Thursday June 1 2023 The Star • By Heidi Slade CITY councillors will vote next week whether to tear up a controversial central city cycleway. The cycleway, on Park Tce near the Armagh St bridge, caused an uproar when it was put in without Mayor Phil Mauger and city councillors knowledge. City councillor Sam MacDonald told The Star yesterday a notice of motion would be put to next week’s council meeting in a bid to take the cycle lane out and return Park Tce’s northbound side to two lanes. MacDonald said due process for the cycleway was not followed. “It needs to be pulled up,” he said. MacDonald, Mauger and city councillors James Gough, Kelly Barber, Victoria Henstock and Aaron Keown are behind the notice of motion. The motion looks to be another showdown between the right and left factions on the city council. The right, which includes Mauger and the city councillors involved in the notice of motion, have questioned the amount of money being spent on cycleways in Christchurch; while the left leaning Labour-aligned People’s Choice have been generally pro cycleway. Meanwhile, the city council has apologised to the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board for failing to tell the board a survey on the cycleway would be going live online. City council head of communications and engagement Katy McRae said Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Housing density: Council likely to press on • By Tony Simons THE CITY council says it will forge ahead with a multimillion dollar planning process enabling more housing density in Christchurch. This is despite news at the weekend National has withdrawn support for the bi-partisan legislation mandating intensification across the country. The consultation and hearings process around Plan Change 14 is budgeted to cost Christchurch ratepayers $2.8 million. Submissions closed recently and city council staff are now sorting and categorising them, ready for the next stage of the process. About 900 submission were received, of which 87 per cent came from individuals, with the rest from organisations. They are scheduled to be considered by an Independent Hearings Panel in October and November, after the general election. While National has said it will scrap the legislation if it becomes the government, city council head of planning and consents John Higgins rejected a suggestion the process can be stopped or paused. “Any pause of the hearings would mean council couldn’t meet statutory timeframes set by the Government in the City cycleway debacle set for a showdown CONTROVERSIAL: Councillors will vote on Wednesday whether the Park Tce cycleway will stay or go. If there is a law change, council would consider its options at the time,” he said. National has announced it intends to reverse its policy on mandatory medium density. Leader Christopher Luxon said the party got it wrong. It announced at the weekend it will give councils the choice of opting out and developing new subdivisions to meet housing demand instead. They have apologised and looked to rectify it.” Councillor and board member Victoria Henstock was aware the city council would seek feedback, but was surprised at the timing due to the pending notice of motion. “I was aware feedback would be sought but was unsure about what the format and platform it would be and when it would occur. I was surprised with the timing of the online survey, given the pending notice of motion,” she said. Councillor and community board member Jake McLellan said the survey did not come as a surprise. NEWS 3 In Brief Airport to buy electric fire engine Christchurch Airport has signed up to buy the world’s first Rosenbauer Electric Fire Truck to operate at an airport. Head of aviation operations Tim Morris said it’s another step towards Christchurch Airport having an entirely hybrid/electric fleet. “We are keen to accelerate the airport’s transition to clean energy trucks, and in the next few years, will replace all four trucks as new Rosenbauer models become available, until our whole fleet runs on green energy,” he said. Replacing the large diesel engine with a significantly smaller electric generator, a range of configuration, safety and operational improvements are possible. Information sought on theft from ATM Police revealed yesterday a large sum of money was stolen from a Linwood ATM just over two weeks ago. The theft from the Stanmore Rd ATM happened sometime between 4.30am and 6am on Sunday, May 14. Police said they were appealing for information and sightings of a light blue, four-door, 2009 to 2013 Toyota Corolla hatchback they believed could “assist in our inquiries”.
