While Christina was trying to convince Freydís, Leif, and Thorstein<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y were HARMLESS farmers that had come to sell wool<br />
from <strong>the</strong> sheep <strong>the</strong>y bred, Ibis and Cali were about to reach a<br />
thick branch on which <strong>the</strong>re was a red kite’s nest. <strong>The</strong>y were each<br />
climbing up one side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> birch tree.<br />
Although Ibis was very agile, Cali was lighter and had claws that<br />
she could dig into <strong>the</strong> tree bark to stop her from slipping. She<br />
reached <strong>the</strong> nest just before Ibis and found herself face to face –<br />
or beak to beak – with <strong>the</strong> red kite… which, without any warning,<br />
gave her a very painful peck.<br />
Cali lost her balance and fell. She tried to glide but she didn’t really<br />
know how and ended up crashing down onto Seldon’s head. “What<br />
