeand-a-half-year-old
border terrier
trained to track hedgehogs.
Recently the pair were
joined by Terry, a 20-month-old
welsh springer spaniel trained to
track down feral cats. PFBP has
Government funding was
PFBP operations manager
Tim Sjoberg said funding after
‘‘We are hoping that Pest Free
2050 funding will continue to the
next stage,’’ he said.
Kaitorete is one of two areas
PFBP works in, Bos says.
In Kaitorete, it aims to ‘‘get rid
of possums, cats, stoats, ferrets,
weasels and hedgehogs.’’
In the other focus area –
the extended wild side of
Banks Peninsula – PFBP
is working to get rid of all
possums and drop mustelid
and feral cat numbers to 20
per cent of what they were
when the branch began.
‘‘We are the only Predator
Free 2050 project that is
targeting that many species at
once,’’ Sjoberg said.
After spending 20 years
as a surgical and cardiology
nurse at Christchurch
Hospital, Bos said she
decided to pursue her
passion for conservation fulltime.
She has found what she calls
‘‘the ultimate job.’’
Sjoberg said PFBP is
‘‘blessed’’ to have Bos.
‘‘Her strength
is communication and being
able to work under pressure,’’
which he says comes from her
work as a nurse.
He also praises her ‘‘detailed
and concise approach.’’
It helps Bos to get in touch
with the dogs and understand
their behaviours.
Mabob and Terry live with
Bos on her property, which
she likes to call their ‘‘palace.’’
She said they benefit from
living with their handler as it
helps the dogs develop a much
stronger bond with her.
They are also expensive,
highly-trained animals, so it is
important to keep them safe.
Sjoberg said ‘‘knowing the
dog intimately so that the wag
of a tail or scratch of an ear’’
indicates they are close to a
pest is important.
‘‘These are the little signs
that Karin needs to pick up
on and she’s so good at that.
FUN: Karin Bos takes a break at the beach with Mabob (inset).
‘‘I was just blown away
with how much those dogs
love Karin.’’
While no two days are
the same, Bos will check
the ‘‘remote reporting
network’’ daily to see
which of PFBPs numerous
live capture traps have been
set off, she said. After her and
the dogs investigate, she then
lets them sniff out other
predators. ‘‘They are detection
dogs (and) they are pointing
the animal out to me . . .
I’m the one in charge of what’s
happening to the animals’’
Bos said.
Training the dogs takes
20 to 24 months and
involves expert trainer Billy
Barton from Hawea. Barton
specialises in training dogs for
conservation purposes.
Big effort behind music festival
• By Darryl Baser
WHEN THE Selwyn Sounds
music festival starts at 11am on
Saturday at Lincoln Domain, 10
truckloads of gear weighing 70
tonnes will be in place.
Event director David Parlane
says the crew has spent the
last week erecting fencing and
preparing the venue to welcome
the crowd.
“We will be at capacity on
Saturday,” he said. “It’s all
consuming at the moment, but all
is calm and everything is falling
into place at it should.”
The main stage was in at 6am
on Monday, fresh from being
used at Electric Avenue in Hagley
Park over the weekend.
“As soon as it finished on
Saturday evening the stage was
dismantled. It is on two very large
trucks and once the trucks are in
place, supports are put down, and
the roof gets put on. It is a two
day job to get the stage in place
before we can start hanging lights,
speakers, screens all those sorts of
things.”
“It’s a bit like a jigsaw puzzle,
you’ve got to start with the edges
then you’ve got to work your way
around.”
Parlane and his business
partner launched Selwyn Sounds
in 2017. Covid-19 restrictions
forced the festival to be cancelled
a month before it was to take
place last year. Parlane said even
though the team has run the
event successfully over the years
it has gone ahead, there is never
room for complacency.
To make events like this run
like clockwork there is more
going on in the preparation which
members of the public generally
never see. Sound checks for
example. All bands except Blam
Blam Blam will have arrived by
Friday morning and are spending
the day at the venue making sure
they will sound the best they can
to give fans a great experience.
“The first sound check is
11.30am Friday and the last is due
to be 7.30 that night, depending
on when bands are arriving.”
Blam Blam Blam are due
to arrive very early Saturday
morning and Parlane said they
will have time for a “line check”
before general admission gates
open at 10am.
There will 34 food vendors on
site during the day, with “more
than 200 people will be working
The team will return to the
venue early on Sunday morning
and take two days to fully pack
up. “You wouldn’t know there had
even been a festival there. A week
to pack it in, and a couple of days
to pack it out,” Parlane said.
Amazing health miracles
from the silkworm
Serrapeptase an enzyme produced in
silkworms may become one of the most
widely used natural health solutions for
its ability to replace the majority of antiinflammatory
drugs and bypass operations.
It is nature’s answer to pain, chronic
inflammation and clogged arteries. Enzymes
are essential for life. Constantly working
to build and regenerate the body, they help
digest food, break down toxins and cleanse
the blood, in addition to thousands of other
functions. A lack of enzymes in the body leads
to food intolerances, allergies, digestive issues,
disease and poor health. Studies show an
average 70-year old has only 20 percent of the
enzymes found in the body of a 20-year old.
Serrapeptase is a natural anti-inflammatory,
which can clean, clear and reduce
inflammation while dissolving non-living
tissue including blood clots, cysts, arterial
plaque and mucus. One of its major benefits is
its ability to reduce pain.
The serrapeptase enzyme was first found
in the intestine of the silkworm in the late
1960’s. The silkworm uses it to dissolve the
hard cocoon, allowing the moth to escape as
well as to digest the tough mulberry leaves it
feeds on. Serrapeptase can now be produced
commercially by a fermentation process of the
microorganism Serriata E15. It is prescribed
by doctors across Europe and Asia.
Clinical studies over the last 40 years have
shown serrapeptase to have remarkable
benefits in a vast range of health conditions
including; blocked arteries, cardiovascular,
arthritis, asthma, lung conditions, pain,
tumors, autoimmune disease and many
more. In Germany, Dr. Hans Nieper clinically
researched serrapeptase and found it could
clear blocked arteries and prevent the need for
bypass operations. U.K. pharmacist Dennis
Gore talked on BBC radio about the dramatic
results he has had with serrapeptase. One case
was a man in his 60’s who had been a heavy
smoker, was wheeled into his pharmacy. He
was breathless due to emphysema and COPD
and could hardly talk. He was on antibiotics,
oxygen and getting bad infections. Dennis
prescribed him serrapeptase and three weeks
later the man walked into his pharmacy, with
no wheelchair and no breathlessness and said
to Dennis he was no longer on antibiotics, nor
oxygen cylinders and was feeling great.
Serrapeptase has been shown to be very safe
supplement and according to researchers can
be used with most medications. However let
your doctor know as medications may need
reducing or stopping as the need for them
reduces.
NEW ZEALAND seized a series
Canterbury.
The three-match series was the
Canterbury representatives.
The second game was abandoned
were able to win on Tuesday
series decider at Ohoka.
Australia struggled to get
OBC were able to beat
Burnside West in the one-day
competition final by four-wickets
after a shaky start to their chase
at Burnside Park on Sunday.
With OBC at 7/3, chasing
Burnside West’s 219, the home
side looked likely to continue
their unbeaten streak in the oneday
format until Lewis, 25, came
to the crease.
Lewis said his sole focus was
to build a partnership with
Australian batter Dylan Hunter.
“I just wanted to spend some
time at the crease with Dylan. I
wasn’t thinking too much about
scoring runs,” Lewis said.
Hunter was then caught on 40,
leaving OBC four down with 155
to win.
Although OBC were missing
key players who were with
the Canterbury A side, Lewis
was able to build a 93-run
partnership with Thomas
Graham in the middle overs of
the chase.
Burnside West took two more
wickets, but couldn’t stop Lewis
bringing up his first premiership
century then hitting the winning
runs.
“I was just focused on getting
the team over the line, I couldn’t
be happier,” Lewis said.
OBC opener David Wakefield
and Lewis were the only
remaining players from the
2016/17 team that last won the
one-day competition. It was
also Lewis’ first season with the
premier side.
But it was his second final of
season as captain of the premier
side, after OBC won the T20 final
against Sydenham in December.
“It’s pretty awesome. It’s
something I’ll always cherish,
looking back on this season,”
Lewis said.
With only two-day matches
left this season, Lewis said
his priority will be giving the
club’s newest premier players
experience at the highest level of
club cricket.
“The focus is getting the
younger boys from Christ’s
College and [Christchurch Boys’
High] out, and giving them a
good run,” he said.
With Elmwood Park set to
get a full field reconstruction on
Monday, OBC will have no home
games after the weekend.
Lewis said the premier side
will be training at Christchurch
Boys’ High ahead of the
remaining two away matches of
the season.
Ling nets her 100th premier interclub win
• By Diane Keenan
NOTCHING UP her 100th
singles win in the premier
women’s interclub and helping
to secure her team a place in the
final gave Kerrie Ling cause for
a double celebration.
Ling’s Burnside Park Bishopdale
finished top of the table
and will take on the winner of
Saturday’s semi between Cashmere
Red and Te Kura Hagley
in the final in two weeks.
Ling, 43, can’t remember how
many competition finals she
has played in but says it’s a lot.
She played representative tennis
through the junior ranks in the
1990s then took a break before
returning to the court. Her
first recorded “top dog” points
earned in the premier interclub
were in 2007 when she was
playing for Burwood.
Ling was set to reach her 100
wins before Christmas. “But I
cut the top off my thumb off in
the kitchen and couldn’t play
for a few weeks,” she said.
But she reached the goal last
weekend when all the premier
teams were playing in the annual
away fixture at Ashburton.
As usual, she was playing
alongside Joelene Feneon and
Feneon’s daughter, Jade.
Said Ling: “I was with Joelene
when she reached 100 wins
two seasons ago and we were
playing together last Saturday.
Her advice was to go out there
and play my own game, which
I did.”
Ling is not phased by the
many talented juniors who “like
hitting the ball hard on their
forehands.” They are often baffled
by Ling’s all-round game,
which includes strength at the
net and mixing ground strokes
with slice and spin.
“Even when I’m down, I never
give up. I just change my game
plan if I need to and keep fighting,”
she said. Ling said she will
definitely continue to play tennis,
but may follow in Feneon’s
footsteps and concentrate on
doubles. The pair won a national
masters title in January.
Pool play in the women’s
competition was keenly contested
with Burnside Park (125
points) well ahead of Cashmere
Red (104), Te Kura Hagley (98)
and unlucky Elmwood (97)
which missed the playoffs by a
point.
Te Kura Hagley has a strong
pool of players to draw on for
the semi-final. Cashmere Red
lost all their matches to Burnside
Park Bishopdale last week,
but will be back to full strength.
Several Cashmere players were
absent due to commitments
at the South Island secondary
school championships at Wilding
Park.
The men’s competition has
two more rounds of pool play
before the play-offs. Leader
Elmwood play Te Kura Hagley,
while Cashmere face Edgeware
Waimairi and Bishopdale play
South Brighton. Burnside Park
have the bye.
Thursday March 2 2023 The Star
Colleen Falloon played
in the first ever netball
World Cup 60 years ago.
The 79-year-old shared
her experiences – which
includes running 152
marathons – as the guest
speaker at the Mainland
Tactix’s season launch.
Jaime Cunningham
reports
COLLEEN Falloon may not
have lived in the region for
most of her life, but she’s a true
Cantabrian at heart.
Having made her mark as a
young shooter at Christchurch
West High School in the late
1950s, Colleen (nee McMaster)
was selected in the 1960 Silver
Ferns team to play a three-test
series against Australia. Just
three years later, she boarded
a ship bound for the inaugural
World Cup at Eastbourne in
England.
“I was one of the lucky, lucky
players to play in the first world
tournament,” Colleen told Tactix
players, coaches and sponsors
last week at the Commodore
Hotel.
“We didn’t have any practices
beforehand,” she added.
New Zealand went on to win
their first game of the 1963
tournament against Northern
Ireland, setting a record that
still stands today. They won that
match by the largest margin
(112-4) in a World Cup game.
Unfortunately the team failed to
beat Australia in the competition
and finished runners-up.
“The ball was there but we
couldn’t put it through the hoop
in time,” Colleen said.
After the World Cup, Colleen
was selected in the 1969 team to
travel to Australia. She was then
picked for the 1971 Jamaica tour.
“But I wasn’t interested as I was
engaged,” she said.
Colleen made the move to
Auckland soon after, where she
started running marathons.
However, in the late 1970s only
elite male runners could participate
in races. Colleen’s first
opportunity came when she was
able to enter the 1979 People’s
Marathon, organised by Arthur
Lydiard in Auckland.
“When I started marathons,
women didn’t run and you didn’t
see older folk running around in
shorts either,” she said.
Almost 45 years later, she ran
her 152nd marathon in January.
Colleen is currently in week
five of a 14-week build-up for the
upcoming Rotorua Marathon in
May and expects to cover more
than 1000km preparing for the
race.
“I just continue following a bit
of a schedule. On Sunday we did
27km. I’ve done 7km this morning,
doing 16km tomorrow, and
10km on Thursday. Just building
up slightly,” Colleen said.
She plans to run a marathon
in Croatia in September but is
not sure how many more she can
manage.
“I don’t think I’ll get to 200.
The main thing is that I don’t
have Covid or any injuries on the
start line. Our immunity systems
aren’t as good as they used to be.”
Christchurch’s senior team
won the Longevity Shield and
the friendly team took out the
Otago Salver for the first time
after the tournaments were
brought back last year.
Otago struggled with the fast,
smooth greens on the Shirley
Saturday, the Christchurch
seniors lead 3-1 after their
foursomes. The friendly team
The Christchurch teams
prevailed on Sunday, with both
winning by 8-4.
It will be Orange’s debut at
the championships, with the
five-time Kiwi champion driver
realising a long-held ambition of
wearing the silver fern at a major
international event.
“I was hopeful I’d go and now
I’m lucky enough to be asked and
to represent New Zealand. (It) is
a real honour,” he said.
Orange will try to emulate the
feats of recent world champions
such as Dexter Dunn (2015),
Mark Jones (2003), Maurice
McKendry (1991) and Tony
Herlihy (1985).
Orange has travelled overseas
extensively, but it will be his first
foray to Europe.“It’s always great
going somewhere new and I’ll
stay on a week or so after and
have a look around.”
Domestically there are
few drivers who travel more
than Orange. On Saturday at
Ashburton it seemed he was
having a ho-hum day, a couple of
placings – nothing special. But
then he won the last five races,
all for different trainers. Records
show his haul at Ashburton was
the 12th time he has had five
or more wins at one meeting,
including twice when he had
All Welcome
Don’t let heading into winter
give you the blues. Think of
all the things you love about
the cooler seasons and give
your home a mini-makeover
to make it the comfortable,
warm and welcoming home
you desire. Revamping your
living and dining areas will
give your lived-in spaces
a fresh new feel. Unlike a
renovation, a revamp (or
face lift) need not involve a
huge financial outlay. In fact it is an extremely
budget-friendly way of giving your rooms a
new look as you can add and subtract pieces
as the pay packet allows.
Moving slowly over the next couple of
months is an advantage. If you don’t, after all,
like that bright pink cushion you had planned
to build your new look around, you can
change direction without having spent too
much money. Another advantage of moving
slowly to build your new look is the time it
allows you to hunt for just the right pieces, or
wait for the sales to offer you bargains. Also
have a look around your home for items you
could recover, paint or, with a little tweaking,
find new purpose for. Start your facelift by
deciding what sort of look you’re going to aim
for.
Browse magazines and the internet for
ideas, check paint colour charts for the latest
colour options. Visit furnishing stores and
take note of the different display areas - how
do they balance colour and texture?
throughout Christchurch
Then find an item you would like to build
your new look around. This could be a
Mini makeover gives
living areas a lift
replaced.
treasure you’ve had for a while or
something that you covet and have
spotted in a shop.
Your next step is to sit down
with pencil & paper & plan.
List what items can be changed
and how, and what can’t. Think
colour, shades and tones and
complementary colours, think
texture, think pattern, think
outside the square. Think fabric,
wood, plastic, old and new. That
comfy old chair doesn’t need to be
Buy some furnishing fabric and recover it
(or have it recovered). What items have other
family members put aside because they no
longer need them but they’re ‘too good to
throw out’?
Once you’ve got some sort of plan mapped
out you can start work on creating your new
look.
Spend time browsing the shops to see what
is available in your chosen colour - candles,
photo frames, vases, pot plant holders,
wallpaper, fabric, large items and small.
TRAINING PROGRAMME
weeK eIghT: Less than 3 weeks to go!
You are now nearing the peak of your preparation.
Congratulations if you are still following the
programme and you have been able to do most of
the sessions. This means that it is more likely that
you will make it to the start line in good condition.
If you have not been able to follow the programme
or if you have only followed it half-heartedly you
need to adjust your goals and be prepared to jogwalk
the event all the way at an easy pace. You will
get there but it will take a bit longer.
Over the next couple of weeks, you need to
become comfortable with your training pace.
Get a good feel for it because that is the pace you
will need to do for the event if you want to finish
comfortably. If you go faster than your training
pace you risk injury or you will struggle over the
last few kilometres. The weekend run is close to
the time you will be on your feet on the day of the
event. This is a key session. Try not to miss any
of the sessions over the coming 2 weeks or do at
least 3 sessions per week. If you do only 1 or 2 you
might lose some of your hard gained fitness and
be a little underprepared.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health and
fitness. First and foremost this
has to do with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To improve your
level of health and fitness you will need to
aim for 4 sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions
per week will only maintain what you have
and 1 session per week is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally
build towards between 30 and 50 minutes
with one longer session of 60-120 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done at
submaximal pace, also called conversation
pace. That means a pace where you can still
talk. If you can’t talk you are going too fast
and you are likely to come to a grinding halt
sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are
written as a guide only. If you are concerned about
your health at any stage please undergo a health
check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
If your feet are sore and aching roll your
feet over a frozen drink bottle after your
run, it can do wonders. If your shoes are
worn this is the time to replace them so
you can still “run them in”. If the shoes feel
good stick to the same brand and model.
Most specialised sport shoe shops have
personnel trained in advising people on
the right shoe wear. You can also ask a
podiatrist. Sports Clinic have a great team
of experienced podiatrists who can help.
