CGHS No 1 seed
for volleyball
national champs
• By Jaime Cunningham
CHRISTCHURCH Girls’ High’s
senior volleyball side will go into
the secondary schools nationals
as the top seed for Canterbury
after claiming two titles this
month.
CGHS beat St Margaret’s
College to win the Canterbury
championships for the first time
since 2012 on Sunday, just two
weeks after the side took out the
The Mainland shield. The school
had never won both titles in the
same season.
CGHS came back after trailing
St Margaret’s 2-1 on Sunday to
win the final 3-2 (25-20, 21-25,
17-25, 25-20, 15-13).
CGHS’s B team finished eighth
in the division 1 grade, while
the school’s C side were third in
division 2.
Senior A coach Mark Norton
said the results from the
weekend are due to the growth of
volleyball at CGHS.
With about 13,000 high school
girls playing the sport in New
Zealand, he said having three
CGHS teams in Canterbury’s top
13 is a significant achievement.
“We have some momentum
growing in our volleyball
programme, lots of kids are
playing and we are starting to
produce some good results.”
CGHS A are Canterbury’s
top seed after their win at the
weekend and strong results in the
weekly high school competition.
They will also be seeded third
overall in the competition due to
Burnside’s recent success at the
competition in recent years.
But with 88 girls’ teams
expected to compete at nationals,
Norton said it will be difficult to
finish in the top 16.
St Andrew’s College will go
to the national tournament as
Canterbury’s second seed in
the girls’ competition, while St
Margaret’s are third and Burnside
High fourth.
Riccarton High are the top seed
for Canterbury in the boys’ grade,
following their win over Burnside
to take out the Canterbury
championship title on Sunday.
Burnside is the second ranked
boys’ team for the region, with
Shirley Boys’ High in third and
Te Kura Kaupapa Māori O Te
Whānau Tahi fourth.
•The New Zealand
secondary schools national
volleyball championships
start Monday in Palmerston
North.
TOP SEED: CGHS senior A captain Angela Reupena holds up The Mainland shield which they won earlier this month. Below – The team then won the
Canterbury championships for the first time since 2012.
