Kirsty’s killer likely
to be a stranger
• From page 1
But this week he told The Star
the information was one of the
leads being pursued by police
which came out of the reward
appeal.
“That is one of the 14 bits of
information that we are following
up on, but I can’t comment any
further,” Murton said.
He would not say why the person
had not been spoken to yet by
police. The two men who found
Kirsty’s body had also not been
spoken to as part of the inquiries
into the tip-off, he said.
“There’s nothing that has led
directly at this stage to take us
in any particular direction in
the inquiries, but there are some
points of interest that we are following
up on.”
The $100,000 reward expired
in January. It will be paid if it
leads to material information or
evidence to the identity and conviction
of the person or people
responsible for Kirsty’s murder.
In the original investigation,
Kirsty’s late father Sid, who died
in 2015, and brother John were
suspects.
When the reward was launched
in July, Murton said he believed
the killer was a stranger, and was
“pretty comfortable” that Sid and
He reiterated that this week.
“The offender profile is more
likely to be a stranger-type
abduction than a family member
but of course, we can’t rule out
anyone until we know who the
actual offender is,” he told The
Kirsty was last seen alive when
she left her Ashburton home to
walk her labrador cross, Abby, on
December 31, 1998.
Abby was found the next day
tied to a tree near the Ashburton
River along with a pair of Kirsty’s
underwear and boxer shorts.
