The full 12km route starts at Latimer Square at 9am, and finishes at the City2Surf village at Rawhiti Domain. For those that want to take part but find the 12km distance too long, the 6km route starts at 9.45am at Avon Park and also finishes at Rawhiti Domain. “The beauty of our event is that it is designed to cater for everyone, competitive runners to recreational joggers and walkers, everyone can do the 6km course and it’s the perfect goal to get you motivated and moving,” McCaughan said. “One of our more colourful entrants this year is Camilla the Gorilla from the What Now team. To enter, go to www.city2surf.co.nz Crystal-balling the future: What will shape the region MORE THAN 2000 residents have so far taken part in an online survey on how Greater Christchurch should develop as its population grows rapidly. Greater Christchurch’s population is growing rapidly and forecast to double to a million people over the next 60 years or even earlier. Mayor Phil Mauger is urging people who live in Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri to take part in the engagement which continues until March 26. “The discussion to shape where and how the area will grow in the future, how our transport infrastructure can be future-proofed and how we protect the environment now and for future generations is an important one. We have got to look ahead.” he said. This work also includes a potential ‘turn up and go’ mass rapid transit system, that both responds to and encourages growth along its route. “Our residents’ feedback will underpin the draft Spatial Plan for Christchurch The draft plan will be an ambitious blueprint for the future. It goes out for formal consultation later this year,” said Mauger. Minister of Transport Michael Wood said the Greater Christchurch’s public transport network requires significant changes to make it a viable option for its residents, who have some of the highest dependency on private motor vehicles in the country, “Residents views are being sought on a turn up and go public transport service that is more reliable, sustainable and high frequency so residents want to make the switch from using private cars and can do so with confidence,” Wood says. “The service would run along a dedicated corridor from the central city north to Belfast and south-west to Hornby. This turn up and go service would create a strong connected spine through the city, helping reduce travel time and making it easier for people to get to where they want to go. “We’re also exploring what type of mode will be best suited for the proposed route, either Bus Rapid Transit or light rail, but it would be frequent, convenient, zero emission and be able to move large numbers of people.” •The online survey is at www.greaterchristchurch. org.nz Bus routes changing to solve cruise ship problem • By Tony Simons BUS ROUTES through Lyttelton are changing to try to solve the congestion problem caused by cruise ship passengers. It’s one of a number of immediate changes being made after the Te Pataka o Rakaihautu Banks Peninsula Community Board faced angry protests from locals at its meeting two weeks ago, complaining about cruise ship passengers hogging the buses, creating congestion and preventing them from from getting to and from the city on time. Board chair Reuben Reuben Davidson NEWS 3 Davidson told Bay Harbour News several measures are now being taken to alter the cruise ship transport operation. The most significant change is buses returning from Christchurch to the terminal will go directly to Norwich Quay without stopping, and not through the town, he said. Said Davidson: “This will reduce the volume of buses on the township loop route, and also reduce the demands on the temporary bus stop space outside the information centre. One cruise ship company operator, Carnival, has also agreed to hold off sending out passenger to the Lyttelton shuttles until after 9am.” Winchester St resident Steve Hodgson welcomed the move. He is terminally ill and said the high number of noisy buses trundling past has caused him stress and worry. “At one stage there was a bus every minute,” he said. Davidson said the changes are positive. “Our port commuters need to know they can reliably get to school and work on the bus, and these measures should help give them that certainty.” Additional buses and an express service will run on the No 28 route.
