Thursday March 30 2023 3 Professor gives back to old school • By Darryl Baser A FORMER Linwood High School head boy has donated a collection of history books he has worked on and two artworks to Te Aratai College. Professor Geoff Rice was at Linwood High in 1964 before the school was renamed Linwood College then Te Aratai College last year. Rice received a New Zealand Order of Merit in 2021 for services to historical research and education. His first book, Black November, on the 1918 influenza pandemic in New Zealand was used by the Ministry of Health in its pandemic action plan released in response to the 2006 bird flu pandemic. Rice said it felt like the right time to give something back to his old school. “My grandson started there this year, it made me think: ‘Perhaps it is time I did something for the school’.” Sixteen of the books donated were written by Rice, including Black November. In his last year of high school, Rice said he was “dead keen on becoming an artist and teaching art.” “I actually sat the fine arts prelim in my last year at school and passed it, but my headmaster and Jim Ormond, the deputy principal, took me aside one day. “Jim said to me: ‘Your artistic talent will be with you the rest of your life but [history] is the best way to get a degree’,” he said. Rice also gifted a painting which references a mural he created as a student in 1963 in the library. The painting was destroyed along with the library and staff room in a fire at the school 1975. He said he was also motivated to give back to the school which set him up for life. “I had a very good grounding at Linwood High School as it was then. We had really keen young staff fresh out of teachers’ college and I got a very good education at Linwood.” Te Aratai College principal Richard Edmundson said the gifts will remind the students of the school’s rich past. PHOTO: WARWICK BURKE “It’s a wonderful example of community, of people valuing their own schooling, and wanting to pass on the good things that have happened in their lives to the next generation,” Edmundson said. “Our school, the rebuild, is a post-earthquake success story of Christchurch east. When the east side of the city is strong it helps the whole of the city to be strong and I’d argue more prosperous.” The new campus is set grow to facilitate 1800 students “in a number of years.” Linwood centre gets post shop THE LINWOOD Service Centre is now a one-stop shop for people wanting to post letters and pay bills. The city council has been working with NZ Post to ensure residents in the Linwood area continue to have easy access to postal and bill paying services. An agreement has been reached, and the Linwood Service Centre is now a full agent for NZ Post. “We hear and understand that the Linwood community value convenient access to PostPlus services. We’re pleased to have a plan in place that will continue to see these services offered locally,” said city council head of citizen and customer services Sarah Numan. “We will have a convenient one-stop shop where people can access council customer services, send letters and parcels and pay bills. It’s a great outcome for our community.” The city council started providing postal services at the Fendalton Service Centre in 2016. Since then it has expanded to include Papanui, Riccarton and Shirley service centres. The Linwood Service Centre is located in the Linwood Library in Eastgate Mall. Smartly turned out in their crisp white jackets and blue and white tartan skirts, the 21-member team took first place in the display phase and were third champion team overall. Sirita Prior, who co-coaches the team with Noeline Kitto, says it was the closest result for champion team in five years, and “a very interesting competition with just 30 points between the first and third placegetters”. They were also the third-placed technical drill team. For their winning display march, the team received a trophy, with members also awarded badges and bars to place on their jackets. Eight teams from around New Zealand competed in the Masters division, four of them from Canterbury. The Pioneers of Canterbury Masters have enough members for two technical drill teams, and the second team, Pioneers of Canterbury Force, placed fifth in the technical drill phase. “It’s been said by some that you can’t coach two teams successfully, but we’ve proved them wrong. The 2024 NZ Marching Championships will be held in Hamilton next March, hosted by Marching Waikato.
