Open Evening 2023
Burnside High School is pleased to invite
members of the community to our Open
Evening on Tuesday 16 May 2023.
We are well aware of the significance
parents place on the transition from
Primary or Intermediate to Secondary
School and how important it is to make the
right decision about this transition.
Burnside High School is a large
secondary school, a centre for academic
excellence, with an outstanding record of
academic, cultural and sporting success.
The size of the school ensures that there is
an exceptionally wide range of subjects and
extra-curricular opportunities available.
This provides flexibility for students to
follow a pathway suited to their ability,
interests and skills.
The unique structure of the school
retains all the benefits of a large school but
with students in Divisions of approximately
700. This ensures that students are known
on an individual basis and are supported
and mentored by senior students,
Form Teachers, Deans and Guidance
Counsellors. This strong pastoral and
guidance focus helps
Burnside High School
students strive to
excel and develop into
well rounded New
Zealanders.
Students achieve
well above the level
of similar schools
in the attainment of
NCEA certificates and
endorsements and
perform to the highest
level in a range of
local, regional and national academic,
cultural and sporting competitions. The
school is renowned for its Specialist Music
Programme, the only such programme in
the country.
The Open Evening offers Year 8 students
and their families a chance to view the
facilities and to experience some of the
opportunities Burnside High School is
proud to offer its students.

Mairehau High School
At Mairehau High School, we really get
to know each student; students are seen,
respected and valued as individuals. The
safety and closeness of our small and
genuinely friendly and inclusive school
community enables each student to find
and develop their voice. Consistently, we
have small class sizes, and so learning is
able to be highly personalised, capitalising
on students’ strengths and ensuring

(including our Mau Rakau academy),
ESOL and Gifted-student programmes are
examples. Excellent support with NCEA
success sees students enjoy pathways to
university and a range of tertiary providers.
Through our links with tertiary study and
individualised career support, we offer
highly personalised and positive transitions
from our kura to our students’ next places
of learning or employment.
Set on a spacious, tree-bound and
easily accessible site on the North East
of Christchurch, Mairehau High School
offers an exceptional environment for all
learners. With most of the hard mahi done,
our comprehensive building programme
is near completion, and we invite you to
