GULP! RECEIVED
A HUGE
WATER
BILL?
Council moves to help
worried homeowners
• By Tony Simons
THE CITY council says it will
work with people to help find the
cause when they get unexpected
big bills for water use.
It comes after a Woolston
resident was sent a bill for $2884
for three months of water use
after averaging nearly 23,743
litres a day. That is equivalent to
having a lawn sprinkler turned
on permanently. The daily
allowance is 700 litres. Once a
household exceeds that they are
charged $1.35 for every 1000
litres of additional usage.
Another property in Sumner
has been billed $1622 for
averaging 12,300 litres a day.
But while the city council says
it will work with people to help
find why they are using so much
water, it won’t mean paying
to fix leaky pipes if that is the
cause.
City council general manager
resources and chief financial
officer Leah Scales said she
expects people with large bills to
check for leaks.
Kirsty case:
Potential
yet to be
• By Daniel Alvey and Barry
Clarke
POLICE HAVE not yet spoken
to a potential key suspect in the
unsolved Kirsty Bentley murder
case, several months after getting
a tip off.
The Star revealed in October
the tip was given to police after a
$100,000 reward was posted in a
bid to solve the cold case in July.
The person is
known to the
two men who
found 15-yearold
Kirsty’s body
at the Rakaia
Gorge 17 days
after she was
last seen alive in
1998. They told police at the time
they were in the Rakaia Gorge
area looking for cannabis plots.
Police later ruled them out as
suspects in the case.
The person known to the pair
had not featured in the police
investigation until the reward was
posted in July.
Detective Inspector Greg
Murton declined to discuss the
tip when contacted by the The
Star in October saying it would be
“unhelpful” to the investigation.
A HOUSEHOLD was saved from
a potentially life threatening fire
– by their cat.
The small fire was caused by an
electrical fault.
The occupants had taken down
their smoke alarms to change the
batteries.
They were instead luckily
woken up and alerted to the fire
by their pet cat.
The Governors Bay Volunteer
Fire Brigade responded to the
call-out on Bay Heights at 3.53am
last Thursday.
“You could never tell whether
the cat knew something was
wrong or just woke them up,”
chief fire officer Doug Burt said.
He said the occupants were
very lucky. If they had not been
woken up, it could have been
fatal, Burt said.
“The result is generally fatal
because they don’t wake up and
get out.”
The occupants would
likely have suffocated and
been poisoned by the carbon
monoxide emitted from the
blaze.
“Carbon monoxide . . . (is) a
very dangerous gas,” Burt said.
“It’s what we call the silent
death.”
His is advice to anyone inside
during a house fire: “Get out and
stay out.”
Burt said the electrical fault
which caused the blaze could
have been a construction fault or
old wires that had deteriorated
over time.
2034 Commonwealth Games bid considered
NEW ZEALAND has taken an
initial step towards hosting a
Commonwealth Games for the
first time since 1990.
The New Zealand Olympic
Committee announced it has
signalled early interest in hosting
the 2034 Commonwealth
Games.
Christchurch held the games
in 1974, with Auckland hosting
the 1950 and 1990 games.
The approach follows the
implementation of a new hosting
model by the Commonwealth
Games Federation, which allows
for a more locally tailored sports
programme and the ability for
competition to take place
across multiple cities and
regions.
NZOC chief executive
Nicki Nicol said the ability
to host the games across the
whole country under the
CGF’s new hosting model
was a big factor in New Zealand
putting its hand up for 2034.
“There are (also) a number of
social, economic and cultural
outcomes that a major game
can bring to the country. So
certainly working in partnership
with Government, that’s
really important
to us as well,” Nicol
said.
She admits the biggest
challenge will be cost,
but she’s thankful to
have the full support of
the Government and the private
sector.
Burt urged homeowners to
the private sector and how we
But where possible council
staff will also get in touch with
residents before they send the
bills out, to give advice.
Residents are responsible for
paying for excess water use, even
if it is caused by old or broken
pipes, but the city council says
they can apply for a remission if
they identify and fix the leaks.
A company that detects leaks,
Detection Services saw a big
increase in work when water
changing was first announced,
but that has levelled off since.
Manager Neil Scrutton said
his business jumped about 40
per cent last year when the city
council announced it would be
charging.
“People started checking their
meters for the first time and
found leaks they never knew they
had. Since then the demand has
levelled off,” he said.
The city council started sending
out invoices in late February
charging residents $1.35 for every
1000 litres they use over the
limit. The charging has resulted
in water use dropping by more
than 10 per cent.
Scales said council staff have
been touch with the Woolston
and Sumner homeowners and
are working with them.
“One of the big benefits
of water charging is
bringing these leaks to
the attention of property
owners so they can get
them fixed,” she said.
“Readings take place
roughly every 90 days.
The Woolston and
Sumner properties will
have both had their meters read
NEWS 5
Peak water use declines
since charges brought in
PEAK WATER use has
plummeted since excess
charges were introduced.
The city council said yesterday
it could lead to see savings
of more than $150 million, as
well as improving the city’s
sustainability.
“Over the recent summer period
there was a sharp drop in
demand on the water supply.
As a result, water restrictions
weren’t needed and pumping
costs were massively down on
previous years,” city council
acting head of Three Waters
Brent Smith said.
“Our data shows hundreds
of litres of savings during
historic high demand periods.
We saved 3300 cubic metres
of water per hour during the
past summer – equivalent to
1.5 Olympic swimming pools.
That’s similar to the amount
produced by six medium-sized
pump stations.
“It also highlights that residents
have changed their approach
to outdoor water use in
the summer months. We’re not
seeing the water supply come
under such huge pressure at
peak times, which means people
are heeding calls to water
in the morning, use hand-held
hoses and make sure irrigation
Thursday April 20 2023 The Star
is set up with water conservation
in mind.”
Smith said when demand
drops all of the pump stations
did not need tot be used at the
busiest times.
“This means there’s extra
capacity within our network to
deal with pump station issues
and maintenance during summer
months, and there’s plenty
of water in reserve for fighting
fires.”
It also means that long-term
Christchurch won’t need to
expand its water infrastructure
as much which could result in
savings of $150–200 million
over the next 50–100 years.
He said if the reduction
can be sustained, some of our
non-compliant pump stations
to meet the Government’s
stricter water standards could
be decommissioned.
A recommended change
to the excess water supply
targeted rate that would see
the average daily allowance
increase from 700 to 900 litres
Cost of food: ‘I love fresh veges but
• By Jean Edwards
CASH-STRAPPED shoppers
are giving up on buying fresh
fruit, vegetables and meat, while
parents struggle to afford healthy
food to fill kindergarten and
school lunchboxes.
Stats NZ figures released on
Monday showed food prices
jumped 12.1 percent in March –
compared to the same time last
year – the biggest annual increase
in more than 30 years.
Christchurch mother-of-two
Jenna Berry said the “ridiculous”
cost of fresh produce had forced
her to make meal-time sacrifices
so her children ate well.
“I’m a solo mum with two kids
and I struggle. I actually cut my
meal size down so they get decent
meals,” she said.
Berry said she made savings by
buying meat in bulk, shopping at
local fruit and vegetables stores
and eating home-grown produce,
but it was becoming increasingly
difficult to pack healthy lunches
for her children.
“My kids’ kindergarten, the
school, they’re really strict on
the food you can put in their
lunchboxes, but the food they
want us to put in is so expensive
you tend to go for your cheap,
crap foods, sugary stuff like that
because it is cheaper,” she said.
“They will literally turn around
that at kindy, it’s a home treat.
home starving because they’re
not allowed to eat that food at
The Stats NZ Food Price Index
shows grocery food prices shot
up 14 per cent year on year,
driven by prices for eggs, potato
chips and yoghurt six-packs.
Fruit and vegetable prices
soared by 22 per cent, driven by
tomatoes, potatoes and avocados.
Christchurch shopper Olivia
Bovey said grocery price hikes
meant she and her partner could
not afford to eat fresh fruit and
vegetables.
“We have to get frozen food,
or we just eat fatty food. I love
fresh veges, but I just can’t afford
them. They really need to put
prices down on veges, it’s crazy,”
she said.
“Sometimes I have to go to the
food bank because I can’t afford
to go to the supermarket.”
Bovey said she only ate meat
when she won $50 packs in
Thursday night pub raffles and
takeaways were sometimes
cheaper than cooking at
home.
Many argue supermarket
profiteering is driving food
price rises, while others point to
suppliers’ increased production
costs and bad weather ruining
crops.
Cyclone Gabrielle’s devastation
last year.
Dargaville
kūmara grower
Andre de Bruin spoke
to RNZ from the middle
of harvesting a paddock
with underground flooddamage.
“Somewhere between 20 to 25
per cent of our normal tonnage
will be coming off that particular
paddock. Each paddock we’re
going to varies, but we’ve had
nothing so far that’s any more
than about 30 per cent,” he said.
“This is not a normal harvest. I
would call this a salvage job.”
De Bruin said it was unclear
how much kūmara would handle
winter storage because some of
the crop could rot.
Kūmara would be thin on the
ground until next February,
he said.
I can’t afford them’
“The price going up is a
reflection that there is scarcity.
Although we have really tried to
produce as much as we can for
the consumer, what’s there really
is what’s there. We can’t manufacture
what we don’t have,” he
said.
United Fresh president Jerry
Prendergast said some vegetables
were getting cheaper, like cauliflower,
which had almost halved
in price to about $5 per head.
“I respect the fact that perhaps
even $5 is not suitable for some
people – some people will pay $5
for a cup of coffee, so it’s kind of
relevant,” he said.
“If you look at the value per
gram it’s reasonable. The days of
the $2 and $3 cauliflower have
gone, the $5 cauliflower is the
future.”
Prendergast said growers were
still battling high fuel and fertiliser
costs and labour shortages
and could not
avoid passing some of
that expense on to
consumers.
“Demand and
supply principles
apply with produce.
If demand is
there and the supply
is short, then the produce
price will increase,” he said.
“Will it turn people off in the
future? I just plead with the
consumers of New Zealand to
be really flexible – don’t buy it if
it’s too dear. There is still some
really good buying out there if
you’re prepared to be reasonably
flexible.”
Foodstuffs says
it has noticed
shoppers switching
to chilled and
frozen products
and research
showed about 44
per cent of customers
were hunting for cheaper
brands.
In its final report into the $22
billion grocery industry released
in March 2022, the Commerce
Commission estimated
Foodstuffs and Countdown were
making $430 million a day in
excess profits – a figure disputed
by the duopoly.
The Grocery Industry
Competition Bill currently
before the Parliament includes
a new code of conduct for
dealings with suppliers and a
requirement for the big chains
to wholesale products to rivals,
along with establishing a grocery
commissioner.
A PLAN to bring new life to the
inner city includes boosting the
number of residents who live
there, but nightlife venues say
that could also threaten them.
The number of those living
in the central city is aimed to
almost triple over the next five
years.
Entertainment venue owners
are worried they could be put
out of business if new residents
kick up a fuss about live music
gigs.
Darkroom owner Nick Vassar
is concerned about 18 new
townhouses being built across
from him.
“If you are building
townhouses or residential
complexes next to live music
venues, there are going to
be issues. It threatens our
livelihoods and threatens the
future of art and culture in the
city.
“It’s obviously a concern,
especially when one person
essentially can shut your business
down and that’s all it takes – one
person to complain enough,” he
said.
Vassar has reason to be
worried, because one venue,
down because of a local resident’s
Dux Central owner Richard
“It’s a real shame for us that we
can’t play the music as and when
we’d like to. It means a whole
segment of our market later in
the evening we can’t achieve
anymore, because we can’t have
music,” he said.
Sinke said all the venues in the
area were feeling concerned.
“We’re one of the bigger, wellknown
ones but there’s other
smaller venues, they’re having
apartments built right next to
them and on top of them, and
they pretty much solely rely on
live music as their trade – so for
them it’s devastating.”
At a recent city council meeting,
councillors unanimously
agreed on a number of initiatives
to help residents and entertainment
businesses co-exist downtown.
These included looking at
promoting the central city as
a “vibrant” environment, and
finding a way to advise potential
buyers they are moving into a
live-music area.
Any changes to noise or building
insulation standards would
be part of a plan-change process
and would take at least two
years.
The city council report said
both live music and residential
living were important for the
vibrancy of the city’s primary
commercial centre, and there
were “no quick fixes” to the conflicts
in mixed-use areas.
While venue owners supported
the initiatives, they said action
was needed sooner to protect
inner-city nightlife. Vassar said
for the venues on his street, the
situation was urgent.
“For us it will be too long, it
will be too late – townhouses
will be built next to our venues,
so we are hoping there will be
more immediate action.”
The city council aims to have
by 2028, a massive jump from
But venue owners said new
people could bring new issues
and conflicts, especially in what
had been traditionally a mixeduse
environment with residents
who knew what inner-city life
involved.
Resident Alison Stringer has
lived in the central city for about
40 years. She said both residents
and live music venues should
think carefully about what they
were buying into.
“It comes down to the fact
that if you’re buying into an area
Car fire
leaves man
• By Daniel Alvey
INQUIRIES ARE ongoing into
the cause of a car fire that left a
man with critical injuries.
Emergency services were called
to the house on Woodlands Rd,
Sheffield, on Saturday at 10.30am,
where they found the car in the
driveway engulfed by flames.
Said Sheffield Volunteer Fire
Brigade chief fire officer Neville
Croy: “When we arrived we saw
the chap on the ground with
burns. The car was totally involved
and it was just starting to
The man was transferred to the
Croy was unsure whether he
had been driving the car or attempting
to fight the fire. He said
the damage to the rental property
was minor.
“It might have been a different
Home detention for teen after
punch put man into a coma
• By Emily Moorhouse
A TEEN who “robbed” a man of
his life after a “coward punch”,
leaving the victim to learn to walk
and talk again, has avoided jail.
Regan Robson-Khan was
18 when he assaulted Wynton
King during a brawl outside the
Rockpool Bar in the central city
last October, leaving the other
man “fighting for his life” in an
induced coma.
Robson-Khan appeared at the
district court on Tuesday where
he was sentenced to nine months
of home detention for the attack
on King.
The court heard victim impact
statements from King’s mother
and sisters, read out by a support
person.
King’s sister Sierra recalled
the feeling of complete fear and
paralysis when looking at her little
brother’s scans as the medical
team broke the news that they
would turn off his life support.
They said the trauma the
29-year-old suffered was too
severe to live with and he would
never be the same person or be
able to walk or talk again.
Miraculously, her brother
began to recover, but will never
be fully independent as he once
was, she said.
She said there was a strong
possibility King would never
regain his ability to retain shortterm
information, meaning
he won’t be able to build new
relationships.
She would never accept
Robson-Khan’s actions that left
her 29-year-old brother incapacitated
were “just an accident”.
She asked the judge to please
consider what her brother had
lost when sentencing Robson-
Khan.
King’s mother Heather retold
the horror of receiving a call
from a police officer at 2am
shortly after her son was assaulted.
She was told King had been
assaulted and was in a coma. Her
heart sank and she began to cry,
trying to process what the officer
was saying.
When she arrived at the
hospital no one could tell her if
her son would live or die, and he
was in a coma for two weeks that
seemed to “last an eternity”.
King’s mother said the family
planned his funeral, which was
extremely traumatic for everyone
as his breathing tube was
removed by medical staff when
it was looking like he wouldn’t
recover.
She said King’s memory, processing
and conversational skills
were impacted by the assault and
he can no longer play rugby. He
also lost his job and his apprenticeship
and won’t be able to hold
a driver’s licence.
King’s other sister Amber said
while her little brother was alive,
“surviving isn’t living” and he’d
had to learn to walk and talk
again.
She said when King was in
hospital he would often forget
she had visited him and call her
immediately after she left as if he
hadn’t seen her.
She and her mother had to
resign from their jobs to care for
and support King, which created
a financial burden.
While Amber had sympathy
for Robson-Khan’s family, she
said it felt like wasted breath
speaking about the effects his
“coward punch” has had on King
as no one could imagine the devastating
impacts it has had.
On the night of the assault
Robson-Khan was at the Rockpool
Bar.
He was heavily intoxicated
after earlier polishing off a bottle
of Malibu Rum, the summary of
facts stated.
A Rockpool spokesperson confirmed
the teen and his friends
did not purchase any alcohol
while they were at the bar.
Around 12.15am, a fight broke
out outside the bar and spilled
across the street. As the brawl
grew in numbers, the offender
joined in and began to swing
punches at several people.
While security staff and bystanders
attempted to intervene,
a man receiving help from a
member of security copped six
punches to the head by Robson-
Khan.
The victim fell to the ground
in a foetal position, and the offender
was restrained by security.
But as the brawl subsided,
Robson-Khan remained angry
and agitated. Several people, including
King, who was unknown
to the offender, tried to calm him
down.
Soon after, he made a beeline
for King, who was focused on
something else at the time and
delivered a punch to the right
side of his face.
King was knocked unconscious
as he fell and hit his head
on the footpath.
Robson-Khan fled the scene
and continued to pick fights with
people in the area until police
could locate him, and he was
arrested.
When spoken to by police
about his first victim, Robson-
Khan claimed he was a trained
fighter and was “just swinging . .
. doing what he needed to do.”
He said he could not remember
assaulting King.
King was rushed to hospital in
critical condition and was placed
in an induced coma. Scans
showed a large subdermal brain
bleed and a fractured skull.
A Givealittle page was set up
by King’s family, which garnered
more than $33,000 in support of
his recovery.
Robson-Khan pleaded guilty
to a charge of wounding with
intent to injure and assaulting
with intent to injure in January
this year.
During sentencing, lawyer
Rupert Ward said his client had
never been in trouble before and
asked the judge to impose a sentence
of community detention.
Ward said it was important
to say how remorseful Robson-
Khan was, but “nothing can take
back from the injury that the
victim suffered . . . nothing can
make that better”.
Robson-Khan didn’t have the
slightest idea his actions would
have the consequences they had,
and it was “split-second decisionmaking”.
Judge Tony Couch declined
Ward’s request to let his client
keep his name secret due to his
youth.
Judge Couch said Robson-Khan
could have simply walked away
from the fighting which involved
people he didn’t know, but he
chose to engage in violence.
The judge gave the teen
discounts for his guilty pleas,
his youth and his remorse, arriving
at an end sentence of nine
months’ home detention with
standard post-detention conditions
for six months.
He imposed special conditions
such as not consuming alcohol
and taking part in courses that
would help change his lifestyle.
Museum plan delays bump up costs
• By Tony Simons
DELAYS IN dealing with the
city council mean the Lyttelton
Historical Museum Society will
need to fundraise at least another
$2.5 million for the port’s new
museum.
It was hoped the new museum,
Te Ūaka, might be completed and
open this year, but the volunteer
society had to make changes
after concerns were raised by
city council planners about the
height, scale and visual impact of
the building.
Society
president Peter
Rough said the
process, since
the consent
application was
first lodged in
July 2020, had
Peter Rough been “incredibly
frustrating”.
The society has received
approval for its plan for the museum
nearly three years after first
lodging a consent application.
The Te Ūaka project – to
replace the museum destroyed in
the February 22, 2011 earthquake
– was originally expected to cost
about $9.9 million.
The society has so far raised
$850,000, but the cost has now
increased by 26 per cent. Rough
said it might be significantly
more after additional costs incurred
by the re-design and new
consent application were factored
in.
He now expects it will be four
years before Te Ūaka opens.
Rough said it was frustrating,
because city council planners and
a professional design panel were
consulted at the very start of the
process and said they were happy
with the plans.
Plans were finalised in 2020
and were even discussed at a
pre-resource consent application
meeting with the city council,
with no major issues raised,
Rough said.
He said they did point out the
building was over height but a
senior planner wrote a memo
saying that issue was mitigated
by other factors, so the society
forged ahead.
“Council then consulted affected
parties but, just as we were
about to have a hearing, they told
us they’d made a mistake and it
needed to be publicly notified.
“We were then given the
choice: either continue with the
proposal without council support
and take the risk it might be challenged;
or take council concerns
on board and redo the plans and
submit a new application,” said
Rough.
“So, that’s what we did.”
The amended plans were
TAKE TWO: A visualisation of the re-designed Te Ūaka
building in Lyttelton. PHOTO: WARREN AND MAHONEY
finally approved by city councilappointed
commissioner Andrew
Hendersonlast week, who stated
the adverse effects of the new
proposal were less than minor.
The architects for Te Ūaka,
Warren and Mahoney, were appointed
to do the design work in
2017.
The following year the Lyttelton
Design Review Panel, coordinated
by senior city council
urban designer John Lonink,
made suggestions about design
elements and recommended incorporating
a mana whenua narrative,
but overall it commended
the plan.
The plan was then refined after
Ngāti Wheke, with local artist
Nathan Pohio (who is now vice
president of the society), were
consulted.
City council head of planning
and consents John Higgins said
some concerns were raised about
the original proposal in 2020,
but soon after Lonink left the
council.
Another staff member then
assessed it, which resulted in the
application being “limited notified”
to 22 affected parties. Nine
submissions were received, six of
which were opposed and three
were in favour, Higgins said.
“While council staff try to
provide consistent advice, that
can sometimes change when new
information is provided or new
professionals are introduced.”
The design changes include the
floor plan, reducing the overall
height by two metres and adding
more windows.
Woman in court over love triangle killing
• By Emily Moorhouse
A WOMAN CLAIMS the victim of a
murder was her friend, despite sharing his
whereabouts with his killers and telling
them to “get him” before he was stabbed
13 times.
The woman, who is in her 50s and has
name suppression, appeared in the High
Court at Christchurch for her role in the
death of Jared James Little.
Little was murdered on October
20, 2019, as the result of a fatal love
triangle involving his ex-girlfriend,
Sarah Elizabeth Barry, 28, and her new
boyfriend, Thomas Issiah Ellery, 25.
Barry was sentenced last year to
seven months home detention on a
charge of manslaughter, while Ellery was
jailed for life with a minimum period of
imprisonment of 11 years for murder.
Yesterday, the woman appeared for
sentencing. She was initially charged with
murder but this was later amended to
assault with intent to injure, to which she
admitted.
Crown prosecutor April Mills said it
was an “unusual situation” in terms of the
woman’s culpability.
She encouraged or assisted in the
stabbing of Little by giving his address
to Barry and Ellery before Ellery stabbed
him, Mills submitted.
Defence lawyer Nick Rout agreed it was
an unusual case and said his client had
thought of Little as a friend.
Rout said she “bitterly regrets” her
involvement but could not foresee the
“dreadful consequences” that followed.
He said the woman had been easily led
all of her life and had made a “foolish
decision”.
Ellery and Barry would have gone
through with their actions regardless of
his client’s assistance, Rout submitted.
He asked the judge to impose a sentence
of supervision, which would help to “keep
her on the good path she’s been following”.
Justice Melanie Harland said the woman
was clearly a party to the assault but
accepted she was not aware her actions
would end in Little’s death.
“I agree with the lawyers that the
circumstances of your offending are
unique, there are no similar cases to help
me decide what your sentence should be.”
Harland acknowledged the woman’s
cognitive difficulties and the steps she had
taken to address her behaviour.
She sentenced her to 12 months of
supervision, coupled with four months of
community detention.
The woman was granted permanent
name suppression on the grounds that
publication of her name would cause her
son extreme hardship.
Barry and Little had been in a two-year
relationship before separating in May
2019. Only months later, Barry and Ellery
became romantically involved.
In October 2019, Little attempted to
rekindle his relationship with Barry but
she “resisted his advances”.
Shortly after, a brick was thrown
through Barry’s bedroom window, and the
windows of Ellery’s van were smashed.
The pair believed Little was behind the
vandalism so went to his house, but he hid
so they left.
Days later, Barry received a Facebook
message from the woman telling her
where Little was staying.
She told Barry to “beat him” in return
for the damaged window and van.
On October 20, Barry messaged the
woman and asked if Little was still staying
at the address she had disclosed.
“Yes definitely,” the woman replied. “Go
and get him at his house.”
That evening, Barry and Ellery visited
the address and Little was ultimately
stabbed 13 times by Ellery.
Little died on the floor of his flatmate’s
bedroom.
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Amazing health miracles
from the silkworm
Serrapeptase an enzyme produced in
silkworms may become one of the most
widely used natural health solutions
for its ability to replace the majority of
anti-inflammatory drugs and bypass
operations. It is nature’s answer to pain,
chronic inflammation and clogged arteries.
Enzymes are essential for life. Constantly
working to build and regenerate the
body, they help digest food, break down
toxins and cleanse the blood, in addition
to thousands of other functions. A lack
of enzymes in the body leads to food
intolerances, allergies, digestive issues,
disease and poor health. Studies show an
average 70-year-old has only 20 percent of
the enzymes found in the body of a 20-yearold.
Serrapeptase is a natural antiinflammatory,
which can clean, clear and
reduce inflammation while dissolving nonliving
tissue including blood clots, cysts,
arterial plaque and mucus. One of its major
benefits is its ability to reduce pain.
The serrapeptase enzyme was first found
in the intestine of the silkworm in the late
1960s. The silkworm uses it to dissolve the
hard cocoon, allowing the moth to escape as
well as to digest the tough mulberry leaves it
feeds on. Serrapeptase can now be produced
commercially by fermentation of the
microorganism Serriata E15. It is prescribed
by doctors across Europe and Asia.
Over the last 40 years, clinical studies have
shown serrapeptase to have remarkable
benefits in a vast range of health conditions
amaZing health
Benefits from
the silkworm
Serrapeptase, an enzyme first discovered in the silkworm, could
become one of the most widely used natural health remedies due
to its ability to potentially replace the majority of anti-inflammatory
drugs & bypass operations.
Serrapeptase is a natural anti-inflammatory enzyme that according
to research can clean, clear & reduce inflammation while safely
dissolving non-living tissue such as blood clots, cysts, arterial
plaque & mucus. One of its major benefits is its ability to reduce
pain & clear clogged arteries.
SERRAPEPTASE SUPPORTS
• Inflammation relief, works on clearing the cause
• Pain relief
• Safely clearing the arteries of arterial plaque
that could lead to a heart attack or stroke
• Improving blood circulation
• Reducing high blood pressure
• Supporting cardiovascular health
including blocked arteries, cardiovascular,
arthritis, asthma, lung conditions, pain,
tumors, autoimmune disease and many
more. In Germany, Dr. Hans Nieper
clinically researched serrapeptase and
found it could clear blocked arteries and
prevent the need for bypass operations. U.K.
pharmacist Dennis Gore talked on BBC
radio about the dramatic results he has had
with serrapeptase. One case was a man in
his 60s who had been a heavy smoker and
was wheeled into his pharmacy. He was
breathless due to emphysema and COPD
and could hardly talk. He was on antibiotics,
and oxygen and getting bad infections.
Dennis prescribed him serrapeptase and
three weeks later the man walked into
his pharmacy, with no wheelchair and no
breathlessness and said to Dennis he was no
longer on antibiotics, nor oxygen cylinders
and was feeling great.
Serrapeptase has been shown to be
a very safe supplement and according
to researchers can be used with most
medications. However, let your doctor know
as medications may need to be reduced or
stopped as the need for them reduces.
HISTORIC: The clubhouse is being stored at Lyttelton Port until it can be
moved to its new site in Governors Bay.
100yo harbour
landmark on
the move again
• By Heidi Slade
A 100-YEAR-old yacht and
motor boat clubhouse now
has resource consent to
move to its new home.
The Canterbury Yacht
and Motor Boat clubhouse,
built in 1923, has been
stored on Lyttelton Port
Company land since it
was relocated from Te Ana
Marina.
The building is set to be
moved to its new site next
to the Governors Bay jetty
later this year as the port
company can no longer
store it.
The Governors Bay Jetty
Restoration Trust has been
involved in the project
sonce 2019. Trust secretary
Louisa Eades said it is
now waiting for an up-todate
quote to relocate the
clubhouse before it
can apply for more
funding. The project
already has $138,000 in
heritage grants and a
$58,000 contribution from
the city council.
“Costing from 2020
indicated a total project
cost of around
$400,000 – it
will be more
than that now,”
Eades said.
“Once we
have up-to-date
pricing, we will
apply for other
grants, such
as Rata and
Lotteries Commission, and
do some fundraising.”
The 12m by 6m
clubhouse was gifted to
the trust by the previous
owner under the premise it
would be relocated.
“Although it is a humble
building, it launched
many people’s sailing and
Louisa Eades
boating lives,” Eades said.
“A lot of heritage
buildings in Lyttelton were
lost after the earthquakes.
This one survived.”
Eades said the clubhouse
has a special history with
the yachting and sea
scout community.
The Lyttelton Sea
Scouts used the
building at Dampier
Bay until the mid-
1990s. Then it became
a training room for the
Dampier Bay Maritime
Club until the area was
developed into Te Ana
Marina and the clubhouse
was moved.
•The trust will hold two
community workshops on
Sunday and May 28 from
3-4pm at the Governors
Bay Community Centre,
where residents can
share ideas on how the
community could use the
building
‘Hold ‘em until he rots’
BEHIND BARS: Peter Joseph
murdered Louisa Damodran.
Child sex offender and
the killer of 6-year-old
Louisa Damordran in
1986, Peter Joseph
Holdem, has been
denied parole. Readers
react to the article in
last week’s Star
Should P J Holdem ever be
released? In my opinion, it’s
his surname, hold ‘em until
he rots.
It is beyond the most vile
act he is in for and should be
given a bullet quite frankly.
He is not human, he is
not worth the taxpayers’
money, hold ‘em forever and
ever until he goes to where he
belongs, hell.
– Jaynie Abbott
No, never release him as he
will re-offend.
I completely endorse retired
police inspector Mal Griebel’s
comments and feelings about
Holdem.
We can no longer entice
skilled health workers here as
other countries have more to
offer in lifestyle and wages.
Curiously, we still have
thousands of fully-trained,
experienced nurses and
doctors not allowed to
mandates. Why?
Until recently, we’ve always
had the choice to have a
SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
A centre of
creative excellence
When choosing the right school for
our tamariki we often go by the ‘feeling’
we have when we visit, as much as by the
programmes that schools have on offer.
The world demands fewer people who
can do repetitive tasks and more people
who can think creatively and critically.
That’s why our vision, our aspiration,
as a school is to be ‘A centre of creative
excellence’ in everything that we do,
whether visual arts or chemistry, volleyball
or music, management or curriculum
organisation. In doing this we haven’t
forgotten the importance of building strong
relationships with all of our students, and
the importance of individualising learning
pathways so that we come as close as we
can to meeting every individual student’s
needs. Hornby High
School’s feeling is one
of positive relationships
that support learning.
Students often
comment that we
feel like whānau, like
family. Visitors without
exception comment
on the calm learning
focussed environment
that they see and feel
when they visit our
learning spaces. This
all takes place within
our wonderful facilities
that are allowing us
to develop a new
curriculum crossing old subject boundaries
and catering for individual needs, that
support student passions, and help our
students to grow their heart for their
community. The growing list of student
achievements support our students’
opinions that we offer a wide range of
sporting and other activities for them
during their time at school. And we expect
nothing but the best from every student,
we expect every student to create the best
version of themselves that they can be. We
emphasise our values, promoting the ethos
of kindness, of manaaki. We invite you to
come along and meet with our skilled staff,
and the amazing young people who make
Hornby High School such a wonderful
place to be. Robin Sutton.
Preparing students
for their future
“Our aim is simple... to provide the best
education possible for every student”
Giving students
the opportunity
to study from an
innovative and broad
curriculum is critical
to providing each
student a pathway
that meets their
individual needs. We
allow for a greater
range and flexibility
in subject choice
including the utilization of the secondary/
tertiary interface. This reinforces the
philosophy underpinning personalised
learning and is strongly supported by
understanding our students’ interests,
passions, talents, and ultimately their
career aspirations.
We understand that for effective
learning to take place, it has to be
implemented in such a way that students
will be highly engaged. The school
does this in a ‘forward thinking’ way by
creating learning environments that allow
our students to see value in what they do
and achieve. Papanui “PRIDE” is what
we represent and we demonstrate this by
having young adults leave our school as
confident learners who have gained the
appropriate qualifications and social skills
to become valued contributing members
Thursday April 20 2023 The Star 19
of society.
All that we do here is reinforced by
positive relationships, an ethos of caring,
cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and
high expectations – what we call “Our
Full-Service Model”. The school highly
values the connectedness of curricular
and co-curricular learning. We have a
philosophical understanding that the
holistic development of the student is
critical to their individual success.
The school has worked hard to
consolidate recent initiatives to ensure
sustained and continuous improvement.
You are invited to view our website, school
charter, ERO report, and/or contact the
school for more information.
We look forward to welcoming all
prospective students and their families/
whānau to visit our school.
SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
Open Evening 2023
Burnside High School is pleased to invite
members of the community to our Open
Evening on Tuesday 16 May 2023.
We are well aware of the significance
parents place on the transition from
Primary or Intermediate to Secondary
School and how important it is to make the
right decision about this transition.
Burnside High School is a large
secondary school, a centre for academic
excellence, with an outstanding record of
academic, cultural and sporting success.
The size of the school ensures that there is
an exceptionally wide range of subjects and
extra-curricular opportunities available.
This provides flexibility for students to
follow a pathway suited to their ability,
interests and skills.
The unique structure of the school
retains all the benefits of a large school but
with students in Divisions of approximately
700. This ensures that students are known
on an individual basis and are supported
and mentored by senior students,
Form Teachers, Deans and Guidance
Counsellors. This strong pastoral and
guidance focus helps
Burnside High School
students strive to
excel and develop into
well rounded New
Zealanders.
Students achieve
well above the level
of similar schools
in the attainment of
NCEA certificates and
endorsements and
perform to the highest
level in a range of
local, regional and national academic,
cultural and sporting competitions. The
school is renowned for its Specialist Music
Programme, the only such programme in
the country.
The Open Evening offers Year 8 students
and their families a chance to view the
facilities and to experience some of the
opportunities Burnside High School is
proud to offer its students.
Students thrive at
Mairehau High School
At Mairehau High School, we really get
to know each student; students are seen,
respected and valued as individuals. The
safety and closeness of our small and
genuinely friendly and inclusive school
community enables each student to find
and develop their voice. Consistently, we
have small class sizes, and so learning is
able to be highly personalised, capitalising
on students’ strengths and ensuring
learning needs are recognised and
accommodated.
Leadership is viewed as a developing skill
set rather than merely a title, and as such
it is something all students are strongly
encouraged to grow, demonstrate and share.
Our range of leadership opportunities
- be they cultural, academic, pastoral,
sporting or one of many more – are open
to all students and produce confident and
successful young adults and citizens.
We know that when students are
happy and when they feel known and
connected, they will thrive. Our diverse
student body is caring and welcoming; it
recognises, celebrates and capitalises on
its cultural richness, of which our Māori
(including our Mau Rakau academy),
ESOL and Gifted-student programmes are
examples. Excellent support with NCEA
success sees students enjoy pathways to
university and a range of tertiary providers.
Through our links with tertiary study and
individualised career support, we offer
highly personalised and positive transitions
from our kura to our students’ next places
of learning or employment.
Set on a spacious, tree-bound and
easily accessible site on the North East
of Christchurch, Mairehau High School
offers an exceptional environment for all
learners. With most of the hard mahi done,
our comprehensive building programme
is near completion, and we invite you to
come to view our fabulous new spaces and
facilities.
this weekend
RUGBY (SATURDAY)
Burnside go into their clash
against Marist Albion after a
confidence-boosting 35-13 win
over last season’s semi-finalists
High School Old Boys.
It was Burnside’s first win in
almost two years after the team
was plagued by large defeats in
the last Metro Premier season.
Their last victory was over
Sydenham 20-18 in the 2021
semi-final.
High School Old Boys host
Linwood at Bob Deans (Hagley
Park) after their 22-17 home
defeat to Burnside.
Both teams scored in the last
quarter of the game but Burnside
held on as their strong defence
prevented High School Old Boys
from scoring in the last five
minutes.
Burnside head coach Willie
Brown said the win was
important for the players, the
club, the old boys and their
supporters.
“Some boys hadn’t won a game
since 2021,” he said.
“We had 10 players make their
debut in the game. So our biggest
focus has been working on our
connections not just within the
team but in the whole club.”
Now Burnside take on Marist
Albion at Edgar Macintosh Park.
Marist Albion will be confident
following their strong 35-13 win
over title-holders Sydenham.
Said Brown: “Now that we’ve
got the pressure of winning off
our backs we can just play some
good rugby.”
Sydenham take on Sumner
who go into round 2 on the back
of a last minute loss to Linwood
in the DCL Shield match.
Sumner head coach Gareth
D’Almeida said the loss was
tough but he was confident
Sumner can start their season
better than last year’s nine
straight losses.
“You shouldn’t really lose a
game in the last 10 minutes,”
he said. “But Linwood were
semi-finalists last year, so to go
down in the last play of the game
shows we’re a better team than
we were.”
Lincoln University and Shirley
also suffered tight losses in
round 1. Both will play on their
home grounds this weekend for
the first time this season.
Belfast travel to Lincoln to
take on the Rams after a 24-20
loss to Shirley. A strong Lincoln
University side went down to
New Brighton by a point (27-26)
in their opening game.
Christchurch take on Shirley
Christchurch had a tougher
game against Linwood, but still
came away with a 27-16 win.
High School Old Boys take
on Lincoln University following
their 111-0 thrashing of a young
Prebbleton side in the first
round.
Prebbleton host Linwood at
home and are hoping to get their
first points on the board.
FOOTBALL
Christchurch United are the
team to beat in the early stages of
the Southern League.
They face Nomads tomorrow
night following their 2-0 victory
over Selwyn United which put
them two points clear at the top
of the table.
Their battle with Selwyn
United game looked to be
heading towards a scoreless
draw until Christchurch
United’s Daniel Maclennan and
Abdulbaset Khalifa both scored
within two minutes of each
other.
Although Selwyn United did
not come away with any points,
the Foster Park-based side were
the first team this season to stop
Christchurch United scoring a
third.
Cashmere Technical drew
1-1 with Coastal Spirit in a
scrappy game at Linfield Park.
Technical came close to winning
in the dying minutes, but shots
from Andrew Storer and Lyle
Mattyson did not get past
Coastal goalkeeper Ellis Hare-
Read.
Cashmere Technical are
now two points behind leader
Christchurch United who have
a perfect 12 points from four
games.
Nomads are at the bottom of
the ladder after they were unable
to pick up their first win against
FC Twenty 11.
It will be a challenge for
Nomads tomorrow night against
Christchurch United. Nomads
went down 8-0 to the current
league leaders last season and
then narrowly lost to them again
1-0 three months later.
the National Netball League was
also named in the Saints team,
meaning the shooting end will
be a defensive nightmare when
both players are available. Former
Tactix captain Jess Maclennan
returns for Saints, although
the team will be without Anna
Gemma Etheridge.
Six of last season’s squad
return for Kia Toa’s A team who
finished sixth in the premier 1
in the shooting end and Corrina
•Technical A vs Kereru
A, St Margaret’s College,
5.35pm
Technical stalwart and former
Tactix defender Louise Thayer
will be a key player as she returns
to the A team this season. Charlotte
Elley, who is currently playing
for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty
Magic in the ANZ Premiership,
also returns. However, Technical
will be without young shooter
Jess Allan, who is a Southern
Steel training partner. Former
Tactix players Nicola Mackle and
Jess Prosser have also departed
Technical.
Although one of the only A
teams without any Tactix players,
Kereru have plenty of young
players to challenge Technical in
round 1. Liv Clark and Julianna
Wolfgramm return to Kereru’s
shooting end, as the team looks
to improve on last year’s fifthplace.

similar fate earlier this season.
“Both he and Sevu will have
to get on the rehab journey back
Bower was a crucial part of
the All Blacks squad last season,
making 11 test appearances, the
majority of them off the bench.
He is the third Crusaders All
