Soon <strong>the</strong>y arrived at a small hill from which <strong>the</strong>y could look at<br />
<strong>the</strong> village Ibis had discovered. <strong>The</strong>re were numerous birch trunk<br />
HOUSES with thatched ro<strong>of</strong>s and smoking chimneys. Grass grew<br />
between <strong>the</strong> houses and hens roamed around. <strong>The</strong> village was split<br />
down <strong>the</strong> MIDDLE by a path. One way led to <strong>the</strong> forest <strong>the</strong>y had<br />
just left, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> seashore, although this was quite a long<br />
way from <strong>the</strong> village.<br />
While <strong>the</strong>y were busy looking at <strong>the</strong> scenery, <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> children’s<br />
voices reached <strong>the</strong>m. Victor gestured to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs to bend down<br />
and go hide behind a rock that was big enough to cover <strong>the</strong>m all.<br />
From <strong>the</strong>re, if <strong>the</strong>y kept quiet, <strong>the</strong>y could watch what was going on<br />
in a little clearing nearby.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re were three CHILDREN who must have been about ten years<br />
old, judging by <strong>the</strong>ir height. <strong>The</strong>y were kitted out with lea<strong>the</strong>r<br />
helmets and wooden swords and shields. <strong>The</strong>y were practicing<br />
fighting techniques! One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m was better than <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs and<br />
was teaching <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
A group <strong>of</strong> five boys armed with sticks suddenly rushed into <strong>the</strong><br />
clearing and started hitting out right and left. <strong>The</strong> youngest was<br />
ten and <strong>the</strong> oldest was fourteen.<br />
