The formal declaration of a state of climate emergency across Canterbury was one of the most serious, and colourful, moments in the regional council’s more than 30-year history. A year ago this Saturday, at 11.49am, Environment Canterbury became New Zealand’s first council to proclaim such an emergency, formally dedicating itself to consideration of climate change at the heart of all it does. The declaration highlighted that all the work Environment Canterbury does – from freshwater management to biodiversity and biosecurity, transport and urban development to air quality, and also regional leadership – has a climate change focus. Currently, under the Resource Management Act, regional councils are required only to adapt to climate change, not mitigate it – that responsibility is the Government’s, but could change. Even in ‘adapt mode’ many of Environment Canterbury’s existing policies and plans already contribute to reduced emissions. Starting at 7am on Friday, March 10, Lynskey-Reid covered 23 laps of Hagley Park, a distance of 138kms, finishing at 7am on Saturday, March 11. His efforts raised more than $20,000 for the youth and community-focused support group I Am Hope. The amount was double his original target. Lynskey-Reid ran the first 14 laps, at which stage his feet had become very sore, so he biked for a further five laps, a distance of 30kms, then walked the last four laps after changing into looser shoes. “I ran two marathons in 12 hours, and by the last two laps I had to push through the pain,” he said. Support from family, friends and workmates boosted his efforts. “A busload of New Zealand Army boys arrived at the beginning and did a few laps with me. “A lot of people did laps with me, and they’d never run so far in their life. Fifty people ran the last lap and my parents and some mates were there through the whole night supporting me.” Lynskey-Reid says he felt mentally fine throughout, and physically fine apart from the sore feet. An after-function was held on the Saturday night at the Boys’ High Old Boys Rugby Club, where Mike King spoke and presented Jack with a gift. Mike founded The Key to Life Charitable Trust in 2010, which runs the I Am Hope support group. Thursday March 16 2023 The Star 23 Maadi Cup Rowing Crew 2023 Rowing is a fantastic sport for teens, it is a team sport, non-contact and extremely competitive. The aim of the St Bede’s College rowing programme is to “Make Fast Boats” and this season the boys and coaches have been working especially hard to achieve this. With recent success in Twizel at the South Island Secondary Schools Champs and New Zealand National Club Champs the boys are on target to finish the season strongly at the Maadi regatta. At the South Island Secondary Schools Regatta last weekend, the crews made 16 A Finals and backed this up by winning 8 medals; 5 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze. The next focus for this squad is the Maadi Cup - NZ Secondary Schools Rowing Regatta which kicks off on 27 March at Lake Karapiro. With a small crew of only 24 rowers and 4 coxswains the recent results are even more impressive as it shows the determination and dedication these boys have to get on the water in singles, doubles, pairs, fours and eights. The squad are expertly coached and managed by Dale Maher (Head Coach) Scott Rogers (Novice Coach) and Aaron Maxwell (Assistant Coach) along with Teacher in Charge Mr Kerry Sullivan and our Boat Park Manager Wills McIntyre.
