CHAPTER 21Obliviousness toBlessings orIngratitudeكُفْرَانُ‏ النِّعَم an-Ni’am] [KufrānAllāh states in the Qur’ān: “Whatever blessings you have arefrom Allāh.” [An-Na#l 16:53]OBLIVIOUSNESS TOBLESSINGSTo be bitterly hostile in disregarding this blessing can be an activeand obvious personal choice, a kind of barefaced ‘thumbing of thenose’ at Allāh’s grace. In a more passive manner, ignorance of Hisblessings can originate from a person’s lack of understanding andrealisation. Either way, this lack of acknowledgement constitutesingratitude.Allāh also says:o “And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If youare grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you areungrateful, surely My punishment is severe’” [Ibrāhīm 14:7]o “Remember Me; I will remember you. And thank Me, andnever be ungrateful” [Al-Baqarah 2:152]The Prophet said, “If happiness reaches him (the believer), he isgrateful (to Allāh).” [%a#ī# Muslim 2999:64]207
