HUGE MAN over six feet tall came into <strong>the</strong> clearing. He was<br />

white beard and <strong>the</strong>re wasn’t a hair on his head. His right eye was<br />
blue and his left one was green. He stopped in front <strong>of</strong> Freydís and<br />
leaned on <strong>the</strong> handle <strong>of</strong> his axe, which was enormous – in fact, it<br />
was taller than she was.<br />
Olaf’s SONS appeared behind him: Halstein, Halfdan, Harbard,<br />
Hjalmar, and Halvard. <strong>The</strong>y stood side by side, from <strong>the</strong> tallest to<br />
<strong>the</strong> shortest. One had a black eye, one a bump on his head, one a<br />
scratch on <strong>the</strong> palm <strong>of</strong> his hand, one a cut on his cheek, and one a<br />
dislocated shoulder. <strong>The</strong>ir clo<strong>the</strong>s were crumpled and <strong>the</strong>ir hair full<br />
<strong>of</strong> bits <strong>of</strong> leaves and twigs.<br />
Leif and Thorstein stood ei<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sister with <strong>the</strong>ir wooden<br />
swords in <strong>the</strong>ir hands. Seldon’s knees were shaking. He asked, “Why<br />
is nobody trying to run? Have you all lost your minds?”<br />
Christina raised a hand to ask for silence. In a low voice, she<br />
explained, “Erik <strong>the</strong> Red’s children won’t run. Not even this GIANT<br />
