YOUNG CRIMINALS
PLAGUE CITY
9-year-old
believed
to be
involved
• By Sam Sherwood
A 9-YEAR-OLD is believed to be
involved with one of many groups
of youth offenders behind a series
of car thefts and burglaries in
Christchurch.
Last week a group of youths
allegedly stole about $3000 worth
of alcohol from a store in the city
before fleeing in a stolen car.
Police were called and observed
the car before deploying road
spikes, which brought it, and the
six youths inside, to a stop.
A police spokesperson said
six youths were taken into
custody. It is understood one of
the youths allegedly cut off their
electronically-monitored bail
bracelet. It is also understood the
youths ages ranged from 13-16.
The incident comes amid a spree
of youth offending in Christchurch
by youth offenders.
MEET EGG, Bounce, Bunny,
Spring, Baskett and siblings,
saved from Bottle Lake Forest.
The 12 lucky kittens were
rescued from a blackberry bush
where they had spent the night.
Found by a member of the
public last week, the kittens were
delivered to the After Hours
Veterinary Clinic. They were
picked up by the SPCA the next
morning.
SPCA feline attendant Robyn
Alberts said the kittens were
friendly, but very hungry when
they arrived.
“They were .
. . very keen for
attention. They
loved to be held
and picked up.
“They were
pretty relaxed
kittens, but very
hungry.”
Alberts thinks
they were out in
the forest for about a day.
“They were in pretty good condition.
Kittens that size and age
can’t fend for themselves.”
She said it was lucky the kittens
were picked up.
“They might not have survived
the rain on Tuesday.”
The SPCA thinks there are
three different age groups among
the kittens.
“Some of them required the
bottle, some were at the point
where they’re starting to eat
some food, and some
are eating solid food
really well,” Alberts
said.
The youngest of the group are
estimated to be three weeks old,
while the oldest are around five
weeks old.
Albert is confident the kittens
will grow up to be healthy.
“At the moment there isn’t
likely to be any reason why they
can’t all thrive.
RESCUED: These Easter kittens will soon be ready for their new homes.
Before they can be put up for
adoption, the kittens must reach
eight weeks old, so they can be
desexed and vaccinated.
However, there might be a
backlog in getting them to their
forever homes.
“We have heaps of kittens
available for adoption at the
moment.
“Once they are cleared we can
get these ones up for adoption,”
Albert said.
The SPCA in Christchurch has
70 cats available, including kittens.
“We’ve definitely had an increase
this year,” Alberts said.
“(The rise in kittens) comes
down to people not desexing
their animals.”
Kids behind car thefts, burglaries
Onlookers assaulted
• By Nathan Morton
A POLICE officer and two
people were assaulted on
Monday night and a 13-year-old
was road-spiked in a vehicle
incident.
A teenager has been taken
into custody and referred to
youth aid and a 14-year-old
is appearing before the Youth
Court.
On Tuesday a store on
Langdons Rd in Northcote was
robbed shortly after 3pm.
Three youths entered the store
and stole items before making
an attempted escape. Outside
the building, two members of
the public found themselves
involved in the situation and
were assaulted. Police arrived
at the scene and shortly
afterwards, located the suspects.
One of the youths assaulted
a police officer who received
minor injuries as a result.
A 14-year-old was arrested
at the scene and taken into
custody. They were due to
appear before the Youth Court
today in relation to the incident.
Meanwhile, a young teenager
in New Brighton attempted a
joyride on Tuesday night. Police
spotted a vehicle of interest on
Cottonwood St about 2am.
The vehicle did not stop for
police. A spokesperson said
they did not initiate a pursuit.
Instead, road spikes were
deployed and brought the
vehicle to a stop on Castledown
St, only 2km from where the car
was spotted. A 13-year-old was
taken into custody and will be
referred to youth services, police
confirmed.
Petrol station ram-raid
EARLY yesterday morning,
four people were arrested
following a ram-raid at a
NPD petrol station in
Yaldhurst.
The stolen vehicle and suspects
were later found by police in
Ferry Rd, Woolston.
They will be referred to Youth
services.
•From page 1
The 9-year-old understood to
be among the groups is suspected
of being involved in at least two
incidents over the last week
involving stolen cars. In one
of the incidents, a BB-gun was
fired from a vehicle, injuring
someone’s eye.
Canterbury police metro area
commander Superintendent
Lane Todd said police attended
a number of incidents allegedly
involving the same group of
young people last Monday and
Tuesday, including a fleeing
driver incident on Tuesday where
a vehicle they were in failed to
stop when signalled.
“The vehicle fled and a pursuit
was not initiated, and the vehicle
was located crashed a short time
later. There were no injuries and
four young people were taken
into custody. They have been
referred to Youth Services,” Todd
said.
There have been several
incidents involving the groups in
recent weeks, including youths
driving in a convoy of stolen cars
before one crashed into a lamp
post and others using crowbars to
try and break into a dairy before
ramming the doors with a stolen
car.
Police also found two youths
suspected of stealing a car with
fishing knives, a tyre iron and
vise grips. The youths were taken
home, but several hours later they
were found after allegedly trying
to break into a car. Some police
cars have also been rammed by
youths.
A police source said staff were
seeing a “continual drop in age”
in youth offenders.
“I think that’s a very
concerning aspect because for us
it’s now dropping very strongly
into that non-prosecutable group
and that’s causing us headaches
because we can’t bring any
control to that, we can’t bring any
meaningful accountability.
“There is still the activeness of
the higher age level which just
continues on as it always has,
but this younger group what we
are seeing is just that repetitive
nature of their offending
because they’re getting caught,
they’re getting returned home
and they’re out and gone
within hours and back into the
offending.”
Todd said youth offending is
an issue that is being experienced
right across the country at
present, with
Canterbury “no
exception”.
“Police is
committed to
working with
our partners and
communities to
prevent youth
offending, Lane Todd
support victims
of crime, and hold young
offenders to account in a
meaningful and effective way.
“Effectively dealing with youth
offenders provides a unique
opportunity to prevent future
harm in our communities.”
Police were involved in a
number of initiatives aimed at
preventing youth offending and
reoffending.
“We recognise that in order
to prevent future generations
of young people from serious
harm, we need to work in a
collaborative way to address
the underlying causes of youth
offending.”
Violent rampage leads to jail
• By Emily Moorhouse
A TEENAGER who went on a
violent rampage stealing young
victims’ bikes by threatening and
assaulting them has been told he
can’t play the “youth card” much
longer.
Kaikohe Harris-Paul’s modus
operandi was to approach his
young victims as they biked in
public, outnumbering them with
his associates, and ask for a turn
on their bike in a threatening
manner.
At his sentencing in the district
court, the 18-year-old was
told by the judge his youth was
running out but he had time to
turn his life around.
The lengthy list of theft and
robbery charges, including stealing
a young girl’s bike while she
was at school, were outlined in
a summary of facts presented to
the court.
On February 22, one of Harris-
Paul’s victims was biking along a
cycleway in Papanui. One of his
associates knocked the victim off
his bike, valued at $2800.
As the victim tried to get up he
was grabbed by another associate
by his backpack and thrown to
the ground.
The group stood over the
victim and demanded he hand
over his phone and AirPods before
punching and kicking him
over the body and head multiple
times and stealing his bike.
Harris-Paul and his associates
stole two more bikes from
people at Jellie Park, threatening
one victim who tried to hold on
to his bike that he would get a
“bash” if he didn’t let go.
On March 1 last year, Harris-
Paul went to an intermediate
school carrying the front wheel
of a bike.
He went to the school’s bike
stand and removed the front
wheel of a bike, which was
locked to the stand, and replaced
it with the wheel he was carrying
before fleeing.
On March 31 last year, Harris-
Paul again approached a victim
who was cycling with a friend,
asking for a turn on their bike.
The victim reluctantly agreed
but then asked for it back as he
needed to go home. Harris-Paul
said he would go with him.
The victim’s friend left to go
home.
Harris-Paul led the victim into
an alleyway near Jellie Park and
became increasingly aggressive,
accusing him of getting his
friend to call the police.
The victim repeatedly asked
for his bike back, saying he
needed to go home to which
Harris-Paul replied: “If you say
that again, I’ll beat the s*** out
of you”.
He then pulled a knife out of
his pocket and threatened to
smash the victim before making
off with his bike.
But the teen’s theft wasn’t just
limited to bikes.
In January last year, Harris-
Paul stole packets of steak and
bacon from Countdown at
Northlands by shoving them
down his pants and leaving the
store.
On February 5 last year, Harris-Paul
and a co-offender were
seen driving a car that had been
stolen from the owner’s driveway
in Spreydon. That same day the
pair went into Pascoes the Jewellers
at Northlands, asking staff to
try on watches.
When given a Seiko watch,
valued at $1425 they left the store
without paying for it.
Twenty minutes later the pair
went to another Pascoes at The
Palms and again asked to try on
watches.
They tried on a Seiko watch
valued at $1200 and a G-Shock
watch valued at $1249 before
the co-offender said: “I will have
that” and they both left the store
without paying.
A few days later, in Redwood
Minimart Harris-Paul stole a
phone, valued at $400 that a
customer had accidentally left on
the counter.
Harris-Paul was charged with
five counts of theft, unlawfully
getting into a motor vehicle, aggravated
robbery, intimidation,
unlawfully taking a bicycle, and
robbery.
The Crown prosecutor said the
harm caused to the victims was
significant which Harris-Paul
showed “little to no” understanding
of.
The prosecutor said any credit
for Harris-Paul’s youth should
be minimal, given his previous
convictions.
Judge Campbell Savage said
the credit Harris-Paul continued
to be given for his youth would
not last forever.
“I acknowledge you didn’t have
an easy start to life but that’s not
a card you can keep playing,” the
judge said.
“You’re only a kid and you’ve
got a lot of time left, use it
wisely.”
The judge imposed an end
sentence of two years and 11
months imprisonment.
$2.5 million
view – and a
free Bentley
• By Nikki Preston
A THREE-BEDROOM luxury
home in Akaroa has sold for $2.5
million – more than $600,000
above its RV.
The fact the house
came with a free Bentley
could have helped with
the price.
The lifestyle property,
which sits on 1.52ha off
Purple Peak Rd, had been
on the market for several
years, but the most recent
listing made it clear the
owner wanted it sold.
Bayleys listing agents
Bianca Davidson and Chris
Mangels asked buyers to ignore
previous price indications,
saying: “This resort-style
property is required to be sold on
or before auction day.”
The vendor was also willing
Bianca
Davidson
to throw in flat screen TVs,
imported furniture, quality
appliances and a variety of
artworks, as well as the 2005
Bentley Continental GT V12, to
sweeten the deal.
At the auction on
Thursday, bidding kicked
off at $1.75 million before
grinding to a halt.
After 20 minutes of
negotiation, the property
was back on the market
with a new bid of $2.5
million. No other bids
were made and the
property was sold 10
seconds later.
The Mediterranean-style home
is surrounded by bush with
impressive views over Akaroa
Harbour.
It has a suite of additional
extras, such as a heated inground
pool with automatic
cover and retractable roof, a spa
and a Swedish sauna. Davidson
said the owner flew over from
Sydney to use it a few months a
year.
The rest of the time it was
maintained by housekeepers,
project managers, builders,
landscapers and gardeners.
“It’s purely just been a luxury
retreat for him when he’s been
able to get away,” Davidson said.
“It’s probably one of the
most spectacular properties in
Akaroa.
“The garden is absolutely
beautiful, you’ve got stunning
views, the house offers all you
would need – great outdoor
flow and outdoor living spaces,
sunrooms.
“All the bells and whistles you
would want for a getaway or a
retreat.”
End of an era for 99-year-old cottage
• By Tony Simons
ONE OF THE oldest homes
in the Riccarton Bush area has
sold at auction for $1.43m to two
former neighbours, who intend
to demolish it and build new
homes on the site.
The 911sqm property at 18
Kauri St is on the corner of Kauri
and Rata Sts, just south of the
bush. It includes a decaying single
storey cottage that has been
in the same family since it was
built in 1924.
Built by Tom and Daphne
McGee, it was one of the first
homes in Kauri St. (The site had
been part of the Deans farm). It
remained in the McGee family
until the recent sale and, until
2006, had been occupied by their
daughter, Betty Cauldfield, who
died that year.
The property sold to lawyermediator
John Hardie and his
partner Marie Mullins, and local
developer John Campbell.
Hardie is well known as the
Government-appointed investigator
who worked with the city
council on its housing intensification
plan.
“We intend to build a house
for ourselves on the corner,” said
Hardie.
He and Campbell used to be
neighbours across the street.
Campbell said he intends to
build his house under the existing
building rules. It will be a
stand-alone two-storey house in
keeping with the character of the
area, he said.
The granddaughter of the Mc-
Gee’s, Sally McPherson, said she
will be sad to see the cottage go.
It was our family home, she said.
“My great-grandparents, who
lived in Robinsons Bay on Banks
Peninsula, could never understand
why Tom and Daphne
wanted to build in Riccarton, as
it was so far out in the country,”
she said.
“Soon after it was built, my
grandmother insisted grandfather
build a stone wall around it
to stop cows trampling the rose
garden on their way to milking,
where McDonalds and Westfield
Mall is now,” said McPherson.
She said her mother used the
coal range in the house to cook
and heat the water until the day
she died.
“It is still in there,” she said.
The property is next door to
a heritage-listed house built
in 1925, now owned by peace
campaigners Kate Dewes and
Rob Green.
Despite its historic past, the
cottage at 18 Kauri St is not
protected.
The auctioneer opened the bidding
at $600,000 and it went past
$1m with at least five bidders still
involved.
While the final price may be a
record for a single residential site
in the area, in late 2021 a much
smaller 524sqm property in
nearby Rimu St, which included
an old weatherboard bungalow,
sold for $1.132m.
Netball icon’s dream home for sale
• By Diana Clement
CANTERBURY netball legend
Joan Harnett-Kindley is putting
her $4 million-plus dream home
on the market.
The four-bedroom designer
property in Wānaka, where she
and husband Don now live, goes
to auction on April 20.
Harnett-Kindley played 116
internationals for New Zealand
from 1963 to 1974, including
three world championships, 45
of them as captain.
The property up for sale was
built by Harnett-Kindley and
her husband nearly 15 years ago,
replacing an old bach that had
previously sat on the 1993sqm
section.
The house has an RV of $4.25
million and is a standout in
Wanaka. It looks over a river, has
views of Mt Gold and Mt Maude,
and comes with a full-size tennis
court.
Harnett-Kindley said when
the house was being built earthworks
were carried out to raise
the ground level by 4m to protect
against flooding, with the designer
home sitting 5m above the
level of the original bach.
The home is built in schist
stone to ensure it was in keeping
with the environment, a design
feature that Harnett-Kindley is
especially proud of.
“It just belongs here. And I
think that’s the nicest part about
it,” she said.
Harnett-Kindley built up a
real estate business Christchurch
after retiring from netball in the
1970s, and later became a director
of her husband’s real estate
business in Wanaka.
She also became a judge for
the Master Builders house of
the year competition. She said
ON THE BALL:
Canterbury
netball legend
Joan Harnett-
Kindley
played 116
internationals
for New
Zealand
before
building up
a real estate
business.
experience in the competition
helped her with the design of the
property, which was carried out
by architect Ken Warburton.
“We had a really lovely experience
with Ken Warburton, because
he knew what we wanted
and the way he designed it was
exactly the way we wanted,” she
said.
Harnett-Kindley, who just celebrated
her 80th birthday, said
she still had a passion for sport,
playing tennis on the property’s
court.
But she felt the size of the
home and section was too big for
the couple’s current lifestyle.
“We’re on half an acre of
land. As one gets older it’s a
lot of work. We’ve got to move
while we can still enjoy the new
(home).”
Listing agent Anna Findlay
said the house was one of the
best in the area, and one of the
few larger homes on the riverfront.
“A lot of the properties along
the riverfront are old original
baches,” she said. “Land is very
tightly held in this area.”
Both Findlay and Harnett-
Kindley think the house would
appeal to Auckland buyers,
although South Islanders have
also been looking.
“It could be someone for
Auckland. People there have had
such a bad time,” said Harnett-
Kindley.
“We think it could also be
someone from here who likes the
outlook and wants access to the
river, the boating, the fishing and
the skiing. It’s all here, you see,
right on our doorstep.”
SPRAWLING: The road leading into the 170ha Roydon
Quarry on Jones Rd between Templeton and Weedons.
be filled in November.
Investigation finds marginal issue at
contentious Templeton quarry
• By Daniel Alvey
A “MARGINAL noncompliance”
has been found at
Roydon Quarry following an
investigation.
A complaint
was made to the
Selwyn District
Council by former
Selwyn mayor
Bill Woods in
Bill
Woods
February, who
had numerous
concerns over the
construction of
the quarry by Fulton Hogan on
Jones Rd, between Templeton
and Weedons.
On-site processing and sales
at the quarry are set to get under
way in mid-2024.
In a letter seen by The
Star, each of Woods’s concerns
are addressed by the district
council.
The first was the removal of
saleable material from the site
to the Fulton Hogan Pound
Rd facility, which the district
council found to be “inert material,”
therefore not breaching the
consent.
The second issue raised by
Woods was the incomplete construction
of the bund, with gaps
on Jones Rd and Curraghs Rd.
The gap on Jones Rd was
considered marginal non-compliance
by the district council.
The gap was left due to overhead
powerlines, with Fulton Hogan
proposing fencing and planting
to take its place, with the district
council to work with Fulton
Hogan to find a solution.
The gap on Curraghs Rd is due
to be filled once the perimeter
walkway is completed, with
the walkway and associated
viewing platform to be finished
in November.
“Fulton Hogan will continue
to constructively work with
council compliance teams and
complete works on the perimeter
bund and other site activities
to meet the consent conditions
requirements before the site
becomes fully operational in
mid-2024,” a Fulton Hogan
spokesperson said in response to
the investigation.
Woods also said the bund was
supposed to be made entirely
of topsoil, which was found to
not be the case by the district
council.
The district council said the
consent has been “actively monitored,”
since 2020, with the last
site visit taking place on March 6.
Woods has responsed to the
investigation by asking for an
affadvit from either the district
council or Fulton Hogan providing
evidence of inert material not
being sold, its composition, and
where it is being stored.
In response, Selwyn District
Council regulatory manager
Susan Atherton did not think it
necessary to provide an affidavit
to Woods.
“Council compliance staff
frequently visit the site as part of
the resource consent monitoring
process and we have investigated
the issues raised with us,”
Atherton said.
Woods has not accepted the
district council’s response and
told The Star he is now looking
for other evidence that supports
his allegations.
Mother’s heartbreak: ‘Did his
life mean nothing to you?’
• By Emily Moorhouse
A WOMAN who was on
methamphetamine when she
caused a crash that killed her
fiancé has continued to re-offend
following her sentence of home
detention.
Now the dead man’s mother
has asked her former daughterin-law
if her son’s life meant
nothing to her.
Shizelle Harland was behind
the wheel with meth in her
system when she drifted on to
the wrong side of the road. She
collided head-on with a van,
killing her fiancé Joshua Ryder.
On Friday, Harland appeared
in the district court, where she
was re-sentenced for the fatal
2021 collision. She was also
sentenced on new charges.
In an emotional victim impact
statement, Ryder’s mother
told the court losing a child
is the worst pain she has ever
experienced.
“I still experience the pain of
losing Josh every single day
. . . how do you get over losing a
child?”
She expressed disappointment
and concern that Harland
continued to breach home
detention, the sentence she
received for the crash that killed
Ryder.
“Did his life mean nothing to
you?” Ryder’s mother thought
about her son every day and said
the realisation he was dead hit
her like a “punch in the tummy.”
She said home detention was a
“small price to pay for a life.”
On July 7, 2021, Ryder was
driving home from hospital after
visiting a friend in Christchurch.
Harland and another passenger
were in the car.
Harland asked Ryder to pull
over so she could drive because
he was tired and swerving over
the road.
She overtook a car at excessive
speed, south of Dunsandel.
Shortly afterwards, she drifted
onto the wrong side of the road
and collided head-on with a van.
Both Ryder and the other
passenger weren’t wearing seat
belts.
Ryder died at the scene, while
the other passenger, who suffered
broken ribs, a broken wrist, a
cracked pelvis, an air bubble in
his lung and extensive bruising
to his lower body, was taken to
Christchurch Hospital.
Harland was also taken to the
hospital and subsequent tests
showed she had meth in her
system. She was also diagnosed
with a moderate brain injury.
She was charged with
aggravated careless driving
causing death and injury
and was sentenced to home
detention. But it wasn’t long
before she breached it.
The summary of facts stated
in May last year, Harland stole a
caravan from a property.
In August, she stole an axe and
kindling from a shed at a private
dwelling, and then in November
police searched her home and
found an air rifle, 61.29 grams
of cannabis, a used meth pipe, a
modified bong and a cannabis
PRISON TIME: Shizelle Harland was the driver involved in
a collision that killed her fiancé Joshua Ryder.
grinder. Police also found 0.41g
of cocaine and a stolen electric
bike valued at $4399.
The Crown said imprisonment
was the only appropriate
outcome, given Harland had
continued to breach her previous
sentence of home detention to
re-offend.
Harland’s lawyer Matthew
Bonniface said time spent in
custody was a much-needed
“reality check” for his client,
who was genuinely
remorseful for her
actions.
“The person I speak
to over the phone now
in prison is entirely
different to the one
I met a few months
ago.”
He said the
address at which
Harland was serving
her home detention
sentence had set her
up for failure, leading to her reoffending
as she “fell victim” to
Matthew
Bonniface
pre-exposed struggles with drug
addiction.
Bonniface said following the
death of Ryder, Harland did
well for a while but then gave
up on herself. He said she now
understood compliance with
her sentence was a necessity and
she was willing to participate in
rehabilitation.
Judge Brian Callaghan said
while Harland seemed to be on
a road to recovery, imposing
another sentence of home
detention would not be
responsible.
“I accept that custody
hasn’t been an easy
task for you, but it’s not
supposed to be,” he told
her.
He sentenced Harland
to 14 months in prison
for the new charges
and seven months for
the driving charges
resulting in Ryder’s death.
Callaghan imposed an end
sentence of 21 months in prison.
Burglary victim
frustrated by
police progress
over break-in
GETAWAY: The distinctive Mercedes Sprinter van, registration
KPD407, involved in the Burnham and Tai Tapu burglaries.
• By Daniel Alvey
A MAN who got into a scuffle
after surprising a burglar in his
home says police don’t appear to
be acting quick enough to find
the offender.
The Burnham resident was
visited by police last week for
the first time since the burglary
on March 9 – even though he
identified who he thinks is the
offender two days after the
break-in.
“It just seemed to be no further
ahead from the day it happened,”
he told The Star.
The burglar drove off in a
distinctive white Mercedes
Sprinter van, registration
KPD407 – the same vehicle
involved in a burglary in
Tai Tapu on Boxing Day.
Police have identified the
registered owner of the van, but
it appears it is not the person
who committed the burglaries.
Police told the Burnham
resident last week mugshots were
being gathered of a potential
suspect, but they had to be
sourced from Wellington.
But two days after the scuffle
with the burglar, the resident
said he chanced on a police
officer when he was at Rolleston
BP. The officer turned out to be
from the Ashburton station.
He didn’t know the officer but
discussed his burglary and she
showed him a photo on her
cellphone of a person he believed
was the burglar.
“She said do you think this is
the guy, and it probably did look
like him, but that was the only
shot I have seen,” he said.
Police who went to his house
last week took away a flavoured
milk container possibly left by
the burglar. The resident found
it soon after police had attended
on the day. He rang the police
105 number to let them know
it could contain forensic DNA
evidence. He was surprised it
had taken them so long to pick
it up.
The resident put it in the fridge
in a plastic bag to preserve any
forensic evidence.
“I thought it should have
DNA and possibly it could have
fingerprints,” he said.
Police conducted a crime scene
examination on the day they
dusted the house for fingerprints.
“They told me it was
unlikely there was going to be
fingerprinted because he was
likely to be wearing gloves.
“They dusted things like
handles and drawer pulls, but
nothing showed up,” said the
resident.
“I know they have many
serious things going on, but I
think this is serious enough. The
guy is likely out scoping other
places, he’s got a mobile home so
he can cover a large area.”
The van involved in the
burglaries has been sighted
numerous times at a social
housing unit in Woolston.
A nearby resident has called
police to alert them to it. A person
who comes and goes to the unit
where the van is parked matches
the description of the suspect.
He is well tanned, stockily built,
heavily tattooed on the arms and
legs and is middle aged.
Police would not answer
specific questions from The Star.
“Further information was
received in relation to this matter
over the last week and police are
following all potential lines of
inquiry,” a spokesperson said.
Advantage - Emma
KORU NUTRITION
Emma has lived and
breathed tennis her entire
life. She plays with friends
at the local club, talks
about it at work and is
passionately competitive.
However, as the years
have gone by, her joints
have begun to betray her.
She began feeling off the
pace. Even simple tasks
like walking up the stairs
or carrying in bags of
groceries became tiring.
As Emma’s motivation
to get onto the court
was fading, she began to
worry that if she didn’t do
something soon, her friends
would start to notice.
That’s when a colleague
at work introduced her to
Koru FX. They’d been
using it for a few months
and was raving about how
much it had supported
her own joint health...
Sceptical at first, Emma
decided that anything was
worth a try.
The following week,
Emma arrived at the courts.
Awaiting the start of her set,
she quietly applied some
of the Koru FX across her
knees and wrists.
Usually, her joints would
pulsate and distract her
from the game but as
Emma dashed from side
to side returning shot after
shot, she discovered that
her joints were feeling
supported.
What she didn’t know
was that as she played,
the antioxidants she’d just
applied to her joints were
getting to work. All she
could notice was a slight
cooling sensation as she
continued with the game.
With Koru FX, Emma
felt like she had a secret
weapon over her opponents
on the court, but she also
had a secret to share with
the people she loved most.
Emma went on to win
that game... (But sadly, she
lost the next...)
A CURIOUS seal has made
its way to a rock on Te Roto o
Wairewa/Lake Forsyth – 6km
from its ocean home.
Lincoln University senior
lecturer Rob Radics spotted the
large seal in the freshwater lake
while he was kayaking.
“I’ve never seen a seal on that
lake before,” he said.
“I am not an expert. However,
this is a common seal in New
Zealand and she
is a female by
her size.
“I suspect the
seal escaped
the storm, high
winds and sea
last week to the
lake.
“Now she is
either stuck or
likes the place. Unfortunately,
the first one is more likely,” he
said.
Radics said the seal would
have to climb over a 10m-high
loose gravel hill to return to the
sea.
“That seal should not be there.
(The lake) is freshwater and has a
high level of toxic algae,” he said.
Radics believed the freshwater
may have a detrimental effect on
the seal’s health.
“If she cannot relocate to
the sea, she potentially will be
poisoned by the toxic algae or
have issues due to the freshwater
living.”
Radics was also worried about
what the seal has been eating.
He called the Department of
Conservation’s emergency line
when he came across the seal.
DOC Mahaanui supervisor
biodiversity Craig Alexander
said it is unusual for a seal to
be in the lake but he was not
concerned about its welfare.
“We don’t think it’s stuck and
expect it will find its way back
to sea when it’s ready. So we’re
not planning to intervene here,”
Alexander said.
“Seals can be curious and
exploratory by nature and, from
time to time, they can pop up in
unexpected places.”
He had never seen a seal on
the lake before and DOC has
not received any reports of them
being spotted there before.
Alexander said anyone
who sees a seal should stay at
least 20m away and exercise
caution near the animal. If
you spot a seal on Lake Forsyth,
phone 0800 362 468 to report it
to DOC.
The first four five-metre-tall
columns were boxed and filled
with concrete.
Te Kaha project delivery chief
executive David Kennedy said
the work in the south-west corner
of the site signalled the start of
the next phase of the 30,000-seat
arena’s construction.
“From this point on, people
are going to see real tangible
progress happening on-site as
the contractors begin the vertical
construction,” said Kennedy.
The ground improvement work
was completed ahead of schedule
two weeks ago, while the
substructure continues to work
north and east across the site.
“At this point, about 75 per
cent of the southern stand
and about half of the western
stand substructures have been
completed,” Kennedy said.
“We’re pleased with progress
and that the project remains in
line with its programme and
budget.”

Ice bath
record
smashed
• By Geoff Sloan
CANCER SURVIVOR Josh
Komen has set a new unofficial
New Zealand ice bath record.
On Wednesday last week, the
35-year-old managed to stay
in the icy water for 21 minutes.
His stint also raised more than
$85,000 for charity.
The Greymouth cancer
survivor was raising awareness
and funds for the Bone Marrow
Cancer Trust and Ranui House.
That’s where the two-time
leukaemia survivor and his family
stayed while he underwent
life-saving treatment at nearby
Christchurch Hospital.
“For me, this is not about a record.
It’s just about raising awareness
for Ranui House and we’ve
really done that and I’m absolutely
stoked with the result.”
About 40 other hardy dippers
joined Komen in the two-degree
water for shorter stints.
TWO PAIRS of New Zealand’s
smallest bird continue to live
in bush near Akaroa – more
than a year after they were first
spotted.
The rifleman were first seen in
the reserve by a city council park
ranger in late 2021.
Typically, rifleman prefer a
more mature forest than that on
Banks Peninsula.
City council
biodiversity
team leader
Alison
Evans said
rifleman are
at extremely
Alison Evans high risk from
predators.
The birds choose to nest in
holes of native trees, where they
are preyed on by rats, possums
and other pests.
“Rats and stoats easily get into
their holes in trees.
“They’re like sitting ducks in
there,” Evans said.
To protect the current
Misty Peaks Reserve rifleman
population of four and boost
their numbers, the city council,
Refuge Ecology and Banks
Peninsula Conservation Trust
placed 51 nesting boxes in the
area during April last year.
“In many areas, there aren’t
HOPEFUL: City council ranger MacKenzie Flight checks a rifleman nesting boxes.
many native trees left with these
kinds of holes. By providing
boxes you’re providing them
with a safe place,” Evans said.
The boxes are designed to
replicate the typical natural
nesting place of the birds.
At the beginning of the project,
the city council was aware of two
male and two female riflemen/
titipounamu living on Banks
Peninsula. A year later the same
two pairs are still living in the
area.
While the number of rifleman
has not increased at the reserve
since the project began, Evans
is pleased the two pairs are still
around.
“We haven’t seen any using the
boxes, but we wouldn’t expect
them to be using the boxes just
yet,” Evans said.
She does not think the city
council will see the birds in the
boxes for about two or three
years, when they need a place to
nest.
“In the meantime, what we’ve
been concentrating on more
is the predator control there,’’
Evans said.
“The city council is working
will Pest Free Banks Peninsula,
primarily on possum control in
the area.
“We’ve got AT220 traps in
(Misty Peaks Reserve) which
reset themselves.
“We want to know which
species are going to flourish as a
result of no possums.
“We’ve been cleaning up a lot
of possums from those traps, so
that will be really good to have
them gone.”
Rifleman are very sparsely
dispersed, which makes them
hard to track down.
Due to this, Evans does not
have an estimate of how many
rifleman there are across New
Zealand.
“There’s very few around,
they’re quite secretive birds.
“But they’re hanging in there.”
In the next two to three years,
Evans’ goal is to see rifleman
flourish.
HILLMORTON HIGH SCHOOL
Ann Brokenshire, Principal’s Message
APRIL 2023
Kia Ora Koutou,
Term One has been very busy with a range of
activities both in and out of classrooms. Students
who participate in the wide breadth of activities do
indeed become well-rounded and accomplished
young people.
Some of these activities have included Polyfest, an
evening at Te Aratai College celebrating Pasifika
student leadership and academic excellence,
summer sports, students practising for Showquest,
our Year 9 Camps, along with a vast array of clubs,
such as Science and robotics.
Early next term, the construction of our new
Ministry of Education funded Sports Centre begins.
We are wanting to build a large garage as part
of this venture to hold our well-stocked outdoor
education gear used for the likes of our Year 9
camps. We have raised two-thirds of the funds
required and would welcome any community
donations to see us finish fundraising for this
project.
With input from our parents, whānau and the wider
community we are able to make school activities
available to all, no matter their background.
We thank you all for helping us to achieve our
vision of “With our communities we nurture wellrounded
and accomplished young people, prepared
and ready for life.”
Year 9 camps at
Orton Bradley
The annual three-day Year 9 camps at Orton
Bradley Park remain an integral component of the
transition into Year 9 at Hillmorton High School.
They epitomise the school values of
Turangawaewae, Whanaungatanga, Mana and
Ako. Key highlights for most of the students were
the water-based activities (kayaking, coasteering
and the jetty jump) based in the beautiful
Diamond Harbour area. While, for many others,
their best memories are the mountain biking,
especially the Big Dipper, Gaga Dodgeball battles,
bush walks, spotlight or the high ropes course to
name a few.
We would like to acknowledge the Level One
Outdoor Education student leaders and peer
support leaders. The leadership, initiative, service
and support they provided all classes on camp
was absolutely stunning! It was truly authentic
leadership, strengthening relationships across
the class / school, assisting students to step
out of their comfort zone and making it a truly
memorable experience for all. Thank you.
Finally - a big thank you to the Halswell Lions
Club for continuing to deliver the school lunches
daily and Adventure Specialties Trust for your
expertise and professionalism in delivering safe
and adventurous camp experiences. Bring on
Year 9 camps 2024!
Hillmorton to Houston
This will soon be the reality for The Tigers, a Year 10 robotics team, who, supported by staff
and family, are going to Dallas, Texas this month to compete against teams from Canada,
China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America in the 2023 VEX Robotics
World Championships. Their mission – to build the best robot.
Competing with Tobor (robot in
reverse) The Tigers have had a year
to design and build a robot that
can fire orange discs across the
floor – both with pre-programmed
commands and with a controller
– landing them on a target. They
gained entry to the world-level
championships through being a
finalist at the national championships
in November last year; the only
South Island team to make the cut.
Topping off the competition, the
students will visit NASA’s base in
Houston while away.
TAPA class - Polyfest and
community tour
Our TAPA class attended the 2023 Christchurch Polyfest, held for the first time at Hagley
Park in front of a record-breaking audience. The 45-student class performed pacific dances
from Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands.
Following the success of our Polyfest performance, the TAPA class was able to satisfy some
of the many requests from the community’s primary schools to perform for their students,
visiting Addington, Our Lady
of the Assumption, Hoon
Hay, Spreydon, and Rowley
schools.
Going back to former schools
and reconnecting with
teachers and principals was a
great experience for many of
the TAPA students.
We look forward to further
developing and maintaining
these relationships in the
future.
International students are back!
With New Zealand’s borders open in 2023 it has been wonderful to welcome international
students back to Hillmorton High School. The year started soundly with 56 students
enrolled for Term One from a range of countries - Cambodia, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong,
Japan, Republic of Korea, Thailand and Viet Nam - and for a range of time, from two weeks
to multiple years.
One of the highlights of the orientation programme was a day at Living Springs where the
students had to learn to work together to solve challenges, and to demonstrate they were
stronger as a group than as individuals, despite their language and cultural differences.
It has been a pleasure having the international students at Hillmorton this term as they
have discovered their Turangawaewae in a place far from their natural home. They have
impressed regularly with their Mana and willingness to engage in Ako in their second or
third language.
With enrolments strong for the remainder of the year, we look forward to the ongoing
success of the international programme while enhancing the global citizenship
opportunities of all Hillmorton students.
By-elections: Ratepayers shouldn’t foot the bill
The Star (March 30, page
1,) reported that two recentlyelected
civic politicians chose to
leave their new positions.
One (Reuben Davidson)
has moved on to more responsibility
in the Labour Party.
Fair enough, I suppose.
The other (Shreejana Chhetri)
has resigned because she prefers
to stay in her present job. Shame
on her and the Labour Party for
allowing this to happen.
A by-election will cost many
thousands of taxpayer dollars.
If people submit their names for
election, it is expected that they
will take up the
job if elected to it.
One could
extend this line of
thinking to our
last New Zealand
prime minister
but I was so happy
to see her go that I
really didn’t mind
her breaches of her
Reuben
Davidson
often-stated promises to stand
in the upcoming general election
(made late last year). I did,
however, get up
and dance on the
sidewalk when
I first heard the
good news.
-Lorne Kuehn,
Avonhead
Shreejana
Chhetri
My belief is that
those who create a
by-election should
pay, not the ratepayers nor taxpayers
should it be a minister.
I also agree that the candidate
who polled second in elections
should be promoted to the vacant
position. Even if that person
resigns on medical grounds.
Neither of the two councillors
should have stood knowing
they were going to resign. As for
Chhetri, she should have thought
about her family commitments
before standing.
Future for Local
Government Review
Last week Craig Pauling asked “What
will local government look like?’’
From my understanding of the bill
before Parliament, all regional councils
will be replaced with 15 “local’’ councils.
With all the major work of city councils
then being done by these regional
councils, our city councillors will be
reduced to being “wellness officers’’ –
whatever that means.
However you may feel about our present
councils, you will have no control over
how our taxes/rates are spent with this
new centralised, unelected body.
They could pool all the funds together
for their area and decide the best use is to
make bike lanes on our one-lane bridges,
or make completely new bike-only bridges
next to our one-lane bridges, and there are
a few of those around.
From my viewpoint, the future of local
government is anything but local.
FIREARMS LICENCE HOLDERS
THINGS YOU NEED
TO KNOW BEFORE
‘THE ROAR’AND
GAME BIRD SEASON
Information from Te Tari Pūreke - Firearms Safety Authority
If you’re a firearms licence holder, you’ll need
to know about changes to the storage and
transport rules for firearms and ammunition,
and changes to the seven rules of firearms
safety.
Regulations were updated in February 2022,
and to help Kiwis make sense of those
changes, Te Tari Pūreke, the new firearms
regulator, published a Secure Storage and
Transport Guide.
You can download a copy of the Secure
Storage and Transport Guide from www.
firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/firearms-safety
Storage and transport for firearms and ammunition, key points
Transportation
If you’re driving to a hunting location, your
firearm needs to be inoperable during your
travel and, ideally, concealed from view. This
means removing the bolt or an essential part
(or if that’s not possible, applying a trigger or
cable lock), or transporting the firearm in a
locked carry case.
The ammunition needs to be separately and
securely stored in a locked glove box or similar
storage area, if practical.
And please, whatever you do, once you’ve
finished using your firearm, lock it away. Never
leave any firearms in your ute, shed, home or
vehicle unsecured at any time.
The only exceptions to the firearms and
ammunition transport rules are if you’re
using the firearm on a farm for farm-related
activities, or you’re doing legally-authorised
hunting or pest control (such as a regional
council employed pest controller) and the
licence holder is in the
vehicle or the immediately
vicinity of the vehicle with
the firearms in it.
Make sure you read or
download a free copy
of the storage and
transport guide to keep
up to date with the
details of the changes:
www.firearmssafetyauthority.
govt.nz/firearms-safety/storagetransportation
Ammunition
All ammunition must now be stored in
a locked container. You can now only
store ammunition with firearms in a
gun safe that has a separate lockable
compartment with a different key than
the key for the gun safe. You must
keep these keys separate.
If your safe doesn’t have a separate lockable
compartment, you need to store ammunition
in its own secure storage container with a key,
combination, or padlock, or in a stout locked
cupboard.
Taking a break when you’re travelling
with firearms
For those who travel with firearms to hunt
locations, your inoperable and secured firearm
can be left in your vehicle unattended, for
example during a break in a journey, for up to
60 minutes. But you need to lock your vehicle
and stay within the immediate area or vicinity
of the vehicle and meet other conditions.
ammunition or other arms items be left
We want to enable the legitimate use of firearms
for feeding our whānau, conservation, farming
safe. This involves making sure firearms licence
holders are fit and proper to possess firearms
and are meeting the obligations of their licence.
New Zealand will have a firearms registry from
CLOSE CALL: St Bede’s College led for the majority of the Maadi Cup race on Saturday but a late surge by Hamilton Boys’ High meant the winner had
to be decided through a photo finish.
PHOTO: PICTURE SHOW LTD
Golden haul at Maadi Cup
Christchurch schools
have dominated
the pinnacle of New
Zealand high school
rowing – the Maadi
Cup regatta. Jaime
Cunningham reports
FOUR YEARS after they made a
pact to row through high school
together, the St Bede’s College
under-18 coxed eight have won
the Maadi Cup.
In arguably the greatest race
in the regatta’s history, Hamilton
Boys’ High almost pipped St
Bede’s at the end of the 2km
course on Lake Karapiro on
Saturday.
Commiseration hugs quickly
turned into leaps of joy for St
Bede’s when the final result
showed the crew had won by
0.06sec. The college last won the
Maadi Cup in 1991.
Head coach Dale Maher was
near the finish line and thought
his crew had held on for the win
but admitted he couldn’t bear to
watch the race.
“I give Hamilton credit as they
were the fastest boat crossing
the line but obviously not fast
enough,” he said.
“I saw the guys giving each
other hugs and I thought we
hadn’t done it. Then I saw them
jumping up and down. It was a
real emotional roller-coaster.”
Maher has now completed
the rare feat – and may even be
the first – to coach two different
schools to victory in the Maadi
Cup and Levin Jubilee Cup. He
coached St Andrew’s College
to its first Maadi Cup in 2017,
led St Margaret’s College to
victory in 2001 and won four
consecutive titles with Rangi
Ruru Girls’ School from 2007 to
2010. The former New Zealand
representative can now add
St Bede’s completion of the
so-called “triple” – gold in the
premier under-18 pair, four and
eight events – to his impressive
coaching resume.
The school racked up its
highest medal tally ever at the
regatta with four gold, two silver
and two bronze. The under-18
coxed eight also recorded the
fastest time in Maadi Cup
history with 5m 42.17sec,
breaking the record by almost
10sec.
“We knew 5min 51sec was
the fastest time, so it was always
going to be our target,” Maher
said.
With St Bede’s novice coxed
four winning gold and the
novice eight finishing with
bronze, a third Maadi Cup win
in the years to come does not
look out of reach.
“The goal is always to retain
the kids,” Maher said.
“Winning medals is good
and all, but the experience and
buying into the culture is the
most important. Sometimes
success isn’t the be-all and endall.
“I’m more proud of all the boys
taking up rowing, achieving
their goals and the outstanding
culture change at St Bede’s
rowing.”
Rangi Ruru continued its
stellar Maadi Cup form from last
year at the regatta, entering 15
events and winning 11, plus two
silver and bronze medals.
Coxswain Annabel Wynn-
Williams led Rangi Ruru to the
Levin Jubilee Cup for the third
time in a row on Saturday. She
also coxed the school’s top crew
to the 2021 and 2022 titles. The
17-year-old took home four golds
and a silver at the regatta.
Rangi Ruru retained the Star
Trophy, awarded to the school
with the most points. Its crews
Dawn Cup for the 16th time.
Cashmere High School had
an impressive regatta, finishing
seventh on the Star Trophy
points table, ahead of rowing
powerhouses Hamilton Boys’
High, St Andrew’s College and
Christ’s College.
In 2021, Cashmere had a
boat in the Maadi Cup for the
first time and last year finished
fourth in the most prestigious
race of the regatta. This year
the school claimed gold at the
regatta for the first time and not
just one, but three.
The under-15 coxed octuple
won the first gold medal for
Cashmere as second-to-last
qualifiers who unexpectedly
raced home in 7min 28.47sec in
lane one.
Poppy Wyndham and Abbie
Higgins then claimed two golds
– one in the under-16 double,
and the other alongside Eliza
O’Meagher, Thea Murdie and
coxswain Meg Macdonald in the
under-16 coxed quadruple sculls.
St Andrew’s won the school’s
first gold in a premier under-18
event since they claimed the
Maadi Cup in 2017. Freddy
Todhunter won the girls’
under-18 single sculls. She
finished in 8min 1.06sec, just
over a second ahead of Otago
Girls’ High School’s Harriet
Thompson.
Christ’s College picked up gold
in the under-15 octuple sculls.
The crew finished 0.17sec ahead
of Hamilton Boys’ High, with
the school’s second crew close
behind in fourth.
St Margaret’s College finished
second to rivals Rangi Ruru
in five A finals on Friday and
Saturday but managed one gold
in the under-16 coxed eight,
ahead of Rangi Ruru’s No 1 crew.
They also picked up bronze
in the under-18 coxed eight,
clocking 6m 35.78sec, behind
Rangi Ruru’s two boats, followed
by Christchurch Girls’ High in
fourth.
Villa Maria College also won
gold in the under-18 novice
quadruple event.
Christchurch rowers were
awarded for their performances
at Maadi Cup, with 17 to trial for
the New Zealand under-19 team
and 31 for the under-18 South
Island team.
Maher has been named New
Zealand men’s under-19 sweep
team coach and hopes to be
coaching a few of his St Bede’s
rowers at the next level.
“It was on the back of my mind
Four teams target first
win in Southern League
• By Jaime Cunningham
FOUR TEAMS are still
searching for their first win in
the Southern League, despite
the scoring frenzy in the second
round.
Ferrymead Bays, Christchurch
and Cashmere Technical all
recorded their second wins last
weekend. Dunedin City Royals
and Green Island were the other
winners in round 2.
Nomads, Coastal Spirit, FC
Twenty11 and Nelson Suburbs
will be chasing their first points
when they kick off tomorrow
afternoon.
Newcomers FC Twenty11
will be at home on Good
Friday to take on Selwyn
United who are coming off the
back of a 5-0 loss to Dunedin
City Royals.
FC Twenty11 will want to
at least score their first goal of
the season after a promising
first half against Green Island
on Saturday in which both
teams were scoreless. Harrison
McLean scored two goals in the
second half – one of which was
in the first minute of added time
– to give Green Island a 2-0 win.
Coastal Spirit will also be
searching for a goal this week
when they take on Green Island
in Dunedin on Friday.
The Linfield Park-based
side have had a tough start to
the league, going down 3-0 to
neighbouring Ferrymead Bays
in the first round, followed by a
4-0 loss to defending champions
Christchurch last week.
Nomads will take on
Cashmere Technical, who
finished in sixth in the National
League last year, on their home
ground.
Declan Hickford
recorded the first goal for
Nomads this season in the
team’s 2-1 loss to Ferrymead
Bays last week.
Nomads will aim to play a
tidier game, after four yellow
cards in the second half
against Ferrymead Bays. A
mix-up between defender Jacob
Anderson and goalkeeper Tobin
Wilson prevented Nomads
gaining their first point in the
league. Anderson headed the
ball into Nomads’ net in the
87th-minute.
Ferrymead Bays will want
to extend their winning run to
three against Nelson Suburbs
at home, while Cashmere
Technical and Christchurch
United will also look to continue
their dominant start to the
season.
HALSWELL and Christchurch
United are the latest clubs to
form a women’s team to play
in the South Island qualifying
league.
In their debut game as a combined
team on Monday night,
Halswell-Christchurch fought
back from a 2-0 deficit to level
the score in the last 20 minutes.
They are is the second side in
the women’s league to merge,
after FC Twenty11 and Nomads’
combined team.
Halswell United general
manager Olivia Smith said the
decision was made late last
year, when the club approached
Christchurch United with the
idea to merge their top women’s
players.
“We realised we had a few
players who were at that level,
and basically on our own it
wasn’t going to happen,” Smith
said.
Another women’s team merger
MERGE: Halswell’s Emma Batey is one of 19 players in the
newly-merged Halswell-Christchurch side.
“We knew Christchurch
were losing a few players so we
approached them. It’s about
working together so our players
can play football.”
Coached by Tony Gumley,
Halswell-Christchurch have a
squad of 19 and will play at both
the United Sports Centre and
Halswell Domain this season.
Christchurch United’s blue
strip will be the team’s home
jersey while Halswell’s green
will be their away strip.
Smith said Halswell is focused
on keeping players and the decision
to merge was about making
sure their best players stay at the
club and progress through the
grades.
“We’ve got a big platform
from the 10th grade up and one
of the biggest girls’ programmes
in Christchurch,” Smith said.
Hornby
unbeaten
• By Will Evans
PERENNIAL club rugby league
grand finalists Linwood Keas
and Hornby Panthers are the
only undefeated teams after the
opening fortnight of the season.
Making their first appearance at
home this year, defending champs
the Keas carved out an impressive,
clinical 30-6 victory over
Northern Bulldogs on Saturday.
Linwood led 16-0 at halftime
through tries to wingers Uili
Uili and Michael Fili, and
second-rower Maoluma Sakaria.
Fullback Jerome Taefu bagged
a second-half brace and hooker
Kyle Amer also dotted down as
the Keas’ onslaught continued,
while fullback Nick Wain scored a
consolation try for the visitors.
The Panthers, coming off a
last-minute win over the Halswell
Hornets in round 1, again came
from behind in another thriller
to stay unbeaten – a 26-22 result
against a gallant Eastern Eagles
outfit.
Panthers winger Seamus Stack
and Eagles centre Peneli Peneli
both finished an absorbing
encounter with two tries apiece.
The Hornets bounced back
from their season-opening heartbreaker
with a emphatic 44-14
defeat of Riccarton Knights at
Halswell Domain.
Halswell led 18-4 at halftime
and sealed the two competition
points with five more tries after
Matatū coach takes China job
FARAH PALMER Cup head
coach Blair Baxter has taken
up a new role as assistant coach
with the China women’s sevens
team as they seek to qualify for
next year’s Olympics.
“Definitely some nerves
heading into this opportunity.
However, with that comes
growth,” said Baxter.
“There was a chance here to be
a full-time coach, get my hands
dirty, and work on the technical
and tactical aspects that’s going
to help me be a better coach
long-term. My main motivation
is a chance to grow. It’s so far
removed from what I know.
The language barrier and a
completely different culture
will force me to become a better
coach.”
Baxter has coached the
Canterbury FPC side for the last
three years, leading the team
to three home finals and two
titles. He was Matatū head
coach during their Super Rugby
Aupiki success, where the team
secured a last minute 31-33
victory over Chiefs Manawa in
the final on March 25.
“I was lucky to get the
opportunity with FPC three
years ago.
“It’s provided me
exponential growth as a person
and coach.
“Women’s rugby is a fantastic
area of our game to be involved
in. Everyone is there for the
right reasons and wants the
best and I’ve been lucky to work
with amazing individuals who
consistently drive to be the best
they can be.”
The shift to a full-time role
with China is the next step in
a coaching pathway that saw
Baxter start at Belfast before
spending seven years coaching
the Sydenham colts and
premiers. He has also coached
the Cantabrians, Canterbury
B, metro and under-19’s before
coaching the FPC side.
The vacant FPC head coach
role will be addressed in the
coming weeks, a Canterbury
Rugby spokesman said.
Hornby lose rugby
SPORT 27
league servant
• By Will Evans
HORNBY RUGBY league has
lost one of its most dedicated
servants.
Grant Woodgate (right) died
last week aged 79.
Woodgate gave nearly threequarters
of a century to the code
and his beloved club. He started
playing rugby league for Hornby
as a seven-year-old and was
named NZRL’s Volunteer of the
Month in October last year. In
between he was a premiershipwinning
player, a coach, manager,
trainer, strapper and club
president for the Panthers, and
was bestowed with life membership
of the club.
Woodgate’s family has been
closely associated with Hornby
for more than 100 years. His
father, Bill, played 22 seasons of
senior football for the club, was
a long-serving club captain – as
well as representing Canterbury
and South Island – and went on
to become a coach, manager and
Hornby life member.
Grant’s older brothers, Brent
(who played alongside Bill) and
Rex, were in Hornby’s 1952 and
’58 championship-winning
teams.
Woodgate began playing
juniors in the ‘flyweight’ grade,
eventually making his premier
debut as an 18-year-old and
featuring in Hornby teams that
took out the last four first-pastthe-post
championships from
1963-66.
Another brother, Neil, was
unable to play rugby league
due to injury, but he was club
captain when Hornby, coached
by Rex, won the inaugural CRL
premiership grand final in 1967
with a side that included Grant
and youngest brother, Schoolboy
Kiwi Billy.
Woodgate kicked the matchwinning
field goal as Mel
Cooke-coached Hornby won
the 1969 grand final 10-9 over
Marist-Western Suburbs. Billy
also shared in that grand final
success, scoring a try.
Turning down the opportunity
to play for Canterbury B in
1967 because it coincided with
his wedding, Woodgate was
later a player-coach for Hornby’s
premier and premier reserves
teams, continuing to pull on the
boots for the club until 1977.
“Grant was a rugged, rangy
loose forward – one of those
head-down, arse-up, ‘follow me,
you buggers’ types that every
good team needs,” former Press
rugby league reporter John
Coffey said.
“And he certainly helped
make Hornby good in his day.
But, unlike most retired players,
he never left the scene. Grant
was there for decades after
his playing days, as a coach,
manger, trainer, mentor and
bloke who would pick up the
discarded bandages if no one
else did.”
Woodgate was the epitome of
the backbone every grassroots
sports organisation needs to
survive and thrive. Though
unassuming, he was central to
every success Hornby Panthers
have had. That he was October
2022’s NZRL Volunteer of the
Monthreflected how much he
dedicated to the club to the very
end.
It was fitting that Hornby’s
last match before he passed
away was a thrilling, last-minute
victory over archival Halswell,
while a day after his death the
Panthers, with heavy hearts,
honoured his memory with a
hard-fought win over Eastern
Eagles.
CELEBRATION: Cashmere beat defending champions
Elmwood in the premier men’s tennis interclub final on
Saturday.
Interclub tennis
title icing on the
cake for centenary
• By Diane Keenan
CASHMERE’S WIN in the
premier men’s interclub final
was the icing on the cake for
the club celebrating its 100-year
anniversary last Saturday.
Cashmere beat the defending
champions Elmwood with the
loss of only one match, a result
that defied the closeness of the
final.
“The score really didn’t reflect
just how tight it was with two of
our wins decided in third set tie
breaks which could have gone
either way,” a humble Cashmere
team captain Matt Meredith says.
Rain was a major factor in
this year’s final which had to be
postponed from being played
outdoors at Elmwood’s home
courts the previous week. The
ham went in the fridge and
the buns and sausages into the
freezer in anticipation of a final
the following week which clashed
with Cashmere’s centennial
celebrations.
However persistent showers last
Saturday morning again dogged
the best laid plans to play the tie
at Elmwood. The decision to go
indoors was made mid-morning.
The faster indoor court surface
suited the big-serving, hardhitting
Cashmere players. In
the top doubles, brothers James
and Tim Meredith were on fire
beating Elliot Darling and Tom
Batt easily. In the second doubles
Matt Meredith and Harry Weeds
beat James Spence and Eddie
Batt 14-12 in the super tiebreak
after surviving a match point.
The wins gave Cashmere a huge
advantage going into the four
singles matches.
James Meredith had an easy
win for Cashmere, while his
team-mate Weeds came back
from a set down to win the
second set in a tiebreak and then
clinch the deciding super tiebreak
against Lawrence Darling.
Elmwood’s Tom Batt secured
his team’s only win beating Matt
Meredith in a tight, high quality
game. The number two singles
between Tim Meredith and Eddie
Batt was called off with Meredith
leading by a set as Cashmere
had an unassailable lead. Matt
Meredith says while the centenary
was a “driver” to win from
a club perspective, it was not the
only motivation. “We lost the
final to Elmwood last year and
we were all determined to turn
that around,” he says. “We always
want to win when we play them.
They are a top team – great mates
and very good players.”
Meredith says players in both
teams have been playing with or
against each other for years.
“It has been a great season
of premier tennis and we now
look forward to next year when
hopefully we will have eight
strong teams in the competition,”
he says.
Black Cap, Magician score awards
• By Jaime Cunningham
KATE ANDERSON and Chad
Bowes were the big winners
at the Canterbury Cricket
awards, taking out the three key
accolades.
The event at the Ara Institute
of Canterbury’s city campus
on Friday night wrapped up a
successful season for both the
men’s and women’s teams.
Anderson took out the
Magicians batter and player
of the year and was also voted
by her fellow teammates as the
player’s player of the year. Her
95-run cameo in the Super
Smash final in February won
the vote to be the supporter’s
performance of the year.
Bowes, who recently debuted
for the Black Caps, was awarded
the Canterbury Kings’ batter and
player of the year and was also
voted player’s player of the year.
Anderson scored 536 runs in
the 2022/23 Super Smash at an
average of 59.56, while Bowes
was a standout for Canterbury in
all three formats – scoring a total
of 1011 runs.
Will O’Rourke was awarded
for his 25 wickets in the Super
Smash and Ford Trophy with
the Kings’ bowler of the year
title. Gabby Sullivan won the
same award for the Magicians,
following her 21 wickets in the
Super Smash competition – the
most of any bowler.
Retiring Canterbury legends
Amy Satterthwaite and Todd
Astle’s careers were also
recognised by former teammates,
coaches and family.
The event concluded a season
which saw Canterbury make
four different finals in the men’s
and women’s competitions.
Satterthwaite led the
Magicians to her sixth and final
Super Smash title in February,
where she took off the bails for a
run out to get the final wicket of
the game.
The Magicians also made the
Hallyburton Johnson Shield
final, while the Kings qualified
for the men’s Super Smash final
for a second consecutive year.
The men continued their form
into the one-day format, making
the Ford Trophy which they lost
to the Central Stags last Tuesday.
Rising star follows Ko’s path
• By Neville Idour
CANTERBURY golf
professional Momoka Kobori has
continued her rise on the world
scene with a stunning suddendeath
playoff win at the Women’s
New South Wales Open.
A clutch par putt on the
final hole of regulation and
another on the first playoff
hole at Forster-Tuncurry Golf
Club secured her victory after
rounds of 70, 70,
71. Lydia Ko won
the tournament
in 2012 at the age
of 14.
“It’s awesome to
win the same event
as her, as I am
Lydia Ko
trying to follow in
her footsteps. I am
very happy about that,” Kobori,
24, said.
Kobori continued her fine
form at the weekend with a
fourth placing at the Australian
Women’s Classic at Bonville.
Her first round 75 was a hurdle
but she finished strongly with 69
and 68.
In the NSW Open it was a
dramatic final day. Kobori was
paired with amateurs Claire Shin
and Sarah Hammett in the final
group and took off with birdies
on holes 2,3 and 4 to lead by four
shots.
However, rather than a
procession to a comfortable
victory, there was be a wild chain
of events, especially on the back
nine where the lead changed
hands several times.
Ranked world No 208, Kobori
bogeyed the sixth hole and a
birdie to Shin reduced her lead
to two. At the 10th Shin eagled
the par 5 from eight feet while
Kobori made a birdie and the
lead was one.
Bogeys by both players on the
11th, while Hammett birdied
then eagled the par 5 15th from
25 feet, saw all three players tied
on -8.
Then Hammett took the lead
on the 16th, a par 3, with a birdie
from 10 feet as light rain was
falling and darkness began.
More drama would follow.
Hammett messed up 17 with a
chip shot from one side of the
green racing over the other side,
leading to a double bogey.
DRIVE: Momoka Kobori
secured victory at the
Women’s New South
Wales Open with rounds
of 70, 70, 71.
Then on the 18th, amazingly
Kobori’s ball rolled off the tee
just before she made contact
resulting in a second shot from
the right rough. She found the
bunker left of the green while
Shin had a 10 foot birdie putt for
the win after Kobori’s bunker
shot was eight feet short. Shin
missed and Kobori holed hers to
ensure a playoff.
So to the ninth hole a par 3
where Shin almost holed her
tee shot which would have been
in harmony with the wild back
nine. Kobori was short of the
green and chipped to six feet.
Shin’s makeable birdie putt
missed and raced four feet past.
Kobori again showed her mature
temperament by holing her
knee knocker. Shin then saw
her putt lip out leaving Kobori a
not unexpected yet astonishing
winner.
“Those (last two putts) were
huge. They were both huge but
that putt on the last, knowing
what was on the line, to stay in
with a chance, was especially so,”
aid Kobori.
Wills and Enduring
Powers of Attorney
People often confuse the term attorney
with the term executor. An attorney is
someone that you appoint to act for you
while you are alive. This may be a general
power of attorney, in one off situations, for
example, if you are going to be away when
a document is required to be signed. An
enduring power of attorney allows your
attorney or attorneys to act if you lose
mental capacity. This is important if you
have a health issue or accident that leaves
you lacking mental capacity and requiring
an attorney to make decisions for you.
Having enduring powers of attorney set up
to cover your personal care and welfare and
another to cover property is a key safeguard
to protect your wishes if you can no longer
make these decisions or communicate them
yourself.
An attorney’s power to act ends when
you die. This is commonly not understood,
and some attorneys believe that they
can continue to deal with the deceased’s
property including the bank accounts. It
is another common misconception that
money to cover the funeral expenses needs
to be withdrawn before the bank accounts
are frozen. Firstly, the attorney is no longer
authorised to act and secondly it is not
necessary as most banks have a process of
allowing the payment of funeral expenses
before probate is granted by application
from the executors or their lawyer.
When you die your latest Will becomes
effective and the person or persons you
have named as executors are able to start
their role of dealing with your estate. Your
executor’s first duty is to deal with your
funeral arrangements. If you have expressed
a wish in your Will for burial or cremation
or for a particular service or to not have a
funeral service at all, your executors can
take these into account. Your executors are
not bound to follow the wishes expressed
in your Will regarding your funeral
arrangements, so it is a good idea to discuss
these with the person or persons you are
appointing to check that they are agreeable
to carrying out your preference. It is also
helpful to let the persons you are appointing
know where your original Will is held and
where you keep a copy.
Setting up enduring powers of attorney
allows you to decide who you want to act
for you while you are alive and particularly
for when you cannot make decisions
yourself. Without these deeds someone
would need to apply to the court to be your
welfare guardian and/or property manager
if you lost mental capacity. And completing
a Will allows you to appoint the people you
trust to carry out your funeral wishes and to
Do you know Glucosamine has
numerous health benefits other
than just joint health?
Many know of glucosamine sulphates
amazing benefits for joint and connective
tissue health and support. Glucosamine is
a compound that occurs naturally in your
body and is present in the cartilage of your
joints as well as in your skin, bones, nails
and ligaments. Taking glucosamine in
sufficient amounts provides the body with
more building blocks to help maintain and
repair all your joints, ligaments, tendons,
connective tissue, bones, and nails as well as
supporting healthy skin, hair, blood vessels
and more. As we age the body’s production
of glucosamine declines and this is a reason
why supplementation may be beneficial.
Studies have found in athletes’ glucosamine
may protect joint tissue by preventing
the breakdown of cartilage. One study
demonstrated that supplementation with
1500mg to 3000mg of glucosamine daily
for three months significantly decreased
cartilage breakdown in college soccer
players as well as professional rugby players.
A comprehensive review of multiple studies
on glucosamine sulphates (GS) benefits
for osteoarthritis was published in a
peer-review medical journal “Therapeutic
Advances in Musculoskeletal Disease” in
December 2020. The review found that
a daily dosage of 1500mg of “GS” can
positively affect the cartilage structure,
reduce pain, and improve joint function,
and also glucose metabolism in people with
osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine has many other surprising
health benefits. Animal studies show
it can extend lifespan by around 10%.
Several large human studies have
shown glucosamine supplementation to
significantly improve cardiovascular health
and reduce mortality.
Glucosamine has been shown to reduce
age-related inflammation now considered
a leading cause of aging and mortality.
Glucosamine has also been shown to
protect your DNA against damage, improve
cellular health, create more mitochondria
and improve energy levels.
Do You Know GLUCOSAMINE
Offers Far More Benefits
Than Just
Joint Health?
Glucosamine sulphate (GS) occurs naturally in the
body. It is used in the formation of bones, nails,
ligaments, tendons, connective tissue & cartilage
– the material in all moving joints that protects and
allows them to move freely. Stiff, painful & swollen
joints are a sign of insufficient or damaged cartilage
(osteoarthritis). As we age the body’s production
of (GS) may decline & this is likely the main reason
for developing joint problems. A comprehensive
review of studies on (GS) benefits for osteoarthritis
suggests that a daily dose of 1500mg (GS) can
positively affect the cartilage structure, reduce pain
& inflammation as well as improve joint function.
benefits. Animal studies show it can extend lifespan
Present your home with
instant curb appeal
The saying “first impressions count”
can be especially true when looking
to sell your property. Property photos
are chosen to show the best features;
however, seeing the property from the
street can sway a decision. Potential
buyers can be drawn in by instant curb
appeal or discouraged by what they see.
It is easy to have an attractive frontage
with little effort. So what can you do to
improve your odds of selling by having
instant curb appeal?
Ensure your property is easy
to find with a clearly displayed
house number, and if your
mailbox is sitting on a lean or
looking a bit battered, upgrade
and get a new one that suits
your property. Perhaps locate
your house number on the
house or fence in a more
prominent place.
One of the easiest fixes is to
have trees and shrubs neatly
trimmed, with deadwood removed.
Adding pot plants with green foliage or
a splash of colour can be inviting, add
interest and enhance a dull or drab area.
However, if there are already planters
or pots, remove any dead plants or
deadhead flowers and ensure no weeds.
Also, remove any weeds from edgings,
concrete joins and spouting if they’ve
managed to find a home there.
If there is any moss, algae or grime on
driveways, walkways, patios, and decks,
throughout
using a water blaster
Christchurch
will quickly clean
them up. Likewise, front gardens that are
mulched, have stones or bark might be
The front door is an
important feature, so
refresh it with a coat of
paint or stain
best with a freshen up.
The front door is an
important feature, so refresh
it with a coat of paint or stain
and clean any glass surrounds.
Perhaps it’s time for new
door handles or fixtures with updated
hardware. Remove any cobwebs from
the entrance, have clean doormats and
sweep away any leaves. Remove any
shoes or shoe racks from the front door.
Touch up any shabby paintwork, e.g.,
fences, letterbox, employ a good window
cleaner or clean them yourself and have
your lawns mowed and possibly re-sown
if needed.
Curb appeal aims to make interested
parties want to view your home. Use
paint, plants, colour, and fixtures so that
your entranceway is clean, fresh and
welcoming.
Supporting
Flooded again: The street
that traps its residents
Thursday, April 6, 2023
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
HEIDI OUDEMANS breathed
a sigh of disdain on Saturday,
watching rain begin to pour
outside her home and knowing
exactly what would follow.
For over a decade, Oudemans
has watched floodwaters rise
outside her Avondale home
and trap her and residents of
40 other homes on her street,
potentially for days on end.
It happens every single time it
rains, and the locals have had
enough.
“If it doesn’t stop raining for
a day or two, it becomes Lake
whenever rain fell. Since the
quake, rainfall has caused the
nearby Avon River to rise and
with nowhere to go, water will
flood surrounding streets.
Residents say city council
workers cleared three nearby
drains last week, something
which “hadn’t been done for
ages”, according to one local.
Despite this work, ongoing
drainage problems are understood
to be creating the flooding
issues.
“Last night, I looked out my
bedroom window and there was
a great puddle there that wasn’t
there before, it just gets worse
and worse,” said Oudemans.
Another resident, who runs
a mechanics business out of his
garage, has to park cars elsewhere
in case of rainfall causing
flooding and damaging his
clients’ vehicles.
It is understood an elderly
resident called an ambulance on
one occasion – only for flooding
to stop the emergency vehicle
Michigan ou there,” Oudemans
said. “It’s horrible, nobody can
get out and nobody can get in.”
Oudemans lives on Tenby Pl,
which backs onto Chisnallwood
Intermediate.
The street has always been
low-lying and before the February
22, 2011 earthquake the
ground would get soft and wet
from reaching her home.
Six months ago, Oudemans
bought a 4WD vehicle as her
previous car wasn’t capable of
treading through water.
“Most of us have had to buy
one,” she said, referring to her
neighbours.
“We can’t get out any
other way. We came back from
a weekend down south one time
and our car was stuck a the
letterbox, we had to leave it until
the rain resided.”
Floodwaters will typically rise
to knee height, Oudemans said.
Last week saw floodwaters
remain for four days straight
as the rain continued to fall.
It was 20 hours before anyone
could get their cars out of their
driveways.
