A SHOT IN THE
ARM FOR YOUR
BUSINESS
One theme that really hit
home to me at the recent
SHOT Show was the
power that entering the law
enforcement and military
markets can give to your brand.
Not just from the instant injection
of cash that these deals often give
to companies, but for the resulting
positives that can be achieved for
the company as a whole, in all of its
departments.
Once your brand is being actively
used by military or police personnel,
your products are instantly elevated
to a different level. Consumers will
gain even more trust in your brand and
therefore the sector will, most likely,
experience rapid growth.
The money received from military
contracts can be invested into new
machinery, fresh products and
enhanced company infrastructure.
With regards to marketing, simply
announcing that law enforcement
personnel use your products could be
the best advertising strategy out there:
“If it’s good enough for police off icers and
soldiers it’s good enough for me!”
It goes without saying that selling
your products into these markets isn’t
easy and your products will have to
be of the highest quality, but if you
do manage to break into the sector
then big rewards are there. You often
find that some of the top sporting
and hunting rifles and shotguns are
manufactured by company’s who service
military and law enforcement. They
are able to introduce military level
technologies into consumer products,
meaning excellent performance and
reliability for customers.
Winchester awarded US Army contract
Winchester works with key groups like
the National Shooting Sports Foundation
on a variety of topics important to our
industry, including training and education,
and on specific programs such as Gun
Owners Care and Project ChildSafe.
Winchester will continue to support
programs, organizations and individuals
who promote hunting and shooting sports
activities in a positive and responsible
environment. Any use of firearms by youth
participants should be done under the
direct supervision of a parent, guardian or
other responsible adult.
About Gun Owners Care
Gun owners care. You care about safety.
You care about preventing unauthorised
access to firearms. You care about
bettering your community, helping those
in need, and conserving wildlife and wild
places for generations to come. It’s time
for gun owners to tell their stories and
to show how they’re making a difference.
LIFE WILD WOLF: Tackling situaTIOns of wildlife
approaching urban and peri-urban areas
As project partners,
the Croatian Hunting
Association and FACE,
recently attended the kick-off
meeting of the LIFE WILD
WOLF project “Concrete
actions for maintaining
wolves wild in anthropogenic
landscapes of Europe”.
The project, co-funded
within the EU LIFE
programme, enjoys a
multidisciplinary team of
18 partners, including seven
Universities or research
institutions, national and
local management authorities,
and NGOs from the
environmental and hunting
areas of interest from nine
EU countries with the Italian
Institute of Applied Ecology
(IEA) being the coordinating
beneficiary.
The project’s objective is
to develop a solid technical
baseline, developing
operating protocols that will
be tested and assessed for
efficacy and efficiency. The
ultimate goal is to provide
a significant contribution
to the most adequate
management of critical
situations where wildlife
approach humans in urban
and peri-urban areas.
The project will be
implemented in rural,
urban, and peri-urban
areas of eight EU countries
Croatia, Germany, Greece,
Italy, Portugal, The Czech
Republic, Slovenia and
Sweden, involving seven out
of the nine European wolf
populations. The project will
last almost five years with
a total budget of 7,028,148
euros (EU contribution:
5,265,454 euros). Wildlife
presence close to human
settlements is a growing
phenomenon in many EU
countries and often leads to
critical situations of perceived
or real danger. Few EU
countries are prepared to
tackle such situations with
clear and tested protocols.
The LIFE WILD WOLF
project aims at developing
and testing such protocols
based on the largest possible
number of cases.
During the project
duration, FACE will focus
on analysing and tackling the
issue of wolf-dog interactions
with a special focus on wolf
attacks on hunting dogs.
Hunting of ungulates is in
many countries conducted
using hunting dogs that are
of high economic, emotional,
and social value. Reports of
hunting dogs killed by wolves
are increasing in Europe and
hunters will be involved in
the project to implement
tools for protecting their
dogs. FACE will also
facilitate direct involvement
of hunters from the project
areas where no hunting
association is a project
beneficiary and promote best
practices developed.
www.face.eu
About
FACE is the European
Federation for Hunting and
Conservation. Established
in 1977, FACE represents
the interests of Europe’s
seven million hunters as an
international non-profitmaking
nongovernmental
organisation. FACE is
made up of national
hunters’ associations from
37 European countries
including the EU-28. FACE
is supported by seven
associate members and
is based in Brussels. FACE
upholds the principle of
sustainable use and has
been a member of the
International Union for the
Conservation of Nature
(IUCN) since 1987. FACE
works with its partners on
a range of hunting-related
matters from international
conservation agreements to
local implementation issues
with the aim of sustaining
hunting across Europe.
EG-CZ ACADEMY OPENS ITS DOORS
On Wednesday, 14 December 2022,
a brand-new multifunctional indoor
shooting range, the EG-CZ Academy,
had its grand opening in the picturesque
town of Quimper in the French province
of Brittany.
One of the world’s most sophisticated
facilities of its kind, its design and
construction was a joint effort between
Ceska zbrojovka (CZ), a leading
manufacturer of small arms, and Eric
Grauffel, a sport shooting icon and
nine-time IPSC World Champion. The
EG-CZ Academy is the first officially
approved professional sport shooting
center in France.
The grand opening ceremony was
attended by Michel Baczyk, President
of the French Shooting Federation,
and Alain Joly, Secretary General of
the IPSC. Representatives from local
government and the French armed forces
were also in attendance.
The EG-CZ Academy is housed in
a purpose-built facility with a total area
of 2,500sq/m, of which an impressive
1,740sq/m is dedicated to shooting.
Shooters can practice on reactive and
steel targets, as well as carry out training
that’s specific to competing in the IPSC.
A professional shooting program led by
top instructors, who are also members
of the CZ Shooting Team, is available
at the academy. And to add a little extra
spice to your time there, a wide range of
firearms in the training area are available
for visitors to try out.
At the EG-CZ Academy in Quimper,
a total of 50 shooters can utilise the
shooting areas at the same time.
Moreover, the biggest draw and key figure
of the entire project is Eric Grauffel,
who shot gold in the PRODUCTION
division at the recent 2022 IPSC
Handgun World Shoot in Thailand and
won his ninth world championship title!
In addition to its physical facilities
in France, the EG-CZ Academy offers
an online course for novice to advanced
competitive/recreational shooters, with
Eric as their personal instructor! The
course consists of a series of videos, where
Eric reveals the shooting techniques he’s
developed and refined over 30+ years
of competing in, and winning, multiple
divisions in IPSC/USPSA/European
competitions.
Country sports
retailer moves north
A leading UK-based supplier of country
sports and outdoors goods, Fur Feather &
Fin, will return to business after relocating
to an all-new location in Teesside Airport,
North Yorkshire, England.
Due to a substantial increase in rental
fees, the business ceased operations in
December 2022 as they searched for
alternative locations. Financial director
Paul Walton said: “It is sad to be leaving
Chichester where we have been based
since 1978, but this new facility offers great
expansion opportunities with an increase
in space available for holding stock, along
with implementing an even more efficient
and responsive ordering and fulfilment
services.”
Fur Feather & Fin has garnered a
reputation for retailing the finest shooting,
fishing, stalking and gundog products
from top brands, including Yeti, Dubarry,
Härkila, Rio, Berretta, Scott and Snowbee
to name but a few. The team has plans to
work with additional brands in the sectors
they cater for, along with developing their
own range of luxury leather goods and
accessories.
“For the foreseeable future we will focus
on online and mail-order sales, though
we are in the process of finding suitable
locations for a replacement showroom so
that those travelling north or from overseas
to shoot, fish or stalk can take a look at
what we have available before purchasing,”
says Paul.
Fur Feather & Fin will be operating
as usual with current stock ahead of the
brown trout and main salmon season, with
a greater collection of luggage, apparel and
accessories for game shooters and gundog
Bergara opens its subsidiary in France
Bergara Rifles has launched
distribution of its products
in France through its own
company BPI Outdoors
France.
France joins the United
States and Spain as the
third country where the
Bergara rifle brand will
act as manufacturer and
distributor of its weapons
and accessories. The
proximity of France to the
headquarters of Bergara,
located in northern Spain,
is less than 80 km from
the French border, and the
importance of this country
as a market share in the
hunting sector in Europe
were key factors for this
transition.
“This step represents a
bet on the French market.,”
says Guillermo Martinez,
Bergara International,
Commercial Director. “An
exciting challenge that will
give us the opportunity
to fully exploit our
commercial potential.”
This new development
halts the previous
collaboration with Verney
Carron S.A., former official
distributor of the Bergara
brand in France.
“We thank Verney
Carron for the work
accomplished over the
years, but we understood
that it was the right time
to take the plunge and
strengthen our direct
relationship with our
customers, improve the
dialogue and strengthen
the after-sales and
customer service that
gives us such good results
in the United States and
Spain,” says Rafael Serret,
International Marketing
Director at Bergara.
The new distributor,
with headquarters in Paris
and a logistics warehouse
and after-sales service
located in Hendaye, begins
its journey with the main
objective of improving
the relationship with its
customers at every level,
with a commitment to the
end user.
As Wiley X celebrates
its 35th Anniversary, the
company opened the doors to
its expansive, state-of-the-art
new headquarters in Frisco,
located just north of Dallas,
Texas.
The 65,000 sq/ft facility
has everything the familyowned,
premium protective
eyewear brand needs to run
its expanding global business:
from a large production,
assembly, and warehouse
space to a sophisticated and
expanded testing facility
for safety certifications, as
well as all the necessary
administrative and office
space. The building also
features the first-ever Wiley
X flagship retail store, which
will open in 2024 for local
customers, resellers across the
US and Wiley X fans from
around the world to enjoy.
“We are beyond thrilled to
open the doors to our new
headquarters,” exclaimed
Myles Freeman, co-owner of
Wiley X. “The City of Frisco
and the Frisco Economic
Development Corporation
have been so welcoming to
us.” From ground-breaking
to ribbon cutting, both the
city leadership of Frisco
and the Frisco EDC have
been working in lockstep
with Wiley X on ensuring
a smooth and welcoming
transition. “What a great
way to celebrate 35 years
in business,” added Dan
Freeman, co-owner of Wiley
X. “We are excited to get to
work in Texas and thankful
for all the support we’ve
received here.”
Frisco is an ideal location
for Wiley X for many
reasons. Frisco, and all of
Texas, is home to a large
population of military
veterans; Wiley X is
veteran-founded and has
been providing premium
protective eyewear to the
United States military since
being founded in 1987.
Wiley X also has a long
history of providing eye
protection for outdoorsmen
and women who hunt, fish,
and shoot, as well as the
government/first responder
network, all of which align
with Texan pastimes and
values. Frisco also provides
Wiley X with a great
business climate with a
large talent pool, and the
centralised location within
the United States provides
distribution and shipping
efficiencies.
BIGGEST EVER SHOT SHOW
PLACES INDUSTRY BACK
WHERE IT BELONGS
A packed show floor and record exhibitor space firmly positioned SHOT
– and the industry in general – back to pre-Covid times and offered a
glimpse of positive feelings for the future.
It was the 45th time that
the red carpet had been
rolled out at SHOT
Show, to welcome the
world’s hunting and shooting
industry. Although Covid-19
is still with us (the editor
picked up his second dose at
the show) walking the show
floor in 2023 didn’t feel as
though we were in the middle
of a pandemic.
Facemasks have been
replaced with hugs
and handshakes and
a determination from
everyone to build brands and
Behind the data that you
organisers post show, is the
‘feeling’ you get from a show
by simply walking and talking
for four days. Let’s call it a
‘vibe’ to be on trend. SHOT
2023 was one of those shows
that gave off a good vibe from
minute one.
The crowd was happy.
People wanted to be there.
Business was being conducted
and fun was to be had.
Talking of fun, the SHOT
organisers did a great job in
organising ‘extracurricular
activities’ for show goers who
have been starved of such
events for a long time.
The on-site All-Star
Jam Concert marked the
high point of ‘SHOT After
Dark’, a new initiative from
the organisers, that allowed
visitors to network in an
enjoyable environment.
There were many
thoughtful ideas that all
helped to increase the
positive feelings emanating
from around the show’s vast
halls.
was particularly happy with
how the show unfolded. He
commented:
“The industry was back
in full force at this year’s
and momentum among all
attendees was palpable. I
always say the SHOT Show is
Show floor reaction
Last year we told you that
80 per cent of the exhibitors
we asked said they had
experienced a positive show.
Well, this year that number
has climbed to 100 per cent.
Yes, that’s right. Not one
of the companies we spoke
to over the course of the
exhibition was unhappy with
how the show was performing
for them. They were all
happy and relieved that the
show was back to pre-Covid
numbers and all seemed to be
conducting the business that
they were expecting to.
Supplier Showcase
The two-day Supplier
Showcase featured 539 OEM
third-party suppliers meeting
with exhibiting manufacturers
and exploring their needs for
extrusions, fabrication, fabrics,
machinery, metal, plastics,
software, logistical support,
and tools.
Jeff Miller, Sales Manager
at Active Manufacturing, told
the NSSF team:
“For a company like us
with 40 people, it’s a great
fit. We can come show our
wares for two days. The
bigger companies come up
here and walk around and the
engineering people will talk
to us. We’ve done it every
year, and it’s really helped us
increase our business.”
Education Sessions
This year over 6,000 industry
members attended SHOT
University, Law Enforcement
Education Program and
Export Training Sessions to
receive in-person classes on
compliance, operations and
much more.
Traci Lewellin, Owner of
Gun City spoke to the NSSF:
“SHOT University adds an
amazing value for us. I can
come in here, I have our
managers out still looking at
booths, and I can learn some
of the educational processes
to take back to our stores and
try to implement them over
the next year.”
A word from the
President…
“This year is one of the
best shows I’ve ever been a
part of,” said Joe Bartozzi,
NSSF President and CEO.
“On behalf of NSSF, I’d like
to thank all the attendees,
exhibitors, media members
and our guests this week
for helping the industry
to succeed and supporting
NSSF’s mission.”
DEPARTMENT
OF JUSTICE PITS
PRESIDENT
BIDEN AGAINST
GUN CONTROL
LOBBY WITHOUT
ACKNOWLEDGING
FIX NICS ACT
President Joe Biden has worked in tandem with gun control
advocacy organisations seeking to disarm law-abiding American
citizens and demonise American firearm manufacturers.
By Larry Keane
While this connection
between the Biden
administration and gun
confiscation supporters
is well known, the Department of
Justice (DOJ) has threatened to
undermine that relationship by daring
to recognise the indisputable truth
that criminals are responsible for the
crimes they commit. At the same time,
President Biden’s Justice Department is
conveniently ignoring initiatives led by
the firearms and ammunition industry
that are proven to prevent gun crime
and keep communities safer.
In 2021, U.S. District Court Judge
Xavier Rodriguez found the US
government 60 per cent liable for the
2017 Sutherland Springs attack, during
which the perpetrator murdered 26
individuals and wounded 22 more at
the First Baptist Church in Texas. In
the lawsuit that followed, Holcombe
v. USA, Judge Rodriguez stated that
the US government was primarily
responsible for the incident because
the Air Force failed to report to the
National Instant Criminals Background
Check System (NICS) murderer’s
2012 domestic violence court-martial
conviction, his dishonourable discharge
and his involuntary commitment to a
mental health facility, awarding a $230
million judgment to the plaintiffs. As
a result, between 2012 and 2017, the
perpetrator was able to make multiple
firearm purchases from firearm
retailers.
Responsibility
No one – not even the government
– disputes that the Air Force failed
to report material information to
NICS that would have disqualified
the murderer from legally purchasing
firearms. In its recent appeal of the
2021 court decision, the DOJ called
the attack an “inexpressible tragedy,”
adding that it “unequivocally does not
seek to excuse” the government’s failure
to report the murderer’s criminal and
mental health history. However, the
Department’s civil division contends:
“Even if the government’s conduct
might have contributed to the sequence
of events… the man who pulled the
trigger that day cannot bear less than
half of the responsibility for causing
the injuries and pain of the victims and
their families.”
For once, the Biden administration
correctly recognises that criminals are
responsible for their crimes, even if
this admission is under the duress of
the looming $230 million settlement
the government owes the victims of
Sutherland in adherence to the 2022
ruling they are now appealing.
To be sure, attributing blame where
blame is due and fixing persistent
bureaucratic problems that failed to
prevent a violent and mentally ill
individual from acquiring a firearm
when he should not have been able to
are not mutually exclusive. Indeed, the
24 www.guntradeworld.com

nssf
firearm industry has wholeheartedly
supported and in fact spearheaded
initiatives intended to stop violent
individuals from gaining access
firearms.
Action
In the wake of the Sutherland Springs
tragedy, the NSSF advocated for
legislation that made background
checks stronger, more comprehensive
and increasingly thorough. NSSF’s
consistent efforts to strengthen NICS
culminated in the Fix NICS Act of
2018, which removed obstacles to the
proper submission of mental health and
criminal records. Obstacles that would
have, and in the case of Sutherland
Springs in fact did, impede the system’s
proper functioning.
Specifically, the Act created incentive
structures for states (to the extent
legally possible under federal law) to
improve their reporting and compels
federal agencies to report material
information to NICS that would make
gun sales to specific individuals illegal,
to close loopholes, and prevent violent
individuals from accessing firearms. It
is difficult to overstate what a dramatic,
positive impact this has had on public
safety. Before Fix NICS legislation
passed Congress, a Department of
Defense Inspector General report
detailed that “31 per cent of records
were not submitted (to NICS) as
required.” Between April 2018 and
August 2019, however, a DOJ report on
the effectiveness of the Fix NICS Act
showed “an increase of over 6 million
records in the three national databases
searched with every NICS check – a
6.2 per cent increase. In addition, there
was a 15 per cent increase in records
in one of those databases, the NICS
Indices.”
As gun control advocates push
for unrealistic and poorly conceived
legislation that targets law-abiding
Americans, the success of Fix NICS
shows the firearm and ammunition
industry is committed to finding Real
Solutions to prevent gun crime by
deranged individuals and criminals.
NSSF and its partners in the
firearm industry remain committed
to protecting the Second Amendment
rights of American citizens while
working to ensure that dangerous,
violent perpetrators can’t purchase
firearms – whether through firearm
retailers, straw purchases, or any
other black-market transaction –
thanks to the NICS platform and
its improvements via Fix NICS. We
encourage the Biden administration to
develop a more consistent, coherent,
and logical approach to gun crimes
that reflects the primary truth in the
Department of Justice’s arguments:
that a robust background check system
is operational and that criminals are
deemed responsible for their crimes.
Bryan James (le) and CEo
NIOA’S
GLOBAL VISION
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, you would have found
it difficult not to have heard the news regarding NIOA’s purchase of US-based rifle
manufacturer Barrett. Here, Gun Trade World sat down with NIOA’s Group CEO, Robert Nioa,
to find out his plans for Barrett and why the purchase makes perfect sense.
26 www.guntradeworld.com

For an Australian company to purchase an American
manufacturer with the gravitas and history of Barrett
you’re going to see a big reaction across the global
marketplace. However, the deal seems to be the perfect
fit – a global alliance with benefits across civilian and
military markets. Barrett will be strengthened, allowing the
company to serve its US and global partners even better.
“We have got a strategic plan for our business and there are
two ways you can grow if you are in the geographic market of
Australia,” says Robert Nioa, speaking to Gun Trade World at
the recent SHOT Show.
“You can grow by trying to expand into adjacent products
– we are the largest supplier of sporting firearms in Australia,
and we are now also the largest private supplier of weapons
and ammunition for defence. So, one way of growing the
business from that would be to go left or right - maybe
autonomous vehicles or electronics. However, our core
expertise is with guns and ammunition so, if we want to stay
with our core principles, geographic dispersion is the key for
growth.
“We then looked at where we would want to grow and
defence and sporting needed to feature as well as guns and
ammunition,” continues Robert.
“So, we looked at the Five Eyes nations – Australia, New
Zealand, US, UK and Canada. Of those markets, the biggest
market in the world is the USA. Having determined that the
US was where we wanted to get to. We then kept our eye out
for opportunities.”
The ideal fit
It wasn’t long before the perfect opportunity showed itself
and Robert puts his existing personal relationship with the
Barrett team down as a key reason behind the deal.
“In America we have had good relationships with many
companies, we’ve kept our ear to the ground, and we
came across the Barrett opportunity due to our personal
connections there and personal discussions.
“The reason that Barrett appealed as opposed to just some
other gun company is that it also fits consistently with the
work we are doing in Australia. It supports what we are doing
in our home market as well as what we can achieve in the
American market.”
NIOA runs the Australian Department of Defence
LAND 159 Lethality System Program, which will eventually
replace every weapon a soldier carries over the next decade.
The company is contracted to fulfil the requirements of this
programme, at the first stage of that contract.
“The next stage of that contract will require us to establish
a sustainable, small arms weapons manufacturing capability
for both ammunition and guns,” continues Robert.
“Now we can do that in a number of ways. We can support
other companies to do that or contribute directly to it but
one of our strategies was to ensure that we have global
distribution and a global brand giving access to the biggest
markets in the world.
“If you combine those objectives, bringing Barrett on
board who has existing US military contracts, giving credible
capability, unique IP, great manufacturing capability, global
distribution, a proven supply chain and so on – all of that
made a pretty compelling argument as to why we strategically
wanted to do that.
“There’s still some movement to come in the L159
Program and there is no guarantee that that will go our way.
However, regardless of that, the Barrett strategy is sound to
the overall business strategy, which is growth in weapons and
ammunition in the Five Eyes nations.”
Trust in Barrett
“Barrett is a long way from home for me personally to
manage,” says Robert.
“I needed to make sure that if we were going to invest
in a company we have full confidence in the management
team, the people and the products. I was not looking for a
turnaround. I did not want to buy a company for it to be a
problem and what we’ve managed to achieve in the purchase
of Barrett is a market leader that’s got a full order book with
a really professional management team.
“A company that is very well run that I have had a 15-
year association with. I have a high level of confidence in
all of the individuals, from Ronnie (Barrett) and Chris
(Barrett), at a personal leadership level and the senior
leadership team that is in place – I know them well.
I have experienced them as a customer so all of that is
really important in the decision. We would not have bought
a turnaround business, and we would not have entered into
something risky – it was too big an investment and too far
away from home to invest in something risky.”
Boost for the sporting market
“My view is we do not want to run a business that is
exclusively military. We must have a mix of sporting and
military, in fact this provides the best value to military
customers, because they’re not paying all the overheads for
the facility, but also gives the best continuity for business
because you have got sales going ahead on a daily basis,
allowing for steady cash flow.
“Our view is that, firstly the sporting market will be
pivotal to the future business plan. Secondly, we have
already given thought to what additional civilian market
products we should look at and the easiest place to start was
to look at what Barrett was previously doing, which was
stopped because of its capacity constraints.
“The first one is the Barrett Fieldcraft, ultra-lightweight,
hunting rifle,” says Robert.
“It is our intention to restart production of that rifle with
a view that we should have product availability by this time
next year. Now that is going to be conditional upon a bunch
of planning. This is not just a thought bubble. We have
already acquired additional equipment and we have a body
of work that has been going on for about four months now
in preparing to get that production line back up and going.
“The orders for the core line of products, so the M107
etc were just so immense that they (Barrett) just could not
have machines devoted to much lower value items. Barrett
has to fulfil government contracts, so it just simply wasn’t an
option. We have now invested in new machinery.
“From NIOA’s point of view, we actually operate on
behalf of the Australian government undertaking the testing
for small arms weapons in Australia. This means we bring a
robust very sophisticated engineering approach to weapons
design, so we are certainly going to make sure that between
the organisations across the different continents that we will
maintain the highest standards of manufacturing.”
It is Gun Trade World’s view that Barrett Firearms will
be an even stronger presence in the US market and the
reintroduction of the Fieldcraft rifle to the US sporting
market will certainly be seen as a huge plus to US retailers
and consumers alike.
KEY DECISIONS
PUSH
PRO-SHOT
FORWARD
US specialist in gun cleaning products, Pro-Shot
Products, has made a number of recent business
decisions that have enabled the company to grow
across the globe. Company President John Darmarin
spoke to Gun Trade World about his company’s vision.
28 WWW.GUNTRADEWORLD.COM

The Pro-Shot story began
back in 1982, when current
President John Darmarin was
just six years old. He joined
his dad on a shoot, where his
friend was taking part in a competition
shoot off. He was cleaning his gun and
he got a plastic patch loop melted into
his barrel due to his gun being hot from
shooting so much.
“So, he was out of the competition
and obviously really mad,” says John.
“My mum said, ‘give me the gun I’m
going to get that out of there’ and she
put it over the stove to heat it up the
gun!
“We all thought we needed to make
something that’s better than the current
cleaning kits available, so we started
work in a one-car garage with one
wooden bench and one lightbulb.
My dad was a factory-minded
person, very smart, but we essentially
started with nothing. We made plenty
of patches. I made them with a 5lb
hammer, so I was a really strong little
fella! We then made silicone cloths and
then bought a lathe and started making
our own cleaning rods and we just kind
of grew from there.”
Increased sales
“To begin with, we were just visible
mainly at shoots and gun shows, I
would travel with my dad to the shows
to sell our gear,” continues John.
“Then, once we got our sales
representation, that’s what really
changed our world. We had sales reps
across the country and our numbers
doubled or even tripled as there were
more people out there working for us.”
By the time John and his dad
had reached the year 2002 they had
packaged or manufactured over 40
million parts.
“The most popular products over
the years have been our gun cleaning
patches and rods - that we are best
known for,” says John. Gun cleaning
patches were the very first product we
made and no matter what comes after,
that’s what we will be known for.
The Purchase of KleenBore
“I found out that Safariland was selling
a few small companies and I reached
out to them and said ‘Hey, what are you
doing with KleenBore?,’ says John.
“To cut a long story short, a deal was
made and we were able to purchase
the brand – it all came down to great
timing.
“So, we ended up getting the
company as Safariland were putting
their focus on some of their other
lines and directing their business in
a different way. We just thought it
(KleenBore) to be a great extension of
our company as we see it as a quality
product at a different price point to
Pro-Shot products. Pro-Shot is a highend
brand and KleenBore would allow
us to attack a different market segment.
“We kind of started the whole
KleenBore company over from nothing,
at the point of buying the business,’ says
John.
“A lot of the existing products were
made overseas, so the first thing we
wanted to do was bring it back to
the United States. I think now more
than ever now people want ‘Madein-America’
products, especially after
Covid and the supply chain issues. It’s
a big statement to say that our products
are made in America!
“Now only around ten per cent of
KleenBore products are from overseas
– the brushes, jacks, the rods, the
patches and the classic kits are all made
in America, and they were all made
overseas before.
Global growth
“Outside of the US, the UK is a big
market for us,’ continues John. “We deal
with Viking Arms, and they are a great
distributor for both the commercial and
military markets.
“Our products are used by the NATO
nations. We started in the defence and
military markets around five years, it’s
the newest arm of our company. Right
now, we sell to 93 countries.
“We do what we say, we deliver orders
on time. We offer great customer service
and for that our customers love us.”
Despite this success, John and the
Pro-Shot team aren’t resting on their
laurels and new products are being
released.
“The Kleenbore line will have some
great new plastic kit, there’s going to
be some really innovative product, so
we are really excited about the growth
of that company. The other part is we’re
also going to produce some thermal
targets, we see this as a growth area that
we’re excited about.
“Our company is built on doing
what we say,” continues John. “From
day one my father was a Union man,
which is why it was so important for
him to produce Made-in-America
products. He loved our country more
than anything, he was a great shooter
and he instilled that into me. So even
though we have expanded into different
areas and categories, our message is still
simple – we deliver what we say we will,
and our customers love us for that.”
HEARING
PROTECTION
Don’t fall on deaf ears
Shooting without hearing
protection permanently
damages your hearing.
Even after just one
unprotected shot. It’s as
simple as that. There are a whole
host of hunters and sport shooters
– especially the older generation
– who suffer to varying degrees
from hearing loss, even deafness.
At one time, hearing protection
was seen as not necessary, not cool
even. Those times are thankfully
over. It is simply part and parcel of
responsible shooting and hunting
with firearms. Hence, in this
article, we take a closer look at
what hearing actually is, how you
can damage your hearing and ways
to best protect it.
UNPROTECTED EARS SUFFER
How do we actually hear? The
outer ear consists of the auricle
and the ear canal. This part, our ear,
serves to catch sound vibrations.
In addition, you have the middle
ear with three ossicles. This system
converts sound vibrations from
the air into mechanical vibrations
and transmits them to the inner
ear. The latter consists of the
cochlea with the auditory
and balance nerves attached
to it. The cochlea is the
organ responsible for sound
perception. This is where the
conversion of mechanical
vibrations into nerve impulses
takes place. Wave movements
occur in the cochlea, causing
the hair cells in the inner
ear to move. When the hair
cells are stimulated, they
transmit nerve impulses via
the auditory nerve to the
part of the brain responsible
for sound processing, also
known as the hearing centre.
When the ear is exposed to
excessively loud sounds – such
as a gunshot - the hair cells
in the inner ear are overstimulated,
causing them to
die at worst. Once the hair
cells are damaged, or dead, the
damage is irreversible. After
all, they are not replaced.
This is why it is so important
to protect those hair cells as
much as possible.
SOUND
A sound, perhaps even
better as sound pressure, is
measured in decibels (dB). The
sound pressure of a normal
conversation at a distance of
one metre is 40 to 60 dB. So
far, no problem. In addition,
the ear can be exposed to
brief moments of sound
pressure above 120 dB without
permanent damage. However,
this kind of sound level can
already feel uncomfortable and
even hurt. It is the long-term
exposure to sound pressure
above 80 dB that can cause
permanent hearing damage.
Regular shooting without
hearing protection can
gradually damage the hair cells
in our inner ear, shot after
shot, and cause hearing loss.
Specifically, let us consider
the sound pressure of a shot
from a firearm. A single
shot from a rifle in calibre
.30-06 Springfield creates
sound pressure peaking at
up to 170 dB at a distance of
one metre. Even a .22 Long
Rifle rimfire cartridge still
produces more than 130 dB
of sound pressure. A 12ga
buckshot cartridge produces
150 dB of sound pressure, as
do most handgun calibres.
A morning on the geese or a
round of clay pigeon shooting
without hearing protection is
therefore already pernicious
for your ears. Let alone doing
this every week, year in, year
out. Exactly, hearing damage
occurs. And there is no way to
reverse this. Only to prevent it.
TYPES OF HEARING
PROTECTION
By now, the reason for
hearing protection is clear.
It is a must when handling
firearms, in the field or on
the shooting range. However,
there are lots of options for
protecting your hearing,
from simple and efficient
to high-tech custom-made
ones. Hearing protection
can be roughly divided into
two groups, earplugs, and
earmuffs. Both types ensure
that harmful sound pressure
is kept out of your inner ear.
Earplugs
Foam earplugs are the most
common and cheapest way to
protect your hearing. You roll
these between your thumb
and forefinger until they form
a thin rod that you insert
into your ear canal. Once in
place, the foam expands back,
completely sealing off the ear
canal. Silicone earplugs offer
an equivalent alternative.
These earplugs made of both
foam and silicone have a
limited number of uses. Solid
earplugs are also available and
much more durable. These
block the ear canal rather by
their conical shape than by
expansion as with the flexible
plugs. The biggest advantage
of earplugs is their very
small size and the fact that
they therefore do not get in
the way when shooting. On
the other hand, the feeling
of constantly having two
plugs in your ear canal is
not the most comfortable
when wearing them for
hours. Besides, it is difficult
to communicate with your
colleagues when wearing such
plugs.
Earmuffs
Earmuffs consist of two
caps, usually made of plastic,
lined with sound-absorbing
material, and connected to
a headband. Because you
wear these muffs over your
ears – there is nothing in
your ear canal like with
earplugs – these muffs are
much more comfortable
to wear. However, they are
much bulkier than plugs and
can therefore interfere with
shooting.
Active hearing
protection
The types of hearing
protection we have discussed
so far are passive protectors.
They mainly serve to block
out noise. Any sound. This
means that soft, non-harmful
sounds, such as animal noises,
but also the words of your
hunting buddy, are blocked
off. Not really useful when
you are out hunting together
with friends or want to hear
game approaching through
the thicket on a driven hunt.
This is precisely why advanced,
active types of hearing
protection were developed
earlier. This type of active,
electronic hearing protection,
available in both earplugs and
muffs, lets ‘normal’ sounds
through but filters and blocks
out harmful sounds. The next
step is hearing protection
that will even amplify
certain sounds. Think of it as
binoculars for your ears. Also
Hearing protection is like a good
pocket knife. It is best to have it on hand
constantly and it always comes in handy.
possible is hearing protection
that connects via bluetooth to
your mobile phone or a walkie
talkie. Totally luxurious are
active, electronic earplugs that
are completely custom-made
for your ear canal.
DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT
The question is not ‘do you
want hearing protection?’,
but what type do you want?
The need to protect your
hearing as a hunter is obvious.
Everyone has an uncle,
grandfather or elderly hunting
friend who hears very badly, or
no longer. You don’t want this
for yourself, do you? Passive
hearing protection is the
bare minimum, while active
hearing protection offers so
many possibilities. Hearing
protection is like a good
pocket knife. It is best to have
it on hand constantly and it
always comes in handy. GTW
SPOTLIGHT
WHEN AMMO
RULES SUPREME
In the gun world, having a constant supply of quality ammunition is essential. Without it,
a gun is like a car without fuel or a bar that doesn’t serve alcohol – uerly useless. Imagine
a shooting competition or a weekend hunting without the right kind of ammo. Thanks to
proper ammunition, consumers can put their guns to best use. What’s more, for retailers,
ammo sales are simply one of the best ways to encourage repeat business.
TYPES OF AMMUNITION
In this feature we consider
metallic rifle and handgun
ammunition next to shotgun
cartridges. As we all know
ammo is a type of preassembled
packaging featuring
a projectile (a bullet) or
multiple projectiles (shot), a
propellant (gun powder) with
a case (metallic, plastic or
paper) that is precisely made
to fit within a gun’s chamber.
When considering metallic
handgun and rifle ammunition,
two essential types spring to
mind: rimfire and centerfire,
categorizing them by the type
of their primers. Shotgun
shells meanwhile all share the
same typical construction,
regardless of their gauge.
CENTERFIRE CARTRIDGES
With centrefire ammunition
the gun’s firing pin strikes the
primer cap in the middle of
the cartridge base to ignite
the powder and propel the
bullet forward. Compared to a
rimfire cartridge, the centrefire
cartridge has numerous
advantages. Not only can you
produce much bigger rounds
because the casing is far more
robust; centrefire also implies
it is only the primer in the
middle that gets damaged
when firing. Consequently, the
empty metallic cartridge casing
can be used over and over
again after firing. centrefire
ammunition is also felt to be
more reliable and offers a much
bigger variety in calibres, loads
and available bullet types.
Contrary to rimfire
ammunition, hunting accounts
for the majority of sales in
the centrefire ammunition
category. Just a limited part
of sales goes to plinking
and recreational shooting
while competition and target
shooting accounts for only a
small part of sales as well. This
divide remains largely stable
throughout the years. It goes
without saying that centrefire
rifle ammunition has a big
spotlight
In rimfire the firing pin
strikes and crushes the rim
of the round to ignite the
primer inside. The rim will
display a tell-tale mark where
it has been struck. Essentially
the whole inside edge of the
cartridge is one big, flattened
primer. The advantage to this
design is that it is relatively
cheap to manufacture.
However, the nature of the
casing means the design is
generally limited to smaller
calibres, since the brass casing
has to be less robust and it
would be destroyed by an
explosion of a large amount
of propellant needed for a
bigger projectile. This is why
you will typically only see
rimfire ammunition in .17
and .22 calibres. Compared to
centrefire ammunition, another
disadvantage is that the nature
of the rimfire cartridge design
means the case is permanently
deformed and, therefore,
is unsuitable for reloading.
Despite its construction
limitations, rimfire
ammunition does remain the
most used ammo type across
the globe. In the last twelve
months, sales of rimfire ammo
appeared to remain stable.
SHOTGUN SHELLS
Modern shotgun shells
typically consist of a plastic
case, with the base covered in
a thin metal covering. In the
past shells with a paper case
used to be common. While
these are still made today,
shooters tend to prefer plastic
cases as these are far more
resistant to the elements. The
base of the shell is fairly thick
to hold the large shotgun
primer. The powder itself takes
relatively little space in the
shell. After the powder comes
the wad. The primary role of
a shotgun wad is to prevent
the mixing of propellants
and pellets in a shotshell.
The wad forms a critical gas
seal at firing to keep the
expanding gasses behind the
shot charge. Wads also act as
spacers, setting the correct
volume for the propellant and
shot charges and cushioning
the pellets to reduce
deformation. Conventional
fibre wads continued to
be used after plastic shot
wrappers appeared. Eventually
hard-to-load plastic sheet
material was replaced with
an easily installed shot cup
that was closed at the bottom.
Moulded wads soon became
commonplace. The evolution
of wad design integrated
the skirted base, pellet
cushioning, and the pellet
wrapper into one moulded
unit. Throughout the years,
as society is rethinking ways
to decrease plastic pollution,
many companies have come
up with viable alternatives for
non-degradable plastic wads.
These biodegradable wads tend
to be either water soluble or
photodegradable. The shot cup
is the last part of the shell,
and it serves to hold the shot
together as it moves down the
barrel. Shot cups have slits
on the sides so that they peel
open after leaving the barrel,
allowing the shot to continue
in flight undisturbed. The shot
fills the shot cup (which must
be of the correct length to
hold the desired quantity of
shot), and the shotgun shell is
then crimped, or rolled closed.
The shot in a shotgun shell
is traditionally made of lead,
but other metals such as steel,
copper, tungsten, and bismuth
are also used due to restrictions
on the use of lead in some
areas. Next to shot, a shotshell
can also contain a single,
large solid projectile, known
as a slug. Shotgun ammo is
the only category where sales
slowed down in the last twelve
months, at least according to
the respondents participating
in our survey.
PERFORMANCE
When asked about the main
factors in a buyer’s choice of
ammunition, performance
rules supreme. No less than 56
percent of the retailers in our
survey state performance as
being a decisive factor. Price
comes in second, followed by
availability and brand/make.
This result clearly has a lot to
do with the question being
posed about the ammunition
market in general. In recent
years our surveys showed
performance is the prime
reason to buy in the centrefire
ammunition market as opposed
to price, definitely price, in the
rimfire ammunition market.
Another category on the rise
appears to be eco-friendly
ammunition which can be
lead-free and/or biodegradable.
VITAL
Looking back to the last
twelve months, nearly 60
percent of the retailers in our
survey claim ammunition sales
to have risen. A third mentions
sales are stable. When asked
about the importance of
ammunition sales for the
overall business of the retailers
in our survey, every single
one claims ammunition sales
to be ‘very important’. For
33 percent of retailers, up to
60 percent of their business
consists of ammunition sales.
A further 12 percent quote
an even higher percentage
of their overall sales come
from ammunition. All this
to underline the overall
importance of the ammunition
market for the gun trade. The
need for ongoing supplies
of ammunition provides
an important link between
retailers and consumers by
ensuring regular contact and,
in the end, creating a real bond
with customers. GTW
ALAsKA
D O I N G B U S I N E S S W I T H . . .
The largest US State with the 49th highest population – Alaska is
a true wilderness and a hunter’s paradise. Hunting plays a major
role in sustaining the Alaskan economy and, with relaxed gun
rules, could be a profitable market for your company.
T
he word Alaska means
“The Great Land,” and the
state’s nickname is “The
Last Frontier.” Both are
suitable nicknames for a
State containing enormous
expanses of wild country and
unpopulated areas – a true
hunter’s nirvana, home to
North America’s largest and
most sought-after game.
Covering 365,000,000
acres, an area one-fifth the
size of the entire United
States, Alaska has plenty of
room for the bold hunter to
travel. Alaska has more than
a dozen species of big-game
animals as well as first-rate
small game and waterfowl
hunting prospects. Biggame
species include bison,
caribou, elk, muskox, wolves,
black bears, Dall sheep,
moose, brown and grizzly
bears, Sitka black-tailed deer,
and mountain goats. Most
hunting in Alaska occurs
between August and October,
but bears may be taken in
either fall or spring in some
locations. Alaska requires
non-residents hunting
brown/grizzly bears, Dall
sheep, or mountain goats
to be accompanied by an
Alaska-licensed guide or by
an Alaska resident at least
19 years of age who is a close
relative, defined as within the
“second degree of kindred.”
Non-residents are required
to have a guide to hunt any
big-game animal in Alaska.
Alaska must be licensed by
the state. For some hunts in
Alaska, it is possible to hire a
transporter instead of a guide.
These are licensed individuals
and companies who help
hunters get to remote areas by
bush plane, boat, horse, ATV,
snow machine, etc.
Hunting and guided
hunting, in particular, has
a huge economic impact on
Alaska. A large study by The
Alaska Professional Hunters
Association in 2019 found
that the total amount that
the guided hunting industry
brought into the Alaskan
economy was $91.8 million.
The guided hunting
industry circulated $57.4
million in the Alaska
economy as labour income
and spending for goods
and services. Whilst $31.9
million was spent directly
with businesses in Alaska by
guides and visiting hunters.
Multiplier effects generated
an additional $19.1 million
In 2022, the state of Alaska had a population of
731,869, having declined an annualised -0.2 per cent
over the five years to 2022, which ranks it 47th out
of all 50 US states by growth rate. Alaska’s gross
state product (GSP) in 2022 reached $49.6b, with
growth of -1.7 per cent over the five years to 2022.
Businesses in Alaska employed a total of 472,561
people in 2022, with average annual employment
growth over the past five years of -0.9 per cent. The
top three sectors by total employment are Mining,
Transportation and Warehousing, Real Estate and
Rental and Leasing, while the unemployment rate
across the state in 2022 was 5.1 per cent.
In 2022, Alaska’s GDP reached $49.6b,
representing a decrease of -1.7 per cent from 2021.
Alaska’s GDP has declined at an annualized rate of
-1.3 per cent over the five years to 2022.
The largest industries by revenue in Alaska are
Tourism, Oil Drilling & Gas Extraction and Gasoline
& Petroleum Bulk Stations, which generated $70.1b,
$34.5b and $10.7b in 2022.
DOING BUSINESS WITH... alaska
MOOSE
Heavy bodied and long-legged, with a
drooping nose, moose (Alces alces) are
the largest members of the deer family.
They range in colour from golden
brown to almost black, depending upon
the season and the age of the animal.
Full-grown males (bulls) stand
almost 6 ft (1.8 m) tall at the shoulder,
and males in prime condition weigh
from 1,200 to 1,600 lbs (542 –725kg).
Adult females are somewhat smaller
and weigh 800 to 1,300 lbs (364 –
591kg). A 1,600-lb (726kg) moose will
dress out at about 950 lbs (431kg),
yielding approximately 500 lbs (227kg)
of meat. Alaskans and non-residents
annually harvest 6-8,000 moose, which
translates into about 3.5 million lbs of
usable meat.
Only bull moose have antlers. The
largest moose antlers in North America
come from Alaska, the Yukon Territory,
and the Northwest Territories of
Canada. Trophy class bulls are found
throughout Alaska, but the largest
come from the western portion of the
state. Moose occasionally produce
trophy-size antlers when they are six or
seven years old, with the largest antlers
grown at approximately 10 to 12 years
of age. In the wild, moose rarely live
more than 16 years.
During fall and winter, moose
consume large quantities of willow,
birch, and aspen twigs. In some areas,
moose actually establish a “hedge” or
browse line six to eight feet (1.8 – 2.4m)
above the ground by clipping most of
the terminal shoots of favoured food
species. Spring is the time of grazing
as well as browsing. Moose eat a
variety of foods, particularly sedges,
equisetum (horsetail), pond weeds, and
grasses. During summer, moose feed on
vegetation in shallow ponds, forbs, and
the leaves of birch, willow, and aspen.
in economic activity for
Alaska’s support sector.
1,380 people were
directly employed in the
guided hunting industry,
resulting in $25.5 million
in direct wages and guide
income.
Multiplier effects
generated another 510
jobs and $15.3 million in
wages for Alaska’s support
sector.
A majority (59 per
cent) of guide spending
occurs in rural areas of
Alaska in the form of
wages, air transportation,
fuel, food, and supplies.
Meat Sharing is a
long-standing tradition in
Alaska.
In addition to the
impacts of jobs, wages,
and goods and services
spending, hunting guides
and their clients share
a significant volume
of high-quality game
meat with Alaska
residents every year.
Recipients include Native
communities, elders,
needy families with
children, traditional food
programs, and those who
enjoy game meat but can
no longer hunt. Game
meat is nutritionally and
culturally rich and is an
important part of many
Alaskans’ diets.
An estimated 223,500
pounds of game meat was
shared with Alaskans by
guides and guided hunters
in 2019. 167,600 pounds
55,900 with urban
residents.
CARIBOU
Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are large, stout members of the deer
family, with concave hooves that splay to support the animal
in snow or soft tundra and which function as paddles in water.
Caribou live in the arctic tundra, mountain tundra, and northern
forests of North America, Russia, and Scandinavia. Although they
are called reindeer in Europe, only domesticated caribou are
called reindeer in Alaska and Canada.
Caribou in Alaska are distributed in 32 herds (or populations)
totalling approximately 950,000 animals. This includes in herds
shared with Canada’s Yukon Territory. Although each herd uses its
own unique calving area, different herds may mix together while
on their winter ranges. Many herds winter in the boreal forest, but
during the remainder of the year caribou prefer treeless tundra
and mountains where they can get relief from biting insects.
Population numbers of caribou are somewhat cyclical, but
the timing of declines and increases, and the size to which herds
grow, is not very predictable. On average, people harvest about
22,000 caribou in Alaska each year.
Alone among the deer family, caribou of both sexes grow
antlers. Antlers of adult bulls are large and massive; those of
adult cows are much smaller and spindlier. In late fall, caribou
are clove brown-coloured with a white neck, rump, and feet, and
they often have a whitish flank stripe. Weights of adult bull’s
average 350 – 400lbs (159 – 182kg). Mature females average
175 – 225 lbs (80 – 120kg). The dressed weight of a 400lb (181-kg)
caribou is about 240lbs (109kg). This equates to about 100lbs
(45kg) of meat.
BLACK BEAR
An estimated 100,000 black bears (Ursus americanus)
inhabit Alaska. State-wide, the annual harvest
increased steadily between 2003 and 2007, from
about 2,500 to 3,250 bears.
Adult black bears stand about 29in (0.73m) at the
shoulders and measure about 60in (1.5m) from nose
to tail. Males are larger than females. An average
adult male in spring weighs about 180 – 200lbs (81.8
– 90.9kg). Bears weigh considerably less when they
emerge from winter dormancy; they may weigh 20
per cent more in the fall after putting on layers of
fat prior to hibernation. A 350lb (159kg) black bear
will dress out at about 210lbs (95kg), yielding about
120lbs (54kg) of meat.
Black bears can vary in colour from jet black
to white. Black is the colour encountered most
frequently across the state, but brown or cinnamoncoloured
black bears are sometimes seen in
Southcentral Alaska and on the south-eastern
mainland.
In Alaska, black bears occur over most of the
forested areas of the state; depending on the season
of the year, they may be found from sea level to
alpine areas. They are not found on the Seward
Peninsula, on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, or north of
the Brooks Range. They are also absent from some of
the large islands of the Gulf of Alaska, notably Kodiak,
Montague, Hinchinbrook and others, and from the
Alaska Peninsula south of the Lake Iliamna area. In
Southeast Alaska, black bears occupy most islands
with the exceptions of Admiralty, Baranof, Chichagof,
and Kruzof; these are inhabited by brown bears. Both
bear species occur on the southeastern mainland.
Gun law
Alaska has very relaxed
gun laws, and very few
regulations regarding the
sale, possession, and use of
firearms and ammunition
compared to those in most
of the United States. Alaska
was the first state to adopt
carry laws modelled after
those of Vermont, where no
license is required to carry
a handgun either openly or
concealed. However, permits
are still issued to residents,
allowing reciprocity with
other states and exemption
from the Federal Gun Free
School Zone Act. The
legal stipulation that gun
permits are issued but not
required is referred to by
gun rights advocates as an
“Alaska carry,” as opposed
to a “Vermont carry” (or
“Constitutional carry”),
where gun licenses are
neither issued nor required.
Alaska prohibits any
type of carry in schools,
domestic violence shelters,
courts, and correctional
institutions. Carrying is
also prohibited in any place
where alcohol is served for
on-site consumption, with
an exception for restaurants
that serve alcohol, if one is
not consuming alcohol while
carrying. When encountering
a police officer, a person
carrying a concealed weapon
is required by law to inform
the officer they are carrying,
and to cooperate if the officer
chooses to temporarily seize
the gun for the length of the
encounter. The possession of
any firearm while intoxicated
is illegal.
There are no laws in
Alaska restricting assault
weapons, as well as no law
restricting high-capacity
magazines.
alaska concealed
Handguns
Several states have provisions
that allow 18–21-year-olds
to have concealed carry
permits. Those permits do
not override Alaska laws, and
a person under 21 is NOT
allowed to carry a concealed
handgun in Alaska.
The Alaska Concealed
Handgun Permit (ACHP)
is only available to Alaska
residents who choose to
obtain a concealed carry
permit.
The Department of Public
Safety works with other
states to establish reciprocal
agreements to recognise and
honour the ACHP in those
other states. When in another
state, the laws of that state
must be respected.
The ACHP is approved
by the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives as an alternative
to the point-of-sale NICS
background check. Applicants
and ACHP holders may
request their permit be
labelled “NICS Exempt”
by completing the NICS
supplement. GTW
just as pleasing to the eye in
rosé as its counterpart on the
receiver, where the Argali
presents himself instead of the
usual R8 logo. On the black
pistol grip cap, the Ladies
Edition lettering in rosé is
complemented with arabesques.
It was important to the
huntresses involved in the
development of the Ladies
Edition to offer a harmonious
and complete composition.
That is why the Ladies Edition
also includes a rifle sling
made of anthracite-coloured
suede with the lettering
“Ladies Edition “, which,
like the contrast stitching, is
in a delicate rosé. The bolt
handle ball is made of steel
and decorated with a flower. A
knurled profile makes the bolt
handle ball particularly easy to
handle and thus facilitates fast
repeating.
The Ladies Edition has the
recoil pad Compact. It takes
the female silhouette into
account and enables more
huntresses to achieve a perfect
shooting position right away.
The complete rifle is also
available in the Silence
version. The model comes
with an adjustable comb and a
Compact recoil pad. Available
from May 2023.
STREAMLIGHT
Streamlight launches
Stinger Color-Rite Light
Gun Trade World was shown the new Stinger Color-Rite rechargeable
flashlight at this year’s SHOT Show; the flashlight allows users to better
see the colour spectrum under low light conditions.
The Stinger Color-
Rite is a rechargeable
LED flashlight that
features high CRI light with
Streamlight’s Color-Rite
Technology for true colour
recognition in a variety of first
responder, outdoor, automotive,
and other applications. The
compact, powerful new light
delivers up to 500 lumens.
The Stinger Color-Rite uses a
High Colour Rendering Index
(90 CRI) LED for enhanced
visualisation under low light
conditions, allowing users to
see the colour spectrum as
they would in natural light. Its
softer, warmer beam can help
spot subtle details at fire and
accident scenes, amplify tracks
and blood trails, and match and
identify colours in auto and
industrial applications, among
many other uses.
The new light joins the
growing family of Streamlight
products with Color-Rite
capability, including the Dualie
3AA Color-Rite, the Syclone,
the FlipMate, the Strion
Switchblade, and the Stinger
Switchblade.
“The new Stinger Color-Rite
is an excellent lighting choice
for military and first responders,
technicians, outdoor enthusiasts,
and others when performing
tasks under darkened conditions
that require exacting attention
to detail,” said Streamlight
Chief Revenue Officer Michael
F. Dineen. “Whether searching
for trace evidence, examining
fire or accident scenes, or
working in tight, dark spaces, it
prevents colour ‘washout’ while
also providing ultra-bright
light.”
The new rechargeable light
uses a high-power, warm
white, 3,000K, 90 CRI LED
and features a deep-dish
parabolic reflector that produces
a concentrated beam with
optimum peripheral lighting.
It offers three variable lighting
modes plus a strobe: High
(500 lumens, 17,500 candela,
265-metre beam distance);
Medium (275 lumens, 9,000
candela, 190-metre beam
distance), and Low (140 lumens,
4,500 candela, 134-metre beam
distance). Run times range from
five hours on the Low setting
to 1.5 hours on High, with the
strobe mode providing three
continuous hours.
Powered by a three-cell,
3.6-volt, 2.6Ahr Ni-MH sub-C
battery, the Stinger Color-Rite
is rechargeable up to 1,000
times and fits all existing
Stinger chargers. With a smart
charger, it fully recharges in 4
hours using 5V/1A USB input,
or three hours using 12V DC
input. With a smart PiggyBack
charger, the light fully recharges
in 7.5 hours using 5V/1A USB
input or four hours using 12V
DC input.
The Stinger Color-Rite is
constructed from 6000 series
machined aluminium that is
anodised against corrosion
and features an unbreakable
polycarbonate lens with a
scratch-resistant coating.
Its multi-function, easy
access, head-mounted pushbutton
switch is designed for
extremely long life. It also
features a non-slip, rubberised
comfort grip and an anti-roll
rubber ring.
The Stinger Color-Rite
weighs 351g and measures
21cm in length. IPX4-rated for
water-resistant operation, it also
is impact resistance-tested to
one metre.
Patriot LR Tactical joins
Mossberg bolt-action line
Known for its performance on game and down range, Mossberg introduces the newest
member of the family: the Patriot LR (Long Range) Tactical bolt-action rifle.
Housed in an adjustable, customisable
chassis system and fed from AICSstyle
magazine, this Patriot rifle
is designed to enhance your long-range
performance and accuracy. Available now
in three of the most popular, flat-shooting
chamberings: 6.5mm Creedmoor and 308
Win with 22-inch barrel length and 6.5
PRC with 24-inch barrel.
Based on the proven Patriot bolt-action
platform, the Patriot LR Tactical has a
twin-lug push-feed machined-steel action
with medium bull, carbon steel barrel
featuring an 11-degree match crown and
matte blue finish. For ease of adding a
suppressor, the barrel is threaded (5/8”-24
threads per inch) and includes a protective
thread cap. The factory-installed 20 MOA
Picatinny rail provides for added elevation
adjustment with most optics. And like all
Patriot rifles, this tack driver has Mossberg’s
patented LBA (Lightning Bolt Action)
user-adjustable trigger with a two to sevenpound
range of adjustment. Rounding
out the standard features are an oversized,
easy-grip bolt handle and smooth-cycling
fluted bolt.
Setting this Patriot apart is the MDT
Field Stock chassis system that features
V-Block aluminium bedding for stability
on long-range shots; Magpul M-LOKcompatible
forend with slots at the three,
six and nine o’clock positions for accessory
customisation; and buttstock that is
adjustable for length-of-pull (LOP) from
13.5 – 14.25 inches with the use of spacers
(three .75-inch spacers included). The comb
height is also adjustable, up to two inches,
with the tension knob. Simply loosen the
knob, adjust the cheekrest to the desired
height and re-tighten the knob. The trigger
guard is oversized and is equipped with an
integrated magazine release lever located
forward of the trigger guard. Completing
the design of this functional stock is
an ergonomic, straight-wrist grip with
texturing; front and rear sling swivel studs;
and flat dark earth finish. The Patriot LR
Tactical is fed from a metal AICS-style
detachable magazine with seven-round
or 10-round capacity and will accept
aftermarket AICS-style mags (calibrespecific).
When extending your down-range
performance and accuracy is your goal, the
newly-designed Patriot LR Tactical rifle
delivers with functionality, precision, and
consistency – shot-after-shot.
DAVIDE PEDERSOLI
Pedersoli introduces
shrewd new release
Italian gunmaker David Pedersoli prides itself on producing historically accurate and
technically high-performing guns. Here, the company introduces the 86/71 Drop Tine lever
Action Rifle.
The new 86/71 Drop Tine Lever
Action Rifle with tubular magazine
is smooth and fast, thanks to the
solid steel CNC machined lever and
receiver. Available in the long-lived 30-30
Winchester calibre, coming down to us
from a glorious past, it continues to be
relevant today. It has been revised in this
modern version, thanks to the excellent
restyling by the main commercial
ammunition manufacturers and consumer
demand. This model is characterized
using innovative components and
materials, as well as an affordable price.
The name of the rifle comes from
the elusive and rare drop tine deer,
which exhibits abnormal antler
growth, characterised by the downward
development of one or more tines on
either or both left and right racks of
antlers. Typical of extremely long-lived
animals, drop tines are attributed with
shrewdness and cunning and the ability to
escape the aim of predators and hunters
alike.
Davide Pedersoli is proud to include
this famous calibre in the Boarbuster
line, having developed a specific version
featuring the elegant stock/forend tobacco
colour and matte black metal parts.
The PMG barrel, threaded
5/8”x24UNF at the muzzle is equipped
with fibre optic front sight and the
Picatinny base with integrated rear sight.
“After much research and development,
we have engineered a special loading lever
that is both ergonomic and large enough,
to enables ease of loading while wearing
protective gloves or comfortable enough
with bare hands,” says Stefano Pedersoli
Equipped with a Microcell butt pad
for higher absorption recoil than typical
rubber pad, the innovative technopolymer
stock has both vertical and
horizontal adjustments.
About
Since Davide Pedersoli celebrated its
first birthday in the spring of 1958, more
than sixty years have passed and the
recurring records and the large number of
medals won in various international sport
competitions, testify to the perfection
and ballistic precision of Pedersoli guns,
features that make them popular among
target shooters and hunters worldwide.
Davide Pedersoli has always distinguished
itself by its historical research of the
guns to reproduce, to identify some of
the most important steps in the gun
manufacturing tradition of eighteenth
and nineteenth centuries European and
American firearms. A rewarding choice
that has allowed the company to relive
epic creations and, with the passage
of time, believe in a real lifestyle and
promote every aspect of it. The company
has also developed a strong bond with
“re-enactment” groups, an area in which
scholars and collectors always show the
utmost attention to detail and to the
faithful historical reproduction of various
models.
